CHAPTER 1: Aram's Ravine

With a burn of the thrusters, the Riyad exits the docking bay into the Big Black. The view swiftly changes from flashing lights and armanite plating to the inky darkness of outer space.

Almost immediately your viewports are dominated by the presence of Kua. No matter your vantage point on the ship, it's difficult not to catch sight of the jungle planet. It hangs below you as an impossibly large orb of blue and green. Its surface is an unending blanket of viridescence partially obscured by drifting cloud cover and broken by the occasional ocean or mountain range. Staring closely enough, you can even just barely glimpse the Zenithian Hegemony's "Monolith" - the only artificial structure on Kua that can be seen from space. From your position at about 220 miles/350 km above, however, the alien mega-structure referred to as the Monolith looks like nothing more than a small brown dot. On either side of you, various other spacecraft are in the process of leaving or approaching the Ring section of Coriolis. Class I and II vessels are entering through hangar doors, while larger freighters and commercial ships are berthing with the Ring externally.

Up ahead, you observe the approach of the so-called "Net," which first appears as white pinpricks of light in the distance. Coriolis Station does an ever-constant geosynchronous dance with Kua, orbiting the jungle planet at a speed of 7,000 mph/11,265 kph, and the Net follows Coriolis in its rotation like a shadow. This latticework of kilometers-long spindly metal beams is the old skeleton of the ancient arkship once known as the Zenith - the vast vessel that ferried the people now called the Zenithians to the Third Horizon. Although the Zenith was gutted and cannibalized to build what eventually became Coriolis Station, the "ribs" of the arkship have remained to serve as a distinctive outer perimeter. Over the decades, portions of the Net have broken down, been rebuilt, and even been expanded. At the intersection of the heavy beams are habitable hubs that act as docks, loading ports, and service stations. The entire construct seems dangerously fragile; a wild, unpredictable mess of millions of tons of metal girders, spacecraft, and explosive fuel.

As Coriolis recedes and grows smaller behind you, the Net inversely approaches and grows larger. You begin to see the dozens of ships that are currently berthed at the Net: everything from tiny transport shuttles and banged up free trader vessels to large mining barges and pilgrimage liners. There's even a massive Class V freighter bearing the logo of the Consortium; it rests against the beams while its precious cargo is being distributed to smaller ships that zip around like worker bees. Being that Coriolis is a hub of business and travel for the Third Horizon, the Net helps to alleviate some of the traffic and logistical pressure; ships can come here to load or unload cargo, make repairs, and resupply instead of going to Coriolis itself. Not only that, but the Net has earned a well-deserved reputation for being a meeting place to conduct illegal business or activities. Trailing a hundred kilometers behind Coriolis, the Net is a "Wild West" of sorts where the space station's Judicators and Coriolis Guard have little presence.

Once the Riyad passes by the Net, you see nothing but the blackness of open space and the light of distant stars that glitter like pearls in the night. The closest of those stars, the incandescent yellow dwarf that serves as the sun for the Kua System, burns brightly millions and millions of kilometers ahead of you. Far behind the ship, Coriolis can still be seen silhouetted against the verdant surface of Kua. Once you put a healthy amount of range between the ship and Kua's gravity well, the Riyad fully engages its gravity projectors and enters cruising speed for the journey to Jina.
OOC:
The journey to Jina will take roughly a full day for the Riyad. It's a short trip so it should be uneventful. You aren't likely to suffer any problems or random encounters with corsairs.

Let me know if your characters are doing anything noteworthy during the journey. Otherwise, we'll get right to the acid planet.

Brahim and Sa'id will presumably spend the first few hours of the trip working on making the fake artifact.
Jul 21, 2020 7:17 am
Sani will take the time to offer the icon statues she didn't yet:
Tarek Ahmed : The Judge
Brahim: The Deckhand
Sa'id ibn Afreen wibn Iskandar: The Gambler

She'll spends some of the time playing hack&seek with RIYA and maybe chatting and keeping an eye on things.
OOC:
Meanwhile Tarek is likely to find a Exo Shell in the armory and the med bay seems to be equipped with an extra med kit.

For the most part, Zahra remains on the bridge, especially for a short hop like this one, unless she's needed elsewhere. She digs through files on Jina, looking for information about factions, and especially the individuals associated with them. It's always helpful to know whose palms she's going to have to grease, and which people to avoid. It's slow going, and she's not particularly known for her patience when it comes to research, but she sticks with it as long as she can.

OOC:
Oh, that will be interesting. I guess I will have to roll Manipulation to clean out well after creating the artifact. @GM, what happens in a draw in opposed roll, does the defender win? Also, should also Brahim roll? I guess that if we both roll, than the worse result should be compared with Sani's, like when in DnD the lowest stealth roll in a group counts for the whole group.
Sa'id will spend the time of the trip working with Brahim on the artifact. He will try to clean thoroughly after himself, since he doesn't want others to find out he was working on creating the artifacts, but he won't be extremely meticulous since he has no reason to think any of the other crew members are suspecting him of creating the artifact.

