Gameplay - The Dragon That Opposed an Empress

Mar 26, 2020 6:28 pm
You gather your belongings from the inn and with scarcely a word to Mont, settle your tabs, saddle your hippogriffs and launch. On your way east past the wall, a patrol tries to intercept you but the sudden appearance of an adult brass dragon captures their attention sufficiently to allow you to flee the city.

Half an hour later, a shadow above you tells of you accompanying companion, the dragon Mordenth. He paces you for a time, high above you beyond the drifting clouds, higher than your hippogriffs can fly. In the late afternoon, he flies faster and outpaces you.

When you arrive at the island you camped on previously, you find the elf da'Norto Illianstar preparing a meal on a campfire - salt crusted seafish served on a bed of lightly spicy noodles and a selection of crisp winter vegetables. He serves you on brass plates with brass cutlery. To accompany, a heady mead-like wine is served in brass goblets.

He continues in the common tongue, "I do not enter that land anywhere near Allaya's Cove, for it is protected by the one you have met, and we dragons guard our territory fiercely. But we must go there now, and hope she looks charitably upon us.

I know you have more questions, but answer some of mine. Tell me the story of this empress, of Pananthys, and how you all came to be involved in such lofty affairs."
Mar 26, 2020 6:45 pm
Mavis sits cross-legged on the floor, her plate in her lap. At Mordenth's questions, she gestures to her companions for the tale, as she would also like to hear of their adventures. She quickly scoffs down her food, places the plate to her side, and rocks side-to-side to bury her buttocks into the earth. Mavis is sitting comfortably with hands upturned in her lap - like a nursery child awaiting story time.

Yes. Please recount the 61 pages of chapter 1 for my benefit!

OOC:
I'll finish making a post later tonight recounting the tales of Ruby and co.
Mar 27, 2020 3:15 am
Ruby stands up, electing herself the storyteller. "Oh it was fierce, harrowing, fantastical tale! The hobgoblins were coming to our cozy little town, and so the mayor decided it was time to act! He sent us to investigate what brought them to our locale, and we were met with violence on multiple occasions, I took down so many! Anyways we discovered they were after...dragons!" It would be easy to assume Ruby is upsaleing the story because of de'Narto, but that's a lie.

"And so it was a race, but we were quite mistaken. By the time we approached the dragon's lair only their child, Zabonath. Onoth, Onat? Anyways we discovered the mighty dragon Pananthys was being held by a whole army of hobgoblins, Vermillion Reavers I think. We traveled the countryside, recruiting far and wide till we had a force to match their own. We launched a daring rescue mission, and managed to free Pananthys. It was awesome." Ruby takes a big swig of her wine, finding herself parched.
OOC:
That wasn't everything. Quick someone with more knowledge fill in the blanks.
Mar 27, 2020 4:33 am
Hehsh adopts a thespian pose, and gestures wildly, complementing Ruby's dramatic flare. "But that's not all! NO! We were forced to gather allies for the hobgoblins are fierce foes. From the desert, from the mountains, from the rivers." His voice takes a darker tone. "Turns out one of us can't swim." Hasan gets a dirty look. "We gathered our army and rested for one night, attacking with the dawn! Woe be tide our foes! On bestial mounts gifted by Abilonii, we charged, slaying countless. Somewhere along the line, Ruby ate an unknown amount of souls. With tremendous courage, we hew the chains holding mighty Pananthys, and the rest, as they say, is history."

And at the risk of being tonally dissonant:

After Ruby's performance Mavis gives her a nod, a wink, and a thumbs-down - down being the dwarven direction for all things good.
She briefly wishes there was popcorn, before becoming absorbed in Hehsh's tale.

Hehsh will recall Great Delta as the city you stopped in a few days earlier where you fought the sand demons during the sand storm.
Mar 27, 2020 3:45 pm
That's the story. I was late to the party. I was there for the rescue mission, but none of the before action.
Mar 31, 2020 12:35 pm
da'Norto Illianstar listens intently to your story come together. "Hobgoblins, and an alliance of their allies. This Vermillion Reavers sound fearsome and bent on conquest. I would not get involved save for their depredations on Pananthys, and Veringvox.

I cannot judge you fairly. You seem to have some abilities, but against an army, you'll fairy poorly, I suspect. We will need to work around that, find you some way to help."

He watches the fire, his eyes seeming to glow with more light than the reflected flames should cause.

"How far will you go? Will you come with me beyond the desert wastes, to the empire that lies beyond? To a land filled with evil forces bent on treachery and the conquest of all? To risk everything in a bold gambit?

Will you give up who you are and become what the world needs?"
Mar 31, 2020 1:07 pm
Give up who you are
That was the bargain, the trade, the contract.

Give up who you are
At her core, Mavis was a dwarf, and dwarves work differently to the skylanders.
Take a human, remove their personality, their humour, and their emotion - it would be called 'stripping them of their humanity' - as though humanity was a layer that was applied over them, like skin.
Dwarves were inside out. Their centre was dwarven. Remove a dwarf's personality, humour, and emotion - the result would be distilled dwarf.

Give up who you are
When her clan had sent her on this quest, Mavis understood that self-sacrifice might be needed.
What was this bargain, if not the definition of self-sacrifice?
Her clan expected it, and she was of the Cloudsea. A true dwarf would never refuse her clan.

Give up who you are
Aye. Tha can 'ave me. Replied Mavis without hesitation.
She could say nowt else. It's who she was. Was.

Give up who I am? I gave up control of my life to join the army. Then, I gave my soul to my God. This will just be another time of many where I have become what is needed.

I agreed to help and my word is all I have left. I am in.
Mar 31, 2020 10:48 pm
Ruby is finding all these questions rather intense. This is a lot to spring on us, I suppose I've already changed since we got involved. Since I left Uproot. How much further though, what kind of changes would be required? Guess I'll never know unless I join in.

Ruby gives a thumbs up. "People need help, and we're the ones who can do that."
Apr 2, 2020 12:07 am
Mordenth picks at his own plate, takes a small bite, sips his wine, and dabs his lips with a hankerchief.

"Pananthys and I were mates, long ago, or at least, as close to mates as would make any difference. We parted, and Veringvox gave her what I could not. Devotion, I suppose. The greater passion that comes from surrender and acceptance. That wasn't me, and we left each others' company. They have a child you say? Wondrous." He looks longly into the fire, his eyes pulsing with the heat.

"This isn't about her, or me, or the little one, or even Veringvox. This is about rejection. The forces of the east are arrayed against us. Ever in the past, their own bickering and internecine strife has kept them from being a threat. At the center of it all, the hobgoblins, who have caused much of the bitterness and turmoil. Now, I surmise they have turned that against them, blamed outsiders for their own mischief and united the dark against the light. She and I spoke of this possibility, long ago, but never before has a hobgoblin chief had the fortitude to unite all of the disparate races into a whole. I don't know how she managed it, this empress. Others have tried. Tried and died. That she has gotten as far as you have said, has eliminated one of the greatest guardians on that side of the inland sea, bodes not well for the rest of us. We need to know more. So here is my plan."

He looks at each of you, his blazing eyes fading to a light, natural violet elven hue.

"We become them. We use magic to adopt their forms, not as illusion, but permanently. We enter their empire, we find their secrets and then we use that information either to destroy their cohesion, or unite the gentle nations to the impending doom. If we survive, then the magic can be undone and you can return to your lives. As you were."

Again, he looks at each of you, his eyes measuring your hearts.

"Be honest. Is this something that you can take upon yourselves? This wretched burden and terrible risk? If we are found, death will not be our release though we will wish it so."
Apr 2, 2020 12:39 am
If you will excuse me for a moment, I would like to pray on this. I think it is a solid plan, and I am up for it...but the form is one loathe to my God, and I need to know if it is acceptable.

Garth leaves the area and finds a quiet spot. He concentrates on his holy mark.

Gond, a great evil is threatening all that is good in the world. To fight them I would change my form to 9ne of them. My mark of obedience would have to be masked as well. Please let me know if this is unacceptable to you.
Apr 2, 2020 4:24 am
Ruby raises her hand. "To be clear, we're going to become...Hobgoblins? How will that work with-" Ruby gestures to all of her. "-This?" While Ruby's questions seems trivial in nature, her voice indicates this is a serious matter.
Apr 2, 2020 8:45 am
Aye Mavis repeats.

Some part of her soul raised a hand, wanting to ask whether she'd really thought about it. The rest of her dwarven soul - the stubborn part - ignored it, rolling its soley eyes. Not circumspection again! it thought, Doesn't it know that we've already answered this question? For a dwarf to change their mind would be to admit that they had been wrong. They could be made to admit that, but you'd need to beat the confession out of them.
Apr 2, 2020 1:29 pm
"Hobgoblins, yes. Your size and general shape would remain, only your appearance."
Apr 2, 2020 9:34 pm
Wow that was way more literal than Hehsh would have thought.

Become a hobgoblin? But Hehsh just figured out he was a dragon! He rather liked the idea of being a dragon. He shook his head. He is Hesh, and when this is over, he will still be Hehsh. Probably. "How long would we be-err hobgoblins?"

"Ah." With her question answered Ruby scratches her chin as she contemplates this choice. No use asking playing 20 questions over the semantics, He seems like he's got a smart head on his shoulders, I bet his plan is very thorough. Despite this internal self reassurance she elects to wait and see what De'narto has to say.
Apr 3, 2020 12:19 pm
"You would be hobgoblins indefinitely. Until you had someone transform you into your original form, or a new form, the change would be permanent. If it were temporary, then the magic would be apparent to even novice magicians."

He let's that sink before he continues. "There is a wizard in Great Delta who can perform this feat when we arrive. You would only need return to her to have the magic reversed."
Apr 3, 2020 5:53 pm
"Well...I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. For the people." Ruby still has shades of apprehension, but is committed to this drastic plan.
Apr 3, 2020 6:11 pm
Mavis beams.
Well if it’s only skin, an’ flesh, an’ bones, an’ organs, an’ stuff then what we waitin’ for?
She had been afraid he’d say that she would stop being a dwarf!

Qralloq sent a note to Machiabelly
The following day you fly to Great Delta, arriving in the early afternoon. You make great time the winds and updrafts work in your favor.

