Sanguinity

Mar 28, 2020 2:18 am
After a few days rest, you left Redstone with Kaseeh, a fellow wanderer who arrived as you convalesced. Traveling cross country to the next major town, you find that you have much in common, a general curiosity for adventure chief among them.

You are in a dry desert area with lots of crags and buttes. You heard an odd noise and follow it, and come upon a woman working frantically on a numenera device along the edge of a cliff.

Spread out before you, the land dips away into a few buttes and large, deep sinkholes that dot the landscape. Big, long-winged
birds fly overhead and below.

The woman is dressed in a silver suit and lots of gear that seems conducive to desert traveling, and it’s clear that she’s experienced with the device she’s working on.

She looks up at you with equal parts hope and suspicion, though she relaxes a little when she realizes you do not look like bandits.
Mar 28, 2020 6:31 am
"Well, hello." Raezhon's intonation is ambiguous, as if she herself isn't sure if its a greeting or a question. She still manages a smile try to look non-threatening.
Mar 28, 2020 10:45 am
Kaseeh raises a curious eyebrow, more interested in the numenera than the woman. Why would she try to repair it at such a precarious spot? Unless it's necessary... maybe it's a flying device! That would be impressive.

Raezhon's greeting snaps him out of his daydreaming and he turns to see the woman's reaction.
Mar 28, 2020 5:03 pm
Not judging the woman to be a threat, Rohim simply listen to the conversation as he gazes down at the landscape spreading before, looking for any signs of possible ruins to scavenge for artefacts.

OOC:
What is the general description or dimension of the device? Somehow I pictured her working on a tablet but its probably something different
Mar 28, 2020 7:47 pm
The device looks like six plates, three stacked together on either end of a metallic pole that separates into two parts. The biggest plates on the end are about a cubit in diameter, and the pole is a good pace in length.
Mar 29, 2020 5:39 am
"We're definitely the 'assisty' sort, in fact, it's kind of what we do. How can we help?"
Mar 29, 2020 2:25 pm
She looks grateful and says, "I am a priest of a village, and I and two other priests named Tesir and Molan make long treks from our respective villages to meet here every year. We come to worship Sanguinity and offer sacrifces to keep our villages safe and prosperous."

Gesturing at the device before her, she continues, "We perform a complex ceremony using this device, the Altar of the Sanguine, allowing our god to hear us and transport us to a nearby butte, where the god lives."

"This year, when I arrived, I found the equipment of the other two priests strewn about and the altar damaged. It looks to me like they might have started the ritual without me, although I doesn’t know why they would do so, and maybe now they cannot return?"

She has mostly been able to repair the altar, but it requires additional work, and two pieces are still missing.

If you agree to help her, she will happily include you in her ritual so that you can also worship and receive Sanguinity’s blessing of safety and prosperity.
Mar 29, 2020 4:22 pm
Nim listens curiously and considers for a moment. Then having comfortably made his decision turns to the group and says "Well far be it from me to refuse a call to aid. I'm sure it can't be too difficult to repair this device. What do you all say?"
Mar 29, 2020 4:57 pm
Rohim turns toward the priest and mentions in a calm voice : "There's a series of large, three-toed footprints lead toward the device and then away and a trail of silver circles in the dirt that look like metallic drops of blood lead away from the edge of the cliff. Any idea whose those could belong to? He points in the direction of the clues so that everybody can see it.
Mar 29, 2020 8:19 pm
Raezhon turns to Kaseeh, and says in a quiet whisper, "Doesn't 'sanguine' have something to do with blood? Should we be nervous she wants to 'include us' in their ritual?"
Mar 29, 2020 8:35 pm
Aduan recognizes that there are still pieces missing from the altar and begins looking through the loose dirt and rock along the cliffs edge. After a moment he turns and asks at large, "Has anyone checked the bottom of the cliff? It may be that the other priests were dropped or pushed off the edge."