Once he meets Sani, he will thank her for the statue. He will be slightly embarassed since he doesn't have anything to offer in return, but he tells her that in the Spice Plaza he found an authentic Dabarani Lotus cheese and a wonderful jar of date honey produced in a Zalosi monastery. He promises that he's going to bake a Qatayef dessert for her next time.

Once finished with his work, he will go to the arboretum to rest and read a book in peace.

I added a hack&seek (data djinn) roll, literally to hack and outsmart RIYA. Their relatioship is like that. Though this hack is to relax her for entry on Jina

I think there's a help mechanism or somethign that may be used in these cases. Not sure how it works
Sani, lacking most of the facial expression available to others, tries to force a friendly smile as she accepts Sa'id's offer of Qatayef dessert Dabarani Lotus cheese and date honey. Is is not that she can't appreciate the delicacy and fine quality of the ingredients. It is just that she doesn't understand very well, though she has memories of its extreme relevance, the gift exchange culture. Though she tries.

OOC:
I think in this case, performing the action in two doesn't count as help? In other games I'm DM'ing, I make it so that it is easier to sneak as an individual than as a group, because you need only one person to fail (e.g., by tripping, or making a noise) for the whole group to be discovered, so I make them roll with group disadvantage. Each of them rolls sneak skill, and the worst outcome from all the rolls is the roll assigned to the group. Similarly with Sa'id and Brahim, it would take only one of them to forget an item on the desk for it to be found later, so the worst roll between Sa'id and Brahim should be used, I think.

P.S.: Correction @SANI, sorry that wasn't clear. Sa'id didn't offer the honey and cheese to Sani. He said he found them in the market and using those ingredients he's going to bake a pastry dessert for her, later eventually. Sa'id likes coking :)

Unless he has tasks to tend to on the ship, Farouk usually spends a large part of most trips in prayer or meditation inside the chapel. Given that he doesn’t have the technical skills possessed by the rest of the crew, the Mystic does odds and ends wherever he can, but otherwise stays out of people’s way.

Farouk finds Sani and thanks her again for the Messenger statuette. He also checks with Riya to make sure she isn’t still mad about going to Jina.

Brahim accepts the Deckhand statue from Sani and smiles broadly

"Shukran Sani for this statue of the deckhand. He will have a place of honor overlooking my tools and I will read him stories and sing him songs.

Brahim is not so much a "believer" as he is a practical scientist - the influence of the icons is an observable phenomenon and must therefore be taken seriously despite our lack of understanding regarding the icons. Gravity existed and was observable long before Newton and subsequent physicists determined formulas eventually enabling humans to build grav projectors and travel the stars.

Brahim also understands the necessity for a humanite to not stand out too much. Even if he is not orthodox (correct beliefs) he can show orthopraxis (correct worship) as he conducts his own anecdotal experiments regarding the efficacy of these practices.

correction below. Sorry about this
Sani stares blankly at Brahim as he mentions "stories and singing" to the icon. "Service tools and stories. That seems like a good sacrifice to the Deckhand" she aggres with him, impresed that a lowly humanite would show such respect for the Icons.

Brahim tilts his head slightly,

"Yes, that is the proper sacrifice to the Messenger. However, this is a statue of the Deckhand. In addition to a well kept shop and dedicated service to the Riyad, I like to tell the tired boy stories and sometimes sing songs. I enjoyed listening to the stories my father and mother told the deckhand statue when I was a tired young boy, before I came to the Riyad. I especially like stories about the Nadir.

Perhaps you are focusing too much on the crude and dubious beliefs regarding the origins of the Mutahadir humanites. I have heard it said that the Messenger was curious about sex so he seduced a woman and the resulting offspring are the mutahadir, who are exceptionally intelligent like the Messenger. I have also heard more more crude versions.

However, it is more likely that we Mutahadir were created through biocode modification and sculpting, as were the Sirb or Xinghur. Riya can share her data files about different types of humanites if you would like to know more."

Brahim straightens his head

"I respect the Messenger and I am thankful that he blessed my biocode, however, it is the Deckhand to whom I pray most often. Thank you again for the statue."

Brahim places the statue on a shelf overlooking his tools and returns to work cleaning and calibrating equipment without another look at Sani.
OOC:

p234-235
THE DECKHAND
The Deckhand is usually portrayed as a tired boy holding a broom or a switch key. The Deckhand can bless homes, ships, and stores, if they’re well-kept and the right offerings have been made. The Deckhand protects the unfortunate as the folklore always depicts the icon sharing their fate – tricked out of a well-earned reward. Some stories describe the Deckhand a bit differently, as a rascal that disturbs commerce, destroys electronics on ships, or makes sure the shelves in the shops are dusty and crooked. This aspect of the
Deckhand is called the Waba, or the Fox. The best sacrifice to the Deckhand is a well-kept shop, balanced accounts, and meticulous service to one’s ship. In the chapels, a common offering is to wash the altar of the Icon and read a fairytale for the tired boy.

p223-233 THE HUMANITES
The humanites are a scorned and despised group. They are modified humans created to perform certain functions or endure certain hardships better than base humans. Even the plebeians, whose work is almost the same as that of the humanites, look down upon them. The humanites often live isolated lives, in remote colonies on hostile worlds or distant space stations, like the Sirb for example. Some humanites live as nomads after their employers or masters have disappeared, like the Xinghur[/ on Lubau.

