Chapter 4 - Sacred Stone Monastery

May 27, 2019 11:24 pm
The water genasi Shoalar Quanderil faithfully sails you down the river to the monastery (some of) you passed on the way to the Riverguard Keep. After you disembark, he sails on with Berci who had decided that adventuring is not his gig and is going to retire to his own village.

A trail leads into an ever-narrowing defile between bluffs of wind-sculpted sandstone. Eventually the walls draw in so closely that you can reach out and touch either side, but then the narrow space opens into a hidden canyon in the heart of the hills. A sprawling monastery with dark, narrow windows and red tile rooftops stands in the middle of this natural amphitheater, ringed by sandstone cliffs all around.

Ahead, a weathered flight of stone steps leads up to the closed monastery doors. The plain doors are made of heavy timber with iron studs. A dusty footpath circles the building.
May 28, 2019 4:08 pm
Sassy hops off the ship and looks up at the doors.

"Sooo, what are we looking for or trying to do?
OOC:
just wondering who is left and what classes do we have at this point.
May 29, 2019 6:14 am
Araaz looks at the monastery with curiosity. He wonders how it differs from his own monastery. "I believe this current situation mostly involves Xella, And Felicia. Although I might find more information regarding the sword I seek as well." he tries to see if there is anyone on the walls watching them or noticing their approach.
OOC:
so I forgot that in the river guard keep where we just were, Araaz was hoping to recover a sword stolen from his monastery, or at least information regarding its whereabouts. He didn’t find anything substantial, and is hoping to maybe find more info here at this monastery, since it seems that the keep and this monastery might be connected somehow?

Araaz sees no guard posts or watchpoints. There are no guards stationed at the door, either. Not that one would expect guards at a monastery.

GM Prompt: Did you want to enter?
Jun 1, 2019 11:43 pm
Sassy looking around and seeing everyone standing there decides to go up to the door and open it saying,"Hello anyone home?"
Jun 3, 2019 12:41 pm
Felicia takes in a small breath as they approach and Sassandra goes to open the door. You need to find a way to gain access to this band that's here, somehow. Think Felicia, think. How to pull this one off?

With a whisper to Xestras, he shimmers out of sight on her shoulder.
Jun 3, 2019 1:19 pm
The door doesn't open but a small panel in the monastery’s front door slides open, and someone wearing a golden mask peers out. The mask Is fashioned in the shape of a scowling gargoyle, but the hand that opened the panel seems human enough. From beneath the mask comes a female voice: "Yes? What do you want?"
Jun 3, 2019 1:57 pm
"I think we are all here for slightly different reasons but I am on a quest for knowledge being a bard. We are traveling together for safety. Being who i am it just makes sense don't you think." , Sassy replies
Jun 3, 2019 3:09 pm
"The abbess doesn’t allow visitors to disturb our meditations," comes her reply.
Jun 3, 2019 3:24 pm
"Oh come on we came all this way, how are we to learn enlightenment without studying. I mean I came all the way from the underdark to get here. Besides out boat trip was a one way affair."

Araaz gives a short, respectful, fisted martial bow and says, "Greetings fellow monk. I am Araaz Syl’a Var’ran, a monk from the Pale Forge monastery. A colleague of mine lives here, Juhlan Nahe, and we have been communicating for some time. May my party and I rest and recuperate for at least a short time while we recover from the past few days? We have just come from Riverguard Keep and had a slight ordeal while we were there. I also wish to say hello to my friend Juhlan and possibly present myself to your abbess out of respect."

(2) + 5 = 7

Jun 4, 2019 3:49 pm
The monks look at each other, and one sheepishly apologizes to Sassy for shoving her. They open the door and let you in.

This austere hall is finished in irregular blocks of dark basalt that form natural columns along the walls. The doors of the monastery’s front entrance face south, while Interior doors lead east and west. An interior courtyard lies just to the north of this room, visible through a pair of narrow windows.

They lead you into the courtyard. This long, narrow court is paved in red sandstone. To the north stands the main temple or shrine of the monastery, its copper-sheathed doors emblazoned with a triangular symbol. Doors also exit the court at its east and west ends, and several narrow windows pierce the south wall. Gargoyle statues guard the door, each facing the court with a ferocious leer.

They then leaf you into the temple. Four large columns of natural rock dominate this shrine. A wide set of steps descends into darkness in the center of the room, in front of a slab-like stone altar. Large, copper-sheathed doors stand in the middle of the south wall, and smaller doors exit to the east and west. Two narrow windows in the north wall admit thin fingers of light from outside. Above the altar, a triangular symbol has been chiseled into the heavy stone blocks of the wall.

Inside the temple are a priest and two more monks guarding him. The front door guards say, "These claim to be friends of monk Juhlan," and then step to the side.

The priest looks down at you with disdain, clearly waiting for you to speak.

Sassy has her arms folded across her chest still being a little miffed at being pushed, she gives her best Drow glare back (she has been told she was good at that when she started working with the Harpells) especially since friendly didn't work while see scans the area for anything she can pick or notice.

Araaz takes in the scenery and architecture as they are lead deeper into the monastery, appreciating the contrast and detail.

After the door guards introduce the party he takes a step forward and performs another fisted martial bow, this one conveying a little more respect towards one of a higher station in the monastery. "Greetings priest, I am Araaz Syl’a Var’ran, a monk from the Pale Forge monastery. Juhlan Nahe is a friend of mine. We have corresponded for some time now."
He gestures to the others in his party, "These are some fellows that I met across the river. They were being attacked and I lent them my aid. It was a close call for some of them, and I ask that we are granted permission to rest and recuperate for at least a short time as we try to recover from the ordeal."
He glances around and says, "Is monk Juhlan here at the moment? Would you let him know I’m here and wished to say hello? Also, If it is proper, I would like to present myself to your abbess out of respect."