Mordenth sends you ahead, to go to the Pointed Slipper. As a giant dragon he'll draw every eye, and he prefers to not make a spectacle, will make his way separately. He veers inland before you get too close.

Great Delta is much as you left it, just less sandstormy and demon-infestedy. The city bustles both in the poor sections in the old river needs and within the walls on the island.

You find the Pointed Slipper easily enough, not far from the inn you stayed at last time.
Apr 7, 2020 4:20 am
I guess we should get rooms and a good meal. It may be a while before we have either again.
Apr 7, 2020 5:56 am
Mavis shouts through the blast of the wind as they ride the Hippogriffs.
Garth! We best warn stable lads it'll be 'obgoblins collecting us mounts - mebbe get receipt or summat. Probably best we get some robes with 'oods to cover faces an'all if we ent to stand out when mekin' way back to inn.

Mavis thinks it might be a good idea to invest the last of her gold in a disguise kit. If the need arises, she might be able to disguise herself as herself (as at least cover the red hobgoblin skin).
Apr 7, 2020 5:58 am
I am hoping our new friend has enough pull to smooth those kind of things over.
Apr 7, 2020 6:07 am
Mavis nods,
Aye, an' ahm 'oping ah don't get slotted - dunt stop me wearin' armour though.
That counts as wisdom for a dwarf.
Apr 7, 2020 6:16 am
"Hah! Armor. That's funny." Hehsh will wait for his father to make himself known, enjoying a good meal with whoever will join him while he waits. He idly wonders if his skin will still be as hard as his scales when he is a hobgoblin. He does not like this plan.

"I hoe not, armor is way tooo uncomfortable for me. I wonder what hobgobs wear casually anyway, it's hard to know when every one we've run across is in a military outfit." Just want to know what you're telling the stable keeper, heh.
Apr 10, 2020 6:35 am
"But not just any hobgoblins! They have to...uh, be us? Look we'll call them by name. That one is Beaky" Hehsh points to his mount. "If a hobgoblin comes along and doesn't ask for Beaky, it's not us." Hehsh realizes that didn't make anything clearer.
Apr 10, 2020 1:34 pm
The stablepeople accept your instructions.

You go to the Pointed Slipper. It's an unusual sorry of tavern, full of gauzy curtains and unusually spicy smoke. Instead of tables, you find sitting areas filled with pillows that look remarkably clean for the atmosphere. Scantily dressed purple in thin, light, exotic fabrics lounge about smoking from strange kettles (hookahs) and sipping tea from small filigreed glass demitasses. The gauzy curtains lend an otherworldly and somewhat anonymous experience.

Walking through you ascertain the Illianstar isn't there yet, so you find a table. The staff brings you a selection of small rocks for the hookah, a tray of honeyed dates and small vine leaf wrapped delicacies, and a pitcher of cool, milky tea, with cups and plates for all of you.
Apr 10, 2020 2:29 pm
Mavis sniffs the tea suspiciously. She hasn’t had a decent brew since coming above ground.
Eee Ruby. Tea’s clap cold. Does tha’ think we ought tell um?

But the hookah is much more to her liking. Mavis takes long drags whilst people watching, creating stories in her head about these people and their lives.

Garth enjoys the food, but stays away from the smoke.

Mavis discovers that some of the hookah choices are mind altering substances, and those are the direct requests for some patrons. But all in all, those dream riders aside, most people are here for an authentic cultural tradition. It's "The Feast of Aldrus the Wise."

OOC:
Kinda tempted. After all, one of the seven dwarfs was called dopey.
Apr 10, 2020 4:20 pm
Ooo, how exotic. Not one too back down from trying new delights, Ruby graciously accepts the food and tea. Because she can actually comprehend Mavis's warning she hesitates, but doesn't back down from sudden challenge. "I think it's supposed to be cold. If I spit it out that's a sign something is amiss." Tentatively she brings her lips to the cup, sipping the tea. She swallows, eyes closed in contemplation as she explores the flavor profile. "This...is good. Different, but good." Satisfied with the result she smiles and places the cup down, and begins to eye up this...smoke machine.

She grabs one of the "hoses" and watches a few of the patrons (and Mavis) to study their technique, having not smoked in quite some time, and never from such an apparatus. Well, they look like they're having fun, time to make some memories. She takes a drag...
OOC:
I would also like the mind altering substance please. We are world saving heroes.
Apr 10, 2020 4:24 pm
And who would blame you. You have a long ride across the desert ahead of you, who wants to be sober for that?

The hostess suggests you try the blue: it's the new red.
Apr 10, 2020 4:47 pm
Whilst giving Ruby a cheeky grin, Mavis takes a long draw on the blue.
Her big, brown dwarven eyes glaze over as she falls, falls, falls, and...

Pictures herself in a cart in a mine shaft
With tangerine seams and marmalade shale.
Somebody calls her, she answers quite slowly,

Music Time
I spent too much time on this post.
Ruby is starting to feel a little funny. Now really funny, like her hands are floating funny. Now it's pitch black and everyone is gone. Oh look, she is standing before a massive pile of corpses now, each cold body staringback at her with glowing red eyes and twisted malformed faces. Some are familiar: enemies, friends, even family she used to know all those years ago. She can't run for her legs do not move; she can't fight them all for they are legion. And so she is consumed by the charging mass, her entire being smothered in the conglomeration of bodies. And yet she does not die, even while she is being crushed and pushed around the writhing mass. At some point Ruby can't pinpoint the squeezing, pushing, pulling sensation ceases, and she realizes once again she is alone in the dark.

Suddenly the darkness departs, leaving Ruby in what she will later describe as a barren landscape of monochrome, disrupted occasionally by brief flashes of color. She can't see anything on the horizon, nor another soul in sight. Ruby is confident this is death, or at least the closest approximation she's gonna get given her drug induced vision.

Ruby decides not to share this experience with anyone else. They might think she's going a little crazy.

Hmmm. While Hehsh can see why other, lesser species would enjoy hookah, it doesn't hold much appeal to him. Afterall, as a half dragon, blowing smoke is a small minor indulgence for him. The tea is pleasantly refreshing though.

He unknowingly hums along with Mavis. That is a catchy tune.

He still doesn't know how to feel about his father. This is afterall, a curious rendezvous.
Apr 14, 2020 1:32 am
After an hour, Mordenth in the guise of da'Norto Illianstar enters. He comes to your table indirectly and then sits. "The wizard is two doors down. The door is concealed behind a sandstone wall. Watch when I open it so you know the trick. The thing we could decide before we go is who should he scry upon. He will keep an eye on you during your infiltration and if you get into too much trouble, he'll contact me, concealed nearby, and I'll try and extract you. We want to keep your magical aura as mundane as we can, so you don't rouse suspicion. Scrying is the best way to keep tabs as he can end the effect if anyone begins to notice it."
Apr 14, 2020 2:13 am
Hopefully we will be close together, so really any of us would be fine.

Garth thinks for a moment.

Speaking of magical auras, what about magic items we are carrying?
Apr 14, 2020 2:47 am
"Many hobgoblin heroes carry such weaponry. Spoils of war and of other dark deeds. Indeed, their possession sells your image as sell swords and reavers."
Apr 14, 2020 2:53 am
Excellent. Mavis is as good a scrying target as any...if you don't mind that is, Mavis.
Apr 14, 2020 5:59 am
Hehsh is fine with this. He doesn't like the idea of someone watching him, at least while he is a hobgoblin.
Apr 14, 2020 6:10 am
Machiabelly says:
if you don't mind that is, Mavis.
Little Mavis took a man sized hit, and is still coming down. She nods at Garth with serenity of Buddha Axebreaker (who was a pretty serene dwarf despite his name). She answers Garth slowly, keen to pass on her important cosmic insights.
To distant lands. Takes both my hands. Never untrue with golden blue.

She smiles at Garth, strokes his face and sighs, eyes unfocussed,
Through the ages she's heading west. From far away. Stays for a day. Never untrue with golden blue.

Blinking at Garth, she tries again to help him grasp the infinity of infinities.
I scry with my little eye. Little eye. Little. I.
Scry. Little. I.

Smiling she slowly scans the room.
Where are the Barrelstalk crisps? There should be crisps. Did the crisps travel west?
Apr 16, 2020 6:16 pm
You eventually wind down enough to go to the wizards shop. You find a sandstone wall, and Mordenth places his hand on the wall and says, "Castronignam" after which the wall becomes translucent and he steps through it.

Inside you find a tidy courtyard with a sitting bench and a small collection of well watered shrubs and plants in ceramic pots, and a small sandstone hut with no windows. A stone door is etched in the wall. Touching it lightly, it opens smoothly on cleverly hidden hinges.

Inside the hut is a sitting room with eight chairs along the walls and no other adornments. A lizardfolk man in neatly tied wrappings stands against the far wall.

Mordenth stands to the side so you can all enter. "Castronignam, these are the individuals we spoke of. We need disguises that will not be detectable to the magically sensitive, disguises suitable for entering the Vermillion Reaver camps."

The man purses his lips. "What forms would you like? Hobgoblin may be the obvious choice, but other races can be found in their ranks."
Apr 16, 2020 6:51 pm
"Hmmmm. Would there be lizard men amongst the enemy?" Being a hobgoblin isn't the ugliest thing Hehsh could be transformed into (at least this plan didn't involve him turning into a human or gods forbid an elf) it would be nice if he could retain some of his handsome features.
Apr 16, 2020 7:40 pm
Ruby raises her hand, speaking politely. "Oh I didn't know we had options. What 'forms' do you have for...smaller people."
Apr 16, 2020 7:44 pm
"Lizardfolk, yes. Most races have a few who seek the glories of war."

To Ruby, he suggests, "Goblin, or Kobold will be common. There are rarer races if you prefer to stand out." His expressive eyebrow tells you that he casts aspersions on the notion of standing out.
Apr 16, 2020 10:01 pm
Mavis seems put out by the option of changing her mind.
Ah said ah'd be 'obgoblin, an' ah meant it. Now stop fartin' 'bout and let's get it done.

She nods to herself. It needed saying.

