Hello to everyone

I randomly stumbled across this site on Reddit this afternoon and am very happy to have done so.

I have been playing and DM'ing RPGs for about 15 years which mainly encompassed D&D 3.5, 4e and 5e, D20 Modern, Pathfinder and Star Wars. I had a very brief (and very painful expedition into GURPS aswell).

I am currently DM'ing a D20 modern horror campaign, which I don't get to play very often, and sadly missing out on a D&D 5e campaign that those same friends are running, as I no longer live near them.

I have played and ran some PbP stuff before, in particular Star Wars and some Shadowrun. I am really looking forward, however, to being able to play some fantasy stuff on here and meeting all you guys in the forums.

I intend to try and jump straight into a game after I hit post on this puppy...

See you all in the games!

Welcome Kubby87. How did Shadowrun work for you on PBP? I've had mixed results myself.

Bowlofspinch...essentially our first GURPS game was a 17th century pirate theme, that a friend had always wanted to play and DM, he was loving the "realistic" feel where characters had limited hit points, weapons and damage pratically destroyed people in one hit...

So we set out in the Caribbean in what was a golden age of piracy era, as members of a crew of an up and coming pirate captain. My character, in order to gain some of the abilities that related to his backstory, had to take a negative trait to make up the points. I chose Kleptomania...i attempted to roleplay this as best I could (not having any experience of kleptomania myself), but restricted his urge to take things to small objects that would have no huge effect...or so I thought.

My character essentially ended up stealing something that turned out to be owned by a very angry shop owner who pulled a gun when I tried to run away...

Unsurprisingly, a 17th century black powder pistol, discharged point blank at someones back, does an incredible amount of damage...it was the middle of the second session.

Lars Smith, the bosuns mate, lasted 5 in-game hours. The DM had little sympathy or desire to fudge the roll...or the attitude of the shop keeper in general :P

Qralloq...it started out pretty simple when everyone was lvl 1 and there were only 3 players (myself being one of them). Rules were easily handled and it ran smoothly.

As 2 more people joined and characters levelled up and gained more feats/powers etc, I felt the rules started to get clunky and a lot of the posts were being slowed down, but that could have been down to my DM-ing more than the rules being finnicky.

In the end, we scrapped the rules and went for a pure roleplaying kind of story, where 'skill check' outcomes were essentially decided by the person posting and what they felt would be the coolest way to progress. And we managed to get some cool stuff on the forum pages that fit well into a shadowrun cyberpunk style theme.

I hear that. Half of the awesomeness of SR is the cool setting, half the crunch. Streamlining the crunch for PBP is a great idea.

Hello and welcome!

Yes, GURPS can be jarring, especially for people used to the heroic feel of many other RPGs...
