Adventure 1: Trouble in the Waterworks.

All of you started adventuring for your own reasons: one searching more magical knowledge, one looking for demons to slay to avenge his hometown, one looking for his own place in the world, one looking to spend a fortune, and one out of wanderlust and a need to meet new people.

For one reason or another, you all found yourself at Gadagethul (or Hadothron as the elves name it), the dwarven capital in the region of Aronbor. You all took a job escorting a dwarven merchant caravan headed for Athrand, a human trade city. On this long journey of over 400 kilometres, you got to know each other better over the many long days, as you crossed the land bridge and made it to the landmass on the other side of the Sea of Shadows.

Eventually, you reached the region of Bor-Athar and the city of Athrand proper. "The Spear" as it is often called, so named because of the spear shaped spire of its great hall. Though it is a human city, the architecture borrows a lot from the elves as they helped human build this city nearly four hundred years ago. In fact, many elves reside here, as well as some of the bearded folks who seem to have made a permanent home here in Athrand.

The days passed and your funds soon dwindled. As they are starting to dry up, you decided to look up for jobs so you would not be reduced to live as beggars or marginals. This is when you heard that the guild of sewer workers were looking for some mercenary work. Something is going on in the sewers...
May 8, 2020 7:57 pm
"It could just be rats. If so, it should be fairly easy money", Herradine comments as they are reading through the job posting. "It's not going to be a very glamorous job, though. And it could always be something else. Still, I say we just take this one. Who knows when something better will come along."
OOC:
Do we have a common language in our group that we all speak? I'm fluent in mannish and elvish and alright with dwarvish
May 8, 2020 8:08 pm
OOC:
You're all fluent in Elvish to various extent. And I think 2 or 3 of you are fluent in Dwarvish, again to various extent.

Edit:
Liroc has 46 in Elvish.
Herradine had 50 in Elvish and 20 in Dwarvish.
Malingad has no language other than his own...
Nevyn has 45 in Elvish (correcting for having put the free 20 points in Culture instead of Language).
Nunri has 50 in Elvish, 44 in Mannish.
May 8, 2020 8:08 pm
OOC:
Liroc has 80 in Mannish, 46 in Elvish and knows "Hello" "Damn" and "Beer please" in dwarvish :P
I don't believe reading is that common in the setting with the 80 language skill requirement
"Its better than actually working in the sewers. We should check with them for more information and negotiate a price."
May 8, 2020 8:19 pm
"No self respecting dwarf would turn down a trip into clean dry tunnels. These are ancient sewers, right, not the current ones?"

Nunri doesn't like getting dirty, or dusty. Dirty and dusty leads to baths, blech.
May 9, 2020 2:15 am
Malingad swaggers up to where everyone is at, a small green pipe in his mouth burning some sort of Elven leaf, aromatic, but you sense a bit higher on the recreational scale than tobacco.

"It all seems sort of chancy. How long has the missive been up here? How many people have signed up for it and not returned? Could be more than rats,"he says. He scratches his chin as he takes a puff.

"Hmm...let's see, I got no money past a few more days, and it seems we're all about in the same foxhole...

"Looks like we found our next meal fellows. The Lords of er...what's this barrow's name?" he looks about and some old man says 'The Downs'.

"Right. The Lords of The Downs at yer service. Have steel, will travel. Well mates, I'm in if you are, I'm certainly not going in alone. What say you?" he says as he holds up his mug of dark ale and takes a drink, empties the mug and sets it on a table. He winks at the barmaid, who pretends to be offended.

He smiles, takes another puff and puts his pack on, quarterstaff in hand waiting for the rest of the crew to head out the door.

"I'll go get more information at the guild, we'll see how it goes. Are you coming or waiting here?"

Liroc head out to speak directly with a representative of the sewer worker guild. He'll get as much information as he can on the trouble, prices and other particularities of the contract.
May 10, 2020 9:43 pm
Nunri accompanies Liroc. Her dwarven instincts may come in handy with hearing the plan first hand.
May 10, 2020 10:20 pm
OOC:
Liroc is good at talking (51 Influence), but bad at negotiation (no trade skill). Anybody got decent Trade in the group?
May 11, 2020 4:09 am
"Sewer workers 'guild' eh? Can't be too picky 'bout qualifications I reckon. T'is nasty work, I'm thinkin', if the 'guild' needs mercenaries. Well...I'm not much good at anything much 'cept soldiering an' killin'. As long as the pay is good," says Malingad through his rings of smoke. He tumps the pipe on a wall as they pass through the lanes of Athrand and pockets it.
May 11, 2020 6:58 am
"Aye, job's a job. I'll tag along s'pose." Novyn adds, falling into line.
May 11, 2020 2:44 pm
You make your way to the sewer worker guild's building in order to get more details about the job. The clerk greeting you takes one look at you and quickly guesses why you're here.

"I suppose you're all here for the job? You're the only one who have shown interest so far. I guess the idea of going down in the sewers does not appeal to most adventurer of mercenary types... We had two teams disappear in a section of the sewers in the past few days. We need to figure out what happened to them."
May 11, 2020 5:15 pm
"By teams, you mean workrews? or a team of men carryin' steel?

"Ahem...I mean men with weapons? Long sharp thin's," says Malingad. "And, 'ow long has each team been missin' mate?"

Malingad is becoming slightly aggravated by the thought of common men being threatened by dangerous critters beyond their ability to handle.

He knows these men live meager lives and he despises any injustice they may have to endure.

He decides to discipline himself and moves back a step, keeping silent, faithful that his friends will make the right decisions. He cares not for silver if but to clothe and feed himself, and when able, others.
May 11, 2020 5:16 pm
Liroc answers the clerk : "Yea, working inside sewer is not glamorous, but its honest work. Whats the pay for taking the job and thow much is the reward if we find your teams?"
May 11, 2020 7:46 pm
You have to do a bit of translation work between Malingad and the clerk who speaks Mannish. When Liroc starts asking questions, the clerk lets out a sigh of relief and answers his question.

"The guild is willing to pay you each 50 silver pieces for the job. If the men are still alive, bring them back, if not, inform us of their fate. If you want more information, go speak to Cobb over there."

He points towards an older man who looks to have lived in the sewers all his life.
May 12, 2020 12:35 am
"Sounds pretty straightforward and reasonable to me. We'll speak with him for the details, thanks."

Liroc go meet the older man. "Hello Sir, we've been told you might have more informations about the workers that disappeared lately. Like, how many went missing, how long ago and if they were armed, that sort of things. Any details you can give us would increase our chance to figure out what happened to them."
May 12, 2020 2:51 am
"Elder, I know you've not worked for a spell. I 'ope this 'elps ya get a bit of food and such as you have need, for ye family," says Malingad sternfaced, and hands the old man a few silvers.

"This is so ye can forget yer troubles a bit," and he hands Cobb a few more silver (8 in all).

"Now tell us elder, who or what's down there, and where do we start. We're caryin' steel and we ain't the kind of blokes'll run at the first sign of a rat or a critter...and we wants to 'elp you fellas out...right?"

