Adventure 1: Trouble in the Waterworks.

May 8, 2020 7:39 pm
All of you started adventuring for your own reasons: one searching more magical knowledge, one looking for demons to slay to avenge his hometown, one looking for his own place in the world, one looking to spend a fortune, and one out of wanderlust and a need to meet new people.

For one reason or another, you all found yourself at Gadagethul (or Hadothron as the elves name it), the dwarven capital in the region of Aronbor. You all took a job escorting a dwarven merchant caravan headed for Athrand, a human trade city. On this long journey of over 400 kilometres, you got to know each other better over the many long days, as you crossed the land bridge and made it to the landmass on the other side of the Sea of Shadows.

Eventually, you reached the region of Bor-Athar and the city of Athrand proper. "The Spear" as it is often called, so named because of the spear shaped spire of its great hall. Though it is a human city, the architecture borrows a lot from the elves as they helped human build this city nearly four hundred years ago. In fact, many elves reside here, as well as some of the bearded folks who seem to have made a permanent home here in Athrand.

The days passed and your funds soon dwindled. As they are starting to dry up, you decided to look up for jobs so you would not be reduced to live as beggars or marginals. This is when you heard that the guild of sewer workers were looking for some mercenary work. Something is going on in the sewers...

"It could just be rats. If so, it should be fairly easy money", Herradine comments as they are reading through the job posting. "It's not going to be a very glamorous job, though. And it could always be something else. Still, I say we just take this one. Who knows when something better will come along."
OOC:
Do we have a common language in our group that we all speak? I'm fluent in mannish and elvish and alright with dwarvish

OOC:
You're all fluent in Elvish to various extent. And I think 2 or 3 of you are fluent in Dwarvish, again to various extent.

Edit:
Liroc has 46 in Elvish.
Herradine had 50 in Elvish and 20 in Dwarvish.
Malingad has no language other than his own...
Nevyn has 45 in Elvish (correcting for having put the free 20 points in Culture instead of Language).
Nunri has 50 in Elvish, 44 in Mannish.

OOC:
Liroc has 80 in Mannish, 46 in Elvish and knows "Hello" "Damn" and "Beer please" in dwarvish :P
I don't believe reading is that common in the setting with the 80 language skill requirement
"Its better than actually working in the sewers. We should check with them for more information and negotiate a price."

"No self respecting dwarf would turn down a trip into clean dry tunnels. These are ancient sewers, right, not the current ones?"

Nunri doesn't like getting dirty, or dusty. Dirty and dusty leads to baths, blech.

Malingad swaggers up to where everyone is at, a small green pipe in his mouth burning some sort of Elven leaf, aromatic, but you sense a bit higher on the recreational scale than tobacco.

"It all seems sort of chancy. How long has the missive been up here? How many people have signed up for it and not returned? Could be more than rats,"he says. He scratches his chin as he takes a puff.

"Hmm...let's see, I got no money past a few more days, and it seems we're all about in the same foxhole...

"Looks like we found our next meal fellows. The Lords of er...what's this barrow's name?" he looks about and some old man says 'The Downs'.

"Right. The Lords of The Downs at yer service. Have steel, will travel. Well mates, I'm in if you are, I'm certainly not going in alone. What say you?" he says as he holds up his mug of dark ale and takes a drink, empties the mug and sets it on a table. He winks at the barmaid, who pretends to be offended.

He smiles, takes another puff and puts his pack on, quarterstaff in hand waiting for the rest of the crew to head out the door.

"I'll go get more information at the guild, we'll see how it goes. Are you coming or waiting here?"

Liroc head out to speak directly with a representative of the sewer worker guild. He'll get as much information as he can on the trouble, prices and other particularities of the contract.

Nunri accompanies Liroc. Her dwarven instincts may come in handy with hearing the plan first hand.

OOC:
Liroc is good at talking (51 Influence), but bad at negotiation (no trade skill). Anybody got decent Trade in the group?

"Sewer workers 'guild' eh? Can't be too picky 'bout qualifications I reckon. T'is nasty work, I'm thinkin', if the 'guild' needs mercenaries. Well...I'm not much good at anything much 'cept soldiering an' killin'. As long as the pay is good," says Malingad through his rings of smoke. He tumps the pipe on a wall as they pass through the lanes of Athrand and pockets it.

"Aye, job's a job. I'll tag along s'pose." Novyn adds, falling into line.

You make your way to the sewer worker guild's building in order to get more details about the job. The clerk greeting you takes one look at you and quickly guesses why you're here.

"I suppose you're all here for the job? You're the only one who have shown interest so far. I guess the idea of going down in the sewers does not appeal to most adventurer of mercenary types... We had two teams disappear in a section of the sewers in the past few days. We need to figure out what happened to them."
May 11, 2020 5:15 pm
"By teams, you mean workrews? or a team of men carryin' steel?

"Ahem...I mean men with weapons? Long sharp thin's," says Malingad. "And, 'ow long has each team been missin' mate?"

Malingad is becoming slightly aggravated by the thought of common men being threatened by dangerous critters beyond their ability to handle.

He knows these men live meager lives and he despises any injustice they may have to endure.

He decides to discipline himself and moves back a step, keeping silent, faithful that his friends will make the right decisions. He cares not for silver if but to clothe and feed himself, and when able, others.

Liroc answers the clerk : "Yea, working inside sewer is not glamorous, but its honest work. Whats the pay for taking the job and thow much is the reward if we find your teams?"

You have to do a bit of translation work between Malingad and the clerk who speaks Mannish. When Liroc starts asking questions, the clerk lets out a sigh of relief and answers his question.

"The guild is willing to pay you each 50 silver pieces for the job. If the men are still alive, bring them back, if not, inform us of their fate. If you want more information, go speak to Cobb over there."

He points towards an older man who looks to have lived in the sewers all his life.
May 12, 2020 12:35 am
"Sounds pretty straightforward and reasonable to me. We'll speak with him for the details, thanks."

Liroc go meet the older man. "Hello Sir, we've been told you might have more informations about the workers that disappeared lately. Like, how many went missing, how long ago and if they were armed, that sort of things. Any details you can give us would increase our chance to figure out what happened to them."
May 12, 2020 2:51 am
"Elder, I know you've not worked for a spell. I 'ope this 'elps ya get a bit of food and such as you have need, for ye family," says Malingad sternfaced, and hands the old man a few silvers.

"This is so ye can forget yer troubles a bit," and he hands Cobb a few more silver (8 in all).

"Now tell us elder, who or what's down there, and where do we start. We're caryin' steel and we ain't the kind of blokes'll run at the first sign of a rat or a critter...and we wants to 'elp you fellas out...right?"

Malingad looks directly into the man's eyes.
May 12, 2020 3:10 am
LIroc glances at Malingrad, surprised by his generosity, then shrugs slightly before proceeding to translate the elf words in Mannish.
