Is there a way to search forums? So to not ask the same stuff over again. And also - is it possible to find and follow public games and be a spectator?

No to searching, that is an often requested feature so we know it is on the developers list.

You can follow public games. Finding them is hard so if you do, best bookmark them.

Thought I would use an existing thread to ask a new question - I have tried to share an image using the icon and pasting in a link in a game I GM - I have tried posting my images as a .png, both Google Drive and imgur, I am only seeing the link, the image itself does not display on my thread? What am I likely doing wrong?

my post ends up looking like this: https://imgur.com/3gjQcPB

Thanks

It's your link, I think. Try it like this:

https://i.imgur.com/MOSxRo4.png

When I copied the imgur link you posted, I got a corrupted result like you did, but when I add the "i." between :// and imgur, I get this:

https://i.imgur.com/3gjQcPB.png

The URL has to be to an image (end in '.jpg', '.png', etc.)

The best way to get this is to right-click on the image and choose "Copy Image Address" to get the correct URL. In this case, it would be https://i.imgur.com/3gjQcPB.png

Or what Naat said, yea. Basically right click on the image and "view image in new tab" and then copy/paste THAT link between [img] tags

Awesome! Thanks guys, it worked. I assumed the built in feature designed to copy the link on imgur would be the way to do it, the right click worked for me.

if its something you've uploaded to imgur if you click on the image there is the direct link that you can copy.

Having never used imgur before, I kind of assumed that the obvious Image Link/Copy functionality under View and Edit Post would work but it gives me this: https://imgur.com/3gjQcPB

If I right click and say "copy image address" it gives me this: https://i.imgur.com/3gjQcPB.png, which works.

Thanks

Super, Yea im pretty new to imgur also but i use it alot to post my maps on here. Glad its working for you.

You have to use the "Direct Link" not the "Image Link" next to your imgur image.

Thanks, I see that now - I think when I first uploaded the image, it took me to the New Post screen, there is an obvious "Copy" button that popped up when I hovered over the image. Going back later I see that there are many more options on the right side when just viewing my already uploaded images.

I made the same mistake the first couple times I used imgur.

At some point, I'll have to figure out why this happens and if I can fix it.

All right, I have another series of questions for you. What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a game public?

It seems that a Gamers Plane Gamer can't search for a public game, they would have to have the link, right? Is that the way people use it, to say "check out the game I am running (or in) at [link]!" I assume once a game has the max number of players, members will stop seeing it, but any member who has the link could check out the public game and then message to ask to override the normal player limit, but could not join automatically, right? I am running a GURPS game here and am considering making it public so people can view it, for example members of a GURPS Facebook Group, do they have to be members of Gamers Plane to see it? Are there any other ads/disads/reasons to go public? Am I missing something regarding searching for and viewing public games? Thanks.

A public game means that the forums are readable to anyone who has the link. I don't know if you can apply to a game when it's at or over its player limit.

Qralloq started a thread where GMs could post links to their public games. That's currently the only way to find public games, as the public game search functionality's been disabled for technical reasons.

The advantages, as I see, are providing a way for interested people to get familiar with your game, maybe for aspiring GMs to get ideas on how you run a game in a particular system, or players to see how a system works in practice before they join a game.

The disadvantages, well, anyone can see what you're posting. Some people don't like working/playing in a fishbowl. Especially if your game has the potential to contain anything that might be construed as offensive or unpleasant.

I'm sure there are more, but that's the way I see it off the top of my head.

Thanks 78RPMLife - maybe I will run it by my players, see if they are open to making it public. I am running a published adventure from the previous GURPS edition, so it might be of interest to some of the GURPS community as well - do you know if people who don't have an account here can still view the forum if they have the link?
Aug 9, 2019 8:43 pm
Those who do not have an account can still read along, I believe. They can read Spoilers, but cannot read Notes.
Aug 10, 2019 3:00 pm
I ran a game for a group of IRL friends. Some of our other friends did not have time to participate, but wanted to be able to read along, so I made it public for the duration. They did not need to make an account. They could access it as long as they had the link.

The disadvantage, I discovered much, much later, is that your permissions rules do not cover non-players. In other words, if you created a secret subforum for your GM notes (made secret by denying your players viewing access), guess what, the public can see all that!

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
