During the course of a longer than normal winter several mountain tribe raiding parties had descended from the upper reaches and were harassing the herds in their winter pastures. As retaliation the Stewart of house Bodaway was tasked with eliminating the threat. He lead a large force of soldiers around behind the raiding parting cutting them off from the pass they had come down through. With a larger force and better supplies he easily subdued the raiders and discovered that one of them was trained in shadow magic. After conscripting the others he brought the shadow mage back to the Bodaway Keep and tortured the secrets out of him. This allowed his family members a new station in House Bodaway as messengers with their ability to transport correspondences almost instantly between the summer pastures and the Keep. Using it in this limited fashion tends to keep the toll low on the life around its use.

While clearing land on the northern border for more pasture, the work crews came upon a cave that was inhabited by huge wolves, almost larger than a man. After several attempts to just move around the cave and being constantly harassed by the wolves the decision was made to exterminate the beasts. Traps were set and the majority of the pack was killed though several cubs were captured alive and somewhat domesticated. Enough to use them as hunting and war dogs. The kicker was, the cave the wolves had inhabited was filled with veins of precious metals.