People say dwarves are stubborn. Obviously people are right about that. But why?
Dwarves feel that to their minds are who they are. It's not like any other body part is helping with the thinking. If they change their minds then they change who they are. They'd rather be wrong than somebody else. Ironically - that's exactly what she's about to become.
Apr 16, 2020 10:54 pm
Hobgoblin is fine. If we are to be a small war band, would it be normal for us all to be hobgoblins, or would something else be in charge?

A thought occurs to him

Will we be able to speak to them?
Apr 17, 2020 3:38 am
"Now now, lets not be hasty. What exactly...stands out?"
Apr 17, 2020 3:54 am
He says, "Most hobs speak the Common tongue, and also the language of Goblins. I can't help you there. Try not to attract too much attention and maybe no one will ask you who you were in Goblin."

To Ruby, he says, "There is the dark race of gnomes, the Snirfneblin, and the gray dwarves, though they're bigger than you Ratfolk. Probably others, but I haven't studied them all."
Apr 17, 2020 5:22 am
To Ruby all those choices seem rather unique. But only one had horns, which Ruby always thought were nifty in their own way. "I would like to be...a kobold, seems the smartest, definitely."

Garth shimmers and changes into a hobgoblin. Six feet tall and about 185 pounds of muscle. His skin is a dark reddish orange. He is wearing a breast plate and has a crossbow. The silver brand on his palm is no longer visible, but he can feel it, that must be another reassuring sign from his God.

Nice job.

His voice is a guttural growl.

Short for a Hobgoblin, Mavis would stand at 5’ 6" if she wore heels. Her soft brown eyes replaced by piercing ice blue in light yellow sclera. Her bob remains, now covering the suggestion of horns, coupled with deep red skin and a natural sneer suggest a heritage of the hobgoblin iron shadow - their secret police. Her sly graceful movement remains, but instead of a crouching padding lope Mavis now darts on her tiptoes.
Apr 19, 2020 10:06 pm
Ruby goes into far too much detail as she imagines her scaly alter-ego. She asks for 'average' height, gray-ish reptilian skin, amber eyes, those 'spike-scale things; adorn her body, and she has lean muscle not unlike her own. One detail she forgot about was the lack of hair, so that'll have to go; luckily her new tail and black horns make up for it, and she constantly pokes at them. Her apparel is similar to her own, but she does request a harem skirt, citing how comfortable and flexible they looked.

"Guesss I'm a dragon now too, hehe." She jokes, her snakelike tongue emphasizing all uses of the letter 's'

Hesh speaks so quickly he almost cuts Ruby off. "No! No you are not. " He then takes a look at his hands. They are uncommonly slender were before they were thick and they are a sickly green color. His scales are slick and green. Muscle in strange places power his movement as he examines himself. Involuntarily he tastes the air with his tongue and swishes his tail. He cocks his head to eyeball the party with a yellow eye. The head cock is mandatory: his eyes are on either side of his head now. "Thisss will take ssome getting ussed to."

The days flight across the desert is exhausting, the sun blasting your with unbearable heat. You maintain a close formation with Hehsh, who is the focus of a spell from the wizard Kolrya Honalmire which protects those nearby from succumbing to the heat. When you stray too far, the hotblooded hippogriffs immediately begin to flag, losing strength and altitude.

After the long day, you arrive at the Sharkfin Mountains, huge slabs of slate pushed into the sky by some ancient cataclysm. You climb out of the lowland desert high into the mountainous air, and the temperature drops remarkably. When you camp that evening, your mounts shivering from exhaustion and the cold, you make a fire in a shallow chasm, but the flames seem to provide little heat.

When Mordenth arrives from scouting, he uses his flame breath to heat a rock face, and things seem brighter after. You cook a small meal over your meager fire, and Mordenth lays the rest out for you.

"From here you walk. Hippogriffs are a delicacy and would be slaughtered for meat. Let us not subject the loyal beasts to such a fate. You will descend into the empire by a path, it will be obvious to find. This will take you to a mining outpost, and then to the highway south. You may need to fight to prove yourselves.

We are close to the army. To the northern capital, Ashenfall, a once abandoned orcish citadel that now is a city of the Vermillion Reavers and the Empire. You will need to infiltrate Ashenfall, avoid becoming slaves, find Veringvox, and if you can free him. If you need my help, call for it, but if I show up, every spear in the empire will turn toward us and it will be a close thing. I will be watching little ones. Fare well."

The following morning, you make your way down. It is a rough path, but soon you come upon a road of sorts, a switchback down to the mountain plateau below. You find yourself in the afternoon at the mining town, built along a set of stepped caves with only a few stone free-standing buildings. Rough characters, bugbears and orcs and goblins mostly, move sledges of rock and other goods from the surrounding mines into town. You find a tavern, carved into naked dark gray rock, but a rowdy crew of bugbears hang outside. When they see your band, they grow silent. Watching, predatory, uncertain.

Ruby is at this point no stranger to people attempting to 'size her up'. She does not falter in her approach (Although she will let Garth go first), deciding to try and discern just what these toughies are planning. "They were so loud just a minute ago. You think they're gonna try to haze us?" She whispers. They wouldn't try to start a fight would they?

Fear is weakness here. he whispers.

Garth doesn't slow down or give the bugbears a second look as he leads the group into the bar.
Apr 22, 2020 4:24 am
Ruby follows after, realizing it is their group who are the big-shots. "Hey Mavis, stare down one of them on the way in." She whispers, feeling rather deviant. Bad to the bone, that's me.
Apr 22, 2020 6:32 am
Mavis slows, then stops, staring into the eyes of the closest bugbear with her ice blue irises.
What's tha chunterin' on, tha saft ha'p'orth? Hmm? Nowt?

She allows her form's natural sneer to become a smile. It's weird how a hobgoblin smile is even colder than their sneer.

She awaits a response.

Mavis swaggers in, giving the bugbear an imperious sideways glance.

She does so whilst wondering whether listening to Ruby’s peer pressure is a wise long term strategy.

Hehsh will give a very reptilian snarl at the bugbear. There is much hissing. the snake tongue flicks. Hehsh is very willing to fuck up ANYONE who tries to eat his best pal Beaky.

[ +- ] tavern
Inside, you find a few orcs sitting on benches along one wall, horned boots propped up on chairs. They're drinking from large lead steins, and telling jokes in low tones. They glare at you suspiciously when you enter.

A half-man tends bar, some devil in his lineage giving him light scales across his body and eyes that burn as flames. He looks over and places both hands I the edge of his bar counter. "Names Fisky. This is the Severed Spine. You hear for drinks, or food, or both?"
Apr 24, 2020 3:54 am
Both. Beer and whatever is in the pot.
Apr 24, 2020 4:53 am
Ruby is always up for trying the local food, undercover or not. Propping herself onto a stool she looks excitedly at the booze selection, wondering if any of it is domestic or they maintain more of a 'micro-brew' selection. "Make it two barkeep."
Apr 24, 2020 5:51 am
Mavis nods approval at Ruby's suggestion and takes a stool.
Aye. Ah'll tek two an' all.

Noticing the orcs joking, she asks Ruby loudly enough for the orcs to hear.

Twelve foot o' hemp an' noose.

The host comes back with your drinks and meals (stew served in bowls with bread just kind of dropped onto the table beside).

The orcs mumble to themselves then one of them says 'noose' and they all laugh. They probably just got the joke after working it through a bit.

After the host steps back. One of the orcs stands up and slaps his chest. "Me Qorth. Fight! Or scram!"

He seems to be asking for a one on one fisticuffs duel.

Gi o'er! Pack it in!

Like a primary school teacher Mavis holds up a single finger to Garth, and offers a shrug to the orc as if to say:
Murder hobs eh? What can you do?

Sweeping her hand back towards Ruby, Mavis offers the little one for sacrifice.
Try the mighty mite...

Grinning evilly, and without taking her eyes off the orc, Mavis says loudly over her shoulder to Ruby

Apr 27, 2020 12:25 pm

Ruby almost spits up some of her drink as Mavis so kindly offers Ruby for a duel. And here she was going to enjoy the spectacle, seeing as everything hadn't devolved to a full on brawl. "I'm not a mite." She turns to gives Mavis an "accusatory" look, but ultimately decides it's better not to be scared of such a few tough customers.

Sighing she hops down from her seat, pulling out her staff she spins it a few times in front of her before assuming a more relaxed stance. "You don't have to fight if you don't want to, no pressure!" She shouts genuinely over the current brawl.
Apr 27, 2020 5:05 pm
Another orc will accept her challenge. "Kick the kobold!" He shouts which quickly becomes the rallying cry for his raucous friends.

Ruby can attack first.
Apr 27, 2020 5:21 pm
Mavis takes up the chant
Kick t' kobold! Kick t' kobold!

When asked later, she'll claim that it was part of team-building exercise to help the party forge a relationship with the orcs.
Whilst chanting, she attempts to move into, through and then behind the orcs. Just in case it all has to get a bit "stabby".

Hehsh will cast a minor illusion of a kobold kicking an orc mid air and have it animate go in time with Mavis's chant. Sort of like an animated neon sign. The kobold is doing a spin kick.
Apr 29, 2020 12:12 pm
Garth raps the orc with the staff.

Beside him, Ruby reacts to the sword with a series of bone breaking strikes that send the orc craving into the wall; he falls lies bloody and still on the floor.

The first orc sees the display and holds up his hands, stepping away and ending combat.

The orcs friends check the man, but it's hopeless. Two drag him to the front door and toss him outside (after taking his coins).

"Kobold kick you!" They take up the chant, and begin to laugh and joke with you, congratulating Ruby on a great fight.
Apr 29, 2020 12:20 pm
Mavis winces at Ruby's brutal assault muttering an ecky thump as the orc slides down the wall.
She gets back into character and shouts a GRUUMSH! to send the warrior on his way.
As the tide of bonhomie (bonorcie?) washes around the room, she tries to start up a few casual conversations about what everybody is up to (without probing too deeply).

OOC:
Do we know if magic users/clerics are ok in this world? Like if Garth casts a spell, are we busted?

There is no prohibition of magic, nor would it be considered suspicious.
Apr 29, 2020 8:20 pm
"Oh. Uh, whoops." Ruby hadn't meant to kill him. Then again he came at her with a sword, so she'll chock this one up to being a "neutral" point in her career. Choosing not to dwell on the ethics of the fight at this time she scurries back to her food.
OOC:
Well that's another soul for Ruby.

