Eberron Magic vs other Campaign Settings

There is an ever flowing energy field that encapsulates the world of Eberron. Magic is a "by product" between the relationship between the 3 dragon celestial bodies, and the relationship of these 3 with the planes that constantly manifest around it in the form of moons.

But Magic is a limited resource, much like everything else, so when you cast a spell you use mana or a spell slot (latent magic), if you do not have mana then you can use certain dragonshard augments. There are no eternal wands in my flavor of Eberron. Every use of an enchanted item drains a "charge". Even a ring of protection (AC) or other similar magic item that can be used time and again needs to be activated to be used and when used reduces the integrity of the device.

Hmmm...anyway, certain types of Magewrights are needed to reconstitute the magic of an item. If an item is in poor condition, the amount of power it has is diminished. Worse yet, there is a chance of wild magic occurring if the item is damaged is still used.

Bound items, the solution to have a form of permanence on the enchantment of items. Bound items are unique since semi intelligent to intelligent beings are either forced or negotiated into inhabiting or sharing part of their existence onto an item. The effect is that the item can be more durable and have further number of uses or has theoretically infinite number of uses. The creation of bound items is a tightly controlled and often secretive process that is handled by various Dragon marked houses and other secretive groups.

Bound items can also be created when the wearer is forced into or willingly share his life force to extend the power or use of a magic item. An example of a personal bound item is the metal arm replacement

Latent magic vs Manifest/Active magic
Everything in Eberron holds an amount of "magic". Most simply do not use it in their everyday affairs. Spellcasting classes have learned to tap into this to transform and control the outcome.

Unlike FR, which has an abundance of magic, Eberron's magic is an inverted cone. Lower level magic is fairly common, while higher level magic is rare to non existent. The availability of magical services and items have been reduced because of the Last War.

To control abuse of magic, the use of potions, buffs, debuffs are limited. Too much of a good thing is bad, even with magic. Hence if a PC imbibes additional healing potions of similar potency, there is a chance of a wild magic effect occurring. The chance of wild magic increases whenever a stronger magical effect, is used over a less potent one. Spellcasters that cast multiple buff effects on a single character has the capability to minimize the occurrence of wild magic. Certain potions can also reduce the occurrence of wild magic.
