Brahim hears these comments in the discussion

"Sometimes it is active malice. Somebody decided to make a few birr by selling a nicely counterfeit piece of technology that could look like an artifact." "We should be prepared for everything and have contingency plans." Sa'id

"Now, it would be ideal if you can avoid or outmaneuver my brother's men." ""In addition to the planetary survey, you'll find some data about said artifact. Several detailed scans were sent to my father, who in turn sent them to me and Khalim." Khadija

and he scans the tabula listing the results of multiple spectroscopic tests and chemical composition analyses

then Brahim becomes distracted by the intellectual challenge of creating a convincing fake artifact.

A rock... Sani thinks as she looks at the artefact, though she almost immediately assumes it is an important rock. She remains silent, trying to figure out the practical information that may be useful for the mission: atmosphere, locations, people of interest, opposition...

Sa'id seems puzzled. He's quite intrigued by the picture he's looking at right now, but he does not dare draw any conclusion from it yet. The unassuming look of the artifact could indeed explain why it had gone undetected for so long despite the presence of the community in Aram's Ravine.

Despite being quite full, he takes one last pastry. The Icons only know when will be the next time a decent meal will be served, and Aram's Ravine does not exactly look like a popular destination for fine dining. "I am ready to go whenever anyone else is. I've already packed."

While he waits for the others, he keeps studying the artifact shown on the tabula.

OOC:
For those who succeeded on the Science roll, you know that many Portal Builder artifacts are adorned with presumed alien writing known as portal glyphs. Despite immense efforts by the xeno-archaeological community, no one has yet been able to accurately decipher these glyphs. There are guesses as to what they mean, but no definitive answers.

What portal archaeologists have determined is that there are different styles of glyphs, and most glyphs fall into one of three broad historical periods based on lexigrammic similarities. They are "Early," "Middle," and "Late Era" glyphs. Stylistically, the glyph seems to be Early Era. Artifacts from the Early Era of the Portal Builders are estimated to be over 500,000 cycles old and from the early days of Portal Builder civilization. Artifacts from this period are usually more simplistic when compared to later artifacts. However, these "simplistic" artifacts still produce effects that are miraculous by human standards. Early Era artifacts are generally focused on travel, cartography, and communication.

Khadija hands a circular tag to Zahra. "In return for your services, you'll each be paid 5,000 birr. As usual, you'll receive half of it now, and the other half upon completion of the assignment. If you are able to retrieve more artifacts than the one in that image, you'll be awarded additional pay for a job well done." Batool begins to collect the tabulas. "All relevant information about this assignment has been transmitted to your ship. Before leaving, I recommend picking up a respirator mask or exo-shell. You'll need them on Jina. The Tag that I've provided has your money, as well as supplemental funds that you may need for bribery."

Khadija stands up from the table. "Once you've arrived at Aram's Ravine, keep an eye out for my brother's men. Remember that you have an advantage that they do not have.." She looks at Farouk and smiles knowingly at him. "If there isn't anything else, then go with the Icons, my friends."
OOC:
I'm assuming that you all return to the ship unless you tell me otherwise. Let mew know if decide to purchase anything before leaving. I'd also recommend that you buy a personal communicator, if you don't already have one.
Jul 13, 2020 7:39 pm
OOC:
how much does the gear, that Khadija suggested, cost?
Jul 13, 2020 7:54 pm
OOC:
You have a few options. You can purchase an exo-shell, which is a fully sealed space suit for use in vacuum and dangerous environments. It has 8 hours of built-in air, and the wearer gains a little protection (Armor 2). However, the exo-shell's bulkiness imposes a -2 penalty to Dexterity rolls. The exo-shell is not cheap (2,000 birr) but it's a good investment, since you will likely need it again in the future. So far, I believe only Brahim owns one, which makes sense as he's the ship engineer.

Alternately, instead of an exo-shell, you can buy a survival mask which covers your entire face. It provides one hour of oxygen in an oxygen-free environment. On a planet like Jina, which already has oxygen, it filters out harmful substances from the air for you. This means that on Jina you can wear it indefinitely. Costs 500 birr.

On Jina, as long as you at least have a survival mask/respirator, you can get away with not wearing an exo-shell. If you are only going outside for brief periods of time, you can simply layer yourself in regular clothes, making sure that none of your skin is exposed. Even if you have exposed skin, you'll be fine as long as you aren't outside for more than an hour of two. The sulfuric acid vapors in the air are mild enough that they don't cause immediate burns. Just make sure you don't expose your eyes or lungs to the vapors. Any exposed mucous membranes take damage immediately.

A thermostatic suit is also fully sealed from the environment but much thinner than a space suit. More like a form-fitting hazmat suit. Consequently, it doesn't give you the Dexterity penalty that an exo-shell does. However, it also doesn't provide its own air supply, so you'll have to wear it with a survival mask. A thermostatic suit costs 1,100 birr. Paired with a mask, that's 1,600 birr.
Jul 13, 2020 8:08 pm
Farouk seems uncomfortable when Khadija makes her indirect reference to his abilities. He forces a smile and nods to her, respectfully. He then readies himself to make arrangements and leave to the ship.
OOC:
If there's time, I want to pay a quick visit to my contact to get some information. I'll use 1,600 birr of the 2,500 that I just got from Khadija to buy a thermostatic suit and survival mask.
Jul 13, 2020 8:19 pm
OOC:
Tarek will also use part of his initial payment to buy a survival mask and thermostatic suit for 1,600 birr.
Jul 13, 2020 8:22 pm
As things begin to break up, and the crew makes their goodbyes to their patron, Zahra tells the others, "Meet at the ship in... two hours? That enough time to get your affairs in order before we leave, get any last bits of travel gear you need?"