Malingad looks directly into the man's eyes.
May 12, 2020 3:10 am
LIroc glances at Malingrad, surprised by his generosity, then shrugs slightly before proceeding to translate the elf words in Mannish.
May 12, 2020 3:25 am
Nunri scratches her head and leans forward. She's uncertain what elvish custom requires paying your employer, but senses that it is one based not on bribery or generosity but respect. Maybe veneration of the wisdom that comes with age? Elves are long lived and probably get very wise.
May 12, 2020 5:40 am
Herradine watches the exchange curiously as well. It is a nice gesture but not one she would be willing to afford. Money is always an issue.
Still, she won't complain about other people's generosity.
May 12, 2020 4:43 pm
Cobb is a bit surprised at the elf's generosity and then starts his story in the common tongue as best he can, every once in a while, he has to stop to think about his wording (probably with some help from the group).
OOC:
@ Malingad: you can go ahead and remove those 8 BP from your sheet if it hasn't already been done...
"Thank you sir. Well, we was wokin' that day. I was part of the team which was supposed to stay on top to let the good folks know there we was workin' dow there. So my friends went in to check some o' the grates on a small section o' the sewers, they can get clogged or even break sometimes. I know this section pretty well... Anyways, thy never came back up... After long hours o' waitin', the guild decided to send a second team, an armed one. You see, the rats below the sewers can grow big and pretty ornery, you know, so it was nothin' out of the ordinary at the time, the first team might have just gotten hurt or seomthin'. So the armed men go in, then sometime later, we hear yellin' and screamin' comin' from down there. Only one man came out, looking scared and all wide-eyed, as it The Enemy itself were after him. Had a wicked wound on the side o' his face too. He ran away he did, and never came back. Just spends his day drownin' his sorrows in beer now..."
May 12, 2020 6:07 pm
"We'll ned to find out who that man is and question 'im. Unless you wants to just head down into the sewer. Then we need to know what section to start at," he says to Liroc.

"Who was man, and where we find him? We buy him a drink or two, hear the tale from his lips."

Nunri hopes her mannish holds up to convey her meaning.
May 12, 2020 7:25 pm
"Durwin. He's drowning himself in ale at the Matted Mare. Can't miss him, he has this large scar on the right side of his face now." Cobb replies.
May 12, 2020 9:00 pm
"And how long ago did this happen?"
May 12, 2020 10:51 pm
"Five days ago. None o' the other workers really want to go back down in that section if there's trouble to be had down there... Me I'd very much get to the bottom o' this..."

Herradine nods at Nunri to let her know her mannish is fine.

After Cobb finishes, she says: "Then it sounds like we know where to go next."
May 13, 2020 11:52 am
"Can we see the map of the sewers?" Nunri knows that the first thing any respecting dwarf would do would be to build a scene model or diorama of the structure, but even a paper or woven map would really help visualize the area.

Nice call on the map!👍
May 13, 2020 4:58 pm
As you ask for a plan, Cobb stares at the handful of silver pieces given to him by Malingad. His head then pops up, a toothy smile on his face.

"Yes, a map, I'll be right back!"

Cobb then goest talk to the clerk and disappears behind the desk for what seems to be several long minutes. He comes back handing you a freshly ink-stained parchment on which he seems to have drew a map of this section of the sewer he knows so well, still smiling, happy he could have been of service...

Cassi stands aside with her hunting dog Coring. She been rather quiet taking in the job. She was much happy with the last job no doubt being a trader herself. She just puts her two cents in, Lets hope this is a fast job.

Malingad looks at the map and smiles. He pats Cobb on the back. "Man-maenas mellohn," he says. And hands the map over to Liroc.
May 14, 2020 1:55 am
Watches the map transfer with little interest. Appears she is more anxious for action. Then again she isn't to stay in one place often. So we shouldn't have too much trouble down there.
May 14, 2020 2:54 am
"Let's hope not. We've gotta find Durwin. Once we get his story we'll be more prepared for a scrap. Let's off to the Matted Mare," says Malingad.
May 14, 2020 3:03 am
Nunri examines the map quickly and nods gratefully at Cobb.
May 14, 2020 3:14 am
Liroc thanks Cobbs and make sure they take note of the closest entrance and part of the map where it happened. He goes back to the clerk "Yea, we'll take the contract then follow the group out toward the Matted Mare.
May 14, 2020 4:48 am
Cassi says as she too follows, To be sure. Were in. Coring is always at her side and moves her.
May 14, 2020 5:07 am
"We don't have much to go on yet before we talk to this Durwin but it looks like we'll take the job either way," Herradine shrugs.
May 14, 2020 11:54 am
Nunri gives Cobb a wide smile as she leaves with the others.
May 14, 2020 4:12 pm
You make your way to the Matted Mare. Entering the establishment, you look around at the patrons and quickly spot a despondent man with a thousand yard stare who's slowly drinking a pint of beer. A large scar which looks like its currently healing runs along the right side of his face.
May 14, 2020 6:24 pm
Malingad looks at Liroc and nods slightly. He then opens his spatial awareness to include the patrons. He doesn't want any trouble, but a little bit of liquid courage might entice some to get beligerent.
May 14, 2020 7:25 pm
Cassi who isn't known to be the most civilized but rather direct, points to the guy. Is that him. Coring pops up to her side.
May 14, 2020 8:05 pm
The innkeeper approaches you as he notices Cassi's dog. "I'm sorry, but animals stay outside." pointing at your shepherd. "Aside from that, you are all welcome to come in."
May 14, 2020 8:10 pm
Cassi whistles to Coring and points to the door, You need to be out for a while. Coring looks up to Cassi before turning to leave the building. You can almost sense a connect between the two. Looking back to the innkeeper, That do you fine. Will like something later for him.
May 14, 2020 9:58 pm
"Aye. I can get him a bowl of water, and I can see if I don't have some big ol' bones laying 'round in the back..."
May 14, 2020 10:09 pm
"Thank you sir, i'll take two buck of your ale please." Liroc wait for the ales then head to the table of the scarred man. He addresses to man in a calm and friendly tone :"Hello sir, mind if I sit here? I'd like to offer you an ale in exchange for a story."

He turns to ignore you. If you remain seated at his table, he will get up and sit down at another empty table, taking his own flagon and jug of beer along with him.

Malingad speaks to Durwin.
"Listen man, we've just spoken to Cobb. He gave us this map, in his own hand, and we're going down to find those who're missing. I know you've been through a lot, but I think you would've like to know what you were about to get into if you could've. We're just askin' for a fair shake at it and we'd appreciate it if you could tell us what happened down there...it's up to you man, we'll leave y' be, either way."
Malingad waits to see if he wants to tell us something.
May 15, 2020 1:35 am
"So you're going down there are ye? Hmm, your funeral... Better you than me, I suppose..." and with this he returns to his beer and ignoring you...
May 15, 2020 2:20 am
"Mate, I know you've not worked since that day and winter is comin'. I think you'd like to get back to work and earn a livin' instead of drinkin' yerself blind. If you've any humanity in ya' at least give us a hint..."
May 15, 2020 6:30 am
Herradine, who has stayed back a bit as everyone else made their approach, now follows them. "Come on, leave the guy alone. He's clearly a coward who has given up on life because of a little scar. He's of no use to anyone anymore."

To the man she says, "We're going down there to find your missing crews. If we survive, will come back and let you know. Maybe we'll have matching scars. We don't know what we are facing, but maybe we'll get lucky. Enjoy your beer."

She gets up, and shoos the others away. They have the map, arms and armor, and know there is something dangerous. That's more than the crews had. It might be enough.
May 15, 2020 3:21 pm
Malingad has seen this kind of shock in men and women who've been through it. He doesn't blame Durwin. He knows that 'more is better' when it comes to intel and prep, but every plan falls apart when faced with the enemy. So he watches and waits for the command. It's what soldiers do...
May 15, 2020 3:58 pm
Cassi flows with crowd and chooses not to bother the man further. She looks for a nearby table to occupy.
May 15, 2020 5:22 pm
The innkeeper comes with a large bone out from the back, probably to give Coring, when he spots some of you bothering Durwin. He points the bone ad you and says "Hey, you're welcome to come eat and drink here, but no bothering the other patrons. I'm not running this sort of establishment. If yer lookin' fer trouble, go drink at The Dive by the docks..." motioning the door with his bone on that last part.
May 15, 2020 5:30 pm
Herradine lifts her hands to indicate that she means no trouble. She walks over to the innkeeper and sits by the counter. "Not my intention to bother anyone. I'll have an ale, though."
When she gets it, she pays for the drink and gives a small tip as well. "I'm new in town. Anything I need to know about this place? Dangers, jobs, places to visit and to avoid?"
May 15, 2020 5:48 pm
The innkeeper nods his head, "Right away miss.", as he goes give the bone to Coring waiting outside. He then heads back in and hands you a flagon of ale for half a silver.

