A Time to Harvest - Chapter Five

Jun 9, 2019 8:38 pm
As each of you lands in the water some forty feet down, you find it's surprisingly warm and the current is not actually as strong as you first thought, pulling you gently through lightless caverns. The luminous fungus that lights the caverns above does not grow here and you are in almost complete darkness.

Thanks to Mathis' quick thinking and Freddy's skilled swimming, you all manage to get hold of the rope. Antony manages to grab Taffy as he goes under, and yanks him up to grab the rope, before getting swept away himself. Freddy pulls in Doc and Mathis helps Solomon and Eugene and Clive are strong swimmers and are able to stay safe.

As you drift through the darkness, clinging to the rope, you hear the claw-on-stone scurrying overhead. After what seems like hours, light flickers across the ceiling several yards ahead. Mathis uses this to guide and swims through the rocky beach and helps the others onto solid ground. It's night time and rain is still pouring down. Once you are all on the land, a flash of lightning lights up the sky and the figure of Antony floats, face down, along the river.

"God Damn that was the most swimming i have done in my life." Freddy says in between coughing up water on the rocky Beach. "I'm sorry for your man that stayed behind but now that we are out can someone explain to me just what the hell is going on?"
Jun 14, 2019 3:44 pm
Taffy sits shivering and runs his hands through his wet hair, his normal cheery and carefree demeanor replaced with exhaustion but intense resolve. "You saw those fucking bugs, right mate? That's what's going on. And it will continue 'going on' until we fucking end this. He absently eyes the barrels in his revolver as he answers Fred, spins the cylinder, and snaps it closed, like something out of a dime western.
Jun 14, 2019 4:52 pm
"Those are the mi-go. They are a fungal based alien race here in search of a rare metal. They have the capability to completely swap a person's brain out and turn them into a secret agent for them. And now they apparently have vast underground complexes. We will need to report this back to headquarters, that's more than this team can handle."

You remember the remainder of your team should be waiting not far from here, about half an hours walk in this rain.

Jun 18, 2019 7:23 am
Mathis leads the way to where the vehicles were left. The rain is still torrential, and visibility is poor, but at least there's no sign of the creatures. Soon enough you find the spot , the FOC truck is nowhere to be seen. The car has been completely crushed, almost flattened. Bodies are scattered about the area. Nekkler, the soldiers Jones and Schownauer, all lie dead in the mud. Bill hangs by on leg from a tree, his head torn off. Matherson and Professor Drake are nowhere to be seen, presumably escaped but there are no tracks, the ground has been churned up by something big.

With the truck gone, there are no working vehicles here. Your best bet would be to get to the farmhouse where there is shelter and radio equipment or even the FOC camp, though after the attack, there's likely little left of it. There are also a number of farms between here and the town, which might offer shelter from the storm. Failing that, getting to civilisation, the town of Cobb's Corners might yield help or transport out of here.
Jun 29, 2019 8:30 pm
"I say we head for the farm house"
Jun 29, 2019 8:38 pm
"Agreed, Mr. Steele. If we can radio for extraction, that would be ideal. I'm not dying to head back to Cobb's Corner, no matter how friendly the locals seem - though there was that one strange, foreign fellow. As eccentric as he was, he seemed to have some understanding of the things happening in town, in spite of the fact that he couched it all in rustic, folkloric foolishness."
Jun 29, 2019 8:49 pm
"Anything to get out of this rain. I've had enough of wet for awhile." After walking for a few minutes Solomon spoke up again. This time he spoke of their particular predicament. "You guys know that I have no idea of where we are or what you all have been through. I was knocked unconscious in the Quad at Miskatonic University in Massachusetts and woke up some time later in that place from which we just escaped."

Jul 9, 2019 3:15 pm
Doc raises his eyebrows at his comments.