Kaseeh nods at Raezhon's comment. "Let the others fill in if they want to. I'll pass" he whispers back, before raising his voice back to normal to add "I'm no good with repairs, but I can keep an eye out while you do your thing. Sounds to me like the other two were attacked."
Mar 30, 2020 1:22 pm
"Without the missing pieces, the repair would be impossible. If you do want to help, pleas help me find the missing parts."

When shown the trail of footprints or the trail of metallic drops, she claims no knowledge. "I don't know what made those. Some local beast no doubt. Maybe it chased off Tesir and Molan!"

"No, it's not about blood. Sanguinity is what we call our multiplicity of gods, and this is just one altar where we can interact with one of them."

Looking over the cliff, Aduan can see to the bottom just fine, but doesn't see anything that might be the body of a person or any gear. Large colonies of long-winged, long-beaked birds constantly circle overhead and down below.

Just then, you hear a terrible howl, a bellowing sound that seems to make your very bones shudder. It is off to the side, further along the cliff in the direction of a copse of trees.
Mar 30, 2020 3:48 pm
OOC:
Are the trails of blood and tracks following each other or going in different directions? And those one head toward the copse of tree?

"Well, my friends, I believe our first clue is calling."

The direction to the copse of trees is further along the cliff, I.e., a third direction.

Birds often have three toes, right? Do the tracks look like they might match up with the flying beasties?

Seeing nothing at the bottom of the cliffs Aduan steps over to the others. "Those trees are a likely spot for our wayward priests. Where there's on there could be the missing parts. Won't hurt to look." Aduan glances at the Aeon Priest to see if she agrees or might even join them.
Apr 1, 2020 12:37 pm
Rodia shakes her head, "I have to stay here. Maybe they'll return. Please hurry, I'm worried they're in trouble. And thank you."
Apr 1, 2020 10:25 pm
Unsure of how to handle the situation with just Rohim responding to the howl, Kaseeh also prepares for a fight, wherever it may come from.
Apr 2, 2020 6:50 am
"Alright, let's just do this." Raezhon removes her bow from her pack, flicks her wrist, and it snaps open and locks in place. She strings it with synthcord as she walks toward the trees.
Apr 2, 2020 1:26 pm
Are you all headed to the woods and the fearsome howling?

OOC:
If nothing comes out of the woods after a bit, Kaseeh will cautiously approach to investigate the source of the howling

Nim chuckles confidently to himself as he watches Rohim prepare for the upcoming ordeal. "That's what I like about you Rohim, no nonsense, always itching for a fight. Haha!" Nim readies his sisk and turns towards the direction of the howling. " I suppose this isn't quite the time for splitting up. Will you be alright on your own here? He posits to the priest.
OOC:
I'm up for the howling beasties but if anyone thinks it's better to go investigate the third direction or etc. I'm most likely the least combat essential at the moment.

"That's what I like about you Rohim, no nonsense, always itching for a fight. Haha!"
"I try not to let fear lull me into mediocrity. And its always best not to let a unknown beast track you down while exploring." Answered Rohim with a subtle smirk.
Apr 5, 2020 3:20 pm
Having heard the terrible howl long before they see it, you follow the sound, and find in one of the area’s few copses of trees, a large, six-legged elephantine creature lying on its side. It’s clear at a glance that the creature is in terrible pain due to something lodged deep in the pad of its foot.

What do you do?
Apr 5, 2020 7:15 pm
Do I know what kind of creature it is, or can I make any educated guesses about it based on visible traits? (i.e., teeth or claws that look predatory; defensive armor, etc that looks like an non-predator? I know I'm projecting our world norms onto the 9th World, which is dubious, but drawing on what Rae does know of 9th world fauna, what is my impression?)