"New in town eh? Well the marketplace is always worth visiting, so does the great hall, it's spire is a thing of beauty. As for danger, the town itself is pretty safe, being so far removed from the North as we are... Still, I'd suggest you avoid the docks: with all this time spent at sea without a woman, some of those sailors can get a bit... insistent if you catch my drift... As for jobs, well this being a trade town, merchants are always looking for people to man their caravans, especially guards since banditry seems to have become more common as of late... Those caravans either head west to trade with the bearded folks, or further inland, east, then north or south to trade with men and elves... Then of course, the brothels near the docks are always looking for fresh new pretty faces... if you're ever inclined to this sort of work..."
May 15, 2020 8:05 pm
Liroc leave one beer to the man and joins the others at another table. "I don't reckon he'd have much sensible to say anyway, I suggest we head down ourselves quickly, no use in wasting to much time. The chances look slim but it is possible some may still be alive."
May 15, 2020 8:11 pm
Herradine listens, making mental notes of all the suggestions.
When the man finishes, she laughs and says: "That last one's not quite my style but thanks. Guarding caravans is more up my alley. Or slaying monsters. Are there any of those around town?"
May 15, 2020 8:18 pm
"Monsters besides overly ambitious sailors, she means."

Nunri feels very undwarven without an ale as she sits beside Herradine. She slides two coin to the keep. "Ale, and the rest to keep our friend wet."
May 15, 2020 9:45 pm
"I'll just wait for ye lasses to get your libation, I'm not the drinkin' type miself. Liroc's got right. We should go afore thin's get worse. Sittin' 'round here's getting us nowhere but addled..." he says.

He pulls out his pipe and lights another pinch of the elf leaf, weaving a few clever smoke rings...
May 15, 2020 9:48 pm
"Aye."
OOC:
Those who spend money can modify their BV on their character sheets.
The innkeeper returns with your flagon of ale and serves a few to Durwin on the other table. "Monsters nearby hmm? Well, luckily, being so far south, we don't have to worry about beastlings and fellgrims. There's the occasional greenskins, always up for trouble that sort, but they seem rather few and far between... Then you have the small rodent people, ratmen or ratkin, but they tend to keep to ruins and abandoned tunnels, which thankfully there are none of nearby. No, I'm afraid that if you go adventuring out of town, the monsters you're mostly likely to encounter will be of the human kind..."
May 15, 2020 9:56 pm
"Right," Herradine replies, thinking about the innkeeper's answer. "Abandoned tunnels, you say? You think those rat people might creep into sewers maybe? Those are kind of like tunnels..."
She's not looking in Durwin's direction and she tries to make it sound like casual chitchat so he doesn't make the connection. But this sounds like it could be a clue as to what they might have to face.
May 15, 2020 10:48 pm
Cassi listens on. News of the sailors isn't a surprise to her. Been there. Done that. But the news of the rat people does catch her attention as she listens on. She is such a good listener.
May 15, 2020 10:52 pm
"I s'pose so... They're very much like rats y'know. If they can fit their heads somewhere, they can fit their whole bodies. If one of the grates was loose or damaged, I s'pose they could crawl in that way from the outside."
May 15, 2020 10:58 pm
Cassi gets a mug and perhaps something fast to eat while she is listening.
OOC:
How many BV is that for accounting. Mug is probably cheap beer and food is some kind of meat to chew on. That is besides the bone for Coring.
May 15, 2020 11:46 pm
OOC:
Let's say that drink + food + bone for dog comes up to 2 silver pieces/BV.
May 15, 2020 11:46 pm
"Mmm, ratmen would make sense in this situation. Not the most impressive foe but they would be deadly with numbers and darkness on their side. I only have a few torches with me, we might want to borrow some lantern from the guild before going down."
May 16, 2020 12:09 am
OOC:
Cassi can't see in the dark either. She does have 4 candles, Hooded Lantern, 5 oils, and 4 torches....
May 16, 2020 12:52 am
"A little light goes a long way with my kind. "
May 16, 2020 1:51 am
"Lamps are easier to deal with. Torches are good as a secondary light source and weapon. Both'd be a boon in a darkness, so's knowing when to run away..." he says as he takes another puff of his pipe.
May 16, 2020 2:14 am
Cassi pipes up as she drinks from her mug and chows done on some meat, I have quite a few lights sources with me. I can last a day or so at best with them. Something longer is going to takes some magics or lots of oil.
May 16, 2020 2:28 am
"That should be good enough to get us started, if it stretches into a longer investigation we can always come resupply. I suspect we can find the battle site and some answers pretty quickly. And I see no point wasting time either, if we have the gears we need, is everybody ready to go right away?"
May 16, 2020 2:43 am
She smiles, As soon as I finish this drink... obviously she doesn't waste anything. You all know she is good with her bow, but not too much is know about her besides she is a trader and an experienced one. Appears to be down on her luck.
May 16, 2020 4:08 am
Nunri slams her ale back wipes her mouth with the back of her hand, and clanks the tankard down. "We be good to go."
May 16, 2020 5:31 am
Herradine hands the innkeeper another silver piece for his help. When her group decides to head out immediately, she nods but still continues her ale at the same pace as before. Two minutes sooner or later won't make a difference.
May 16, 2020 7:38 pm
You head back to the sewer worker's guild in order to find out where the maintenance entrance of this particular section of the sewers is located, and once you have this piece of information, you are ready to begin your job proper.
May 16, 2020 7:57 pm
We match the info with the map and head out to the sewer entrance.
OOC:
Marching Order...? Weapons drawn? Spells ready? Light bearer?
May 16, 2020 8:03 pm

Liroc can open the march with heavy shield and a torch. Its probably the safest approach.
Having a second light source as insurance behind the frontline could be good too

Cassi gets out her lantern and fires it. Then takes a moment to open the leathers for her bow and strings it. Notches an arrow while keeping hold of the lantern. Lets get moving. Coring moves at her side.

Malingad readies his hatchets...and follows Cassi.
May 17, 2020 1:24 am
You light your torch and lantern and make your way down the spiral staircase. Eventually, you reach the sewer systems. The tiles are covered in patched os slime and mold here and there and murky water runs runs in a central canal. The sewers are not as dark as you expected thank to light shining through grates at street level.

On the walls are sconces to put up lit torches in, and you notice burnt out torches in the sconces on the walls of the passage leading north.

Fog of War map. I've taken into account Malingad's and Nunri's Night Sight, humans will see only the 3m radius around the torch and lantern (with each square being 2 meters).

You can all make a Perception check at that point.

While we wait for Dreamblade, Cassi will have managed to detect through the stench of the sewer the faint smell of burnt wood which seems to be coming from the north passage. She will also hear some splashing which seems to be coming from the western eastern passage. Coring will be looking west east, growling, his hackles raised.

Just so it's clear. I have two hatchets drawn.

May 19, 2020 6:03 am
"Should we all go together or does it make sense to send a scout ahead?"
May 19, 2020 6:16 am
"They seem to be close, I think its safer to move together." Liroc whispers back.

"Care to tell me which way to go Nunri? I can't see shit in here."
May 20, 2020 12:50 am

Nunri allows her enhanced vision to guide her, hands choked up on the hammer for control. She moves east toward the splashing nose.