"Did we know that?", he asks, looking around at his colleagues in puzzlement. "All I know is that I was hired by FOC to assess Mr. Steele's mental condition. Since arriving on the job, not only have I come to the conclusion that Mr. Steele is quite lucid, I've seen things I can't possibly begin to explain myself. I'm not sure quite what we're caught up in here, but there seems to be some sort of war between FOC and those things we saw in the tunnels, and Cobb's Corner, Vermont seems to be the battlefield, and we're stuck in the middle of it all."

Doc looks up at the rain falling from the sky and grumbles.

"Now can we please get the hell out this rain? It's absolutely pissing."

You trudge off across the muddy fields as you talk, barely hearing each other over the noise of the storm. Taffy pulls out his flashlight as everything is pitch black, save the occasional flash of lightning, but it doesn't work. Perhaps the dunk in the water damaged it.

Taffy and Mathis both hear a series of gunshots ring out over the storm. You can just about make out another farmhouse, up ahead, this one intact.
Jul 18, 2019 1:38 pm
Taffy jerks his head up toward the noise he heard in the distance. "This way, boyos," he says excitedly and he trudges off toward the distant farmhouse.
Jul 18, 2019 8:35 pm
As they move forward Solomon begins to make out the intact farmhouse. Looking forward to a drier, safer place to rest for a bit Solomon picks up his pace.
Jul 19, 2019 12:13 am
Following the sounds, you are lead to a strange scene. On the porch of an intact farmhouse stands a weary looking farmer. Beside him is a large boy of not more than twelve. The boy is cradling a shotgun as he takes a quick swallow from a jug. The farmer is clumsily reloading a smoking rifle and yelling obscenities into the night. Immediately in front of the farmer's house lie the bodies of four children of various age and gender. About fifty yards from the front porch, three kids dance and chant around a cow that has had its legs tied together and tipped over. A fourth child makes intricate cuts upon the cow's body while chanting under her breath.
Jul 19, 2019 6:35 pm
Taffy draws his service revolver and trains it on the old farmer. "Hold it right there, mate." He nods toward the ground, indicating that the man and child should drop their weapons. "Just what in the fuck is going on here?" he asks, never taking the barrel of his gun off the two.
Jul 19, 2019 8:51 pm
"You're worrying about the wrong group. Keep you eye in those sacreligous kids "
Jul 19, 2019 9:09 pm
Fredrick swings around and points his gun at the kids dancing around the cow. "This is messed up, what the hell are we doing here?"

Responding to Mathis, Taffy shouts, "All I know is I see dead children and a literal smoking gun. And, I'd feel a lot better if we minimized the number of armed personnel here until we figure out what's really going on." He continues to glare menacingly at the farmer and boy, though, considering Mathis's advice, he takes care to glance occasionally at the remaining children around the cow, just to ensure they remain where they are.

"It's you! Haha, we know about you. Our brother is coming. We did them in, we did them all in!"

He then rejoins the other two boys in chanting as the girl continues to cut the cow.
Aug 12, 2019 2:28 pm

Mathis heads towards bellweathers house.
Aug 22, 2019 2:47 pm
"Shouldn't we try and stop them?" Doc shouts after Mathis as he follows lamely in pursuit.
Aug 22, 2019 4:03 pm
Taffy nods to Mathis's order, at first hesitantly though gradually becoming more certain: whatever's going on out here makes him feel incredibly uneasy, and he'd prefer the company, he's decided, of the crazy farmer over these demonic children.
Aug 22, 2019 10:35 pm
As Mathis, Taffy and Doc take off, the children cackle and the cow lets out a horrible sound as it is cut. Freddie hears a noise like a tearing of vegetation from its roots, a loud cracking of a hundred branches snapping and as he turns he faces from the shadows and rain, a huge tree, impossibly moving. Solomon turns to follow his gaze only to be crushed under an enormous foot of roots, his screams echoing through the night.

"Is someone there? Please, help. my daddy's trapped in the root cellar."

