"Adorable. But I've delayed enough, it is time I must return to the shop. I'll be seeing you." If there is nothing left to be discussed, Feng will do just as she says.

What here is useful or valuable to me?
Who’s really in control here?
What here is not what it appears to be?
Wu Meng (the archive on Plum Orchard Lane)

Changing vantage point, you discover the west room isn't as empty as you initially thought. There's a lone figure there, female, scanning the shelves against the south wall. You've never heard of a female scribe. What's more, this person is dressed in scarlet rather than the muted colors a scribe would wear. A minor aristocrat, perhaps?

The woman turns to face you - you had no idea she was even aware of your presence - and you realize everything has gone quiet - no rustling of leaves in the garden, nor trickling of water in the koi pond, no quiet shuffling in the north room - everything has fallen unnaturally still, frozen in time. In the woman's hand is an ornate scroll case.

Kalam or Feng (Feng's textile shop)

There's a messenger at the door. Very official-looking. Very annoyed with this errand they obviously feel is beneath them.

When you answer, the person unceremoniously dumps a pouch in your hand. With a sniff as if they were handing off a fish that has gone off. The pouch contains 250 coins, the bounty on the scorpotaur.

The messenger spins on their heel and marches away.

Kalam excuses himself from the game initially. Before answering the messenger, he bows to the three old men. He accepts the pouch at first, not knowing, or checking, its contents. If the messenger explains what was given Kalam would graciously accept. After the messenger leaves, he would take the pouch inside the shop, to find Feng to divide up the reward.

Mimi sees the tracks of the deer, and ponders for a moment before calling over Orengi. "Let's take a look at where you've been..." She quickly follows the tracks.

"Pardon me, I did not mean to intrude." Wu Meng bowed. "I did not realise there was someone else browsing the shelves. I am Wu Meng. Perhaps I can be of assistance." The scroll case the woman held caught his attention.
OOC:
If I want to know more about it, is it a Spout Lore, Discern Realities, or something else?

I'm just gonna add 50 of those to my character sheet real quick...
Feng returns to the shop just in time to see Kalem with a very interesting pouch. She wastes no time in helping count the money, feeling rather pleased with today's events. "Tell me Kalam, what is your relationship with Wu Meng? Do you share much of his...philosophy?"

Iko (Yao Fei's shop)
The slug-man apothecary offers you an herbal tonic while he shares his findings.
Iko nods at the findings. He looks more closely at the tonic. "Is this a... cure? Something to kill the mold before it takes over?"
Mar 28, 2020 5:56 pm
Iko (Yao Fei's shop)

"A cure? No. But it nourishes the blood, warms the qi. So what do you think of all this?"

Wu Meng (the archive on Plum Orchard Lane)

A man clears his throat behind you. When you turn around, you see Choa. He's not wearing the Quian ring. In fact, today he's not dressed like someone who works for anyone. He has the appearance of being the master of this place.

"I expected you and your associate much sooner, monk."

Turning once more, you see that the mysterious, scarlet-garbed woman has disappeared!

What do you do?

"You have me at a disadvantage. I seem to be working for a client whose identity I was not certain of." Wu Meng bowed again. "My humble apologies for the failure. It seems I should not have offered to have undertaken a task which required dishonest means to accomplish, at least not without knowing the true implications of why I ought to do so.

My female partner is now incapacitated, and unable to fulfil the task as well. I will still do my best to fulfil my word, but perhaps today is an opportunity to clarify what greater good I might achieve with this theft, before I set out again to retrieve that which you seek."
Mar 29, 2020 6:51 pm
"Scruples. Rare in Opal City, and certainly not in evidence when you accepted the commission," Choa dismisses you with a wave. "If you feel unequal to the task, away with you. You will not be punished for this failure, but neither will you be paid."

Choa turns to leave. What do you do?
Mar 30, 2020 1:03 pm
"A moment. The commision was an arrangement made by my more free spirited partner. My honour requires that I complete the task. To make up for the delay, and in lieu of payment, may I press the point about the reason for acquiring the scroll. And my manners have been tardy, for I have not yet inquired the name of yourself, my august employer."

Iko stands in introspective silence for a moment. "It is worrisome, to say the least." he admits. "I think I should return to my companions... and perhaps pray on this. There might be some answers I might find for questions we have not yet thought to ask."
The cleric bows respectfully to the slug man, and, taking the tonic with him, returns to the inn they have been staying at to inform everyone of the results of Yao Fei's research.

Kalam follows suit. Putting his fifty into a coin pouch tied to his belt and placed inside his vest.
"My Sifu asked me to come find him. We are both students of a Martial art heritage. He is of the Mountain, under Sifu Gen. I am of the Sky, under Sifu Qian. He is in fact, the last Mountain. I'm not sure how much you know of these traditions, but the meaning is significant." he gives a pained look. "I had the honor of sparing with him in the past, his martial prowess is not to be taken lightly. The only reason I won is because of my bloodline. The ability to harness a small amount of magical energy, gives me an edge in combat. "

Feng holds a kettle in her hand. A small amount of steam begins to pour out from it. "Really? Now I wonder if I could best him myself." Feng responds in jest, chuckling at the thought. "Maybe we'll never know, I always get carried away during a fight anyways. " Feng places the kettle down, and grabs some cups. "Truthfully I find all his talk of 'Serenity now' a bit too idealistic for my taste, but I still have a debt to repay and our preferences haven't given me cause to abandon it. Tea?"

Iko, Feng, and Kalam (Feng's textile shop)
Iko arrives as Feng and Kalam discussing philosophy over a pot of tea.

Mimi (the woods)
The deer's tracks lead you to a small hut well-camouflaged with bark and molds and moss. A thin wisp of smoke snakes out of the chimney. What do you do?

Choa stops and throws up a hand signal that looks suspiciously like one meant to stay an assassin's blade, or at least, command them to wait. "You have my name. Are you suggesting I was being false?"

In the corner of your vision, a blur of scarlet. When you look, the woman is not there.

"As for our reasons, you are in no position to demand them. Your free-spirited partner should have taught you better. I am told the Changgok now have possession of the scroll thanks to a certain... free-spirited individual you were seen sharing a pot of tea with. Some might infer you colluded with said individual, but I can tell you haven't the liver to double-cross me. Am I wrong?"
Apr 8, 2020 4:36 am
Mimi slows to a stop as she finds the moss-covered hut. "Huh? The deer came from that? It looks very suspicious..."

She considers for a moment before drawing her bow at the hut. If whoever has infected the deer is inside the hut, then she will try to bring them out into the open. She hates close spaces after all.

She fires an arrow at the door. "Hey! Whoever is in there, come out slowly!" Mimi tries to put on a fierce voice.
OOC:
Do I have to roll for Volley, or Parley? Would it count as losing an arrow?
Apr 8, 2020 6:36 am
OOC:
Parley, I think. The unspoken threat is your leverage.
Apr 8, 2020 7:41 am
"You are wrong to mistake my diplomacy and decorum for cowardice. And you are quick to defend your clandestine actions by turning the accusation on me. Sometimes combats are won over tea than over sword, unless you wish to engage my services for the latter as well. You were unwise not to inform me that there were other interested parties. Our agreement was for the acquistion of the scroll, not the elimination of all other contenders.

Nonetheless, I consider my commitment still unfulfilled. I shall seek the Changgok to retrieve the scroll. Should you wish that I succeed, I suggest you supply me with the information I need, as much as you are prepared to reveal. I am a man of honour and my discretion is inviolable."