He looks at the bartender.

Beer!
Apr 30, 2020 5:47 am
Mavis laughs like a callous drain at Garth’s remark.
May 5, 2020 4:29 am
The orcs respect might and daring. They are not necessarily cruel so much as callous. The one drops his quarrel with Garth and they drink mightily with you, buying you tankards of a lumpy beer, raw with nutrition. Indeed, after even one, you feel measly too full for proper food.

They are mercenaries, calling themselves the Demon's Glaive. They finished up a job recently, crushing a few lazy workers to motivate a crew for a foreman. Now they are drinking their pay waiting for another job that keeps them out of the hob army for a few more weeks.
OOC:

May 6, 2020 2:16 am
The orcs tell Garth that there is a hill giant in a mine lower on the mountain. His presence has shut down the mines operation. Killing the beast would bring good coin and add to their reputation.
Mavis finds out that the Ashenfall is an old citadel survived by effectively a tent city. Tens of thousands of hobgoblins bivouac there accompanied by legions of mercenaries, vassal races, including the might of the orcish horde.

The citadel proper is the base of the empress, her generals, and their prizes. Few enter, besides slaves, and many that enter are never seen again. It is speculated that the empress feasts on the life force of her captives.

Lastly, the press gangs are always looking for cannon fodder. The only defense is a reputation, as it isn't worth the effort trying to keep the mighty against their will.
May 6, 2020 5:09 am
Hehsh tongue flicks thoughtfully. Being a lizardman is oddly satisfying. Not as good as being a dragon, but still, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than being human. "Perhapssss, we shhhould be killing this hill giant and be takingssss it loot. It will give us reputation." And hopefuly treasure for his hoard. Hehsh is still part dragon.

"Ooo, that would be good! We've -well most of us-" Ruby gives a quick look at Mavis, and Hehsh. Was Hehsh there? Ruby can't quite remember, but maybe if she kept drinking it would improve her memory. "-have fought big monsters before. We're quite experienced."
May 6, 2020 5:39 am
OOC:
FIRST OF ALL!!!! Hehsh was there when we fought the troll. Second of all, I think that weird wight counts as a big monster. Or at least a scary monster.
May 6, 2020 5:56 am
OOC:
SECOND OF ALL!!! The dust devil also counts.
Besides, before she met you, Mavis killed a drow priestess - but you wouldn't know her, she went to another school.
Mavis looks to her colleagues, nodding and cracking her knuckles
A hill giant? Aye. She's up for that.
May 13, 2020 2:05 am
You get rooms at the inn and sleep fine that night.

The next night, the orcs find you at breakfast. They're not super awake during the day, but will accompany you to the mine with the giant problem.

You have a thoroughly disheartening breakfast, then make your way farther down the mountain.

The day is overcast, the sun peering through thin ash colored clouds. After two hours, you find yourself at a small mining community. Asking around for Foreman Grekk, you get to a warehouse with a table inside. A gnollish looking feller is minding the books, chewing on a splintered bone. A femur, perhaps.

He looks up and snarls, "I paid my taxes, worm scum, get bent!"
May 13, 2020 2:33 am
Shut your gob. If I was here to take money from you, you would already be dead. What can you tell me about the giant, other than that you haven't killed it.
May 13, 2020 3:28 am
The gnoll gets up, lumbers around the table. He looks you up and down dubiously. Drool runs from his snout. "You're no Vermilion Reaver. You a merc?"
May 13, 2020 4:12 am
I am the answer to your problems.

He hooks a thumb to the rest of the party.

We don't like giants. We do like money.
May 13, 2020 6:17 am
Mavis steps forward to stand next to Garth. She nods agreement at his words, but mainly she nods because those lines sounded cool.

She feels that Garth has said it all, so she just stands there and adds,
Aye
which wasn't her most sparkling dialogue, but why waste wit on a gnoll?
May 13, 2020 12:01 pm
The gnoll gnashes his teeth for a moment.

"What deeds have you done?"

You got the impression from the drinking binge with the orcs that reputation here is key. The extent that anyone will take you seriously depends on your accomplishments. You sense the gnoll may not even tell you where the mine and giant is until he is convinced this isn't a waste of his time.

His manner also tells you that he is impressed by your gear, and is taking you more and more seriously than when you first entered.
May 13, 2020 5:30 pm
Garth casts Thaumaturgy causing his voice to boom and then flicks his wrist so the magic staff appears.

We Defeated the high priest of Gond, and took this staff from his dead hand.
OOC:
Garth has been in battles against humanoids, so he will mention those. Especially the one where his whole company was wiped out.
Those are some of our exploits.

Timing it to the end of Thaumaturgy...

Tell us what we need to know.
May 14, 2020 12:37 pm
The gnoll accepts your story and relaxes a bit. Not a lot.

"We mine copper. The hill giant moved in, convinced it was gold. The brute sealed the main entrance and has a dozen miners in there with him. He's eaten a few by now. I can get you into that mine through an air shaft. You kill the giant, then break out. I pay you. 200 gold plus 20 for each miner that's alive and can work the mine again."
May 14, 2020 4:10 pm
"Does he have any weaknesses? The eyes perhaps?" Ruby would be foolish not to ask. Hopefully not, I bet giants are at leave 15 feet tall. I can't jump that high.
May 14, 2020 4:12 pm
The gnoll grunts in a drooly fashion. "Eyes, nutsack, throat. Same as anyone."
May 14, 2020 4:20 pm
Mavis nods. Aye. Eyes, nutsack, throat. that would have been her answer too. Heart and liver too, if you’re feeling ambitious.

Mavis is feeling nostalgic, creeping down a mineshaft to assassinate a foe, missions just like mother her used to make.

Oh aye. Where’s shaft then? Tha’s all don’t mind I ah ‘ave first crack, does tha?
May 14, 2020 5:03 pm
You know I never stand in your way.

He turns to the gnoll.

Let's go
May 17, 2020 1:37 am
The gnoll, Foreman Grekk, leads you a quarter mile up some switchback trails to a wooden building. As you get close, you can see that it is little more than a ventilation his to keep rain from going into a hole. The hood slides to the side revealing the shaft.

The hole is carved roughly into the stone. It's about a pace wide in a side, more or less square. Adequate handholds make it looks like it would be fairly easy to climb down.

"At the bottom, you'll not know one way from another, but head uphill and that will take you to the entrance. The giant will be in that space as it's the biggest part of the cave."
May 17, 2020 3:20 am
We will be back before dark.

Garth turns and climbs down.

When we are all at the bottom...

Anyone want me to cast Elemental Weapon on their weapon? It becomes magical and does extra damage.

I will stay second row and trust to do some magic damage.
May 17, 2020 3:23 am
Free climbing down will require a Strength(Athletics) check.
May 17, 2020 3:41 am
Maybe we should tie off a rope.

Garth finds the climb wasn't as easy as he thought.

Rolls

Athletics - (1D20+4)

May 17, 2020 3:57 am
Garth makes it to the bottom well enough.

DC 10. A rope from the top would eliminate the need for a roll from the others, save the last person.

Also, it's very dark at the bottom.
May 17, 2020 4:08 am
OOC:
Do we have the vision of the races we are disguised as, and do they have night vision?
May 17, 2020 4:15 am
Ruby will pull out her good rope, doing as Garth suggests and finds a reasonable place to tie it up. Still leaves the lack of visibility. "Garth, don't move in case of holes or something. Hang on." She pulls out one of her torches and sparks it to life. knew these things would be handy.

Sliding down the rope with one hand while the other holds the torch she quickly inspects the ground to ensure there aren't actually any holes. "You want one? I've got plenty extra. Also I think my staff is already magical, but if you can make it stronger I won't say no."
May 17, 2020 4:23 am
With the rope tied off to the ventilation hood, you all climb down safely.

Torch light shows the carved tunnels stretching two ways. Thousands of footfalls have flattened the stone floor to as smooth finish.

Although the slope of gentle, Mavis knows which way is up hill and which way down.
May 17, 2020 5:52 am
Aye - If tha can can make dagger magical then ah’d like to use it to gi’ giant a clout.

Does tha’ want to ‘ang back whilst I gi’ it a look-see?

Mavis heads off up hill, clinging to the shadows.
OOC:
Mavis has +9 to stealth. If the giant is surprised, and she hits (with adv) then her first hit will count as a crit.

Can I suggest:
Mavis creeps down the corridor and waves for you to follow so you remain at a distance. When we find the giant, Mavis will stealthily approach and hopefully deliver the crit.

If the giant is surprised:
A crit will be 6d6+2d4+4 = average of 30 damage. It definitely won’t kill it - but it should upset it.
Then she bonus action dashes away (no opportunity attacks if it’s surprised).
By dashing away we might be able to pull the enraged giant into a trap. What trap? I don’t know. Do we have oil we can burn? Or any spells that would be useful? Are there props we can remove to drop the roof on it? Boulders we can roll on it?

It’s based on the assumption that we’ll just find a lone hill giant, and +9 stealth is enough to fix a bad roll.

Sure - and toe-to-toe with Ruby in the party we could probably take it.
I’m just looking for some environmental leverage.
Maybe when we find it, Mavis could climb up (+8 athletics) and take a look at the ceiling to see if there are large stalactites we can blast onto its head or *something*.
Anyway, stealth roll to make progress I guess.
Mavis starts to move towards the giant’s lair. She’s a little out of practice and isn’t as quiet as she’d hoped to be.

Correction to an earlier post: hobgoblins and kobolds have darkvision 60', so while it is dark in the tunnels, Garth child see just fine. However, lizardfolk do not so Hehsh will need light to see to target targets.
Mavis creeps up the tunnel until where it opens into a larger area. The hill giant is sitting in the floor gnawing on something, a person's leg it looks like. A large magical fire burns in the center. It is facing sideways to Mavis when she is at the mouth of the tunnel.

So far, she had remained silent and it hadn't noticed her.
May 17, 2020 3:15 pm
She raises a hand, and makes a complex set of hand gestures. They are guild sign - a tiny subset of hand gestures stolen from the drow for silent communication - but they would be incomprehensible to the party.