Battle Map
(go ahead and place your counters, you should be in or around the red dotted circle, with Nunri leading Liroc, so both of them should be in the lead-ish position.)

A square is 2 meters.

Conditions: Thanks to light shining in from the streets above through various grates, this section of the sewers is in Partial Darkness (-25% to vision-based Perception tests). Liroc and Cassi are carrying the party's sources of light, illuminating the sewers in a 3 meters radius for human characters. Malingad and Nunri both treat Partial Darkness as Illuminated (see rulebook p.56).

Cassi wanted to shoot at the rats, this mean she'll have taken a move action to set down her lantern on the ground, and another move action to load her bow (which I'll assume was already drawn). She'll be able to shoot next round, I'll keep her rolls in mind for her attack, Liroc is up next.
May 21, 2020 10:09 pm
Liroc will take a step forward to be the first target and delay his actions to after the rats moved.
May 21, 2020 10:51 pm
OOC:
I'll wait for everyone to place their counters on the battle map before continuing the combat order...
May 22, 2020 5:12 pm
OOC:
Hmm, there doesn't seem to be any rules for waiting/delaying an action... Unless I'm missing something? Well, given the nature of the initiative system, I think I'll handle this in a manner similar to how it is done in Dungeonslayers (until such time as we find the actual rule if there's any): Each round of waiting temporarily increases your initiative by +2 (Max. +10) so long as you don't act or move more than 2 meters, you can act at any point after having declared you waited, resetting your initiative to its original score when you do finally act or move 3 or more meters.
Coring is up next!
May 22, 2020 5:17 pm
Coring is at Cassi side and not moving. Just growling at the rats.
May 22, 2020 5:48 pm
Well, speaking of giant rats, they'll move in and attack your front line. Liroc can take a swing (with his torch?) at his rat before it gets an attack. I'll roll the attacks on Nunri and Herradine.

So far, both rats miss!

Rolls

First giant rat on Nunri (46%, 1d6) - (1d100, 1d6)

Oof... a Fumble... Nunri tries to swing the rat with her mighty hammer, only to have it slip from her slippery hands (that'll teach you to wade waist-deep in sewage water!). The hammer flies from her hands and lands with a loud clang some distance behind her intended target. Nunri now faces an ornery giant rat unarmed...

Liroc's shield bash then hits the rat, the rat will attempt to dodge...

The rat takes 4 points of damage and a Major Wound! With it's Resilience reduced to 0, it will automatically fall unconscious!
OOC:
I'm going to re-roll that Major Wound, that result doesn't make any sense for a shield bash... Also, I'm not sure why it posted it twice...

This shield bash missed, and Coring still heels, so it's the giant rats' turn. they'll remain on their original targets, so that's one on Nunri and one on Herradine.

Malingad closes in on the giant rat, attacking like a madman. While his hatchet misses, it was enough to distract the rat for his dagger to find its mark, solidly at that! This rat too suffers a Major Wound (heart stops in shock!, auto-failing its Resilience check) and falling unconscious.

This meant that Nunri would be left stabbing the rat in front of Herradine. The bad news is the rat dodges Nunri's dagger, the good news is that this rat has used up its Reaction for the round!

Nunri collects her hammer, wiping the sewer stuff off on a dead rat, but that leaves it more hairy than clean. She pulls out a spare shirt and wipes the handle down, then the head. She tosses the shirt against the wall. It sticks.

Cassi says I think others went north... This eastern passage might lead to nothing.
May 27, 2020 2:32 am
Malingad looks at Cassi after picking up his hatchet and cleaning it off.
"I agree with you Cassi, and yet if we don't clear out this eastern passage, we might be leaving our backsides open from this direction. Unless you can guarantee that, we've gotta dot the "i"s and cross the "t"s so to speak - execute the plan without changin' it midstride," he nods and follows the party, taking his post at the rear, hatchets at the ready.
May 27, 2020 2:45 am
Cassi puts her thoughts forward, Consider the rats were here. I suspect nothing would follow us going north. Going east just takes away from what we want to do.

"Are you ok Herradine? That looked like a nasty bite."
Herradine leans on her spear and bends down to look at the wound on her leg. In the heat of the battle, she didn't consider it much but now that the fight is over, it looks and feels a lot worse than she initially thought. "That is a nasty bite. I'll be alright, I can still walk, but do you have some bandages by any chance? I would prefer to not get this infected."

May 27, 2020 11:46 pm
"I believe Novyn who stayed up is the one with the bandages."
May 28, 2020 4:52 am
Herradine takes out her waterskin and washes the wound out a bit. Then she drips off some cloth from her broken pant leg and wraps it around the wound. It doesn't look like a very good bandage but maybe it's better than nothing. "I'll be alright. Let's just get going."

Regrouped, you make your way further down the eastern passage, eventually, you reach what seems to be a large collection bassin with a huge drain. The water is lazily draining down the drain, indicating that whatever is located beneath this room must be reaching capacity. The source of the splashing become soon apparent as you notice another 6 giant rats in the brackish water. As soon as they notice you, they hiss and make their way towards you, just like the last ones did...

Once again, we have quadruple equality for initiative, so I'll ask those at 13 to please roll a d10 to break ties. While I wait for your rolls, I'll prepare the combat map.
To speed things up, I think I'll also try the following house rule: If a tie-breaker roll still result in a tie, I'll give priority to PCs over NPCs/monsters.

Edit: Oh, I almost forgot, after last fight, I noticed some combat modifiers listed on p.31, including combat penalties for partial darkness and darkness which were not listed on p.56 (total darkness combat penalties are still listed on that page) for some odd reason... I'll try to remember those modifiers, and also remember that if you're attacking an enemy which isn't in an illuminated/brightly illuminated area, you'll suffer a -25% penalty (for partial darkness), or a -50% penalty (for dark).

Combat Map

Please place your counters on the map. You should be in or around the red dotted circle.

On an unrelated note, I found out I could put a picture as background, which means it cannot be accidentally selected and moved or re-sized. Go ahead and try selecting the sewer battle map, you can't. This should make combat more practical. Wish I had known that during my Pathfinder/Ravenloft game...

Conditions: Thanks to light shining in from the streets above through various grates, this section of the sewers is in Partial Darkness (-25% to vision-based Perception tests, -25% to attack rolls). Liroc and Cassi are carrying the party's sources of light, illuminating the sewers in a 3 meters radius for human characters. Malingad and Nunri both treat Partial Darkness as Illuminated (see rulebook p.31 and p.56).

Cassi and Coring are up!
May 30, 2020 4:42 pm
Placed them both. Coring is at Cassi's Side and Cassi set down the lantern and fired an arrow at the closest rat that she can see. That would probably be -25 shot as she isn't keen on shooting into -50 darkness.

Im guessing the pet will stay at Cassi's side again as she gets ready to fire. So Liroc is next.
Liroc will hang his torch on the scone right beside him and draw his sword for the fight.

Alright, so Cassi takes a move action to put her lantern down and another move cation to notch an arrow. Coring probably remains at Cassi's side. And Liroc takes his turn putting his torch on a sconce on the wall and drawing his weapon... So that takes us to Malingad.

Speaking of which, it's the giant rats' turn. Two giant rats will take the place of their fallen kin, which means your front-line fighters will be attacked by 1 rat each.

I agree, if there is no sign of anything else than rats here, we should move on. Should we get up for some decent bandages before we explore the northern tunnels?"

Jun 7, 2020 5:38 pm
You make your way further down the sewers. Here, the sewer is darker as there are few grates (considered dark, p.31 and p.56), the passages are also narrower (the walkways are about 25 cm/ 9 and 7/8 in. wide) and the ceiling domes lower (meaning that any use of two-handed weapons, even bows, is done at -25% as you lack the space to effectively wield them). You eventually reach an intersection. Some distance away, you notice some faint lighting from collection pipes further away. You can continue north, turn east, or west (or you can always turn around...). Coring starts growling again, but does not seem to be pointing towards any direction in particular...

