It's been three days since you slew the beast responsible for the river ferry deaths. In the interval, three more Guong nobles are assassinated -- two knifings, and one poisoning. Also, Fan Zexian is found drowned in one of the city's most luxuriant public baths. No evidence of foul play is found, but everyone knows better. Now that the proverbial dust has settled, and the precarious balance of power restored, Guong Bai, the youngest scion of that clan, now becomes Guong Ming's sole heir, and Fan Song replaces his late brother on the ruling council.

A message arrives from Yao Fei, the slug-man apothecary. Several days ago you gave him samples of the Yellow Zombie Mold you collected in the wild, and a vial of blue crystals found on one of the gang members that accosted Iko and Feng in the Lower East Quarter. He invites you to pay him a visit, as he is ready to share his findings with you.

A silk merchant shows up at Feng's textile shop. Wu Meng recognizes the man who, at the behest of the Quian, hired him and Rong Hua to steal the scroll from the Guong Estate. The man talks shop for a few minutes, pretends not to know Meng, then politely takes his leave. The unspoken message is obvious to Meng: "Report!"

What do you do?

Kalam is playing Ma Jong with a few elderly men outside. Strangers but he is taking the time to get to know them. A trail of wispy smoke comes from his thin clay pipe. He picks up a tile, Kalam still isn't good at it, but he's learning.
Mar 10, 2020 3:05 pm
Wu Meng had spent a quiet few days of respite in meditation. It was appreciated, given the hectic challenges of recent events. He had not forgotten his original commission, but the current political circumstances afforded no window for him to resume the task, what with the assassinations back and forth between the Guong and Fan clans. There was simply no opportunity for him to attempt another visit to the Guong house. This troubled him, and the appearance of the man was a timely reminder that the job was not yet done.

To those who knew Rong Hua, Xian Feng and Iko, and also in front of Kalam and Mimi, Meng quickly explained his predicament. "I shall have to pay him a visit. I shan't be long. But I do not foresee an uncomplicated outcome in this matter."
OOC:
3 ki for today. Question: I assume Meng knows where to look for the man and what his name is? Also, we never confirmed this, but does he also know who from the Quian hired him?

In addition to the Twelve Lanterns, the Quian has influence in many other enterprises, including several of the city's many archives. The man never mentioned the Quian, only that he represented the archive on Plum Orchard Lane in the Upper West Quarter, but Meng recognized the man's ring easily enough. A senior adviser or steward. He gave his name as Choa (though Meng doubts that is the man's real name), and said to find him at the archive.

The men Kalam plays mahjong with are old, hairless and stooped, but sharp as tacks. Bo is a retired ferryman, Hu used to be a musician, and Zhi used to be a street-sweeper. They haven't got much, so the wagers are small, but they're ready to take Kalam's coin if he doesn't play his tiles well.

Feng is but a block away, doing some "recon" as she puts it. This consists primarily of talking with the domestic ladies of the city, listening to their wild rumors and laughing along to their trivial stories. She considers heading back to the shop, but decides to stick around for a little longer.

Once Mimi recovers from her leg injury, she will let her friends know that she will be spending their downtime hunting in the nearby forests. If they accept this request she will go about to hunt for food and to sell for bits of cash. She will then return to the 12 lantern Inn at the end of the day to find her companions again.

Feng
There is a well nearby where the womenfolk gather to gossip as they draw water. The topic of the moment is the recent spate of noble killings. Not unusual in the Opal City, by any means -- hardly a week goes by without an assassination attempt in the corridors of power -- but the women are a-titter today because it's long been whispered that Lady Guong has been sleeping with a certain opium den owner, and one can't help but wonder whether the infidelity had something to do with her untimely demise.

"That's rubbish," scoffs Chen, a cleaning lady. "Wasn't her husband slain, too?"

"What do you think, Feng?" asks Xue, a washerwoman.
Mar 12, 2020 3:15 am
Feng plays it off for the most part, acting like such politics don't affect her. "Maybe her husband was also sleeping around, and the two killed each other. A crime of passion. I'm more interested in who's taking their place."
Mar 12, 2020 3:46 am
"You've all got soap suds for brains," cuts in Ling, another washerwoman. "Guong Ming is still alive. It was his cheating wife, and their two eldest sons that were killed. The youngest son, Guong Bai, is now sole heir!"