Dwarven underdark leather hunter guild sign includes expressions for:
Stay hidden - I will approach stealthily
Fan out, surround and wait
Prepare ambush
Get kettle on - ah’m gaspin’ fer cuppa

Mavis hunkers down to try and skirt around and approach the giant from the rear.
OOC:
Jeez - I just can’t roll today.

How big and hot does that fire look? I’m guessing he’s Huge, Mavis is medium. RAW that makes a shove impossible, but if he’s sitting down maybe a flying leap could push him into the fire? Maybe?

It seems too cool a story to not ask the question whether it looks at all likely Mavis could make a heroic athletics check to try and push him into his own fire. My dice have to change sometime.
OOC:
Garth or Hehsh - do you have anything that can embiggen those flames?

May 17, 2020 3:57 pm
OOC:
Lol - yeah, I get that. I would imagine advantage from size too. But Mavis has expertise in Athletics (+8), so it’s not that mental (whilst still being pretty mental).

But I don’t want to push it into a small camp fire for 1d6 damage. In Mavis’s estimation how fierce is that fire?

I know that the smart thing to do is take the shot - advantage to hit - assassinate crit damage for an average of 30HP. God! That’s making me yawn already.

But if I can attempt the much harder "the dwarf went flying across the cave with both feet and (pushed the giant into the fire) or (bounced off the giant)"... Ah, screw it - I don’t really care about the damage....
Mavis takes a few cautious steps backwards, shakes herself down... finds her mark... assumes her sprinter’s set... go!

Her little legs pound as she concentrates on the giant’s shoulders. If she can just plant her weight there, just take his balance, then maybe... just maybe...

Thump, thump, thump, getting faster now, thump-thump-thump, head up, focus, Mavis, focus, thumpthumpthump, the giant starts to turn, and hup!
OOC:
Awww - dice have no sense of fun! C’mon fate - I’d have taken a Nat 1 over a mediocre 13.

OOC:
Lol. That is a fun fact. Thank you.

You remember those kinematics questions that begin "A body in projectile motion..." - I never imagined that the "body" would one day be my d&d character's body.

Using kinematics and some conservation of energy - that means a giant could throw that rock vertically 120', imparting the same energy as propelling Mavis (at roughly half the mass) 240' vertically. Which is the same energy as 20d6 fall damage. It doesn't matter if she hits a wall - it's still energy. 20d6 is an average of 70HP damage, and thanks to d&d weirdness, it's probably not enough to instantly kill her.

Anyway - he's gotta catch Mavis first. I assume I'll get a contested check of some description.
Qralloq says:
Garths spell attack modifier is +6 (Wis + Prof) but an 11 still misses.

Ruby flys back a few feet from the impact of the club, barely managing to perform an aerial recovery and land on her feet. Okay, maybe Garth had the right idea by staying back. Not about to be deterred she leaps into the air and smacks at the giant's clubbing arm twice, and kicking the appendage as well. Hehsh summons the lightning. Or tries to. He's still getting used to this lizardman body. There are a few sparks that fly between is fingers. To his utter disgust they actually sting a little. He shakes out his hand and tries again. Really tries. With a hiss that he really wishes was a growl he charges the electricity into the palm of his hand. More. More. More.... Finally he holds a ball of energy in his hands. "Good enough." he says to no one in particular and hurls the ball of energy right at the giant's face.

Ruby is a little more wounded than she lets one, but you know that you're still in a dangerous position, and there is still the miners to rescue. Looking around, Mavis and Garth find a fair bit of bones tossed idly to the side. The bones are gnawed, split, and still have small bits of flesh, even though the rats and mice also feast. There could be four or five people, but it's hard to tell how many or what they were because of the damage.

There are four exits from the main cavern. The largest tunnel heads uphill and is blocked off by a huge pile assorted debris.

There are two tunnels leading downhill to either side, the one you entered by and a twin on the opposite side.

A fourth leads to what Mavis surmises would be an area for supplies and staging for the mine.
May 20, 2020 9:11 pm
Mavis, you are the expert in mines, we will follow your lead.
Which way should we go?

Hehsh is fairly certain that the bogey had no intrinsic value in itself, butt it will contaminate anything it comes in contact with reducing their value, so while you're carrying it, your things are less valuable than when you're not.

Mavis and Ruby sneak into the next room. A mess of miners are huddled together, looks like five of them. They don't notice you sneak in, but are paying attention to something else. Something in the shadows.

Twisting away from the dragons jaw, Mavis takes two steps back, draws a dagger, step to the side, duck and thrust.
It could almost be a dance... if she didn’t trip over her own feet.

Just noticed that was a natural 1. I know RAW crit fails aren’t a thing, but I don’t mind if you want to give that roll some mechanical disadvantage. I like the chaos of bad rolls.

Heheh finds an angle and the lightning takes the creature in the side. It lights up, crackling all over, then falls to the ground twitching and smoking.

The brief moment that it is crackling with lightning, you can see it better. It is not a dragon, although it does lol awfully like a black dragon. However, it does not have any wings, and is more squat and muscular. This is a drake. Or was a drake.

OK the giant is dead, now this thing. Is there anything else down here we need to kill?
May 22, 2020 11:01 pm
The miners get up, smelly and shaky. The smell of roasted giant meat is wafting into the area. "No. No more guards. We go now?"

The orcs miners are unaware of any treasure stockpile. "Just his boots," one says.
May 23, 2020 2:52 am
Alright. Let's grab those boots and get out of here.
May 23, 2020 5:58 pm
The frugal Mavis nods at Garth's order. There's probably a lot of useable leather on those boots.
May 23, 2020 6:43 pm
Ruby isn't entirely sold on the whole take-boots-as-a-reward proposal, but at least the miners haven't been consumed by a drago drake.
May 23, 2020 7:53 pm
You remove the giant's huge boots. They really stink.
May 23, 2020 8:38 pm
Garth casts identify on the boots.
May 23, 2020 8:51 pm
Boots of Thunder

Requires Attunement, pair required

These boots have 3 Charges, and regains 1d3 expended Charges daily at dawn. While wearing the pair of boots, you can use an action to expend 1 to 3 of its Charges to cast Thunderwave. The charges used determine the spell level. The associated saving throw is based on the stomper's Strength and Proficiency bonuses.

The boots will resize upon attunement to the wearer's size, footing perfectly.

OOC:
Realistically these don't do much damage. Burning all 3 charges will do an average of 9 or 18 points of damage (depending on the save) - both Ruby and Mavis can do more than that with regular actions.

They probably work best as:
a defence for anyone with poor AC should they get mobbed;
a niche situation where Ruby (with her speed) can get into the middle of a group of minions;
a very niche situation where moving a baddy back 10' will push them into danger.
May 26, 2020 3:25 pm
OOC:
We could always use them as a bribe somewhere along the line. We should have someone attune them so they are easier to carry though.
May 26, 2020 10:47 pm
OOC:
Truthfully I am dumbstruck the boots were even magical to begin with lol. Scaling with strength is kind of a bummer since none of us are using that too much. A bribe or trade is a good idea.

May 28, 2020 6:51 pm
Hehsh, why don't you put these on so you can attune them. Maybe they will be a good start to a hoard. The miners will have made it back. Let's go up and get famous. Unless anyone has anything else they want to do.
May 28, 2020 7:20 pm
Ruby shoots out a thumbs up. "Mission accomplished. This Mercenary work isn't so bad."
OOC:

May 28, 2020 7:29 pm
Mavis shuffles her feet. She’d been quite keen to see a non-dwarven mine, although she knew that if she started looking she’d want to spend days there - but Garth is the lawgiver, and that is sacred.
Aye Garth. Job’s a good ‘un.

But she still casts a curious look at their props.
OOC:
Sure. Let’s leave. That’s just Mavis being Mavis.
Jun 5, 2020 3:30 am
Where to? Did out through the main entrance, or find some other way out?
Jun 5, 2020 3:46 am
no way to get paid and famous if no one knows we did the job. Out the front door.
Jun 5, 2020 3:54 am
Putting the miners to work, despite their hunger and exhaustion they expertly demolish the giant's blockade, which, while is heavy stuff that's really jammed in there, isn't an engineering marvel by any stretch.

You soon find your way out into the clear air.

A small group including the gnoll are waiting. They seem... pleased may be over doing it. Relieved, maybe?
Jun 5, 2020 5:46 am
Mavis watches the miners work in quiet contemplation. She was never really a miner herself, but so much mountain dwarf culture is modelled on mining processes that the activity can't help but remind her of home. As they set up, she quietly murmurs the sacred Song of Preparation and Motivation without moving her lips, Hi ho, hi ho to provide blessing and safety to their endeavours.

As they emerge over through the tunnel Mavis greets the waiting group with terse, Ey up, and awaits Garth's leadership.
Jun 8, 2020 2:48 am
The gnoll examines the miners and deems none of them fit to work again. You haggle, probably burst heal them, and you settle on 5 alive and hale. He pays you 300gp begrudgingly but he is excited to get the mine back open so doesn't give it a further thought.

Where to? Toward the capital?
Jun 8, 2020 6:13 am
Mavis considers the lessons to be learnt from this short adventure. The main one is dwarves shouldn't drop kick giants. Drawing a mental underline under her conclusion, she looks sidelong at Garth, awaiting the foreman's decision.

Ruby ponders this proposal, her foot lightly tapping the hard ground. "Well, we already proved we can beat them. I guess they wanna be...followers? They seem knowledgeable of the area, definitely useful. Hope they aren't expecting me to teach them some of my moves though."
Jun 10, 2020 3:40 am
After the fight, the orcs drank the night away with you, and then told you about the job at the mine. You've earned their respect.
Jun 15, 2020 1:34 am
You decide to head for the capital. Two orcs are coming with you, Jutok, and Sweets. Jutok is the chatty one, while Sweets is just mean. They both seem to hope you do well and that they can ride on your coattails. They'll fight and they'll back you up, just expecting that doing so will warm them more than they'd earn staying back in the hills.

Halfway there, you see a loan traveler. He's wearing desert gear, but the way he stands looks familiar. As you approach, he moves toward you. Sweets cracks his knuckles, expecting since action.

You spend the day traveling to the hobgoblin capitol. Jutok is super annoying at first, chatting about this and that, the hobgoblin army, the terrible things he's personally done (spoken with pride, since all orcs are evil, right?). But as the orc begins to pick up Mavis' accent, rock bottom gets deeper.

