Out of Character

Jan 6, 2020 8:54 pm
Let me know if you have any questions about building characters. I know the Koszul is interested in mentorship regarding running Numenera, so I'll try and keep all the cards on the table about how this comes together.
Jan 6, 2020 9:12 pm
I’m touched by your solicitude.
Jan 7, 2020 10:40 am
submitted a character but it's not done yet, just setting it as a placeholder for now
Jan 7, 2020 1:45 pm
I've accepted characters Karam and Nim into the game, but I haven't reviewed them yet.
Jan 7, 2020 5:20 pm
This is my first ever post as a character.
Jan 7, 2020 6:56 pm
Well done. You've navigated the land mines!
Jan 7, 2020 9:32 pm
I've submitted my original character for your approval. Now all I have to do is remember how to play him.
Jan 7, 2020 11:30 pm
seems like we're gonna be a brainy bunch, im fairly new to it all so I dont mind switching to a glaive if we are in need of some muscle
Jan 8, 2020 1:35 am
It's not a combat heavy scenario; play what you want.
Jan 8, 2020 8:44 pm
Give me my cyphers, you mangy Game Master.
OOC:
My character has few social graces.
Jan 8, 2020 10:13 pm
My character already has some cyphers listed. We can change those if necessary.
Jan 9, 2020 10:13 am
Testing 1, 2, 3 :)
Jan 9, 2020 2:08 pm
Okay, I'll go over the characters tonight and assign cyphers as needed. KaeJae hasn't accepted the invite, so I'll bump the thread for one more player.
Jan 10, 2020 3:34 pm
Hello everyone, what are the taken focis?
Jan 10, 2020 3:51 pm
Mystical nano who wields power with precision
Clever nano who fuses flesh and steel
Learned Jack who entertains
Jan 10, 2020 5:28 pm
Submitted a character, might need some assistance completing the last details

Rohim Thalas, a Strong-Willed Jack who Rides the Lightning

I think i'll need a friend, anyone interested?

Pick one other PC. This character
has been your friend for a long time, and you
have learned to bring her along when you ride the
lightning. If the character is standing right next to
you, you can take her with you when you use the Bolt
Rider or Electrical Flight powers. (Normally, neither
ability allows you to transport other creatures.)
Jan 10, 2020 8:15 pm
I guess you can be my PC that knows my true nature if that works for you
Jan 10, 2020 10:44 pm
@Jay10 That works for me
Jan 11, 2020 12:29 am
KaeJae has joined us, too, making five. Ill review the four characters submitted so far tonight.
Jan 11, 2020 1:10 am
Character review, Nim

Few questions,

Do you recommend starting with trained speed def and armor training or specialized speed def without armor for starting?

If one of my starting weapon is a bow, do I start with 12 arrow with it?

If I activate shock and make an unarmed attack the next round, does the damages add up before subtracting armor?

Would the character require a tent and bedroll at start?

Thanks!

Character review, Aduan
- isn't this the same character you used in the last game?

Yes it is and it's also the same character that I ported over from Rondaks Portal where I played it in the Numenera play test
Jan 11, 2020 6:39 am
Raezhon is posted. I know we're not going combat oriented, but you need one glaive in every party, right?
Jan 11, 2020 11:39 am
Character review, Karam
Qralloq says:

KaeJae, your character looks good!
Qralloq sent a note to KaeJae

With that, we're ready to go. I'll post the opening shortly.
Jan 11, 2020 10:57 pm
Have all the PC connections been established?
Jan 11, 2020 11:16 pm
Almost none, as far as I know
Jan 11, 2020 11:33 pm
Jay and me were ready to exchange ours but I dont know any of the other connections needed. Do you prefer we try to mix with as many characters as possible?
Jan 11, 2020 11:47 pm
I really don't care, tbh. There are a few that have mechanical advantages, but they're otherwise fluff that too many players ignore. As long as you are committed to working together, I'm fine with it.

That being said, they do increase your RP opportunities so take advantage of it, but I won't hold up the game for it.
Jan 12, 2020 12:25 am
Raezhon would probably have latched onto someone in the group if they have knowledge of the past and or mysteries that might help her in her search. Alternately, someone might have found her in pretty rough shape somewhere and helped her get back on her feet. If so, she would have sworn a blood debt to repay their kindness.