"Honestly, you can't even tell the slug-men and the slug-women apart," complains Siao, an apprentice seamstress. "How do they do it? I don't think they have any privates!"

...and so on, and on, goes the gossip.
Mar 12, 2020 10:34 am
"I'm sorry gentlemen but these knives are priceless to me. I could never part with them. I was just looking to pass the time with a friendly game. If coin is needed I'll seek it out and return when I have some. " Kalam says and bows to the gentlemen. He has a hard time repressing his old habits. Fortunately Sifu taught him some control and manners.

Having informed the others, and not wanting to bother them, Wu Meng made his methodical way to the Archive, noting how the districts he passed through were decidedly more pleasant and upper class. It crossed his mind to visit Rong Hua to see how she was doing, but he shelved that for later. She came to his mind as he had started this mission together with her, but it seemed that completing it with her was impossible now. He entered the archive and looked for Choa.

As you are taking your leave, Jinu, who works at a nearby brothel, shares something one of her regulars confided in her. Paranoia has infected a circle of occult summoners. A young neophyte, Jinu's guy, believes what the group has summoned is far more ancient and horrible than his superiors think.

Kalam (assuming you stay)
The mahjong guys speculate on the clan rivalries behind the recent killings.

Zhu believes Guong Bai eliminated his mother and older brothers to gain influence with his father. As sole heir, the hot-headed Bai can now pressure his father to wage full-scale cloak-and-dagger war against the Fan, something his mother and brothers must have cautioned against.

Hu disagrees. He's convinced Fan Song was behind the Guong killings, as well as the removal of his own brother, Zexian.

Bo wins three rounds in a row, and starts the final round of the match by winning the first hand. "Even though I'm wearing my lucky hat," grumbles Zhi.

Talk turns from politics to remedies for aches and pains. Hu swears by his wife's Ginseng Chicken Soup with Goji Berries, while Zhi says he relies on a decoction of various herbs and ground-up dried seahorse to improve his mood and keep his mind sharp. "So sharp, you haven't won a single hand today," scoffs Bo. "Take our friend Kalam here. He's an elf, I know, their physiology is different, but even among elves he's quite the physical specimen, don't you think? What's your secret, my boy? Any tips for us old codgers?"

Feng (the well)
"Oh, I don't know," Jinu whispers to Feng, as the other ladies are preoccupied with the discussion on slug-folk sexuality that Siao instigated. "He likes to tease me with scary stories of monsters and demons, but last time I saw him he seemed really scared himself. That was nearly a week ago. He hasn't come by since. Used to visit regularly, came all this way from some fancy library on Plum Orchard Lane. Just to see little ole me!"

Wu Meng (the archive on Plum Orchard Lane)
One eyestalk fixed on you, the other eyestalk on a voluminous visitor's log, the slug-man inks your name with flowing brush strokes. "Hour of the Dragon. Wu Meng. What is your business with Master Choa?"

Mimi (the woods)
The infected deer seems to have lost interest in you altogether, and is watching Orengi instead. It licks its lips, exposing its long, needle-like fangs. The animal is trembling. Perhaps this is a prelude to the deadly convulsions you know are just minutes away, based on what you saw happen to the giant toad after eating the infected cockroach. Then, you realize that the deer is wearing a collar.

As you noted, the reaction was slowest in the insect, fastest in the mammal. But this is where it gets interesting: the reaction is slowed by inhalation of opium smoke, and accelerated by the vapors of these blue crystals you gave me. Curious, isn't it?"