Sweets seems like the nasty one. He grunts in appreciation only at the most atrocious parts of the unceasing narrative.

You refrain each other from killing them both for crimes against the universe for two reasons: one, Jutok is exaggerating their tales to impress the hobgoblins, who are renowned for their own lack of mercy, and two, Jutok is full of great information.
OOC:
Having typed that, I fell compelled to give you great information. But I'm super lazy. Consider great information inserted here.

OOC:
Lol
Mavis makes non-committal nods and grunts as she listens to their tales. Her vocabulary one of Aye?, Ooo arr? and All by thi'sen, eh lad? - all delivered in casual, uninterested tones. As they progress she scans the road ahead, as though to give the impression that an empty road is still more interesting than orcish boasts.

After some time she dismissively bursts their bragging bubble,
Aye, all reet impressive Jutok - but tha's nowt 'til tha's see'd dragon. Dragon is proper ferocious, reet nasty work is dragon. Spake up when tha's that tale to spin us.

She leaves her challenge hanging in the air like an unclaimed fart and waits for a response.

"Jutok and Sweets, we've seen a dragon, caught one even. A fierce creature it was, evil as they come, it swept from the sky and slaughtered many orcs with its breath. But it came too close and we threw a net, Sweets and I."

Sweets nods along.

"But A dragon is a strong thing, and we were swept up to the sky, holding onto the net and flapping like worms from a bird's beak. It flew up all the way to the sun, flew behind it, so hot it melted the buckles off my armor, then swooped down into the ocean. The cold depths were black as night and filled with fish as big as houses. Still we held on. Then it flapped back into the air and across the desert tearing along at the speeds of an arrow an arm length from the ground. Our boots were tore off bumping on the hard rock and still we held fast. Then it landed and Sweets sang it the sweetest lullaby and it fell asleep. So we's wrapped it up in the net and that's how we captured a dragon."

Mavis is uncertain whether this story is the truth or not.
Jun 22, 2020 1:35 pm
True or not (and let's face it - not), Mavis's dour expression cracks into the first honest chuckle she's shared with the orcs.

Oh aye? Tha's either hard or bard ah'll grant thee.

Her hobgoblin face grins from the tale; a tale so tall it should be classified as a flight hazard.

Ah'll mek note o' that, should ah ever 'ave cause to catch dragon. Jutok and Sweets, dragon netters and lullaby singers eh?
Jun 22, 2020 1:49 pm
Jutok carries on, "Oh, I can prove it. We traded the dragon for three unicorns," Sweets shakes his head sadly, "Which turned out to be a bad trade. Unicorns are devilishly tricky. Anyway, the dragon was taken to the capital. I bet you if it sees us again, it'll be angry as angry can be!" He chuckles.
Jun 22, 2020 2:51 pm
Raising sceptical eyebrows Mavis counters, Oh aye? Thee bets does tha? Five gold sez if we see dragon, it doesn't recollect thee. An' if tha can put it t' sleep, ah'll pay thee double fer sight on it. Will thee tek wager?
Jun 22, 2020 3:25 pm
Jutok and Sweets put their heads together, Jutok talking. Sweets shakes his head once, then again, finally nodding.

Jutok looks at Mavis. "It's a wager!"

Ruby is definitely okay with meeting any dragon right now underlying message or not, positive they'll be great allies. "Good plan. Anything else in this keep yard of interest? You think we need permission to access it?"
Jun 28, 2020 5:39 pm
The orcs remain cagey about the keep yard, only saying that it is the inner courtyard of the main keep of the citadel.

Over the next full day, you travel to the capital city, arriving near dusk. This former orc stronghold has been conquered by the Vermillion Reavers in the name of their empress. A massive bivouac around the city houses several armies. Drills are conducted, duels fought, and clashes between rival squads make it a tumultuous place. Still, your polymorph disguises hold and you make it to the walls without serious challenge.

Recruiters, not seeing insignia on your clothing, try their best to hire you into their mercenary companies: The Goblin Smashers, the Brave Gold, the 19th Legion, and so forth. They are adamant in the way of salesmen, offering you little in the way of pay but a share of inevitable and legendary pillage. You pass them by with ease.

At the gates to the walled city, you are stopped, joining a line of merchants and mercenaries who are trying to get into the city proper. After fifteen minutes, you are asked by a Vermilion Reaver lieutenant, "What do you dogs want going inside?" with all of the enthusiasm of something he's said two hundred times this day already.

Random shade from the guards aside, and possibly with three of you dragging kobold Ruby away, you make your way into the city. It's a dark and formidable place, with all sorts of random "crime" readily apparent, from muggings to beatings, robberies and drug use, and other crimes against the person that in other burgs would draw every hand that could hold a blade to the defense of the wronged.

But here, crime is just, not a word. It's a chaotic do what you want, but be tough about it, or you'll be the one on the wrong end.

Jutok and Sweets don't even see the atrocities committed, but instead move around as if they grew up here.

The psychic weight of what you're up against can do nothing but weigh upon you. The army outside, mobilizing for a campaign, tells you that the horrors you see that day will become commonplace if the Vermillion Reavers and their strange empress have their way. The associated mercenaries and armies will steam roll over most defenses. Maybe a unified force of the human and elven lands will repel them. But maybe not, and even if they do, for the lands caught in the advancing tide, the gods alone could save them.

Full of morbid thoughts, you arrive at the Poisoned Monkey. A vomiting simian graces the sign out front, hanging from a frayed rope, and twisting in the light breeze. Jutok leads you inside, and sure enough, is welcomed like a regular. The place isn't busy. A busboy busily moves busted tables to the back, where the bartender appears to be attempting to nail them back into service.

Any reactions you need to make before I continue my railroady monologue?
Jun 30, 2020 8:48 pm
Garth whispers under his breath.

Steady on, remember we are evil monsters, and will be dead if they catch on.
Jun 30, 2020 8:57 pm
Ruby looks...less sure now that they are inside. How does a place like this even function if all is chaos? Best not to think about it; at least the tavern isn't crowded for now.
Jul 5, 2020 2:58 am
Your given rooms in the Poisoned Monkey, and offered a place away from the rebuilding effort. Soon, you have roast goat haunches and a dish of surprisingly fluffy and flakey pastry. A mushroom broth soup is also served, that smells pungent, earthy, and savory.

Large flagons of ale are brought to accompany.

Jutok sits backwards on a chair, his back unfavorably turned to the room, but he is the junior member.

"Right. So the keep yard isn't far from here, we can go at night when the city wakes up. There should be a crowd chucking filth at the dragon. After midnight, the empress might be making a speech, this wasn't clear. You can get a good look at both, then we'll settle the bet. Agreed?"
Jul 5, 2020 4:51 am
That sounds like a plan. Maybe you will be a leader some day.
Jul 5, 2020 7:38 am
Eh-up Jutok. Who round here would likely be carryin’ poison? Ah ‘ave need of supplies.

Mavis has been carrying her poisoner’s dagger for miles, but never seen a poisonous creature to harvest poison from. She has no qualms about taking it from the scum on these streets at dagger point.

Does that make me as bad as them? Mavis asked herself. It was unusual for a dwarf to be so introspective.

Don’t talk daft. Tha’s dwarf an’ they’re scum. Just don’t get blood on shoes when tha slots em replies her dwarven heritage.
Jul 5, 2020 6:05 pm
Ruby hesitantly yet curiously takes small bites of the food, not about to let this downtime go to waste worrying when a new cuisine style is right in front of her. She doesn't say no to the ale either. "Fantastic. We're making great progress."
Jul 7, 2020 4:33 am
Hehsh will order something raw and bloody from the bar while they wait. "I will say thisss for the orcsss. they make better cooksss than... than the lassst place we sstayed."
Jul 7, 2020 4:36 am
Jutok indicates that there are poison merchants about in the area, at least lady he was here. You can stop on the way and pick your, um, particular?
Jul 7, 2020 3:15 pm
Grabbing a bite to eat, Mavis heads out the door. She looks about for a place to skulk (preferably high up) where she can watch the poison merchants and plan her heist.

Heist is a grand word, for what's essentially going to be either shoplifting, mugging or a stick up.

But first comes her stakeout....

Like a shadow in the night, Mavis invisibly creeps into a tactical position where she can see bugger all. She then creeps back down to join the others for an ale.

Qralloq says:
Random shade from the guards aside, and possibly with three of you dragging kobold Ruby away, you make your way into the city. It's a dark and formidable place, with all sorts of random "crime" readily apparent, from muggings to beatings, robberies and drug use, and other crimes against the person that in other burgs would draw every hand that could hold a blade to the defense of the wronged.

But here, crime is just, not a word. It's a chaotic do what you want, but be tough about it, or you'll be the one on the wrong end.

Hasan grinds his teeth knowing that anything thing he does would fall on deaf ears and would likely get him killed. White knuckles would be seen as he tries to contain himself from his city(town) guardly duties.

In between mugs of ale Ruby spots Mavis come back inside. She looks a little...gloomy? She probably just needs a hug, or to finish her food. Can't be positive on an empty stomach. Confident she has a proper understanding of Mavis's inner thoughts she engages in some more banter. "Get what you were after? Fair prices?"
Jul 8, 2020 6:22 am
Mavis answer Ruby's question into her mug.
Ah saw nowt interesting.

Thieves were renamed rogues in third edition, but some part of Mavis's soul couldn't help feeling embarrassed that she'd somehow let the side down.

that night at the castle keep

The noctural people of the city, orcs and hobgoblins chief among them, become more lively in full dark. Towards midnight, you make your way to the castle, and find the gates open. There is a small crowd, about a dozen, mostly those taking the time to chuck filth at the dragon you can spot within.

The huge brass, slightly larger than Panantyss, is chained to the ground. His scales are covered in mud, rotten food and much worse. Still, his posture is that of pride and quiet patience. This too shall pass.

You can buy a handful of filth for a copper, if you want to chuck. The hobgoblin guards are allowing people to step just inside the gate to throw their bundles at the beast, further in and with rocks with a bribe.