Jun 8, 2020 3:24 pm
You continue to the passage to your right until you reach something which could be interesting... With the light sources so far behind Malingad, he can just make up some stairs which climbs up out of the muck and into dry sections of the sewer to form an intersection. The stairs of the south passage have traces of blood on them...
Jun 8, 2020 6:04 pm
Malingad holds a finger up to signal 'quiet'. He sneaks over to Liroc and whispers, "There be blood on the stairs," and points to the southern stairwell. "Whatcha want to do next?"

"But careful. Whatever caused those bloodstains might still be around."
Jun 8, 2020 8:50 pm
As you progress further down the passage, you notice a definite trail of dried blood. Someone or something wounded has been through here in the past few days. Continuing down into the room, you eventually come upon the sourde of this blood. A humanoid body is sprawled on the ground between the two upper columns, near the center of the room. It seems to be wearing the uniform of a sewer worker. His body has been nibbled and partially eaten, coupled with its state of decomposition, making it difficult to determine what was the cause of death at a cursory glance...
Jun 8, 2020 9:11 pm
"This could be some sort of trap. We don't know what kind of creature we're dealing with here but it might be more intelligent than rats."
Jun 9, 2020 1:47 am
Liroc is not much of an investigator himself, but he knows the importance of relevant information. He will focus on one thing he is good at : Getting ready to receive the ennemy. He will either protect the first person to go investigate or watch the rear, whichever seems more necessary with how the rest of the group moves.
Jun 9, 2020 4:11 am
Malingad sheaths his hatchets, then unbinds the staff from his pack and uses it to move and search the body for clues....
Jun 9, 2020 3:15 pm
Malingad starts poking and prodding the body with his staff. Eventually he manages to slide the staff under the body in order to flip it over. As he does so, he notice what looks like a broken stick sticking out from the corpse's rib cage... Reminding him of a broken arrow shaft, albeit, a primitive-looking one...
Jun 9, 2020 6:08 pm
Herradine moves in closer to protect Malingad if anyone suddenly decides to jump out at him as he does that.
Jun 9, 2020 6:34 pm

No problem. Oh, I forgot, Giant spiders are Fearsome I creatures, which means Malingad has a Persistend test at +25% to make as he's the only one who can currently see it (there is only one spider in the room). You can take some time to prepare yourself before initiating the fight, but currently, because of where the spider is located and the difference in height between the room and the passage, only Malingad has a clear shot on it. Anyone else will at the very least be required to move to the room's entrance... which might cause the giant spider to spring its ambush... I'll leave you some time to think about your strategies.

Once again, the arrow seems to damage the spider which hisses in pain, but the arrow does not seem to penetrate as deep as you'd expect because of its thick chitin...

Okay, so Cassi is shaken at the sight of the giant spider, taking a -25% to all her tests for 20 - her POW in rounds. So yeah, this ranged attack was really a miss...
The giant spider will attempt to dodge Liroc's attack. It fails. Liroc's weapon bite deeps into the giant spider's flesh, feeling some resistance from the chitin, splattering him in ichor as the beast shriek in pain. The giant spider will also auto-fail its Resilience check and suffer a Major Wound. The giant spider falls unconscious, its right leg(s) muscle badly cut/mangled or leg bone shattered. Did you factor in the -25% from the shield?

Are dodge allowed on arrow? I thought they were only for thrown and melee.
Grunting from the pain of the arrow that pierces his armor,Narrowly dodging an arrow aimed for his sword arm, Liroc lead the charge up the north tunnel. Alright, it's been a couple of days, we'll say that Malingad is waiting for now. I assume Coring heels, so we'd be up to Herradine's turn.

Herradine moves down the corridor behind Liroc, holding the torch to illuminate the area where the fight is taking place. With one hand occupied, she can't really use her spear, so she stays behind Liroc and doesn't attack.
Jul 11, 2020 8:45 pm
With the light source moving, you can see some stairs leading up from the cramped passage (similar to those on the roms with the corpse and the giant spider) which seems to lead into an area where you'll be able to fight two-handed with no penalties... Still no sight of your attackers though... Nunri is up next.

Liroc and Herradine (and Malingad while we're at it) all advance. You find yourself in an area where the ceiling is higher and as such would not be hindered by fighting two-handed. As you make it near a corner, Where your mysterious assailants were most likely shooting from, you nitice a large alcove to your left and a large corridor to your right which looks to open into a large room. The corridor you're in plunges into darkness a shot distance after this intersection. Around a corner, you see two small rat-like humanoids who squeak in surprise to see you so soon...

The rat will use his reaction against either Herradine or Liroc to at least dodge one attack. That's a critical dodge against Liroc. Not only does the rat deftly manages to avoid Liroc's sword stroke, but it made Liroc overreach a bit, unbalancing him. That will be a -25 penalty on Liroc's next action. However, Herradine's hit skewers the ratman in one hit, making it drop like a sac of potato!

Well, the ratman that fled went north, so if you want to go after him, you could go north as well... Or you could always explore that big room you are in...
Jul 25, 2020 9:34 am
OOC:
Liro want to move north as quickly as possible to give little time for the ratmen to prepare an ambush. So that would be double move as a group with the lights. Liroc leading with his shield to intercept arrow and provide cover for the rest of the team.
Jul 25, 2020 2:34 pm
Here's what you've explored of the sewer so far if it can help those who are more visually inclined. You are at the northern intersection with the big alcove and where part of a bigger room has been uncovered. The ratman fled up the north passage.
OOC:
On an unrelated note, I've noticed some Zs next to Umbral's username which indicate inactivity on the site fo a long while (and is never a good sign). So I'll have Malingad stay behind to make sure nothing catches you from behind, and probably make another announcement on the tavern section that I have now two spot open for that game...
Jul 25, 2020 2:40 pm
OOC:
Thanx a ton for the map. It does me well.
Cassi and Coring will move with Liroc to provide light to pursue the escaping ratman. Not good if one gets away.
Jul 25, 2020 2:47 pm
Herradine also follows Liroc north. Making sure the rat doesn't alert others seems like it should be high on the list of priorities.

With both of the lightbearers going off in pursuit, Maling-... Toraclis follows too.

Nunri also follows, making sure everyone is together, and bringing up the rear.
Jul 29, 2020 2:50 pm
Cassi and Coring work to keep up.
Jul 29, 2020 4:30 pm
The party arrives into what looked to have been some sort of living quarters. You notice a few recently put out torches on the wall sconces and several hides and hammocks hung about, giving you a hint of their numbers, which is more than you've encountered so far... You hear activity coming from the darkness of the western passage...

(I advanced your characters, well everyone aside Nunri who had moved, until you could get a good view of the room. You probably have another 6 or 7 meters left on your moves if you want to.)

You enter in what seems to be another common area, Again, with some extinguished torches on the sconces on the wall. This one is larger than the last room, but with fewer furs arranged on the floor. Aside from the ratman that got away, you see a larger ratman (but still small) training a shortbow on you. There seems to be three other ratmen, that you can only describe as ratwomen, swinging crude slings over their head.

They will all attempt an interrupt action on you as you enter the room, so you can also roll your action (if you had any you could do) as a comparative check to see if you can act before their interrupt. Of course, if you have no action left, you can use your reaction instead.

So, the interrupt actions will be as followed:

• 1 ratwoman shooting her sling at Cassi.
• 1 ratwoman and the larger ratman shooting at Liroc.
• 1 ratwoman and the ratman who had ran away shooting at Herradine.

