Note: While the rulebook indicates that Orcs and Trolls are creature of the Enemy, the Campaign Guide stipulate they are not, but where included in the rulebook for GMs who wish to be using Orcs and Trolls instead of Beastlings and Fellgrims.
I'll be using Orcs and Trolls, but not necessarily as creatures of the Enemy. They were an ancient enemies of the elves and dwarves before the coming of man, but when the 4 demon lords came, they tried subjugating the Orcs and Trolls to their will. Many resisted, either fleeing further south (to become a minor thorn in the sides of elves, dwarves, and eventually men) or dying at the hand of the Enemy, but a few yielded to the Enemy's will (a bit how Wildling did relatively recently).

So does this mean we shouldn't assume every orc and troll we meet isn't necessarily a bad guy/monster and they might be reasonable, or are they still enemies, just not always working for the demon lords?
May 6, 2020 7:34 pm
Goblinoids are still goblinoids, and those creatures oftind find raiding to be a much better way of life than trying to establish an actual civilization. Of course, there might always be rare exceptions...
This of course also means that Orcish is now an official language characters can take. It has no written form.

GM, you have stated that a week in this setting is 10 days long. I looked around and could find no source for that, not that I'm doubting you. Nor anything mentioning a Calendar or the like. So what are the names of the 10 days of the week? How many weeks are there in a month? How many months in year? Also, what time of year is it when the game starts. Lastly what place in our own world is similar to the area that Athrand is located in. I ask because the knowing details like these helps to create a deeper immersion into the game for me.
May 6, 2020 11:08 pm
The calendar is covered in 'Neath the Shadow #3, the magazine for TAoS. Nowhere are the days of the week seems to be named, though I'm sure I could come up with something, but the 12 months are as followed:
Enc-Ithron, translation: "slow moon", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of Novembre.
Nan-Denyr, translation: "long nights", 31 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of Decembre.
Daur-Ithron, translation: "bleak moon", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of January.
Elith-Erain, translation: "silver days", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of February.

Nos-Melen, translation: "rain end", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of April.
Breth-Ithron, translation: "fleet moon", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of May.
Teth-Denyr, translation: "short nights", 31 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of June.
Gad-Ithron, translation: "bright moon", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of July.
Mal-Erain, translation: "gold days", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of August.
Mal-Denyr, translation: "gold nights", 31 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of Septembre.
Nos-Heran, translation: "rain start", 30 days, roughly the equivalent of the month of Octobre.

Thank's, I could come up with the days of the week to run by you, if you would like. What about the following.

Dwarves are the worst. Wow. But I'm okay with that. I'll be the best gully dwarf that ever dwarfed a gully.
May 7, 2020 2:24 pm
Yeah, dwarves seem a bit lackluster. Not sure if I'm missing something here. Maybe their low attribute are meant to balance the fact that they have special abilities like elves but are not limited to 1 Fate Point like the elves?
May 7, 2020 7:06 pm
I have been suggested to start with humans and bounce other races off that standard if you're interested in game-balance.
May 7, 2020 8:07 pm
I'm fine with how the character turned out. I was simply surprised that dwarves were inferior to humans and elves in every stat. But they do get a couple racial goodies like night vision and infinite load.

Hope those rats don't prove to us how damaging combat can be... Add giant rats to new creatures seen..:O
May 22, 2020 7:17 pm
I doubt those rats will prove much problem, they are only 3 and I did made sure the first combat would be relatively easy for us to lean the ropes of the system. Also, giant rats are not Fearsome I creatures, so no need to add them to the list.

Ack.. They don't have huge pointy teeth and dark squinty eyes with steam coming out of there mouths. I guess not. Laura still doesn't like them...

Any character with Healing skill at all?
Since I think we lost our healer permanently, should we consider a skill retcon for another character?
Maybe I could switch 30 starting point from influence to Healing with Liroc if we got enough social skill elsewhere.

I have some social skills so if you want to respec, that might make sense. But if we end up not having a healer, that just makes injuries more exciting ;) So don't feel pressured to change up your character
Jun 23, 2020 3:31 pm
On Dreamblade's profile, it says he's been inactive for 1 month now. I wouldn't count on him coming back.
Jun 23, 2020 3:56 pm
I was in between Healing, Influence, Perception or crafting as Liroc's secondary skillset at character creation.
With the GM's permission, I could transfer skill point to Healing and "buy" a first aid kit with my leftover money.. That would make him a decent emergency medic (score 52).

Alright, I'll go ahead and advertise we have a place left, and if anyone wants to respec a bit, I have nothing against it, we're still pretty early in this game.
Jun 23, 2020 4:36 pm
@Kalajel About healing, is there any other limitation than number of first aid kit use for the numbers of tries?
@Everyone does someone have a 25% in healing to be able to provide assistance?