Random Thought: The thumbnails are really small, would it be possible to post larger images of our characters in this thread so I can visualize them better? Numenera is so non-traditional 'tropey' that more visuals help me to get more immersed in the setting (can't just rely on 'oh, yeah, I know what a gnome looks like....' If you know what I mean.
Jan 12, 2020 12:47 am
I do like that idea, KaeJae. I'll start a party thread for such descriptive text.

Edit: TheVagrant beat me to it.

I do not know if speed defense trumps armor. Tough call, you'd have to theorycraft that.
Quote:

Yes
Quote:

Yes. +3 damage to a single unarmed attack, or +1 sustained for a while with the weapon charged up.

Other priorities have reached me, and I ask to be officially removed from this game team. I would very much like to keep watching it as an outsider, if that is possible.

It was a hard message to write and I feel like shit.
Feb 17, 2020 12:35 am
That's fine, I understand the time pressures. We can have your character in the background or stay with the boat.
Mar 22, 2020 12:59 am
Once you have eliminated the remaining margr, there will be a bit of narrating and the adventure will be over.

I've had one possibly two ask me about joining a Numenera game, so let me know if you want to continue going, either with these characters (who will get some xp) or new ones. If not, I'll set up a new game instead of continuing this one.
Mar 22, 2020 1:16 am
I like my character, so I'd definitely want to press on! :)
Mar 22, 2020 1:44 am
Over already? We hardly got started. I haven't even learned how to play the game completely. If you plan on keeping it going, I would like to stick with it so I can learn more.
Mar 22, 2020 1:58 am
Awesome! After this adventure, we'll bridge to the next one.
Mar 22, 2020 2:30 am
I'm not done with Rohim and I really enjoy the Numenera system, so count me in to continue.
Mar 22, 2020 2:39 am
Excellent!
Mar 22, 2020 10:19 am
Hello everyone! Happy to be on board, will submit my character asap
Mar 28, 2020 2:20 am
You'll notice that I renamed the game, to reflect a continuing adventure. I decided that I wanted to explore the Aeon Priest raccoon a bit more, so chose an adventure that features them.

Dark_Raider had joined us and let's assumed you have traveled together now for a few days and are mostly comfortable with each other.
Mar 28, 2020 2:37 am
Do we know anything about the descriptive or focus of Kaseeh?
Mar 28, 2020 3:14 am
They're an Imaginative Glaive who Fuses Flesh and Steel
Mar 28, 2020 3:36 am
I'm in for another
Mar 28, 2020 10:40 am
Posted some character art with the rest, I see Qralloq took care of cyphers etc, so I only need to pick his Glaive special abilities
May 9, 2020 3:46 pm
Hey my bad I haven't been keeping up folks, blame the quarantine craziness if anything, I'm very much enjoying this narrative so I'm taking today to catch myself up to speed and join the fray. Sorry about that.
May 9, 2020 3:46 pm
Thanks for checking in Jay10
May 17, 2020 9:43 pm
Now that Sanguinity is finished are you planning another chapter or are we completely done?
May 17, 2020 9:53 pm
I'm not certain. I am leaning toward shutting it down but haven't really decided yet. If I shut it down, I'd have space to try another Cypher game, maybe Predation (time travelers trapped in the Cretaceous).

I've played in a few Numenera games now, and run 5 or 6 so far. I love the idea of the setting but each time I find it hard to motivate the PCs to be attached to the world; same as a player. They generally end up being disaffected nomads with no meaningful goals. That's not what I really want.
May 17, 2020 10:03 pm
My character would really love the simple opportunity to scavenge for artefacts, but the stories closed before we could do any treasure hunting.

Maybe connecting the group with a community? Would serve as base for expedition, storybuilding for timeskips and the problem solving would be more impactful cause we would see (or avoid) the consequences.

Also, what happened with the metallic duck? :P

For a game that was intended to be more than a one-shot, I'd definitely have set up a community base with NPCs and meaningful PC backstories. Of course, there are always opportunities for chaining adventures together ("You find a clue!") but without personal stakes there isn't any reason to do so rather than just run something else.

I can tell you that this adventure was from a supplement called Weird Discoveries. As to artefact scavenging, there wasn't anything in the adventure to be found at the brood site.
May 17, 2020 10:39 pm
What would you like to see in your Numenera games and/or players then?
May 17, 2020 10:45 pm
Well, I'm not sure. Again, this game was intended to be a one-shot, running The Nightmare Switch. We extended it for another adventure based on enthusiasm.

