Shore Leave: The Security Office

Mars brings out some digital maps of the island. Looking at the size of the island makes Alira realize that a ground search will not be easy.
"We definitely don't have enough personnel for an effective search. There are a number of security officers here on shore leave that we can involve. I'm hesitant to call in cadets for this but if we pair them with experienced officers and have them keep an eye on the cadets, it would make the search more effective. Unless we want to have this search take weeks, we need to focus our efforts on certain regions, however. The island is too large to search it in its entirety."
Jun 18, 2019 9:32 pm
Call in any off duty security and as many cadets as we need.
I think they would have to be in a building of some kind. It is just easier to shield it and to stay out of sight.

I think the best bets are buildings that are away from the normal flow of guests.

She looks at the map.

While we are waiting for extra people, let's investigate power stations, storage areas, garages, warehouses, and the like. Especially ones that are listed as decommissioned.
Jun 19, 2019 5:28 pm
Mars points out a number of buildings on the map. "There are a couple of structures on the island that have been taken out of commission but that still exist. If we're looking for possible hideouts, there are a few dozen warehouses on the island. If we're assuming that they are working on some bigger plan, we should possibly investigate the two decommissioned terraforming stations. They have been taken on the power grid and should be almost impossible to take back online without a full spacefleet engineering team and a lot of time but they might still contain sensitive equipment and data that could be stolen."
Jun 19, 2019 5:50 pm
Sounds like a plan.
Let's start with the terraforming stations and then move on to warehouses. With the warehouses, start with the most remote first. The staff we have on hand should be able to cover them, and as we get more staff and cadets coming in we can send them to other areas.

Alira stops and thinks.

Do you have any transporters? Getting to thos further out buildings would be quicker that way. If not, maybe we can coordinate something with the admiral's ship.

"We have transporters on CC1, they can beam us directly to where we need to go. Do you want to join the seach team yourself or supervise the mission from here or the station? And how about you, Mr. Borealis?", Mars asks. "If you have any special requests for members of the search teams, let me know. I will fill up the rest with suitable officers since I know my people better than you do."
Jun 19, 2019 6:37 pm
As you say, you know your people and the area. I think you would be best suited to coordinate things from here. I will keep in touch to see how things are going.

Alira sighs and runs her hand through her hair.

Lt. Mars, I want you to know that I am not trying to step on your toes. I know it can be frustrating to have someone show up at your job and take over. You have been doing a great job under crappy circumstances. It's just that these people were taken on my watch, and I feel responsible, so I am a little stressed.

Assign me someone you think will work well with someone bossy and transport away.
Jun 19, 2019 6:44 pm
Mars laughs at that. He's been completely professional but in his reaction, Alira can sense some tenseness being released. "I understand, Lieutenant. You were asking for this cadet earlier, Lisa Wilde, do you want her to join your search team?" He turns to Zephyr. "What about you?"
Jun 19, 2019 6:53 pm
Sure, if Lisa is game she is more than welcome to join me.
Jun 19, 2019 10:19 pm
I am at your disposal Lieutenant. Pair me up with who you see fit. My main goal here is to find those cadets and understand what is happening here. The terraforming stations fell like as good a place to start as any.

Zephyr looks contemplative for a moment.

That being said, I would prefer to join the search team if I had my druthers.

Moira has been taking care of requisitions and whatnot, helping the discussion move along and staying out of Tanner’s way. She’s relieved Alira has her act together. She’ll be a great addition to the Potential if Cass keeps her.

She’s not sure why the Darcy girls needed extra intel. But she really wants to get this right.

All right, Admiral. Where do yeh need me?
Jun 20, 2019 6:38 am
"Close the door, please", he says and after you do, he gestures for you to sit. He sits down as well and so do the Darcies. "I apologize for making you wait but I have sensitive information and I needed to make sure you can be trusted with it. Cassandra told me that you are trustworthy and I trust her judgment."
He smiles warmly at Moira, looking more like a friendly uncle than an admiral, before he explains: "It was no coincidence that I was close enough to quickly respond to your distress call. According to spacefleet intelligence, the Naplicans have been planning to send a strike team to this planet to steal the terraforming technology we used to create it. The information did not seem very reliable but I'm afraid it has been confirmed. The name that was mentioned, Endra Learse, is a weapon smuggler in the neutral zone. She has been selling weapons to the Naplicans and our intel suggested she would be part of this mission." He pauses before continuing. "We also have information that Naplicans may have infiltrated certain key positions on Caspera, which is why I couldn't speak about this openly. According to our information, security on this planet might be under Naplican control."

Moira wants to be alarmed by this, but somehow she’s not.

So. We get ta do a standard search an’ rescue on tha surface, but we’re really fightin’ on two fronts.

She shakes her head. Of course they took Alex. That’d be their luck.

