As you drift through the darkness, clinging to the rope, you hear the claw-on-stone scurrying overhead. After what seems like hours, light flickers across the ceiling several yards ahead. Mathis uses this to guide and swims through the rocky beach and helps the others onto solid ground. It's night time and rain is still pouring down. Once you are all on the land, a flash of lightning lights up the sky and the figure of Antony floats, face down, along the river.
Mathis will lead the way to the rally point.

"Did we know that?", he asks, looking around at his colleagues in puzzlement. "All I know is that I was hired by FOC to assess Mr. Steele's mental condition. Since arriving on the job, not only have I come to the conclusion that Mr. Steele is quite lucid, I've seen things I can't possibly begin to explain myself. I'm not sure quite what we're caught up in here, but there seems to be some sort of war between FOC and those things we saw in the tunnels, and Cobb's Corner, Vermont seems to be the battlefield, and we're stuck in the middle of it all."
Doc looks up at the rain falling from the sky and grumbles.
"Now can we please get the hell out this rain? It's absolutely pissing."
The first farm you come across looks as if it has been crushed beneath the fist of some angry god. Nothing but debris litters the ground.
Some fifteen minutes later....

He then rejoins the other two boys in chanting as the girl continues to cut the cow.

When Mathis has a moment to think, he is reminded of the school teacher in Cobbs Corners and the pictures and rhyme she confiscated from her children.

As he gets closer, Taffy sees a yawning pit beneath the house, the voice comes from there, but in the rain and dark it's not easy to see what's there.
"Careful, Taffy! The children! There’s something wrong with them!"

It is not far further before you see the remnants of another farmhouse and Doc recognises it. It's a burned out husk now, but this is the home of Alexandra Cuzra.
Doc stops running to catch his breath. Doubled over and panting, he casts a glance over his shoulder. "And perhaps we should make sure the others are still following..."

You see the form of a man slumped over the flat altar-like stone.

"I hear the striga’s Sabbat outside my house. I hear many children and a man... I am thinking he is Sheriff Spencer. I crawl like dog through thickets. I see... I see...terrible things, many children dance and sing around hill. I see Mrs. Carmichael lying on the altar
stone, she is alive, and her little Susie...that child of the Devil...she holds her momma’s hand and she smiles at her. A man at the altar...his back is to me...he keeps cutting on Mrs. Carmichael but she just stared...stared at her daughter. She didn’t scream until the end. Until her own Susie stabbed her in the heart. Then from the trees…came...came a devil. It was a blasphemy on God’s world...and the little children...they ran to it like it was family. Dancing around it and singing.
Another was brought up to the altar and killed...and another devil come out of the woods. They do this for a long time. I black out and wake with rain stinging me.
Most children gone...most devils gone. I go back home, get hammer, then wait till all leave. I smash stones but striga children return...they strike me but I strike them too. This rain... I think... I think God sends this rain to wash away this evil. Like...Noah, yes?"
With one shaky hand he points to the sky and says, "I can see it coming", indicating to a mass of swirling black clouds.
Leaving the carnage at the standing stones, you retrace your steps through the undergrowth and past his farm.
There's one last farmhouse before you reach town, the MacClearan farmhouse, the place where the students holed up throughout the expeditions, the place that you escaped from as it was attacked by one of the walking trees. Only Freddie doesn't know the place.
As you arrive, you find the steel and oak walls of the headquarters torn asunder, the insides of the farmhouse gutted and tossed about. The portable generator is smashed and the radios completely destroyed.

He turns to Mathis. "What was this Bellweather like when she was alive? I mean physically? Barring utter immobility, I can't imagine a person, even an old woman, sitting calmly in place while being stabbed to death." The alienist shudders, trying not to conjecture what may have transpired here, each possibility even more terrible than the one before.

The boy staggers backwards, clutching his belly, blood appearing through his fingers, before falling down against the counter.
As Mathis peers at the square, lightning flashes and you recognise the man at the altar. It’s none other than Deputy Cutter!
Looking up, vague shapes begin to form in the clouds directly above, fang-lined maws. pus-rimmed eyes and black, ropy tentacles break through the clouds. The children begin to chant "Mother! Mother! Mother!"
The central work area has two large desks, several filing cabinets and a gun cabinet containing three 12-gauge shotguns (two double-barrelled and one pump action) and boxes of shells. There's also a small keg marked gunpowder and beside it a handful of two-inch wicks.
Milk begins to pour from the sky!
