Blinking the blindness away, Ilmadia grits her teeth at finding Belhifet too far to strike at once again. She darts into the middle of the chamber and waits for Belhifet to draw closer.

Ilmadia readies her action to move towards Belhifet if he moves into an adjacent zone.

"Consider yourselves fortunate. You alone shall witness this historic moment!"

Looming over Ras and Vincent, Belhifet raises his falchions high. Instead of bringing them down, however, he slams them together and chants out a spell. Concentrating on the energy that hums out from the two weapons, he thrusts forward with both blades and unleashes a powerful bolt of arcane lightning.

It passes across the room in the blink of an eye, ripping up tiles from the floor mosaic in its wake, blasting through first Vincent and then Alalla (Al takes 32 lightning damage, Vince takes 16). Then the lightning strikes Jerrod's Stone.

And all goes white.

Screams.

Blood.

Warmth.

The white light fades and the smoking remains of Easthaven appear around the companions. The sun's rays come down not as the gentle reminder of a new day, but as though through a glass window tinted red, painting the battlefield in a hellish light. A hot wind - utterly unknown by the inhabitants of Icewind Dale - blows into their faces. Bodies and black sludge are sprawled all about, signs that the defenders' lines are breaking.

Indeed, in the face of the misshapen horde of demons streaming out of the portal, order can only last for so long. A body hits the ground just before them, dropped from high in the air. Isherwood's shriveled face stares up from a twisted neck. Not far away, Natalie sits in the muck, cradling Jermsy's head in her lap. The boy is pale and seems to be shivering.

Just ahead, a score of orcs surround a pair of monstrous, orange apes - barlguras, like the ones faced with Yxonumei months ago. Small, ugly forms dart among the orcs' legs, clawing with poison-tipped nails. Just past this group, an even larger demon with a canine face holds Jhonen up high with a massive pincer around the man's waist.

All about is chaos and blood... and only more demons crawl out of the portal ahead. Its surface is like boiling black tar, about a hundred feet ahead.

Everard's eyes are wide and distant as he looks on his home. "By the gods..."

Round 1 Player Phase!

I'm not putting out stats this time. You guys just say what it is you want to do for this round. Make some attacks, cast some spells, help people, kill stuff, charge forward, clear a path, take charge of forces, ignore everything and just go go go... it's all up to you guys. Roll what you want, put in good descriptions, and we'll go from there.

Also, here's something new, to up the stakes. Once per round you can take an extra action at the cost of immediately afterward suffering 1 level of exhaustion.

Ilmadia cracks her knuckles with a grin. "Alright, kiddies," she says, ignoring Reothadh's obvious age and the ambiguity of some of the non-human party members. She pulls a feather from a belt pouch and taps Reothadh, Ug, and Alalla on the nose with it. The symbol on her forehead shines dimly for a moment. "A Fly spell. That should help us move quickly, yes?" She pales and her grin fades. "Well, dwarf? Giant up and let's get going."

Ilmadia casts Fly at 5th level.

"Stay strong, Everard. Tempus has not forsaken you." Al dips a finger into a small bottle at her waist and draws a symbol on Everard's back. It flashes and then disappears.

"Move out, team." She takes to the sky, ignoring the battle below as she heads for the temple. The horror here will be small if they don't succeed in their goal.

Al casts Protection from Evil on Everard, and chooses fiends.

Not sure if flying on a giant dwarf is the safest form of travel, the goblin thumbs through his spellbook, looking for a picture. The goblin flips the pages, passing the image of a feather, flipping back to that page. Tearing out a segment of the paper, Dok crumples it up and places it in his component pouch, giggles to himself and pulls out a large piece of thick amber sap. Chewing on the sap, the little weenog begins blowing a bubble, sending it in Everard’s direction.

Dok replaces pyrotechnics with feather fall as a prepared spell with Prodigious Inspiration. Dok casts Resilient Sphere on Everard, if he is unwilling he must make a DC 18 Dex save.