If we want to continue for a more campaign level game, then for my end, we would need to backfill some setting details.

I'd want the lot of you to have a common community, set up some NPCs, and have goals beyond explore and discover.

For example, we could use this last adventure to make permanent homes in Rodia's village for you all, but we would definitely need to set up personal stakes for the PCs.
May 18, 2020 12:32 am
That is one of the things that I find with Numenera. Its so vast and filled with wonder and strangeness, and it always piques my intellectual curiosity because I have no idea what anything is or how it works, and that's fascinating and refreshing. But at the same time, its SO non-traditionally alien that I always feel like a stranger or a tourist, rather than a resident there. It's hard to feel connected, or even pretend to feel connected to a place that's so many things at once. I'm not sure how to explain it any better, but it seems even more alien to me than the strangest sci-fi or science-fantasy - which it kind of is.... It's weird, I'm fascinated by the setting, but even when I'm playing in it, I feel apart from it.

Q, I think you're right. If a group did an extensive world-building Session 0 and at least had a connection to, and an understanding of a place, it would at least provide a 'reality spike' that could be an anchor as they go off into the strange and unknown.
May 18, 2020 12:37 am
I think you've nailed it exactly, KaeJae.
May 18, 2020 5:21 am
Also, both the adventure we did offered no incentive toward success or failure and felt like events that any sane person would have avoided at all cost. So a bit of disconnect was necessary just to go along with the adventure :P

For Rohim, is electricity power mess up some part of his brain that transforms short term memories in long term one. So he does not remember anything specific before he encountered Nim (his current long-term memories are tied to his daily association with his friend) So he fitted the aimless wanderer bit perfectly. But that would make him very invested in any connection he did build.

He would have been satisfied to trvel and scavenge until he became more powerful before thinking about using his power for something specific, the path is the journey as they say. However, he would be very serious about protecting a community or interested in finding strange kid like he was and offering them a home or mentorship of some sort. Which you probably involve him eventually with powerful groups that try to take advantage of people with powers.
May 18, 2020 2:11 pm
Forgive me if this has been said because I have the bad habit of skim reading. On the case of character investment, if you forgive the chaos of the players lives and etc. I think one thing that might have helped with personal investment might have been finding a way to tie in our backstories a bit more. Perhaps some choice that would've driven a divide between the teams based on each characters personal ethics or goals. I know I was personally hoping to encounter remnants of the cult Nim was raised from or a chance to explore my history with Rohim. What might have also been interesting is to force each character to address whatever vice or negative quirk was associated. In the way Raezhon at some point opted to phase into the dome despite it being the norm to hide overt uses or examples of symbiosis of Numenera and nature like that.

Just from a storyteller perspective, the one off format does not lend itself well to heavy personal investment. Every story, however, has opportunities to purposely go off the rails to add depth and dynamics and etc. so if the "going off the rails" moment was motivated by character details we would have had little choice but to buy in a bit more.
May 18, 2020 2:11 pm
On that note as well, I'm in for another go around if Q is up for it and so on.
May 18, 2020 3:42 pm
I'll have to agree with KaeJae, adding that the world seems to offer itself for epic sagas, long term exploration/storytelling and existential questions. One shot adventures, while enjoyable, barely seem to get players in touch with the alien setting and run the risk of ending up with a party of detached murderhobos.

Had lots of fun playing this, but I'll probably pass another go as I found myself with lots of time during the lockdown and joined a bunch of games. With measures lifted and my life getting busier again, I'd rather drop off a few games than half ass a ton of them. Thanks to the group and GM for the ride!
May 18, 2020 5:15 pm
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Having jotted my thoughts down and listened to your own, I'm going to close it down.
May 18, 2020 5:36 pm
Well, thanks for the run!
May 18, 2020 6:39 pm
Just thought I'd add a final note. Prplbstrd ran a game a year ago that was time travel based and set in the Cretaceous or a similar time but it didn't last long. It was a GURPS based game that I wish had continued. I would love to join something similar if you go that direction.
May 18, 2020 7:15 pm
Thanks, Qralloq! It was fun to dip my toes in the weird world of Numenera. :)