The clerk lets out what is probably the slug-folk equivalent of a harumph. It sounds very much like a very wet squelch. It reaches out and rings a bell. A runner appears so quickly and silently, it's almost as if the boy were magically summoned. "Take this man to the east garden. Then, inform Master Choa he has a visitor. Expected, I am told." The boy bows to the slug-man, and leads you through several corridors, past shelves of scrolls of both the bamboo and paper variety, to a small garden with a koi pond in the east corner. You are served tea, then left to your own devices. From this garden, you can partially see into two rooms to the north and west. The north room is full of scribes quietly going about their work. The west room is lined with scroll shelves but appears to be empty of people.

What do you do?

Feng isn't sure she's ever heard of a man attempt to spark some romance with talk of demons.

Not the best sign.

"You know, sometimes I find myself in that area. If you'd like I could deliver a message from the foxy lady who wishes to ensure he hasn't forgotten about her. Maybe you'd like to invite the man somewhere, hmm?"
Mar 16, 2020 9:38 am
Meng knew better than to intrude, and yet a place such as the archive held much interest for the monk, with its scrolls and wealth of knowledge. He wondered if there were, in its shelves, lore and history regarding the Eightfold Way. After all, the only study he had undertaken of these matters were in the halls of his own monastery, now gone. Perhaps he would be allowed to peruse some of this library, given permission. He got up and wandered slowly, staying within the garden, but yet observing both rooms to see if anything caught his eye.

Mar 18, 2020 12:28 am
"Incredibly curious." Iko notes, his monotonous voice not revealing how truly fascinated he was. "This raises the question as to why a group of common thugs had access to an accelerant. Do the crystals have any other applications? And is there some way to protect from the fungus that does not involve developing a crippling opium addiction?" he asks the slug-man.

"Oh, you've got a collar... Does that mean you belong to someone? I am afraid I can't help you much, other than to end it quick..." She says this mostly to herself. A branch heavy enough to quickly kill the deer would be hard to bring down with the weapons you have on hand. Perhaps a well-placed shot aimed at the deer itself would be better?

Also, a fanged deer is a strange choice for a pet.

Mimi carefully approaches the slain deer in case it might not be fully dead yet. Seeing as it is, she tries to retrieve the collar for later investigations. Questions swirled her head, but she knows the answers may come when she returns to her companions. Even the concept of using collars for wild beasts is strange to her, but she knows the customs of the city folk is best to learn and understand instead of being immediately disgusted.

Iko (Yao Fei's shop)

Yao Fei seems puzzled by your concerns about opium use. No doubt, the apothecary is well acquainted with its addictive properties, but like most people here in Opal City, considers it the most natural thing in the world.

"The blue crystals are a powerful stimulant. Just the sort of thing for a nightcrawling thief, or a gang foot soldier. But I have reason to believe the target is the latter: while the mold addles the brain, the blue drug temporarily renders that brain highly susceptible to suggestion. In other words, the combined effect produces an exceptionally strong, albeit short-lived, violent individual that will obey commands without regard for even their own safety. A killing machine."
Mar 22, 2020 2:55 pm
Feng (at the well)
"I'd like that," Jinu giggles. "His name is Mengyao."

Mimi (the woods)
Making sure Orengi stays a safe distance away from the infected corpse, you carefully remove the collar from the deer's neck. It's made of leather, with rings for attaching to a larger system of restraints, possibly a harness of some sort. There are unfamiliar symbols branded into the leather.

Do you follow the deer's tracks to possibly find out where it came from? Do you continue your boar hunt? Or do you return to the city at once to tell the others of your find?

Kalam (mahjong table in front of Feng's shop)
"Lots of recruiters are always down by the docks ," Bo muses. "Plenty of jobs for a strapping young lad like you."

"Be wary of gang recruiters," Zhi warns. "They're always looking to hire new muscle, especially now that I hear some some of gang trouble is brewing."

"You could come work for me," Hu says. "Chop firewood, tend the garden..."

"Don't fall for it, boy," the other two scoff. "Hey, cut it out. You know you can't pay him. Kalam needs coin, understand?"
Mar 23, 2020 7:42 pm
"Adorable. But I've delayed enough, it is time I must return to the shop. I'll be seeing you." If there is nothing left to be discussed, Feng will do just as she says.