Feeling weightless once again for the third time this day, the dwarf reluctantly accepts his role as transportation. Focusing on the magic within his blood he grows rapidly until he is nearly 20 feet tall. Laying on his stomach he extends his arms to facilitate his allies as they climb aboard. He watches curiously as Everard is rolled up onto his back.

Reòthadh casts Enlarge and uses his Rage of Fallen Ostoria.

Once his allies are settled in, using his straps, hair, and anything else they can hold onto as supports, he takes to the air following Allala and Ug.

Fear stabs Zenithral at the sight of everything, but he takes courage. "Jhonen! Be strong!!" Zenithral runs onto Reodath and whips out his bow, purple, sparking energy streaming down his arm and into his bow. He flicks one arrow after another into place and fires at the creature grasping Jhonen. Each arrow explodes into planar energy as holy light gives the paladin some strength. (66 damage + Banishing Arrow, Jhonen regains 7 hit points and can use reaction to make an attack)

The three remaining priests of Tempus shout for joy at seeing Everard returned, and raise their hands in prayer to strengthen the group. Alalla, Ug, and Reòthadh each find a shimmering, protective force in place around them (Al, Ug, and Reo are each under the effect of a Shield of Faith spell, which increases their AC by 2).

Reòthadh takes to the air with most of the party clinging to his broad back, with Alalla and Ug flying on either side of him and Everard nestled securely within a sphere of abjuration magic.

Jermsy's body stops its shivering and goes still, and Natalie's wail is lost in the din of battle. Meanwhile, the orcs battling the two barlguras manage to kill one of the demons, but in moments their own numbers are reduced to a mere handful, and with only more foes closing in. A moment later, they are gone.

Zenithral's arrows streak through the air and each find their mark in the fearsome glabrezu trying to tear Jhonen in half. The demon vanishes and Jhonen drops heavily to the ground. He looks up at Zenithral and smiles in thanks, then gets to his feet just as a handful of screaming, bloated fiends reach him. A sweep of his radiant sword returns them to the Abyss, and then Jhonen is lost to view as the battle rages on.

The forces battling below do no miss the sight of a giant dwarf flying above them. A bellowing cheer rises from Keggruk as he lays into a diseased goat-like demon, the orcs around him quickly take up the shout. Among them, the party sees three smaller figures: two elves and an aged human woman. Erevain is a blur as he moves back and forth across the defensive line, here turning aside a demonic claw as it reaches for an ally, and there sword flashing to take the head from another foe. Every one of Arannis' arrows buried itself deeply into an eye, mouth, or other vulnerable target. Saki walks calmly among areas that are clear of enemies, retrieving spent arrows and sticking them into the ground near her husband. How did she even make it across the battlefield?

Upon seeing the flying companions, Erevain's eyes light up for a moment. He catches Alalla's eye, and his mouth turns to a thin line as he inspects the battlefield ahead, as if to judge how easily he might make his own way to the portal.

Even as cheers rise from the heroes' armies, a deafening drone fills the air as a handful of ogre-sized demonic insects fly towards the party (There are some saves to be made, details below).

There are 5 chasme in the air around the group, and each one has about 40 hp, AC 15.

Before you take your turn, everyone needs to make two DC 12 Constitution saves. If you fail either one, you fall unconscious for 10 minutes, or until you take damage, or until someone uses an action to splash you with holy water.

Shame and sorry pierces Zenithral as he hears Natalie's mourning cry for Jermsy. But with that type of shaking...he knew didn't have the type of magic that could have saved him. Soldiers die... Alalla's words echo. Jermsy was no soldier, but in this kind of war, everyone was.

Two arrows. One down. (42 lethal damage to one) His third skims by, twice as he curves it to hit another enemy.

