OOC:
@Brahim, you can give me a Technology roll for your research into bauxite and salt mining tech.

Also, we'll assume that Riya informs you about the mystery ship. Unless the captain explicitly tells her to keep quiet, Riya sees no reason not to inform everyone about it. Also, she likes to gossip.

As far as the relay satellite idea, that is definitely feasible. You could modify a sensor buoy and launch it from the countermeasure dispenser. Normally, the dispenser buoys are intended for distracting missiles, but it wouldn't be too difficult to attach extra sensors to one of them in order to extend the Riyad's sensor range.

As far as information about the Kalites, you find the same information that Sa'id was given by Riya. Very little about their biology. Because the Riyad doesn't have a Library Database feature, her data on certain topics is fairly limited.

Riya nods her head simultaneously on every screen projecting her image. "Will do, captain. We could also allow the other ship to get a little closer. Maybe a quarter of a nanoparsec? That should make their transponder signal strong enough for me to get the ship's name and registration number."

Riya looks at Sani and winks, though the gesture only registers on the screen closest to the spy.

Tarek keeps his eyes on the screen, but listens to Riya. Glancing over at Zahra, Tarek offers a suggestion. I can absentmindedly slow the ship down and act like I'm napping at the wheel. That could cause them to catch up enough to identify them. Then I can wake up and accelerate back to normal.

Brahim remains in the cargo bay workshop and uses the internal ship communication to contact the bridge...

"Captain. I must inform you that if the other trailing ship is able to match variations in speed and vector to remain out of signal range, that I can rig a sensor buoy to extend the transponder signal range. The buoy would launch from the countermeasure dispenser and upon receiving the trailing ship's transponder signal the buoy will transmit the same signal; initially increase the range of the transponder signal by 97.3% with a diminishing range as the trailing ship closes the distance to the buoy. The device will enable Riya and Sani to identify the ship.

@Brahim, remember that you can pray to the Icons to re-roll all dice that aren’t sixes. Use the 11d6 roll.

Tarek and Brahim's suggestions come in nearly at the same time, and Zahra nods. "Let's try Brahim's suggestion first. Sani, stay on the sensors. As soon as our friends come within range of the buoy, I want to know who they are."

She flashes Tarek a familiar smirk -- the friendly teasing she often employs with the pilot. "You can fall asleep at the helm later."

Brahim

With the captain's go-ahead, you retrieve a dispenser buoy from one of the armament chambers and get to work. You replace some of the buoy's factory electronics with a transceiver and add extra sensor nodes to the device. Although the transmission range is limited, there will be more than enough time for the buoy to relay sensor data about the other ship before the Riyad moves out of the buoy's range.

OOC:
Since there was one success in the 11d6 roll the attempt succeeds, correct? Is there any advantage to additional successes? (is it worth praying to the icons since it will give you a darkness point?)

OOC:
If you get three successes ( a critical success), you would get more sensor information from the buoy. Otherwise, it isn't necessary and the attempt is a normal success.

"Captain. I have completed the modifications to the buoy. It is ready to be deployed at your command."

I will stay with the normal success this time. Thanks for the clarification.

@Brahim, we'll assume that you've been given the go-ahead to launch the buoy.
The dispenser buoy, now modified with sensors and a transceiver, is launched from the ship. The Riyad continues on course, with the buoy proceeding in the opposite direction. Within the span of an hour, the buoy begins to relay more detailed information about the mystery ship.

The transponder signal identifies that it is, indeed, Al-Lamiya - a Class III "Azuk" Model gunship. Registry number C-11718-0034. Manufactured in the Chelebs Shipyard on Mira. Registered to a Captain Fareed Abaza.

The sensor readings for Al-Lamiya indicate that, although the ship is only slightly larger than the Riyad, it is more heavily armed and armored. Along with accelerator cannons, the ship is equipped with torpedo launchers. The hull also sports thick armanite plating. This is most definitely a combat vessel that one would see in the hands of mercenaries. Although the Riyad is faster and more maneuverable, Al-Lamiya has superior firepower.

Riya narrows her eyes. "A direct confrontation would not be advisable."
Aug 11, 2020 7:47 am
"Sensors confirm that's likely to be Khalim's crew" Sani informs Zahra. "RIYA is right. We can't take then in space, but we may be able to set up a trap once we land"
Aug 11, 2020 10:14 am
Sa'id follows with interest the development. "Well done, Brahim". He congratulates, in a dry tone. He then clears his voice "Riya, a question. Any chance Al-Lamiya has detected our buoy? Or are they unaware of our... study? A first-order approximation for the median of the probability distribution function would suffice..." He shrugs, looking at the captain. "There might be advantages to being able to credibly feign ignorance, cap."

"If they haven't yet detected it, they will soon. It's possible that they will miss the buoy but not likely, unless they are equipped with very substandard sensors."

Riya furrows her brow. "The more that I analyze probabilities, the more I'm left to conclude that Al-Lamiya wanted to be detected. If Khalim's hired muscle are at all competent, they'd know that we can detect them at the edge of our sensors. As Sa'id has said previously, this other crew knows where we are going, so why follow us? I believe this is a psychological tactic. They are attempting to unnerve us."
Aug 11, 2020 7:12 pm
"Well said, Riya. That makes perfect sense." He scratches the back of his neck. "That can work also in our favour. They won't destroy our ship while we're heading towards Jina. They need us to recover the artifact. And they won't destroy our ship while we're coming out of Jina, they'd need to recover the artifact intact."

He fidgets with something in his pocket. The rest of the team cannot possibly know that a replica of the artifact is just sitting there.

"Of course they might be able to damage our ship and incapacitate it. But they would still need to board us to recover the artifact. All that firepower is mostly for show. In case of conflict the real battleground will take place here. And I wouldn't bet on any woman or man facing Tarek, one-on-one." He adds, with an amused smile. "As long as we hold the artifact, we hold all the cards. That's our insurance out of Jina. We'd still need to exercise caution, but I think we shouldn't let their arsenal intimidate us."