As he gets closer, Taffy sees a yawning pit beneath the house, the voice comes from there, but in the rain and dark it's not easy to see what's there.
Sep 4, 2019 9:33 pm
Doc hears the girl’s voice, and immediately flashes back to the circle of kids cutting open the cow. Shaking it off, he doubles his efforts after Mathis.

"Careful, Taffy! The children! There’s something wrong with them!"

Taffy pulls out his flashlight and flicks the switch, but nothing happens. Tapping it a few times, nothing happens, its completely dead.

Following the trail, it leads to the northern edge of Cuzra's farm and walk over 200 yards, a trail leading through thick bushes, undergrowth and deep mud before reaching a clearing. At the centre of the clearing is a low mound on top of which are five standing stones in a circle, with a block of stone laid on its side in the center. The standing stones are very old and range from five to six feet in height. Some have strange symbols carved into them.

You see the form of a man slumped over the flat altar-like stone.
Oct 2, 2019 3:59 pm
OOC:
For the record - Doc (and also Santouche) has no idea who Bellweather is or what the significance is of getting to them quickly. If it's important, Mathis should still go, but Doc would want to see what happened to Cuzra.
"Christ..." Doc mutters, slowing down momentarily as he approaches the scene, before steeling himself and hobbling towards the slumped figure, feeling his jaw clench in anticipation of what he's going to discover...

As you get closer, you see Cuzra, apparently kneeling before the altar, his hands gripping the stone, his head lowered and bobbing slightly as if in prayer. A sixteen-pound sledgehammer lies next to him while a large kitchen knife is embedded in his back. You some three of the stones have in fact been broken into large chunks. The bodies of three children, their corpses bearing signs of massive blunt trauma, are scattered about. in addition, the bodies of twenty or so adults lie in a heap at the bottom of the hill.
Oct 2, 2019 4:31 pm
"Alexandru! What in the devil happened" Doc rushes to him and asses his condition, attempting to extricate the knife from his back and stabilize him.

Examining the wound, Doc realises it's too late, the man is on death's door and removing the knife would only hasten his end. Doc manages to rouse Cuzra enough for you to hear, in broken English, what fate befell him.

"I hear the striga’s Sabbat outside my house. I hear many children and a man... I am thinking he is Sheriff Spencer. I crawl like dog through thickets. I see... I see...terrible things, many children dance and sing around hill. I see Mrs. Carmichael lying on the altar
stone, she is alive, and her little Susie...that child of the Devil...she holds her momma’s hand and she smiles at her. A man at the altar...his back is to me...he keeps cutting on Mrs. Carmichael but she just stared...stared at her daughter. She didn’t scream until the end. Until her own Susie stabbed her in the heart. Then from the trees…came...came a devil. It was a blasphemy on God’s world...and the little children...they ran to it like it was family. Dancing around it and singing.
Another was brought up to the altar and killed...and another devil come out of the woods. They do this for a long time. I black out and wake with rain stinging me.
Most children gone...most devils gone. I go back home, get hammer, then wait till all leave. I smash stones but striga children return...they strike me but I strike them too. This rain... I think... I think God sends this rain to wash away this evil. Like...Noah, yes?"
Oct 2, 2019 4:49 pm
With his story told, his breathing becomes more laboured. "I beg you, leave before God unleash final wrath on Cobb's Corners."

With one shaky hand he points to the sky and says, "I can see it coming", indicating to a mass of swirling black clouds.
Oct 3, 2019 12:05 am
"Jesus Christ," Taffy mutters under his breath. Then, he follows Cuzra's gaze and finger up toward the swirling clouds, hand shielding his eyes from the rain as he observes this phenomenon.
OOC:
Do the swirling clouds appear particularly unnatural? Or just like a bad storm?
Oct 3, 2019 12:38 am
Like no storm Taffy has seen before, here or at home in the Valleys.
Oct 3, 2019 4:54 pm
"Jesus Christ!" Taffy says even more loudly, now having glimpsed the otherworldly weather phenomenon. "Doc, let's get out of here, quickly." He places a hand on the Doc's shoulder and attempts to steer him back the way they came.