Raezhon is unfamiliar with this particular creature, but she can tell that it isn't rabid or predatory, merely in distress. It is armored with thick hide, and would be formidable if you had to face it.
Apr 5, 2020 7:50 pm
"It's hurt! I'm going to see what I can do to help it." Raezhon begins to move towards the creature, slowly, making soft comforting sounds and holding her hands up where it can see them. She looks over her should at her comrades. "Keep an eye out, its distress call may have alerted any predators nearby."
Apr 5, 2020 7:53 pm

I'm going to approach the beast's injured foot - very slowly and cautiously - and inspect the object.

She distracts the creature like a pro, and then yanks it out in the most direct route possible. The creature flinches, but doesn't crush her in a mad thrashing. Flexing its foot, it lumbers to its feet, then turns to face you. Bowing lightly, its mouth opens, and you hear a heavily lisped voice say, "Tang oooh."
Apr 6, 2020 12:14 am
Raezhon's eyes get as big around as dinner plates and her mouth drops. After a moment of doing that gaping fish thing, where your mouth moves but no sound comes out, she manages, "Y-you're welcome. I... I'm sorry you hurt your foot. I hope it's better now."
Apr 6, 2020 12:27 am
Kaseeh's original disappointment at the lack of a fight quickly turns to amazement, first at Raezhon's expert handling of the situation and then at the creature being able to speak. "You alright there?" he shouts at both her and the creature, trying to discern whether the wound had any silvery liquid around it like they one seen close to the altar.
Apr 6, 2020 12:33 am
The creature nods its huge head, flexes it's foot again and puts weight on it. It shudders but the weight holds. "I yam yolpren. Fren." It turns and shuffles away.

You can each take 1xp for discovery.
Apr 7, 2020 2:11 am
Raezhon bows slightly towards Yolpren, touches her hand to her chest, and says, "I am Raezhon. Friend." She smiles at Yolpren, not really knowing if that gesture is relevant, but maybe they'll associate a smile with friendly intent.
Apr 7, 2020 3:48 am
Aduan keeps watch on their backside as the others tend to the beast.
Apr 7, 2020 4:22 am
The creature limps away.

Where to next? Take the part back to Rodia, or there is the trail of droplets, or the tracks over the cliff?
Apr 7, 2020 6:17 am

You return to Rodia and she indeed recognizes the piece. She thanks you profusely and begins to expertly fasten it to the rest of her device.

OOC:
Which one is the easiest to follow i.e. not having to climb down a cliff of unknown length?
Apr 11, 2020 1:04 am

Apr 11, 2020 1:50 am
"Let's start with those" says Rohim pointing at the direction of the droplets.
Apr 11, 2020 2:49 am
Raezhon peers over the cliff edge for a moment, then adds, "Yep, I'm for droplets."
Apr 11, 2020 4:35 am
Nim, who has been unusually quiet during these last few moments mutters in agreement. "Yes the trail of droplets seems an appropriate next step." He looks around in a bit of a daze, as if his mind had been elsewhere for a little while and just came to.
Apr 11, 2020 5:52 am
"You okay?" Raezhon gives Nim an appraising look.
Apr 11, 2020 6:48 pm
Kaseeh is happy to compy and follow the droplets, but even happier to set his mind working on what they may be from. His original idea of a wounded animal seems less likely now after the group's last encounter, so his mind is mostly busy boiling up with new ideas. Could it be another creature? One of the priests in similar silver suits? Maybe it's not blood, but some kind of oil or fuel from a machine! Or something even more unusual, like someone's thoughts and memories. Might be a clue to be utilized in more unusual ways than simply following it...

His train of thought making him somewhat oblivious to Nim's peculiar situation nearby, Kaseeh kneels down and cautiously dips a finger on a droplet to bring it close to his face and -assuming it doesn't smell suspiciously- maybe even taste it with the tip of his tongue.
Apr 11, 2020 8:02 pm
It does taste like blood, even though it's silvery.

As you follow the drops and spatters away from the cliff, you notice the occasional incandescent purple and blue feather floating in the air.

These are slightly quicker on their attacks so difficulty 4 to defend against.

There's two attacking Rohim. Did you want to attack one of them?
Apr 26, 2020 1:12 am
OOC:
I'll just assume that Kaseeh attacks the gem thief.