Rolls

Ratwoman sling interrupt on Cassi (55%, 1d6-1) - (1d100, 1d6-1)

1d100 : (1) = 1

1d6-1 : (6) - 1 = 5

Ratwoman sling interrupt on Liroc (55% -25% = 30%, 1d6-1) - (1d100, 1d6-1)

1d100 : (29) = 29

1d6-1 : (5) - 1 = 4

Larger ratman shortbow interrupt on Liroc (31%, -25% = 6%, 1d8-1) - (1d100, 1d8-1)

1d100 : (86) = 86

1d8-1 : (4) - 1 = 3

Ratwoman sling interrupt on Herradine (55%, 1d6-1) - (1d100, 1d6-1)

1d100 : (87) = 87

1d6-1 : (5) - 1 = 4

Ratman shortbow interrupt on Herradine (41%, 1d8-1) - (1d100, 1d8-1)

1d100 : (72) = 72

1d8-1 : (7) - 1 = 6

Thanks to your night sight, partial darkness (the 9meters area around the light sources) is treated as illuminated for you and Nunri, so no penalties. Humans however only have the 3m of illuminated around their light sources, beyond that up to 9m is partial darkness (-25%), and beyond that still is darkness (-50%).

Then we'll see if we have time for some old fashioned healing for those who need it

Thanks much. That one got me good. It seems I'm just not good enough to get my protection up to work.

"So we have some prisoners now," Herradine says, looking over the captured ratwomen. "What's the next step. None of you speak rattish, right?"
Aug 7, 2020 7:51 am
"No, but I'm sure someone in town does. Let's take look around and then escort them up
Aug 7, 2020 10:10 am
Cassi says It will be a pain to have to keep them around with us while we travel. Cost of having prisoners.
Aug 7, 2020 10:21 am
"We could split up. Two of us take them back and ask around, the others go ahead."
Aug 7, 2020 10:27 am
And perhaps fall into some trap while we are weaker. as adds her thoughts.
Aug 7, 2020 12:45 pm
"We can leave them here for ten minutes while we scout ahead. It wouldn't be wise to bring them along as we explore."
Aug 7, 2020 12:49 pm
"I believe Nunri is right, but I think it wouldn't hurt to knock them out while we're at it. Or it wouldn't hurt us at least..."
Aug 7, 2020 12:51 pm
Liroc shrugs and search the room and the bodies while the others argue about the prisoners.
Aug 7, 2020 1:00 pm
"I don't like the idea of leaving them here unguarded. There are too many tunnels and corners. Even if we knock them out, others might come and free them again."
Aug 7, 2020 1:16 pm
"what do you suggest then? Kill them? Cut off their hands so they can't hurt us even if they get rescued?"
Aug 7, 2020 1:46 pm
"I suggested taking them back to town already. I'm not going to kill unarmed prisoners. If leaving them behind unguarded is our only option then we'll do that," Herradine says. "It just doesn't feel like a very safe option."
Aug 7, 2020 2:41 pm
While the party argues about the classic prisoner dilemna, Liroc searches around and under a skin finds a small stash of items. Shifting through them, he notices that there's enough in there to earn the party a 26 BPV (SP). Searching the dead and tied up ratmen in the room, Liroc does not find much aside their shoddy equipment, though the archer had 7 meters of moldy rope, and the leader was carrying a nice looking hammer (tool).

We need to backtrack some to search other area's unless someone can find a secret way otherwise. She appears to be ready to direct the party if needed.
Aug 7, 2020 11:07 pm
Herradine shrugs. "Hey, it's your funeral," she says. "And mine, I guess. But alright, I'll take the prisoners, let's go explore."

OOC:
Correct.
You make your way toward the larger room, where you left the 4 other corpses of the ratmen, the sight of which unnerve the females a bit... Once again, if you hadn't noticed while fighting, there are a variety of projectiles and thrown (poor quality) weapons lined on the walls, some traps seem to have been started, but not finished. It's almost as if the ratmen were preparing this room as some sort of kill room... As you make your way further into that room, you eventually notice two more bodies, wearing the uniform of the sewerworker's guild, stacked in a pile in the middle of the room, near some more traps under construction... almost as if the bodies were to be used as bait for something... What were the ratmen afraid of that they felt they needed a kill room to deal with it?
Aug 11, 2020 3:14 pm
"Well, either they were very afraid of the giant spider, or we're missing something.."
Aug 11, 2020 7:11 pm
Cassi says, These creatures are as bad a Kobolds. Appears they have done in the miners. Hopefully we can find some still alive.
Aug 11, 2020 7:30 pm
Nunri shakes her head. To the female captives she asks, "What was all of this for?" uncertain if they understand her. "Monster?"
Aug 11, 2020 9:48 pm
Sewer map update.

The female ratkins seem confused at first, but when it becomes clear the party is interested in the kill room, they're starting to figure out that you might be asking what it is for. They start chittering again, nodding their head toward the south-west, since being tied up, they cannot point with their hands.
Aug 12, 2020 1:31 am
"They were clearly afraid of something. Could be they were chased by something before ending up here and making their stand. In any case, if its that much of a threat, we'll need to clear it."
Aug 12, 2020 4:26 am

Herradine draws something into the air between herself and the ratfolk.
A large round shape and eight legs growing out of it. Then she looks at the ratfolk with a questioning expression. She really wants to know if they were afraid of the spider or if there's more they should be worried about down here.
Aug 12, 2020 2:55 pm
Nunri and Toraclis examine the traps and notice they're very primitive affairs. Spiked branches and dropped weights, these sorts of things, all traps which require someone to manually trigger them. Seems like the main obstacle facing the ratmen was lack of resources. They were probably a mismanagement of limited resources. They were probably limited by whatever refuse they could find in the sewer, but by trying to cover as much of the large room with traps as possible, they were always suffering from shortages of resources. You assume that by cannibalizing all the unfinished traps, you could probably finish two of them. Maybe three if you supply the missing resources yourselves.
OOC:
Tell me what you have in mind and we'll see how feasible they are...
As for Herradine, you're waving your hands in the air which confuses the females ratkin as they're not sure what you're trying to convey here... They understand you're trying to communicate with them, it's just that the concept of drawing shapes in the air seems to be beyond them...
Aug 12, 2020 3:01 pm
"Let's finish the two closest to the entrance. Then we can draw whatever we're having into the room and sorting them."

Nunri looks to the others to find the flaws in her hasty plan.
Aug 12, 2020 3:14 pm
"Nunri, do you think using this one, that one and bits of that other one over there" began Toraclis, pointing at an assortment of half finished contraptions, "we could maybe make a spiked, heavy bar hanging from the ceiling that would drop and hit anything coming from that corridor?"
OOC:
I can picture a sort of spiky tree trunk impaling and bludgeoning an assortment of creatures, swinging like a pendulum from the room's roof to about waist height just inside the corridor.
As for a second one, no ideas yet
Aug 12, 2020 3:46 pm
OOC:
You don't have a tree trunk to work with, but you could definitely make a spiked "something" which could swing down in the corridor and hit anyone there and be heavy enough to inflict 1d8 damage...
Aug 12, 2020 3:50 pm
OOC:
oh I knew there was no tree trunk, that was just so you could picture what I meant. Bolt some metal together to approach the width of the corridor and have some weight to it, add spikes, and that'd work just as well I imagine.
Aug 12, 2020 4:01 pm
Nunri agrees and starts to work with Toraclis to set up the deadfall and spike thing.