The priest considers your words, and then obliquely asks, "First some questions. What is your greatest failing?"
Jun 5, 2019 11:40 am
Araaz considers for a few moments, searching inside himself, before answering, "I believe my greatest flaw is that I am too rigid in my thinking. Once I decide what I believe on a matter, I am inflexible to any other opinion. This can be for the better, but at times it seems that most often it’s at odds with the opinions of others."

Drow don't have failings. Oh what there is one I should have killed my mother when I had the chance, either that or my smart mouth , haven't decided yet."", Sassy says wondering how they will respond to that one.

My soul rests easy, even when others lay convicted of my actions, while a sliver of gold denied makes me weep. Felicia says, quirking her head to the side unsure why she is confessing herself this way.

Araaz cocks his head a little in curiosity as he catches the subtle movement of the priest and his anticipatory behavior, then moves between the group and the stairs, gesturing that the party hold for a minute. The unfolding scenario makes the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "Excuse me, good priest, but why do you want us to go down these stairs? This is clearly not a place for loitering or socializing. I mean no disrespect, but even in my own temple, guests were not asked to wait underground, in the middle of the temple while others are brought to meet them. We prefer to stay here, or perhaps outside while we wait." as he says this he is slowly moving away from the stairs and gently herding the group somewhat in the direction of the door.
Jun 10, 2019 8:00 pm
The priests eyes narrow dangerously. "It's downstairs or risk my wroth." The three remaind guards shift into a more attentive, combat ready stance.
Jun 11, 2019 3:38 am
"Come now. There is no reason for us to resort to such harsh words. These are difficult, trying times. We have only just met and wish to speak with you in friendship. Surely you don't expect us to be starting some kind of trouble?" The young forest gnome gives the priest a winning smile.
Jun 11, 2019 4:10 am
The priest is spitting mad, with a purplish hue overcoming his face. "Last chance. You go easy or hard. But one way or the other, you're going down."

The bow she so clung to so tightly, falls out of her now loose hand and clatters on the stone floor.
OOC:
Can you see this roll @Qralloq? I haven't tried this before - I also don't know if you want Death Saves public or private, Ive seen both sides from GMs

Rolls

Death Save - (1d20)

Jun 17, 2019 5:14 pm
OOC:
Public death checks are fine with me.

For the others, Yillia has one successful death check so far.
Jun 17, 2019 5:39 pm
As a bonus action, Araaz will cast a Healing Word at 1st lvl on Yillia.
[ +- ] Healing Word
OOC:
I want to attack the guard that is most damaged (I believe that is the one attacking Sassy). I’m guessing if I move over to it then I will take an attack of opportunity from at least 1 guard? Is this true? I want to try to remove at least 1 guard from the board and I think that Sassy’s guard is the closest to death, especially if I do a sword attack and an unarmed strike.
If He only takes 1 or less AoO, then Araaz will move to attack Sassy’s guard with a sword strike and unarmed strike. If the sword strike lands and kills the guard then the unarmed strike will be against the priest.
If he will take more than 1 AoO, then Araaz will simply make both attacks against the guard attacking Xella.

You can't use two Bonus Actions in the same round. Healing Word and unarmed extra attack. I'll ignore the unarmed attack.

Moving from the threatened area of the guard attaching Xella does provoke one melee AOO (not a full round of actions). Max damage! Except he missed so no damage.

Priest: damaged for 12
Guard 1 (on Xella): damaged for 10
Guard 2 (on Sassy): damaged for 27
Guard 3 (on Yillia): undamaged

Rolls

AOO on Araaz - (1d20+4, 1d10+2)

1d20+4 : (3) + 4 = 7

1d10+2 : (10) + 2 = 12

Xella attacks the nearest guard before backing away towards Yillia's position, holding up her shield to protect her against the 3rd guard.

Jun 29, 2019 10:23 pm
Araaz will chance the AoO from the guard he is engaged with and move to attack the priest. Shortsword Attack, plus ki point for 2 unarmed strikes.
OOC:
I don’t know why but my char sheet has really high attack and damage numbers!
+9 attack and +8 damage on a +1 shortsword and
+8 and +5 for attack and damage on unarmed strike.......

I don’t remember typing it that high. It should be:
+1 Sword attack = (prof + dex + 1)from the +1 shortsword = +6
Damage = (dex + 1) from +1 shortsword = +4
And
Unarmed attack = (prof + dex) = +5
Damage = (dex) = +3
right?

Viking1031 sent a note to Qralloq
Jun 30, 2019 3:34 pm
OOC:
@Viking1031: You need to make some saving throws. I can't see if you made the first Constitution saving throw (DC 13: 13 on fail, 6 on success) or the last one (DC 13: 13 on fail, 6 on success).

So the damage thrown at Sassy is between 22 and 35:
- first priest spell: 6 or 13 (saving throw pending)
- second priest spell: 1
- less Cutting Words: -4 (retroactively applied)
- third priest spell: 6 or 12 (saving throw pending)
- guard attack: 13

Not every story in the Forgotten Realms ends the way we would wish. Drizzt or Elminster aren't always there to step in and turn the tide. The Harpers don't always pass heroes secret information to turn the right ear at just the right time. No, the Forgotten Realms are harsh lands, full of as much disaster as adventure.

In the Dessarin Valley, five heroes entered the Sacred Stone Monastery, and never left. What tragedy befell them, the false monks of the Cult of Elemental Earth do not say. They have great plans for their greater masters, and nothing could be allowed to interfere with those deeds.

Will they succeed? Perhaps, perhaps not. But that would be a different story.