Kaseeh leaps to Rohim's aid and slashes at the gem thief cadenta, killing it.

The other one continues to hary Rohim

Rohim needs to make a difficulty 4 Defense check or take 3 damage.

Everyone can act again. There is one badly wounded cadenta pecking at Rohim. No others have swept down to join the fray.

Apr 26, 2020 12:44 pm
Combat is over

Would Rohim like to describe the killing blow?
Apr 26, 2020 6:42 pm
The frenzied creature draw blood again on Rohim until he finally turned his attention to it. A quick step back allowed him room to wound up a powerful kick that connected with the creature beak with a sickening crunch. A buzzing sound could be as electricity filled the the air and the giant bird fell to the ground, its dead body twitching uncontrollably for a long time.
Apr 27, 2020 2:14 am
Aduan stows his rapier and scans the sky to see what the other birds are doing.
Apr 27, 2020 3:17 am
The birds are wary but clearly it was only the two that were nesting there, plus the thief.

You now have recovered a second piece of the altar.
Apr 27, 2020 11:14 am
Kaseeh looks around to get an idea of everyone's status. "Everyone up still? No major injuries I hope, those birds were some tough customers"

With that, he reaches to retrieve the altar piece from the nest.
Apr 27, 2020 12:16 pm
The altar piece, the green gem like piece of numenera, is on the ground by where Rohim moved to.
Apr 27, 2020 5:48 pm
"Is there anything else we need to find or shall we take what we have back to the Priest?" Briefly ignoring what flies above Aduan looks around to see where they might head next.
Apr 27, 2020 7:08 pm
OOC:
Was the metallic droplet related to the birds or just leading there?
Rohim walks toward the numenera piece and pick it up.

"I do not believe there is anything else to be done here" He checks his armor and clothes where the bird had attacked him, take out a little spray bottle and uses it to magically disappears the dust and blood stains then turn toward Kaseeh. "Nothing serious, i'll be fine. I suggest we bring back that piece and investigate the other tracks."
Apr 27, 2020 7:33 pm
The metallic droplets lead to the nest and stop. The droplets are from the green numenera piece that was ripped from the altar device.
Apr 27, 2020 9:53 pm
Is that all of them? The pieces, I mean." Raezhon folds up her bow and stows attaches it to her belt.
Apr 28, 2020 1:35 am
You return to Rodia. She is excited. "Oh, thank you. This is it. I can fix it. Okay, ill put this together, it will take me a little time. You can come with me when it's ready. Only... You need a sacrifice to talk to the god. Something valuable."
Apr 28, 2020 5:14 am
"You came here to talk to them, you must have brought something to sacrifice then?"

Rohim checks for the path to follow the other tracks, does it require to go down the cliff? What kind of equipment would it require?
Apr 30, 2020 9:40 pm
Rodia says, "Indeed I did. If you want to talk to the god, you'll need for own gift."

The cliff looks like you could scramble, half climb down, it isn't sheer.
Apr 30, 2020 9:50 pm
"Um, yeah, I'm kind of attached to the few things I have, so I may have to pass. I mean, I suppose I have this [she holds up the reality spike], which is probably extremely valuable...." Raezhon looks around at her companions questioningly.
Apr 30, 2020 10:51 pm
"I don't have anything of value either. In any case, I reckon we have time to follow those tracks during the repairs. Who is coming with me?"
May 1, 2020 1:23 pm
OOC:
Just to meta a little bit on your choices are, you can:
A) look for something to gift for the god; down the cliff seems like your only move that way;
B) go with Rodia without a gift;
C) just leave because it's not your problem and it's probably a trap and nobody likes Rodia anyway.
May 1, 2020 1:54 pm
OOC:
Lol, poor Rodia! Maybe she's just misunderstood, priestess of the Blood God and all...
May 1, 2020 3:06 pm
OOC:
I'm guessing 'Blood for the Blood God' is not an option and Kaseeh would probably bleed motor oil anyway. Maybe climb down the cliff to look for something?
May 2, 2020 5:16 am
OOC:
Although there is not much incentive apart from mild curiosity and a spirit of adventure yet, my vote is A.