Wu Meng (the archive on Plum Orchard Lane)

Changing vantage point, you discover the west room isn't as empty as you initially thought. There's a lone figure there, female, scanning the shelves against the south wall. You've never heard of a female scribe. What's more, this person is dressed in scarlet rather than the muted colors a scribe would wear. A minor aristocrat, perhaps?

The woman turns to face you - you had no idea she was even aware of your presence - and you realize everything has gone quiet - no rustling of leaves in the garden, nor trickling of water in the koi pond, no quiet shuffling in the north room - everything has fallen unnaturally still, frozen in time. In the woman's hand is an ornate scroll case.

There's a messenger at the door. Very official-looking. Very annoyed with this errand they obviously feel is beneath them.

When you answer, the person unceremoniously dumps a pouch in your hand. With a sniff as if they were handing off a fish that has gone off. The pouch contains 250 coins, the bounty on the scorpotaur.

The messenger spins on their heel and marches away.

Mimi slows to a stop as she finds the moss-covered hut. "Huh? The deer came from that? It looks very suspicious..."

She considers for a moment before drawing her bow at the hut. If whoever has infected the deer is inside the hut, then she will try to bring them out into the open. She hates close spaces after all.

She fires an arrow at the door. "Hey! Whoever is in there, come out slowly!" Mimi tries to put on a fierce voice.
OOC:
Do I have to roll for Volley, or Parley? Would it count as losing an arrow?

OOC:
Parley, I think. The unspoken threat is your leverage.

"You are wrong to mistake my diplomacy and decorum for cowardice. And you are quick to defend your clandestine actions by turning the accusation on me. Sometimes combats are won over tea than over sword, unless you wish to engage my services for the latter as well. You were unwise not to inform me that there were other interested parties. Our agreement was for the acquistion of the scroll, not the elimination of all other contenders.

Nonetheless, I consider my commitment still unfulfilled. I shall seek the Changgok to retrieve the scroll. Should you wish that I succeed, I suggest you supply me with the information I need, as much as you are prepared to reveal. I am a man of honour and my discretion is inviolable."

Mimi's fox companion also growls at the hut.

"Well, that's not very nice, shooting arrows at people's houses," says a toadstool practically at your feet. The toadstool turns out to be a very strange, wrinkled little person. "What do you want?

Wu Meng (the archive on Plum Orchard Lane)
Choa narrows his eyes at you, then makes another motion with his hand. If there are concealed guards or assassins, they have just been ordered to stand down.

"I may have underestimated you." The archivist steeples his fingers. "Tell me, what do you know of the Nine Unloved Demigods of Chaos?"

Using 1ki to take +1 forward on Spout Lore. Edit: ooh nice roll, Wu Meng knows plenty, I hope!
My studies have opened my mind to the machinations and arcana of the other worldly realms, I am not unfamiliar with the godly threat of chaos upon our world.

Mimi watches with curiosity at the mushroom person that comes out of the hut. "Oh, hi there. Sorry, I thought you might be an evil witch or something. I'm Mimi the Elf, and this here is Orengi my Fox friend. Who might you be? Also, I have been tracking a corrupted deer that seems to come from this hut. Would you happen to know anything about that?"

Mimi (the woods)

"Corrupted deer, you say? Who's been corrupting my deer?!" the mushroom person grumbles, "Shika! Where are you, girl?"
Apr 14, 2020 4:43 pm
Mimi tilts her head curiously and waits.
Apr 14, 2020 4:55 pm
"Shika!" The mushroom man calls again, and whistles. It seems Shika is the name of the deer he thinks is still alive.

What do you do?
Apr 15, 2020 4:14 am
Mimi thought for a moment to tell the mushroom fellow about the deer's fate, but figured that it would be best to tell a white lie first. "Your Shika... I found her dead. She seems to be struck by a large fallen branch. I'm sorry for your loss. Would you... happen to notice anything strange about your deer before she left?"