Recognizing a humanite without advanced sensors and bio-metric scanners can be hard. Tiny sculpts like reptilian third eyelids, extremity hearts, or modified glands are invisible to the naked eye, while larger modifications usually are the result of cosmetic sculpting on Coriolis, the independent station Ahalimm or in the Algolan meat district. According to the stories of some of the more primitive peoples, there are humanites that have lost almost all their humanity and have become more like animals. Rumors claim that the nekatra are actually the result of the Legion experimenting with lupine biocode.

OOC:
@Farouk

A data packet is transmitted to your comm link as the Riyad is leaving Coriolis. The transmission comes from Mahmoud Khodr and contains the information that you requested. It consists of a number of reports and rumors taken from the Coriolis Bulletin and infonet, as well as some images and statistical data. The information can be summed up as follows:

On Jina, only three factions see any major representation among the populace: The Free League, The Consortium, and the Nomad Federation.

Most of the workers on the planet are members of the Free League. Foremost among them is a man named Hommar Lannah. He's the local union sheikh and represents the interests of the miners on Jina. He's passionate about miners' rights and reportedly butts heads with the Consortium in Aram's Ravine.

The Consortium's Colonial Agency is supposed to be administrating Aram's Ravine, but since the trivium deposits dried up decades ago, the Consortium mostly neglects the place. There is one representative of the Colonial Agency stationed at Jina: a man named Shulan Moro. It's something of an open secret that Moro is corrupt.

Two Consortium-aligned merchants control most of the economy on Jina. Bauxite mineral mining operations, as well as the mines themselves, are owned by Lhorac Ignazu, the Bauxite Baron. Ignazu is an industrialist whose family lost most of its wealth when the trivium dried up. His past is mostly a mystery. There are rumors that he is an exiled Sadaalian theocrat, and this would seem to be supported by the fact that he constantly wears masks (a Sadaalian custom). Others believe that he simply does this to create a mystique around himself.

The salt industry on Jina is controlled by Rania Dur-ul-Huda, known more commonly as the "Salt Widow". She is another wealthy merchant whose business suffered when the trivium disappeared. Rania's husband and business partner, Tafiq, died under strange circumstances, having fallen into the Desera River and dissolved by the acid. There was a brief investigation by the Colonial Agency, but it was concluded to be an accident.

Lhorac Ignazu and Rania Dur ul-Huda reportedly dislike for each other immensely, and they are both constantly competing for total control of the settlement. Almost everyone in Aram's Ravine works for one merchant or the other.

The Kalites are a tribe of wayfaring nomads who claim membership in the Nomad Federation. They are a species of acid-resistant humanites who live a bedouin lifestyle in the acid deserts outside of Aram's Ravine. The Kalites keep to themselves and have very little to do the with the politics of the settlement.

In the midst of his prayers, Farouk stops to check his comm link. Given the importance of the information, he momentarily stops praying to review the data. Afterwards, he transmits a copy of the information to everyone else on the ship.

Zahra

You begin reading through the information that Khadija provided, as well as any information that the Riyad has about Jina. You also receive a data packet from Farouk; apparently one of his contacts consolidated a bunch of information about Aram's Ravine.

As you read everything, it seems clear that Shulan Moro is probably the one whose palms are easiest to grease. Several free trader captains have joked about bribing the man to get out of paying excise taxes. The two Consortium merchants, Lhorac and the Salt Widow, however, seem like they could be problematic. Power hungry small-time oligarchs with henchmen are probably best avoided. Likewise, Hommar, the miners rep, sounds very single-minded and self-righteous based on what you read about him.

Still, most of the information you read about these individuals is very general, and its far from thorough. Nothing is terribly revealing, but it gives you some idea of what you are walking into.

Khadija's father's contact is a man named Salim Nasser - the settlement's resident doctor. He is the one who reported the existence of the artifact to Aldair Jubal, and whom Aldair paid to stay quiet about it.

About halfway into the trip, Riya’s voice interrupts your reading. "Captain, making my usual mid-day report. All systems still at optimal. The Bulletin’s Astrostradium reports no corsair activity on our route, and there is a micro-meteor shower alert for the vicinity, but the alert is only yellow so not too concerned." Riya seems to have concluded, but then chimes in, "Oh, and we’re being followed..."