Assuming there are no major objections, Zahra departs to say goodbye to her parents here on station and invest in some gear.
OOC:
Likewise on the suit and mask business.

Tarek gives a polite bow, to Khadija, as the meeting breaks up. As the crew heads off to handle their business, Tarek heads directly to a reputable equipment dealer, that he's used before.

Walking out a few minutes later, mask and suit in hand, Tarek heads back to the ship and behind all of the necessary pre-flight checks.

OOC:
I'm going to keep this brief so as not to hold up the group.
Farouk

You pay a visit to your contact, Mahmoud Khodr. He's a khabara broker - an information and contract dealer that operates within the Souk Alesh. As such, he's not located very far from Khadija's shop. You take a quick detour down a few side streets and into the local hookah bar from which Mahmoud tends to do his business.

The bar is called "HAZE". It's a small hole-in-the-wall kind of place patroned by a number of the shadier ne'er-do-wells that frequent the free trader markets. On the inside, the business is dimly lit and dingy; a thick layer of hookah smoke fills the air. A number of individuals sit in corners, relaxing on throw pillows, sipping coffee or alcohol, and sucking on the tips of hookah hoses. Your contact sits in the back of the place.

Mahmoud is a small, slim man. Standing up, the top of his head only reaches your chin. He is fairly non-descript in appearance: pencil-thin mustache, short hair, and eyebrows that merge together at the bridge of his nose. He is sitting at a low table with his back to the wall, facing the entrance of the bar. Mahmoud is dressed in a comfortable djellaba, slippers, and a bright red fez resting at a rakish tilt on his head. He seems to be diligently working on his tabula when you arrive.

The khabara broker looks up at you when you approach his table. He places the end of a hookah hose in his mouth; the flavored tobacco in the shisha bowl smolders as he sucks in air. Smoke wafts out of his nose lazily as he watches you.

"Peace be upon you, Farouk bin Khalid. How can this humble broker be of service?"
Jul 13, 2020 8:52 pm
Farouk waves some of the smoke away from his face. He crouches down so that he's at eye level with Mahmoud. The Mystic doesn't relish visiting any of his old Syndicate contacts, but they are useful from time to time. The Icons know that a man can never fully escape his past...

"And peace to you, Mahmoud. I need information." Farouk reaches into his khameez and pulls out his transactor, which is designed to look like the symbol of the Merchant. "300 birr for all the information that you can give me about Aram's Ravine on Jina. I want to specifically know about its leaders. There's an extra 200 for you if you can get it for me quickly."

Mahmoud raises an eyebrow when he hears mention of the acid planet of Jina, but he knows not to ask questions.

"That is not difficult. I can get you the information. If you are in a hurry, I will transmit it to your com link, but it won't take long." He readies his tabula to get working. "But if you want sensitive information, something that will require a spider, well... that may take a little longer."
OOC:
Give me a Manipulation roll, Farouk.
Jul 13, 2020 9:07 pm
Farouk shakes his head. "Not necessary. I'm not looking to blackmail anyone. Just whatever you can put together quickly. I want a lay of the land, so to speak." He stands up and leaves without saying anything else.
OOC:
I give Mahmoud 500 birr and make sure to grab my transactor back from him.

Okay, so Tarek, Zahra, and Farouk run their errands and go back to the ship. Once everyone else chimes in, I'll get going with the next scene.

@Farouk, since you failed the Manipulation roll, he only gives you what you ask for. No extra information of particular import.

Quick question: no way Khadija would equip her team?

I mean, improving her team’s survivability it’s a good investment on her part even if it is just loaned equipment

Though I have no empathy to make persuasive appeals, being a "loyal dog" could help? puppy eyes maybe?
Sani takes a little longer to stand up, waiting to be sure there are no other orders she should be aware of
OOC:
leaving it there for now ;)

When the group leaves, Brahim stops Tarek to ask a question, "Tarek, it sounds like Khalim's crew may be violent. Do you think I need a weapon?"
OOC:
Would it be possible to quickly (en route for example) produce a convincing fake artifact from the scans provided? If so, are there any supplies that should be purchased before leaving?

It's worth a shot, since you and Khadija are friends of a sort. Give me a Manipulation roll, but at -2 penalty because of Khadija's higher Reputation stat. If you've been reduced to zero dice, go ahead and roll 2D6.

OOC:
You can definitely create a fake using the ship's fabricator and 3D printer. You'll just need to pick up some sedimentary stone. You can easily buy a piece of stonework in the Spice Plaza and cannabalize that.

However, the replica won't stand up to close archaeological scrutiny (i.e., chemical tests or imaging scan). But to human eyes and hands, the fake will be completely indistinguishable from the real artifact. It'll depend on how carefully the item gets tested.

It'll also depend on how well your TECHNOLOGY roll goes.