"Strange? Of course, she's strange! To the likes of you, at least. She's more than half fungus, just like me. Oh my poor Shika, now she's worm food. Speaking of which,..." the mushroom man pulls bulbous, rotting mushroom from his belongings. There are symbols carved on it similar to the ones on Shika's collar. The mushroom man gives the carved mushroom a tap, and peers carefully at the worms burrowing in and out of it. Satisfied, the man puts the smelly thing away. "You sure it was Shika? She had a collar."

Wu Meng (the archive on Plum Orchard Lane)

You know that the Nine Unloved Demigods are beings of pure chaos that forever seek to disrupt the balance of the world. Just as the Eightfold Way aspires to harmony among the elements, the Nine strive for dominance. Choa nods sagely when you tell him this.

"The scroll contains a sutra that I hope will... exert some measure of control over one of the Nine."

While pouring her own cup Feng spots Iko come in, being quiet and mysterious as he generally is. "Would you like a cup?" She asks the silent priest.
Apr 16, 2020 1:43 am
"Then this makes my dedication to the task more absolute. You have elevated the mission from larcerny to something for the greater good. Such a scroll ought to be in safe hands. I will redouble my efforts." Wu Meng spoke to offer the benefit of doubt to Choa's intentions, that the man's intentions were righteous in wanting to acquire the scroll to prevent it from being held by the wrong hands. The monk did not discount the possibility that he might use it for vile purposes, but that was something to figure out later, if Meng did manage to acquire the scroll.

The main business concluded, Wu Meng raised a different point. "Permit a tangential question. The woman in red. Would it be impolite to make her acquaintance? I am merely curious as to her presence."
Apr 16, 2020 5:28 am
The Elf Ranger tries to make sense of the situation. The fungus man does not look exactly malicious, but he is the culprit of the fungus parasite on the deer. This is reminds her of the humans in their treatment of nature...
Apr 16, 2020 5:39 am
"Do you know anything about this yellow mold that has been around lately? Was it made by you?" Mimi avoids the question. "I've seen it hurting the wildlife here, and I've been curious about its nature..." Mimi grows nervous.

somebox says:
While pouring her own cup Feng spots Iko come in, being quiet and mysterious as he generally is. "Would you like a cup?" She asks the silent priest.
"Yes." Iko accepts, sitting down next to Feng. "Thank you. I have just returned from the apothecary's shop with some news about the mold." He then proceeds to tell her about what he learned from Yao Fei.
Apr 20, 2020 4:28 pm
Feng listens to his findings as she procures another cup. "Lovely, I don't suppose this was all some crazy scheme to increase profit margins in the opium business? Later I can go into the city and check in with a few people, might give us a clue for this mystery. Oh before I forget Iko: how do you feel about...demons? "
Apr 20, 2020 4:37 pm
"I would not consider myself a friend to them, but I fear no creatures of the realm beyond ours." Iko tells her, calmly sipping his tea. "Why do you ask?"
Apr 21, 2020 11:35 am
Kalam quietly watches the exchange between Iko and Feng. Takes a sip of his tea before pulling out a pouch with Ikos portion of the reward. He puts it on the table and gently pushes it toward the man. "Your portion of the reward for the slaying of beast. Please, enlighten us with any knowledge that you may have of demons and oni. I find any knowledge of said creatures to be invaluable in their elimination. "
Apr 21, 2020 3:29 pm
Iko takes the time to count his coin, but his mind is more occupied with the training on supernatural entities that had been given to him by the Sorrowsworn.