Oct 6, 2019 11:18 am
Alexandru Cuzra breathes his last before Taffy and Mathis pull Doc away. There's nothing more you can do for the man.

Leaving the carnage at the standing stones, you retrace your steps through the undergrowth and past his farm.

There's one last farmhouse before you reach town, the MacClearan farmhouse, the place where the students holed up throughout the expeditions, the place that you escaped from as it was attacked by one of the walking trees. Only Freddie doesn't know the place.

As you arrive, you find the steel and oak walls of the headquarters torn asunder, the insides of the farmhouse gutted and tossed about. The portable generator is smashed and the radios completely destroyed.

Leaving the remains of the MacLearan farmhouse, the four of you return to the main road running into Cobb's Corners. In the distance, you see some sections of the town are on fire. Soon enough you arrive at the Bellweather house at the edge of town, a small cottage at the end of a cul-de-sac.

Approaching the house, you see that the front door is banging in the wind.
Oct 22, 2019 8:49 pm
Taffy raises his service revolver, cocking it up against in shoulder in a ready position, and swings the door wide. "Mrs. Bellweather?" he calls out through the opening.

It looks like she was decapitated with a damn butcher's knife... while those little demons danced around her,", he says, pointing to the small footprints in the blood on the floor. "The blood spill almost certainly indicates she was sitting here while she was under attack, rather than attacked and positioned here afterwards. Horrible..."

He turns to Mathis. "What was this Bellweather like when she was alive? I mean physically? Barring utter immobility, I can't imagine a person, even an old woman, sitting calmly in place while being stabbed to death." The alienist shudders, trying not to conjecture what may have transpired here, each possibility even more terrible than the one before.

The four men leave the house of Mrs Bellweather and head towards the town proper. Walking over the Cobb Bridge and onto Gismend Road, the rain begins to get lighter though the unusual clouds continue to boil overhead, almost developing some degree of churning solidity. Cobb's Corner is no longer the quiet rural town you once knew but now feels like a warzone. You see a number of buildings on fire and the streets are littered with corpses. Occaisionally you spot small groups of children running through the streets, each clutching various knives and sharp farm implements. From a nearby street comes a bellowing and hooting sound which is answered by further, distant hoots from across town.

Keeping out of site of the gangs as best you can, you reach the first notable building, Jim's Grill.

You approach the centre of town and see the main square and Civil War memorial and the source of the shouting is clear. On the raised platform stand two of the huge tree-like things and between them a man, standing at an altar, chanting with a knife held in the air and corpses strewn around. The trees are hooting at the sky as the black cloud boil overhead. Mathis leads the way through the rain, past the ruins of the newspaper and back round to the main square. You don't appear to have been noticed and reach the cannon. Although there are half a dozen cannon balls piled next to it as a display, there is no way to light it without fuse and gunpowder, which is not stored here. The dancing appears to be continuing and the dark clouds above are swirling ever more violently. As the man at the altar sacrifices another of the poor townsfolk, the blood-curdling cries of the children and hoots of the tree things echo around the square over the sound of the rain.

Looking up, vague shapes begin to form in the clouds directly above, fang-lined maws. pus-rimmed eyes and black, ropy tentacles break through the clouds. The children begin to chant "Mother! Mother! Mother!"

Oct 17, 2020 7:02 pm
As you arrive back at cannon, the children have become even more frenzied in their dancing, the hideous trees hooting away and the deputy have sacrificed more of the townsfolk on the altar. Suddenly something happens that you struggle to understand. two gigantic hooves thrust down from the sky, smashing into houses either side of the square, destroying them utterly and causing the ground to tremor. Static electricity makes your hair stand on end and the air feels thick and greasy. From the clouds appear huge udders and the children cry "Mother! Mother!"

Milk begins to pour from the sky!