So. Do we act like all is well, or do we hafta fake some sort ‘a failure ta draw them out? Any idea who they are?
Jun 20, 2019 3:21 pm
"We have reason to suspect Lt. Mars himself may be compromised but no proof as of now. Lt. Vitan will lead the search for the missing people and the kidnappers under my supervision. You will officially also be running the search but what I actually need you to do is, together with Cassandra, investigate security. If you need any other help, pull someone from your crew, someone you can trust, and only report to me personally." He scratches his beard as you ask your last question. "If you have a plan to draw them out, great, but submit it for my approval first. This is too important to allow for any margin of error"
Jun 20, 2019 4:07 pm
Sure could explain why the lad’s been so unhelpful. We’ll let yeh know anything we find out, Admiral. Ah’ll run generic search scans from mah datapad ta clog it up.

She looks to the Darcy s

Well, ladies, shall we?

Tanner beams up to his ship after telling Moira to "stay in contact".
Helena raises her hands in defeat. "I'm not trained for this kind of thing. Give me a job and I'll do it but you two should come up with a plan."
Cassandra nods at her sister, then turns to Moira: "If Mars is working with the kidnappers, his reaction if we tell him we caught them might be interesting. We would have to make it believable, though. Or we can try to look through the databases, see if we find any inconsistencies that might support the admiral's suspicions."
Jun 21, 2019 12:55 am
Let’s start with tha data scans. It’ll be better ta have our ducks in a row before we pull tha trigger. Is there a port we can use that won’t show up under Mars’s eyes?
Jun 21, 2019 5:30 am
"I'm sure we can find some excuse to access a computer in here and access a database. As for getting into files that Mars wouldn't want us to see and not getting caught, you and Helena know more about computers than I do. You two should handle that."
Jun 22, 2019 4:34 pm
Moira nods.

Well, Cassandra, do yeh mind interrogatin' tha prisoner? Keeps yeh off tha books. Comm me if yeh need....whichever tha other one is. Ah dunnae care if yeh pick "good cop" or "bad cop". She winks.

Helena, yeh've got tha highest clearance outta us anyway. This'll work. Let's go diggin'!
OOC:
Moira's gonna lead this hack so that if something goes wrong, it's hopefully at lower and lower layers. I don't know if you want me to roll for each layer or not.

1. Current Island information
2. Current Consortium intel on the Naplicans
3. Using key-words from that search, a scan of assigned Security files to determine "who's best suited to help". The idea here is to make it look like they're building a strike team, but really, it's an excuse to dig into Mars's file, as well as to find any stragglers Tanner might not know of yet.

I'm using prepared because they planned it, expert because it's hard to run an engineering wing if you can't work a database, and help because of Helena's security clearance.

Cassandra nods and leaves to find someone who can direct her to the prisoner.
Moira and Helena get to work on a terminal. They quickly find out some information:
1. The island is currently on lockdown. Guests are beind held in their accommodations and, by order of Admiral Tanner, are not being evacuated yet. There is information on all the attacks that have happened. If you want to know anything more specific about them than what Mars told you, ask me. What you do discover is that the attack on a bar that you were told about happened at Stone's. The one person who died there was Ensign Geoffrey Simmons. He got pushed to the ground and trampled. Stone is among the injured but only lightly and he'll be fine.
2. There are pages after pages of intel on Naplicans. You know all the basics. You don't find any information specifically about the infiltration/conspiracy or anything relating to Caspera-13 but if Tanner is trying to hide the fact that he knows about it from the conspirators, that's not too surprising. There have been some fleet movements along the neutral zone recently but if you want to interpret what they coul mean, you would need to roll for that. It's all highly technical in an area you're not an expert in. Again, if you have any specific questions I might be able to answer them for your roll.
3. You find a total of eight officers who have had previous encounters with Naplicans before. Nothing unusual. Patrolling along the neutral zone, attending diplomatic meetings with them as security staff. There is only one officer on the planet security staff list, a Lt. Drzenu Onac, who has been on board of a vessel during an open fight with Naplicans.
You discover that, in his function as security officer of the USS Spirit, Mars has attended a diplomatic meeting with some Naplican officials, only two months before he was reassigned here.
Jun 22, 2019 5:28 pm
With a deep breath, Moira turns to Helena.

Let's bring in this Lt. Onac. Keep it low-key. See what he may know. Ah dunnae have reason ta believe he's a rat right now. But ah need a smidge more before we contact Tanner an' pull tha trigger fer Mars.

She goes to the place Cassandra is interrogating their prisoner. A button lets her light a discrete bulb in the room, notifying Darcy that, when it's an opportune time, she wants to talk to her.

When Darcy does emerge, Moira shuts the door quickly so the man doesn't have a chance to see her.

So. Where're we at?