Eyes become heavy, but the young goblin manages to yawn through the magical aura affecting him. Blinking, he grabs a handful of dust from his bag. Blowing cool air at the dust, a ray of frost begins to form in his hand. Some of the dust enters his nose however, and the goblin sneezes violently, launching the ray directly into one of the Chasme. Rather than a greeting of cold air, the fiend finds the ray has a corrosive affect.

Dok recklessly casts Ray of Frost, alchemically changing the damage type to acid. Dok uses his fury of the small dealing 27 acid damage.

Al turns away from Erevain. He will make it or he won't, and dwelling on it won't help anyone any. Still, she is almost grateful when the demons arrive, as it makes shoving her fear and worry for her husband back into its box easier.

Alalla cuts down the chasme as Dok's acid burns at it, then turns away to stab another. She wounds it deeply, but is forced to spin around to defend her back against another demon pressing in. As she turns, her muscle memory tells her that she has misjudged her hand, and the blow will miss, but the black sword handles better than any other she has used. The attack slices at the demon cleanly, and the blade's bare resistance and her momentum even allow her to sweep back around and finish off the other wounded chasme in the same blow.

"Oh, yes," she mutters with satisfaction, giving the blade an ornamental spin despite herself.

Chasme 2 takes 26 lethal damage. Chasme 3 takes 40 lethal damage. Attack 3 DOES hit die to a +2 attack bonus I keep forgetting to add. Chasme 4 takes 28 damage.

Ilmadia reaches up and seems to pull something from the sky. The symbol on her forehead glows and just then holy white flame engulfs the demon in front of Alalla. "That's more like it," the half-elf grins.

Ilmadia uses Sacred Flame. Chasme 4 takes 16 lethal radiant damage.

"Not Ug you foolish friend!" Ug yells as the priests try give him aid. He gestures frantically at Jermsy’s pale body. "Help other friends!" Jermsy was one of the first friends Ug had worked so hard to save, twice actually. A ferocity grows within Ug as he sees the helpless boy shudder in Natalies arms. Ug could do little himself, but hopefully the priests could do more. If the child dies, it wouldn’t matter how many monsters they slay or if they seal the portal, the world would still be lost if Jermsy dies, and Ug would have failed again. Ug lets out a barbaric howl to any bloodhunters that may still be alive. From portions of the battle field he hears them call back and make their way to him. Barely standing but somehow still fighting, Only Five of the original twelve remain (Mirek, a brother, a wolf, and two musicians. The take up formation around the two children, tired and bloody but ready to protect those they have sworn to.

Having done all he can, Ug launches into the air with the other hero’s, a furry fury growing in him once more. The fiends have little effect on him as his body takes on a more beastly form. (Ug passes both saves even with disadvantage!!)

The abyssal insects fly in, their wings buzzing violently. Each one extends a terrifyingly long proboscis lined with razor-sharp ridges. With arrows, sword, axe, and spells the demons are quickly demolished. One of the chasme staggers past Alalla and Ug to land upside down on Reothadh’s chest. As it greedily shoves its insectoid head forward to dig into the dwarf’s flesh, it fails so thoroughly that its proboscis is shoved back into its own brain. Apparently giant dwarf skin is tougher than it appears.

As the disgusting bodies fall onto the battle below, the group notices that Ug did not fare well in that exchange. The goliath has two gaping wounds in his chest where the chasme managed to stick him (I believe Ug has resistance to piercing from rage AND necrotic from his amulet. So after resistance, he takes 24 piercing and 48 necrotic damage. Unfortunately, his hit point maximum is also reduced by 48 points! It'll take something like a long rest or Greater Restoration to get his hp maximum fixed).

To make things worse, Ras, Vincent, and Halla all droop in their seats. If care is not taken, they may fall (Ras, Vince, and Halla are unconscious).

The party moves on as quickly as it can, and a few moments later are just above the massive portal, marked by churning black sludge that spawns forth demon after demon. Even as they watch, four large forms burst from the portal and take to the air – demonic vultures known as vrocks. With tar-slicked wings they rise toward the group, each one screeching with unearthly rage.