Alright, not entirely sure what to do here. Wulfnor replied to my announcement, expressing interest to return. I'm not sure if that's a good idea seeing I already threw him out of the game after that tantrum. Still, he did contacted me in pm earlier this week, asking my advice concerning a conflict he had in another game, which seems to shows a willingness to grow and change... I won't lie, I still have a bitter taste in my mouth from my previous interactions with the guy, but if he's willing to change, it might be worth giving him a third chance (well, second for you, third for me). So I'd like to know what are your thoughts on this. Should I give Wulfnor another shot or no?
Jun 23, 2020 6:10 pm
Oh, I did not noticed it was the same guy :x
The character niche issue he had would be resolved since all the other characters are already established.
However, there is always a risk that any other thing trigger a similar rigid behavior.
My personal would be to avoid the extra risk since all games seems to struggle with covid situation and we are already a working sized party.
Especially if he is on his third strike with you
I'm not against giving him another if you feel his triggers issues have been sidestepped already though.

I don't know if his temper has actually been resolved, but judging by his communication with me earlier this week, he seems to be willing to work on them. I can only assume that the exchange we had in PM back when I threw him out somehow reached him...
Jun 23, 2020 6:20 pm
I agree with Vagrant. If you decide to invite him back in and give him another chance, I would be okay with it but since he already didn't work out in this group once, maybe another game might be a better opportunity for a second (or third?) chance.
And we're not in desperate need of another player. We have an okay group size.

Jun 23, 2020 7:28 pm
Well, I sent him a pm politely declining his offer to rejoin the group (which I think he's not even aware this is the same game). Depending on how he reacts to that, I'll see if I took the right decision or not...

So, you had finished killing a bunch of ratmen, one got away, and after Herradine had picked up her dropped torch, her and Liroc ran ahead to avoid giving too much time for the ratmen to organize while the rest of the party was regrouping...

[ +- ] Backstory
Teraclis's early childhood was pretty sheltered, living as he did among an isolated elvish community, he only knew peace and joy. All of that changed when a traveller from the mannish settlement nearby chanced upon the community. He told the elves of a great host of beast men approaching the region, and the elves decided to rejoin the wider world and moved south to Bron Midnas.
There, for the first time, he was exposed to death. The elves, deathless themselves, were vegetarians, and owned no cattle nor did they hunt. In the city, there was cattle, there were old and sick men, there was murder, and above all, there was war.
Teraclis was so distressed at the concepts of injury, illness and death that he resolved to spend his life trying to heal the sick, hurt and dying. He learned medical arts, and when he was old enough travelled closer to the front to heal those injured in the war with a group of like-minded friends.
He had learned a little self defence in the streets of Bron Midnas and for a while that was enough. The occasional straggler he subdued with the aid of his friends. One day though, they were beset by a large force on the road, and it became quickly apparent that they were outmatched, but confiding in the fact that they were clearly only healers and would not be harmed, they didn't run away at once. That was a mistake, and when they were indeed attacked, it was too late for most of them to escape. Teraclis, as far as he knew was the only survivor.
He resolved to never be helpless again, and learned to shoot a bow. Each time he has to use it, it tears his beliefs and his love of life and healing apart, but he does not hesitate anyway.
After years on the roads, near battlefields, he started to take pay to help escort merchant caravans around, taking him further and further away from his erstwhile home, and firmly on a path of wandering adventure. It was during one such escort between Hadothron and Athrand that he met adventurers that coalesced naturally into a tightly knit group.

Toraclis can use both, and now that we're out of combat, he's going to use the skill both on liroc and cassi

Liroc has 52 in healing skill also.
And Herradine has 25, which is the minimum for a help another that give a 25% bonus.

You actually have more than I do! I had kinda tabled on the take your time rule, and planned to rely on magic more. Oh well. At least I can help you too.
Aug 5, 2020 12:46 pm
Yea, with 3 people with the skill, that means there is always one to aid no matter who is hurt.
That also means you can focus on your magic more, at least at first.
Liroc will probably not invest in any more healing skill. So you can easily overshoot him if you aim for the 75% to have 99% success rate with an helper.

While Liroc does have a fate point, I think i'll take this as an exit for this game. With the multiple delays and character changes and the little we have accomplished in 4 months, I don't really feel engaged in it anymore. Thank for running it Kalajel. I'd be interested in trying again the Age of Shadow at another opportunity.
And good luck to you all!
We can continue playing, if my remaining 4 players still want to. We still have 2 front line fighters in Herradine and Nunri, so I think we have a balanced party.
Aug 15, 2020 3:55 pm
Well, it is indeed about balancing my time better with the new job. I've had fun with this game, and i would love to see the Age of Shadow setting past the starting level at some point. I think i like the system.
Its one of the things I still struggle with in the pbp format. Spendings months of a single adventure (or scene in some cases) without being able to see the character or the story develop.

I'm good to continue and finish this sewer adventure but I think once this arc is wrapped up, I'll leave as well.
The game is well run and I'm enjoying it but I'm not a fan of the system and the game isn't really clicking with me for some reason.
Still, I want to see this sewer monster story through to the end

What would be involved in an attempt to grab the sword jutting from the side of the slug? Athletics? Deception? Riding? Unarmed combat? Close combat ?
Aug 16, 2020 9:25 pm
Athletics sounds good. Deception might allow to feint the giant slug to give a bonus to whomever grabs the sword next...

It's not my turn yet, but if I now wanted to cast a heal on Herradine as she grapples, as I'm required to touch her for that, would I be able to?
Aug 18, 2020 2:48 pm
Yes, you could, she's not too high up in the air. Also no special action required: I consider all this to be part of the innate spell casting roll...