There are only a few guards at the gate, but more lounging inside. The keep courtyard is a couple hundred feet on a side, with the dragon taking up a good chunk of one side. Note guards are likely inside the inner keep gate.

There is no sign of the empress, but two workers are setting something up on top of the gate.

Mavis nudges Jutok and Sweets.

Ey up lads. Wager were whether it'd recollect thee. More if tha can put it t' sleep.

Tha gonna gawk and pay me, or show us an' get brassed?
Jul 15, 2020 6:49 pm
If you bribe the guard you can get just inside the gate.
Jul 15, 2020 8:49 pm
Hasan supresses a yawn. Why are we out so late, what is it we are trying to do? Free the dragon? But we cant get close. Coin can only get us so far based off the number of guards. And why is the dragon just sitting there. Is there something that restrains it? whats stronger then a dragon? Magic? But these don't look magical.

Man Im tired.
Jul 15, 2020 9:01 pm
OOC:
Hasan will recall that the last time they free a chained up dragon, they had determined that the chain net was magical, effectively paralyzing the creature so netted. You had to fully remove the net for it to be able to move on its own.
Jul 15, 2020 9:08 pm
We will pay to get as close as we can without a reprimand. Take careful note of where guards are, and how tough the chains on the dragon look.

I will also be keeping an eye to make sure a certain dragonborn doesn't go rogue.
Jul 15, 2020 9:25 pm
You purchase rotten melons from the filth vendor and slip a few silver to the guard, who says, "Three paces in, no farther, or its the camps for you."

You step inside and ready your ammunition. You have a few moments, to gauge the distance and to see the rare creature as well. The dragon is immobile, lying, and the glint of metal in the light provided by a few fires around it reveals that a fine chain net covers it.

Perception checks if you want to get a sense of the chains by the uneven fire light. Or describe another approach.
Jul 15, 2020 11:28 pm
Ruby does not carry any melons, finding them much too hefty. To be so close to the prisoner, it is awe inspiring regardless of their disposition. "You think that's normal metal? Could probably hack through it with a strong saw..." Ruby whispers, eyeing up the prison for any signs of weakness.

Ruby is able to get a look enough to recognize that the magic chain net is the same as the last one you saw. This one is bolted to the ground with large eye-hooks.
Jul 16, 2020 5:06 am
"Hey, it is like the last one. We can handle it then, too bad we don't have an army to back us up right now." Ruby starts brainstorming ways to buy enough time for a rescue, the trouble is a method which wouldn't invoke a horde of angry brutes.
Jul 16, 2020 6:23 am
In draconic: "Hey guard, you're as ugly as a human." Hehsh waits to see if the guard speaks draconic.

The guard doesn't react to Hehsh's words. The dragon does not react as well, but seems incapable of movement or speech.
Jul 16, 2020 2:35 pm
Mavis professional eye scans the area.

Are any of the buildings flammable, or ramshackle enough to easily collapse? How difficult would a stealthy approach be? Where would be a good place for sniping? What’s the closest overhang to drop down from? Are there buildings close enough which might have cellars under here? How is the dragon fed and watered? Are there barrels near him?

In short (and with Mavis - that’s very short), she’s thinking of going Ocean’s 4’ 3".
Jul 16, 2020 2:52 pm
Adam says:

Are any of the buildings flammable, or ramshackle enough to easily collapse?
No it's all heavy stone construction.
Adam says:

How difficult would a stealthy approach be?... What’s the closest overhang to drop down from?
Given that most of the creatures have darkvision 60' and the area is lit by torches, if you came over the wall behind the dragon (the right side wall from the gate) then you should have good access to the tail end. The head end will bring you into view of the gate guards, so the difficulty will be commensurately higher.
Adam says:

Where would be a good place for sniping?
The top of the walls would be good. They're not patrolled that you've seen.
Adam says:

Are there buildings close enough which might have cellars under here?
It's possible, but unlikely. The keep is a heavy orcish fortification, so one would expect they now about goblin sappers.
Adam says:

How is the dragon fed and watered? Are there barrels near him?
There is no sign that the dragon is fed or watered at all. There are no barrels near by.
Jul 16, 2020 6:30 pm
After looking at the surroundings Mavis focuses her attention on the dragon. She’s no arcanist, but she’s aware that magic is tricksy. She looks for any signs that what she sees might not be real. Perhaps melons can bounce off sufficiently advanced illusions.
OOC:
Rolling investigation, but 🤷‍♂️

Rolls

Investigation - (1d20+4)

(15) + 4 = 19

Jul 16, 2020 6:39 pm
Mavis doesn't see any signs that there is an illusion at play. Another group of orcs chuck a hunk of probably-excrement and it hits the dragon, splattering in a way as might be expected.
Jul 16, 2020 7:02 pm
Ruby will scan the guards for any keys. Sure would be quieter.
OOC:
Don't know if that requires another perception check, if so feel free to roll for me.

Is the place closed off during the day, or simply not as crowded?
Jul 16, 2020 7:19 pm
Ruby does not see any keys on the front guards. There is a larger group of guards inside and off to the side, but they're too far away for such examination.

You're unaware of whether the keep is closed during the day, but you haven't heard anything saying that it was closed then either.
Jul 16, 2020 8:59 pm
So. Do we immediately try and free the dragon, or do we wait a day or so and see if we can learn anything of the Empress? Maybe the secret to her power.
Jul 16, 2020 9:18 pm
Hasan Yawns,
"It may be a wiser choice to see what it looks like during the day. The troops seem to be more active at night?" he offers.
Jul 16, 2020 10:37 pm
As much as I hate to see the dragon chained up, yes...waiting may be best.
Jul 16, 2020 11:35 pm
"We could send someone to investigate during the day? Smaller crowd would be good, less guards too. Give me time to make a meal for the dragon, probably could use some energy."
Jul 16, 2020 11:54 pm
Hehsh whispers to the group. "You know... I can turn someone invisible. Maybe Mavis could sneak in and one other could go with her. do we think that two people could pry loose those chains?"
Jul 17, 2020 3:34 am
If they are the same, and they look like it. I had to use a warhammer to knock them loose. It was not quiet.

Now, that was in combat. Maybe if you had time to study them, you could do it more easily. Chains are a noisy thing to work with.

Garth takes a minute to think.

If we could tell the dragon to move a bit so the chain sounds seem to be caused by him...maybe.
Jul 17, 2020 8:16 am
"A distraction?" Hehshs mind goes to lighting fires as well. A fire inside the castle seems to be out of the question, based on Mavis's observations, but outside the castle has the air of a building-code inspectors nightmare.
Jul 17, 2020 10:37 am
Ah'm off fer rece Mavis whispers and backs away to the alleys.

She slips into the hidden places, the places where garbage is dumped, refuse her refuge. Once away from people, the dwarf climbs for a better view.

She's planning a long reconnaissance - hiding in the rubble of broken-down chimneys, climbing through roofs spaces to peek between the slates. At times like these she feels like a rat, squeezing into forgotten places.

She'll wait until there is nobody around then silently move to another position - working her way between the buildings. She can spend hours like this, days if needed. Silence and patience.
OOC:
Mavis will spend all the time she has available until she needs a long rest. She will prioritize patience and caution - just on the off-chance that she picks up a better idea of what's going on. Y'all go on without me.

Soon, the activity increases. Hundreds of hobs, orcs, and gnolls fill the area, bickering slightly. Guards clear the area, pushing the gawkers back from the gate, not sparring the truncheons. A pair of guards in black plate escort a slender hobgoblin woman in red garb head to toe, a sort of magicians robe with a high collar and complex, multiple layers.

The empress arises to the top of the gate wall. She scans the crowd with disinterest.

When she speaks, her voice is unnaturally loud, carrying clearly to everyone nearby. "My children. The time has come. We march soon. The obstacles placed before us have been destroyed. We shall not fail. Victory is within our grasp. Glory, power, and the song of death shall march with us. We leave tomorrow. Gather your weapons and armor. The Vermilion Reavers will supply the rest. Those who can fight but stay will be my slaves when I return . At dawn we march!"
Jul 30, 2020 5:55 pm
OOC:
welp. thats a thing now.
Hasan whispers to the creature that should be Garth. "Well, that kinda hinders that. So something tonight then?"
Jul 30, 2020 6:45 pm
Yes, looks like our hand is forced. Let's move away a bit so we don't draw too much attention. Then when Mavis comes back we will make a plan.
Jul 30, 2020 6:50 pm
Hehsh leans into whisper. "Is there any reassson we can't wait until the army is gone and then free the dragon? I bet that the dragon can fly fassster than the army can march. We let them leave, kill the guardsss, free the dragon in disssstresssss and fly home. Then we ssssurprise them with not one but two dragonsss wherever thisss army is heading." Hehsh is assuming his father will join the inevitable fight.
Jul 30, 2020 9:56 pm
That is a good thought. One that didn't occur to me.
If we do wait, and they take the dragon with them, or decide to kill him we are undone.
Jul 30, 2020 10:00 pm
"Do you think we should ask the Empress? in a shout-y angry way to stir up the crowd? It might aggravate them..." Ruby has to ponder this plan, not liking the situation one bit.
Jul 31, 2020 4:04 am
"If they take the dragon with them, we go with them! It will be-" Hehsh struggles to find a word that doesn't have an s in it because he's getting really tired of the involuntary hissing. "not complicated" another pause "compared to freeing the dragon here." Hehsh really misses his body. Particularly a tongue that can pronounce the letter s.
Jul 31, 2020 7:05 am
The empress’s announcement cut short Mavis’s investigation.

She returns to the others.

She’s put clock on it.

Ah’ll sneak in an’ try slot ‘er. If nowt else should cause distraction. If assassin in palace don’t pull guards away, nowt will. Should gi’ you lads an easier run.

Tha’s a sneaky urchin an’ all, Ruby. Come wi’? Or does tha want help boys?
Jul 31, 2020 3:41 pm
I think that getting the dragon free will take all of us, especially our sneaky ones.

Maybe we can quietly take out the guards and have a minute free time on the chains.

I think an assassin would just bring more guards everywhere.

I can cast silence and maybe buy us a minute to work.
Jul 31, 2020 3:51 pm
Mavis frowns. This can’t be right. The leader should be fearless.