OOC:
Go ahead and expound on the subject of demons and oni, Iko. You have free rein.
Apr 21, 2020 4:04 pm
OOC:
Ooo, fun!
Satisfied with his earnings, Iko slips the bag of coins into the interior of his robe. "The spirit realm is home to many entities. Some malevolent, other benign, and most with goals beyond our comprehension. Demons, and the Oni, are among those spirits with malevolent desires." He takes a sip of his tea before continuing. "Demons are a wide classification. To be clear, any spirit whose essence is twisted by negative emotion becomes a demon. There are those of anger, fear, woe, lust, even hunger. It is said that it was the mortal heart that created the first of the demons, who ravaged the spirit world before being confined by the Spirit Lords. Only after was the spirit world allowed to return to a state of peace and serenity, outside of the get prison pits constructed for the demons."
"The Oni are a bit different, in a way. The Oni are a certain type of demon, capable of reaching into the physical world for periods of time. They can manifest themselves in many ways, but not for longer than a few minutes. Often, they take this time to find a foothold of sorts. They are drawn to people who experience strong emotion similar to what has tainted their essence. Once they possess this person, they have a permanent foothold in the physical world to wreak havoc. The Oni are not just strong and tough, but cunning, and full of strange magic. Very dangerous, and to be slain with extreme prejudice. Oni are creatures of malice, hatred... conquest. They crave the feeling of domination over what they see to be lesser beings. To let an Oni survive for long is to bring destruction upon all it can lay its hands on."
Iko takes a deep breath, pushing away the dark thoughts of demons in a practiced motion. "So again... why do you ask?" he repeats, a bit more forcefully.
Apr 21, 2020 11:54 pm
Feng takes all this information in while sipping tea, looking calm and collected all the while. Internally she's a bit panicked.

"Oh one of the girls was talking about this 'librarian' she's interested in -spirits know why, must be good looking, or she can boss him around-. Evidently this fellow is quite knowledgeable of demons, and just a week ago he was positively terrified of something terrible happening, I didn't get the details. Now that isn't exactly a solid lead, but I figure if anyone would take such an interest it would be you." She sips from her tea again, only to realize her cup is empty.

"Now while you process this possible venture I have a follow up question, harmless really: ghosts are different then Oni right? At least subtly?"
Apr 21, 2020 11:59 pm
Iko does take in the venture idea, but doesn't miss the worry in Feng's voice as she asks. "Ghosts are the remnants of mortal souls. Not the same as a spirit. The possession of an Oni is complete. The soul is consumed as the demonic spirit takes possession of the body."
Apr 22, 2020 3:16 am
Kalam listens for a bit, "I'm sorry but my questions are of a more practical nature. How do you remove them from this world?" he asks then takes a sip of his tea.
Apr 22, 2020 2:45 pm
Iko thinks for a moment. "The key is usually to untether them from the physical world. Find whatever it is they have latched onto and either cleanse it or destroy it. This tether can be any number of things, from an object, a person, or sometimes, even a location, if they're exceptionally powerful."
Apr 22, 2020 9:16 pm
"Very interesting, I'll keep that in mind, next time." Kalam stares into his tea cup in thought. Then quickly drains the cup. "Thank you for all that Iko. You have given me much to think about." At that Kalam gets up and stretches a bit. "I need some supplies before our next outing. I'm fairly new in town, would either of you know of a reasonable place to shop? I'm looking for some rations and cave divers or climbers equipment. Maybe even a new leather vest?"
Apr 23, 2020 4:27 pm
Feng's worry dissipates, if only a little bit. I still need answers...

"I can give you a grand tour if you'd like. Supplies are plentiful here, and as for the vest..." Feng eyes him up, as if she's looking at him for the first time. "Well, I know of some exotic leather shops, depending on your taste. Fairly expensive." She answers ambiguously, failing to elaborate.
Apr 24, 2020 12:24 am
Kalam looks down at his own attire, the vest was made of old snake skin, some of the scales have fallen off and others have gone almost transparent. "You're right, I should save the coin. Ill get what supplies I can from here." he picks at a hole in the vest. "This ones a few decades old but it might last a few more years. It's just when we fought the scorpion beast, the bruises i took while trying to protect Mimi.. I was just looking for a bit of protection in case I am ever hit. I mean landing a blow on me is hard but not impossible." he grins wryly. "Also I would be grateful to have a guide."
Apr 24, 2020 4:51 am
"You're not that pretty." Feng rolls her eyes. "And you can probably find a..whats the term? A knuck- ah a 'knockoff'. Much cheaper, but the quality may be rather dubious. We can cross that stream when we get there."
Apr 25, 2020 5:28 am
Not quite getting Fengs meaning, Kalam looks around for supplies to purchase.
OOC:
I'm sorry, I was under the impression that this was an herbalist shop we were at. Also what supplies would be available?