C would be to wise and boring for an adventuring party!

I'm up for A
May 2, 2020 2:32 pm
The descent / scramble down the cliff leads you to more of a hole in the side of a cliff than an actual cavern. You find another path of metallic droplets that leads you inside. Inside the hole, the trail of drops is thicker and more regular.

The hole is square, about 3 feet by 3 feet (1 m by 1 m), and goes about 4 feet (1.2 m) deep before it opens into a dark, round room that is only slightly larger than the hole. Inside, a small metallic creature—1 foot (0.3 m) high and about half that in diameter—appears to be melting. Long streams of metal drip from it, and it almost sounds as if it’s panting. A large round plate of red metal that appears to be stuck to the creature’s side, as if it tried to use the plate to patch that part of its body together.
OOC:
I missed providing the description of a sacrifice, but it should be round and red and vaguely the size of a human head. Sanguity, the blood god, likes that sort of thing.

Rohim observes the creature a moment, trying to understand the situation or find a way to communicate before risking touching or moving it.

Attempts to communicate with the creature fail, and it doesn’t attack or even move if approached. It is touch and go, but Rohim manages to remove the red plate. The creature squirms a little and begins melting faster.
May 2, 2020 2:51 pm
Rohim looks into his tool bags and take out a few metal spikes and 3m of wire. He will check if the creature can use this metal better. If so, he will improvise a metalic bandage with the pieces and the wire.

Difficulty 6, and you made it!
Rohim's surgery, welding operation takes about an hour. Afterwards, the creature seems to have been patched so the cold center ceases to melt in the warm air, even as cooler as it is in the cave.

When you leave, it follows you, like an abstract duck.
May 2, 2020 6:53 pm
Raezhon has been silent thus far, watching as the strange scene unfolds before her. Now that the operation is a success and the tin duck is following Rohim like in that kids' story, she finally finds her words. "So... what just happened? I mean... I know what just just happened, but...." She manages to close her mouth and get her brain back online, then continues. "Who or what is this little guy and what happened to him?"
May 2, 2020 7:06 pm
The metallic being echoes, "Happened just happened him," as it waddles behind you.
May 2, 2020 8:29 pm
Rohim shrugs. "Not quite sure either way. It got hurt and must have used the altar piece to try and heal itself. I got curious if a normal metal would work better and I got carried away a bit. Anyway, it look better now, and harmless enough. Oh! It even talks! Sort of..."

Rohim strechs his sore muscles from the fighting and focusing for a moment, before heading back up with the new piece.

This may be the first time that Kaseeh showcases any intense emotion, empathizing as he does with the creature. Being a fusion of flesh and machine, he is shocked to see himself potentially in that position in the future. The sheer emotion paralyzes him so bad he never gets a chance to speak up in time against removing the red object, but afterwards he frantically digs through his stuff to find the bag of tools and spare parts he uses to take care of himself and closes in to assist Rohim in helping the metallic creature.
May 3, 2020 1:52 am
Aduan makes a sound deep in his throat that sounds as if he's befuddled by the existence of the metal creature. After a moment he just shrugs and follows the others.
May 6, 2020 9:19 am
When everyone is back at the altar, Rohim shows the metallic piece they found :"We found this, and this guy, down the cliff. Any idea what it is?

Also, you mentioned sacrifice for your god. What do you mean by sacrifice exactly? What are thoses gods? Anything useful they can do for us?"
May 6, 2020 12:16 pm
Rodia has completed the repairs and the device hums with a soft, sing-song voice, except, no that sound is coming from somewhere else.

Rodia says that Sanguinity blesses them, protects theit villages, gives them prosperity. She is very vague on the details but is ready to send you through one at a time. She doesn't know what that red metal piece is.