An tha’d sit on arse as Empress guz t’ war wi’ world?
Ah’ll help thee free dragon, but after? Ah’ll not skive when hard graft is called fer.
Ah’d rether ferther raised dead lass, than one who runs from right.

It's not that I don't want to stop the Empress, I just think we have a better chance with a couple of dragons.

Mavis stares at them, as implacable as the stone of her home.

What ah want, an' what'll shore pit are two different things Ruby. An' I'll not live in 'maybe'.

We'll free dragon first if that's ruling. But ah'll not run from this evil after. Empress needs to be dead by morn, owt else is just tailings. There's job ahead and me to gi' it go.
Aug 8, 2020 1:54 pm
As you observe and plan your move, you hear confirmation from the guards of the worst, indicating that the dragon is going to be publicly sacrificed at dawn to bless the war campaign. They're excited that the blood magic from such a killing will make the army even more terrifying and unstoppable. Whatever move you make, you have less than six hours to do it.

What do you do?

Garth and Hehsh create a distraction by or outside the gates. They have magic, and magic=mayhem.
Mavis and Ruby climb down the wall. Ruby is stealthy AF too. Mavis tries thieves' tools on the locks. Failing that (which isn't unlikely) we'll be using the crowbar? Hasan covers us from the top of a wall with his sniping skills.

I guess we have to succeed on only two on the same side to be able to pull the net off.

Seeing Hehsh's lips move in confusion she tries again,
...so the brace of our association who possess an arcane disposition will precipitate disruption. I shall facilitate Hasan's escalade as I am familiar with the route. If he could assassinate ruffians who happen to surveil us, then that would be super!

Ruby and I shall covertly introduce ourselves behind the imposing Draco Aesium, and endeavor to emancipate it from its bonds.

Mavis, and Hehsh, you are right. I will give you a couple of minutes to get in position. You will here me when I start.

OK my friend. I am going to cast Spirit Guardian, ignore them, they won't hurt you, but try to stay close to them.

With cape turned hood over head, Ruby creeps with Mavis. While not as quiet, she would still consider it a good job since no one is shouting at them. This brings up the next obstacle: a wall. Ruby regrets not bringing a grappling hook, scratching her chin with a sharp claw. An idea springs forth: with her claws to keep her from slipping she scampers up the stone it in an almost animalistic, yet strangely graceful way, actively not overshooting the wall for a fun twirl in the air. No time to celebrate, she pulls out her trusty rope for Mavis to climb.

Ruby and Mavis drop slowly to the ground behind the dragon. There are two pegs, basically big screws twisted into the large block cobblestones. The chain net is padlocked into the circular top of the screw.

Mavis can attempt a Dexterity(Lockpicks) check in the first rear padlock.

Let's have Hasan perform a Perception check to for being Over Watch Man.

Sliding forwards, Mavis lies amongst the thrown and stinking detritus by the lock. She takes a quick peek, and slides the tension wrench into it. With fine fingers she probes at the pins with her #4 pick.
Binding on 1. Click out of 2. Hmm false set on 3. Click out 4. Binding on 5. Back to 1.

Rolling back into the filth, Mavis starts to slither to the next lock. She hates being in the open without cover, and moves slightly faster than is prudent.

She tries to slip the wrench in, but the lock is gummed up with rotten vegetation. Scraping it out the way, gritting her teeth, Mavis attempts to find the pins anyway.

Mavis fumbles the lock a few times, and the second one takes longer. While she eventually gets it open, she feels exposed and uncertain.

Both tail end locks have been removed. The dragon is large and a little spiky so it won't be easy (or quiet) to pull the chain net over his wings, back, neck and head. You can try to just do it, but failure will mean alerting the guards.

How do you proceed.

Slowly, very slowly, Mavis ducks down. She looks meaningfully at Ruby, then roughly where Hasan should be.

The four orcs at the guard station yell, running toward Mavis (and Ruby who remains hidden). They get most of the way to Mavis but moved to far attack this round.

The two guards at the gate turn and begin to close the gates.

At the keep a questioning shout echoes from someone stationed inside.

Your turns, in whatever order you want. Hasan can also take a free attack to start things off, since he was prepared.
Aug 18, 2020 12:05 pm
Bugger it. Mavis mutters to herself and starts to unwrap the dragon without any thought to stealth.

She tugs and jumps around the dragon, like a sailor working on rigging, trying to untangle the net as best as she can.

As she does so she shouts Eh up, yer lazy dangle 'ands! Gi' us lift, will yer? Empress will 'ave us guts on wall if us can't get great lummox untangled.

From the top of the wall, Mavis could run around to the keep, where Garth and Hehsh are headed, Ruby drenched in orc blood following. Hasan follows behind Mavis along the top of the wall.

One of the dragons lands on the top of the keep, and angles her head down, enflaming the top floor. Several hobgoblins jump out of windows, burning and falling to their deaths. The third dragon strafes the street outside the gate, flames rising high over the walls of the courtyard. Alarm bells begin to sound, and the panicking screams of the citizens grows louder.

Inside the keep, Garth and Hehsh dash inside. Ash and smoke fill the air, burnt corpses litter the stairs and main floor, where nothing has survived. Up the stairs straight ahead, you meet up with Mavis and Hasan climbing in a narrow window on the landing. The four of you look around the second floor, and see little. Small flames have consumed the tapestries, and no one remains alive.

On the third floor, you see the empress pulling herself out from under a pile of bodies. She smashes a potion vial she has just consumed, and faces you.

Mavis creeps up the stairs, sees the Empress pulling herself out from under a pile of bodies. She smashes a potion vial she has just consumed, and looks out at the windows, ducking low as if fearing another dragon assault, like the one that consumed her bodyguards and most of the furnishings of the room.
OOC:
Mavis has made it to the top of the tower just ahead of the others. If she can make another Stealth check DC 15, she can cross the room and attack from surprise.
Aug 19, 2020 3:22 pm
Long ago the deep dwarves adopted a subset of the drow silent handsign for use in the underdark. Unfortunately, nobody else in the party is familiar with drow sign, and after making incomprehensible signs to the others, Mavis creeps into the shadows and skirts the room.

Controlling her breathing, and wishing she could control the odour of rotten produce sticking to her, she moves closer... closer...

She draws her daggers and leaps from the shadows.
OOC:
If 18 hits then it's 29 points of damage. And (more importantly) I can finally say I've used the assassinate feature in a party.

Now the rest of you can roll initiative.

Mavis can act immediately, since she beats the hobgoblin leader's initiative. She is now aware of you.

sooooo... yesterday i got skipped in initiative. I just realized it it now because I was really confused about the order of events and went back to find you guys took two a whole turn without me. I'm not mad (i'm actually impressed, a pbp game went through an entire round of combat in one day), but i do feel the need to point it out so that it doesn't happen again.

I like the cinematic moment of chucking her out the window (Mavis would then use movement and bonus action dash to climb down 25’ and jump on top of her). BUT Hehsh missed the last combat and it’s a team game. Also we can’t let the dragon steal our glory.

Ruby would make a "bring it on" gesture, but she's pretty sure the empress is a bit preoccupied with the very sneaky dwarf. So she meets the empress instead, with a flying kick and some smacks from her staff.

Why do I get 20's on Initiative? It's still nice I suppose.

Empress... Takes the blows from Ruby and all of a sudden is in real trouble. Her sword comes to hand and she slashes at the two assailants with a complicated attack pattern.

OOC:
Mavis missed her chance of an attack in the first round (I needed sleep). I've added it now for 16 points of damage.
As Ruby comes sailing across the room with her kick, Mavis takes the opportunity to slide her dagger through the Empress's armour.

The melee is fierce, Mavis sees the blows bearing down on her and twists to avoid its force.
OOC:
Uncanny dodge. Half damage if she can see the attacker. I'm not sure when the extra damage was done. Does Mavis's uncanny dodge reduce the "extra damage" - I'm going to assume it does (it seems sensible for the hobgoblin to inflict the damage once it's hit).
((9+14)/2) + 12 = 23 damage

...and the Empress might not want to spend those 6 on Ruby.
Meaning Ruby takes 0 and Mavis takes 29.

Either way. Mavis is still up, attacks and crits for 24 damage.

TLDR: Mavis has had her turns - she's just standing. Mavis did a total of 40 points of damage.
OOC:
Second round (after Empress)
Snarling defiance with what could be her last breaths, Mavis slides her dagger deep into the Empress.
Gi' over, tha daft southern barmpot.

The nicely brought up Mavis did have some qualms about using the "s word", but this wasn't a time of politeness.

Epilogue

With the empress dead, her power over the hobgoblin horde is broken. Rioting takes to the streets. The generals begin squabbling, and by day break, the army breaks up into several pieces, leaving to their own distant homes. The orcs and other races similarly understand that the promise of booty has vanished, and form raiding bands, but mainly begin to raid each other.

The dragons, after you leave and they have brought down the keep, allow your group to ride them back to where your griffons were stashed. Soaring across the mountain plateau, you soon find yourself reunited with the loyal griffons from Allaya's Cove. A long flight across the desert awaits you, and within two days, you're back in the valley by the sea, circling then landing by the small town where these adventures began.

No one truly understands how close they were to disaster, to the combined evil armies marching upon their world for devastation and pillaging. Soon it all seems so far away and long ago, but not so far or so long. They are glad to have Pananthys their guardian back in their valley and continue to ply her with artisanal tribute.

With the treasures you pillaged from the orc capital, and those gifted to you by the draconic protectors of the lands by the sea, you live to tell the tale, or to seek more adventure and greater tales.

But those tales are not these.
Thank you for joining me on this adventure, and bringing it to life. I've always been fascinated by dragons, dragon riders, and even other aerial mounts. I so crafted this story to highlight dragons and to live vicariously through you as you soared across the world. I had a great time.

Mavis echoes the empress’s fall by falling on her arse. Her armour is sticky, and squelches with blood. She closes her eyes, embracing the cold as the warm blood pumps out of her tiny body, like it was the welcome chill of her mountain home.

If tha wanted to sit on arse, tha should ‘ave asked to be born skylander.
The voice of her stern father’s uncompromising voice scolds her.

Piss off da. Ah’m feckin knackered. she whispers to the ever present shade in her head. And, for Mavis, that act of personal defiance was the greatest challenge of her adventure.