Herradine gives up trying to communicate with the ratpeople for now. She turns her attention to the others. "If we're building up traps in this room, we still need to get whatever we're trying to catch with them here. Which means one of us has to be bait while the others wait here to trigger the traps and jump the enemy."
Aug 12, 2020 4:34 pm
Cassi says We really don't have time to fool with this. We need to find the rest of miners. This is going to take too much time to deal with. Seems she is rather impatient about this.
Aug 12, 2020 5:17 pm
Nunri attempts to cobble something up, but with the low-quality crap the ratfolks have been working with, the trap simply fails to work properly (a rope snaps, or a piece breaks or bends, etc.). If you want to try again, you can, but now with the broken parts, you can only make a single trap. Two if the party provides part of their own equipment to build it...
Aug 13, 2020 11:25 pm
"Those traps seems to be more trouble than they are worth. We are stronger than those ratfolk, chances are we can fight whatever is scaring them directly. I really doubt any townsfolk are still alive but Cassi's right, the chances arent nil"
Aug 14, 2020 11:47 am
Nunri agrees, wiping her hands clean and grabbing her hammer.
Aug 14, 2020 3:20 pm
OOC:
Alright, so the last place to explore is the small collector to the west. (red circle for emphasis, you are at the red X).
You grab your stuff and make way to the south-west. Your prisoners suddenly becoming very nervous when they realize where you're going... As you approach the western collector, the area starts smelling a lot more than the sewers usually does... Like the smell of carrion... Coring will start growling, his hackles raised once again.
Aug 14, 2020 9:09 pm
Toraclis nocks an arrow, nose furrowed in distaste, and quietly positions himself behind Liroc, Nunri and Herradine.
I think we may have found our missing sewer crew...
Aug 14, 2020 10:00 pm
Cassi halts a bit and pulls Coring close say, It's okay boy. Take it easy. as Cassi trying to what she can while holding up the lantern high.
Aug 14, 2020 10:20 pm
Lifting her lantern high to see better, you notice a trail of dark, dried blood on one of the walkways, disappearing around the corner...
Aug 14, 2020 10:24 pm
Upon sighting the trail she says figuring all have noted it, That doesn't look good at all. It doesn't bode well.
Aug 14, 2020 11:41 pm
"Stay sharp" Liroc follow the trail first, his shield at the ready.
Aug 14, 2020 11:52 pm
You turn the corner to find a slaughter house. Bodies, or rather what's left of them are piled here and there in the dead end. An arm here, a leg there, a torso bobbing in the sewer over there... The scene is horrifying. Strangely enough, near the end of the cul-de-sac, part of a sword hilt and pommel seem to be poking out of the brackish water... Your prisoners are starting to really panic at that point...

As you're discussing your plans, there is a sudden blur of movement, an explosion of dirty water making its way towards the group, and two tentacles bursting out of the geyser, targeting whoever is in front (Liroc by the looks of it).
OOC:
As I secretly rolled its Deception while hiding under the water against your Perception and you failed to notice the creature, this will be a surprise round, so no reactions.

Edit: Hmm, the dice roller does not seem to lie it when you roll 1dX+1dY, so ignore the +1 after the d8. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! That second attack is a critical hit! Oh no... Ouch... That's 14 damage that bypasses armor... Huh, you know what, never mind my no reaction ruling from earlier. Seeing attacking did not work well last round, and Nunri has proven she can hurt when she does hit, the sewer slug will change tactics and attempt a grapple on Nunri and Herradine this time around...

The grapple misses on Nunri, but succeeds on Herradine... Now the rules on p.35 make it seem as no reaction can be used to avoid a grapple (aside from trying to break free on your round...), so I guess this means the sewer slug now attempts to move directly to inflict pain...

The sewer slug attempts to squeeze the life out of Herradine, inflicting 8 points of damage by constricting her (which sadly pybasses armor).
OOC:
The sewer slug and Herradine are not now locked in grapple, imposing a -25% penalty to any action which hasn't anything to do with their grappling opponent. they may not use reaction (which sort of turns this tragedy to your advantage in a way...)

Nunri is up next.
Aug 18, 2020 6:17 pm
Nunri continues to hammer away, "Steady, get him!"

Rolls

Close combat 56 -25 - (1d100, 2d8)

1d100 : (10) = 10

2d8 : (24) = 6

Aug 18, 2020 8:57 pm
Since the slug is no longer grappling, it will attempt to dodge this attack...

It fails! the slug takes some more damage...

Fifth Round of Combat

Initiative
Cassi 16
Female Ratkin 15
Toraclis 14 (INT 14 for spells)
Coring (pet) 13
Sewer Slug 10
Nunri 8
Herradine 8

Conditions: Here, the sewer is relatively well lit because of the few grates (considered partial darkness, p.31 and p.56), the passages are also narrower (the walkways are about 25 cm/ 9 and 7/8 in. wide) and the ceiling domes lower (meaning that any use of two-handed weapons, even bows, is done at -25% as you lack the space to effectively wield them).

Combat Map

Cassi is up first again!

Rolls

Sewer slug Dodge (30%) - (1d100)

(44) = 44

Aug 19, 2020 2:41 am
Cassi tries to hit something besides the wall with her bow shot. But that isn't this time for sure....

Rolls

Shortbow attack, Damage - (1d100, 1d8)

1d100 : (85) = 85

1d8 : (6) = 6

Toraclis gives Herradine who is now lying on the ground one of his heal I potions
OOC:
if I'm not mistaken this heals 1 HP and wakes her up instantly as it stabilises her major wound
Aug 19, 2020 1:05 pm
OOC:
Right, and/or regain consciousness. So Herradine is back in the fight.
The sewer slug will attempt to grapple Nunri this time. The first grapple attempt succeeded, so it will move on straight to inflict pain. This time around, it fails to constrict Nunri through her heavy armor...
OOC:
Again, Nunri and the slug are grappling, which impose a -25% on all checks not pertaining to their grappling opponents. the slug cannot use reactions either.
Nunri is up. You can attempt to break the grapple with an opposed Unarmed check.

Rolls

Sewer slug grapple attempts (61% x2) - (1d100, 1d100)

1d100 : (2) = 2

1d100 : (80) = 80

Inflict pain (61%) 1d4 - (1d100, 1d4, 1d6)

1d100 : (98) = 98

1d4 : (3) = 3

1d6 : (1) = 1

Aug 19, 2020 1:27 pm
OOC:
We're both grappling, but the rules don't really distinguish between the grappler and the grapplee. Does that mean I can also try to "Inflict Pain", "Immobile", or "Throw"? Or would I have to "Break Free" and then initiate my own Grapple if I wanted to do that?
Aug 19, 2020 1:54 pm
OOC:
Oh, yeah, I noticed that all those checks are opposed Unarmed checks... Which means Herradine might not have been hurt all along... Oh well, a bit late to fix that mistake. I'll let you try to inflict pain this round with a regular roll to fix that, then all following grappling rolls will be opposed.
Aug 19, 2020 2:07 pm
Nunri activates her patented Salty Slug Squeeze, trying to give back what she can.

Rolls

Unarmed 41 - (1d100, 1d4)

1d100 : (15) = 15

1d4 : (2) = 2

The sewer slug seems to be hurting pretty much now...

Herradine is up next.
Aug 19, 2020 4:30 pm
Quote:
Right Leg muscles badly cut/mangled or leg bone shattered and become useless. Fall prone & can only crawl at 2m/round. Lose 2 DEX and 2 STR permanently.
OOC:
This all still applies, right?
Does reducing my attributes reduce my skill values as well?
Instead of trying to attack the slug further and potentially getting hurt worse, Herradine crawls away from the creature to give the others more room to fight it properly.

Yes, and yes. What Toraclis fixed what your unconsciousness and your DEX being temporarily halved... Yeah, there isn't much else you can do right now...