You feel it a call of some kind. The voice draws you to the altar. You want to go. You need to go.

You may fight off the growing anxiety with a level 3 Intellect Defense roll. (That's no reason for this roll, ignore.)

She begins the ritual. The ritual that Rodia performs requires her to hold the device with both hands and move it in a complicated pattern while uttering a few words in a tongue that is unknown to any of you. Then she clicks the two pieces together three times, and the device comes to life.
May 6, 2020 1:50 pm
She offers to send the PCs through one at a time, and then follow. Characters who agree to go will be shrouded in dazzling blue sparks and lightning and then completely disappear.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/qrfdskinelp4vt5/Rodia-Device.jpg?dl=1

You travel through the device, they arrive on the far butte, which is bare except for a floating stone structure. Beneath this structure, in a deep indent in the ground, hatchlings lie in wait. There appear to be thousands of the creatures, some still in the process of hatching, others not yet hatched.

Rodia screams, clearly shocked by what you are seeing. This isn't at all what she was expecting to see. She had implied Sanguinity would be a single creature.

In the pit with them are at least two bodies that have been stripped of flesh, and Molan, who appears to be still alive. The PCs also find Tesir who is clearly under the strange power of the brood’s telepathy. There are signs of a struggle, and it seems clear that Tesir stripped Molan of his clothes, tied his arms and legs, and tossed him into the pit to be eaten. Tesir ambushes the incoming PCs, attempting to do the same to them.

Repulsed, Kaseeh throws himself at the swarm with wide swings of his weapon.
OOC:
I'll take the book's example as Kaseeh's asset, since plain damage from a broadsword feels ineffective against a swarm: You discharge a small pulse of power into your foe. Make an immediate attack against that foe (using the same stat as the action that caused the major effect). If the attack succeeds, it deals 4 points of electrical damage.
Maybe he jumps into action so hard, his systems overload and unleash a bit of excess electricity on the swarm.

Aduan's mind attack bursts from him and the remaining larvae explode in a rain of viscera centered on him. The strange song in your mind fears and you find yourself alone on the butte, save for the three priests, one in sick, one unconscious, and the other dead and partially consumed.

Rodia has fallen to her knees in shock. When convinced to surreal she says, "Sanguinity, for years has answered us. A creature made of blobs of blood bubbles, but all along it was eggs for these tiny creatures? The psychic song, the telepathy, the teleportation. Was all of it a lie? But my god is dead, as is Molan."
May 15, 2020 7:27 pm
"Some seek gods who they learn to fear, others seek gods who the learn to love but there are still others who seek a greater power because they are bereft of hope and seek only surcease of sorrow and are left with nothing. I fear, Rodia, you may be the last of these." Adnuan tries to comfort the priestess with a hand on her shoulder.
May 15, 2020 10:30 pm
"Wow, both eloquent and depressing at the same time. I'm impressed." Raezhon gives Aduan a sideways smile as she wipes the goo from herself. "Blood gods, never trusted 'em."
May 17, 2020 1:37 pm
You each earn 2 experience points (XP) for getting the teleportation device to function, and one more for discovering the nature of the god:

Sanguinity is not at all what the priests believe it to be. Rather, the god they have been worshipping for so long is an ootheca full of eggs that have been incubating for centuries and have just now hatched. While the eggs were mostly dormant, their telepathic and teleportation powers were limited. Now that the hatchlings are free and hungry, their telepathic pull is strong enough that the creatures in the area heard their call for food and attempted to respond to it, most likely destroying the device in the process.

You may have made some long-term allies in the two surviving priests (and, consequently, among the people who live in the priests’ villages).

Upon discovering the truth of their religion, the surviving priests might forgo their faith completely, continue the charade so the people in their villages feel safe, or try to destroy all of the remaining broods so they don’t harm more people. Those who return to their villages give the characters an open invitation to stop by anytime.

This is the end of the adventure, Sanguinity.