Damn now that Herradine was awake again I was going to suggest retreating to find somewhere we could actually fight, as we're all 2 hand fighters... Let's try and do that if at any point Nunri gets let go
Aug 19, 2020 8:00 pm
OOC:
If we're going to retreat, someone will have to help me, though. I'm reduced to 2m/round movement at the moment

Cassi fires yet another arrow with hope. And for once she hit her target.

OOC:
And it's a critical hit!
Cassi finally managed to work with the constraint of the tunnel, her arrow shooting true and finding its mark right in the middle of that monstrosity's face! If falls back in the sewage water with a splash, the tentacle around Nunri going limp and releasing her. You have finally slain the beast... but at what cost?
Aug 19, 2020 8:50 pm
Nunri hisses, "I'll watch, help them, okay?" She guards the water against a zerg rush of baby slugs, or sewer sharks, or snakes, or underwater ratgirls.

Glancing at Liroc, she knows that it is too late for anything but deep magic.
Aug 19, 2020 8:53 pm
Killer Cassi with her bow watches over any other unknown movements. Haven't see anything yet moving.

Herradine forces herself to sit upright against a wall.
"I could use another round of healing," she grunts. "This thing got me pretty bad."
Aug 19, 2020 9:05 pm
Toraclis doesn't wait to go to Herradine and start to treat her wounds. As he starts to work he asks cassi can you go get that sword from the slug for me? Something this shiny embedded in a slug, it has to be significant"
OOC:
can Herradine herself help me treat her for the +25?

Rolls

Healing (39+25?) - (1d100)

(54) = 54

Aug 19, 2020 9:38 pm
Cassi says I check and see. She has Coring heel there and she inches forward with her bow in hand ready to fire. She only puts the bow away to get the sword out to look at it.
Aug 19, 2020 11:05 pm
OOC:
Sure. Are you doing Minor Injury or Surgery? Or given enough time, maybe even both?
Coring is much more calm now that the beast is gone. You keep an eye out, but see or hear nothing but the occasional splash of some rat in the distance...
Aug 20, 2020 12:45 am
What is the object/sword like as she gets it from the slug.
Aug 20, 2020 1:18 am
Cassi pulls the sword from the side of the sewer slug. It is a short sword which is lightweight. the blade has a silvery sheen which does not seem to have tarnished due to it being stuck in a slimy sewer dweller... As soon as Nunri sees the blade, she recognizes it as being as being made out of dwarf-steel: a very durable but lightweight material.
Aug 20, 2020 1:20 am
Nunri gasps. "That's made out of dwarf-steel: a very durable but lightweight material. Very good find." She's looks at Liroc, feeling guilty about her excitement.
Aug 20, 2020 3:19 am
Cassi says, We paid dearly for it. Appears there are no miners to save.
Aug 20, 2020 6:59 am
OOC:
Ah yes, surgery first, I'm nowhere near heal 4 or 5 yet, and that's the way traditional healing will restore the major wound isn't it?
Toraclis turns to Nunri :
"is there any chance it's magical, go some way to explain why the blasted thing was so big? Or maybe how it got here?"
Aug 20, 2020 12:49 pm
OOC:
Surgery will heal 1 HP and allow Herradine to heal naturally. Normally, healing naturally with a Major Wound is a bit of a pain in tu butt, no pun intended. Minor Wound would give her 1d6 HP back. As for getting rid of the Major Wound, sadly nothing will do that short of a lot of bed rest, and eventually re-purchasing the attribute points lost...
Aug 21, 2020 8:17 pm
OOC:
okay so surgery's done, do I immediately roll for minor heal or does something else happen first?
Aug 21, 2020 8:40 pm
OOC:
No, you can go ahead and roll Minor Healing.
Aug 21, 2020 8:52 pm
After setting Herradine's ugly leg break, Toraclis tries to get her back in at least walking shape

Rolls

Minor Healing (39+25) - (1d100, 1d6)

1d100 : (71) = 71

1d6 : (1) = 1

Aug 21, 2020 9:50 pm
Hmm, no luck. Looks like you'll have to find a way to get her out of here...
Aug 22, 2020 2:20 am
OOC:
Have we fully explored this? I was thinking we had.
Aug 22, 2020 2:41 pm
OOC:
Yes. the sewers have been completely explored. I was waiting to see if you were going back to the sewer worker's guild to make your report and collect your reward to finish this adventure proper or if you wanted to stop it right there...
Aug 22, 2020 3:13 pm
Nunri hands her great hammer to someone and picks up the wounded. Her dwarven frame can carry tremendous loads without trouble. She leads them back to the exit from the sewers and then to the guild to make their report.

"Though one of our band paid the night price, the monster has been defeated. It was a slug the size of a horse. We also chased out a small camp of goblins."
Aug 22, 2020 4:26 pm
OOC:
Yep. Time to exit the place and make a report.
Aug 22, 2020 4:48 pm
The guildsman looks surprised. "Wait, goblins in the sewers? And a huge sewer slug? I thought those things grew to be a bout a meter or so in length..." Then, noticing you're one person short, and carrying someone who looks gravely wounded, he has no reason to doubt your story. "Oh, yes, well, here's your 50 silver pieces each. And here's the the part for your deceased friend. It's only fair after all..."
Aug 22, 2020 4:49 pm
"And rats the size of a dog. Oh and a giant spider too... You should really arm your workers."

"Hmm, there must be a grate leading to the outside which must have been broken it all those things got into the sewers. Looks like we'll have to tell the town guards about this... Oh, I almost forgot, what about the teams we sent down there?"
Aug 22, 2020 9:15 pm
"Well, they seem to have run into the giant spider, rat-men and slug, resulting in their deaths. There was no sign of a survivor anywhere."
Aug 22, 2020 9:39 pm
We searched it all. Any others are dead.
Aug 22, 2020 11:54 pm
"This is tragic. They were good men... Well thank you, you have done us a great service today."
Aug 23, 2020 6:31 am
After returning to the surface, the first thing Herradine did was get her leg properly bandaged, then she follows the others to make the report, during which she mostly stay quietly in the background, not having any more to add and being deep in thought herself.

Eventually, she turns to her companions and asks: "Big slug just doesn't sound as threatening as it was. Would it be inappropriate to call it a huge snake in my song about this? Slugs are basically snakes, after all. Just squishier."
Aug 23, 2020 6:50 am
"In all fairness, it was more akin with a squid or something, as it had tentacles. Then again it tried to crush you to death like a huge snake, or a bear... What do you think of "Bearsquid"? Or maybe "Crushsquid"? I know "Snakesquid" just doesn't sound right though..."
Aug 23, 2020 8:24 am
It was deadly just the same and the ratmen were a problem.
OOC:
Is this the end?
Aug 23, 2020 3:27 pm
OOC:
Yeah, sure. This looks like as good of a place to end this as any. Thanks for playing and helping me learn this new system. I might try another TAoS game in the future.
Aug 23, 2020 3:34 pm
OOC:
Thanks Kalajel. We didn't really get to see much of the Lord of the Rings feel of the world, but we did get to test drive the system. I enjoyed it!
Aug 23, 2020 3:52 pm
OOC:
Thanks for running it! It was a pretty fun dungeoncrawl!
Aug 23, 2020 4:29 pm
OOC:
Thanks kalajel, I enjoyed that, though I think I can safely say that you need pretty specialised characters to be at all useful. Middling at everything pretty much means mostly useless...
Aug 23, 2020 4:59 pm
OOC:
Was good .. Enjoy...
Aug 23, 2020 10:03 pm
OOC:
Yeah, some games are like that. I guess it really depends on what you roll for your attributes... There's also an option for point buy, maybe I should try that one next time...
Aug 24, 2020 6:07 am
OOC:
I meant about the skills more than anything, but it is true that no points to buy magic skills means that you need truly high int to make any spellcaster.
