"I think this should be a mutual decision, but I'd support it. Sometimes we got to do what we need too."

He pauses for a moment "Though first, I want to know who knew the material was here Head Librarian?" His eyes narrow looking around the small room then back at the Librarian, trying to read the answer on his face before he speaks.

The Head Librarian hesitates, then shrugs. "Most of it is the contents of a lost mail carrier pouch that was meant for a colony in the middle expansive period. Dating from the time First Contact was made with the R'thnx. Quite a lot of updates on their culture, biology, history, and religion. That last is important. After the war, information on the faction that caused the conflict was suppressed... including their cult of the Wave."

The Archivist sighs. "It is our great shame. Humanity's first contact with another species was sparked by their assimilationist beliefs.. which we have unsealed to lead to the current troubles here."

The Head Librarian continues, "I was Assistant Head before the conflict here. My superior ordered the materials sealed, then disappeared. The Wave grew here shortly thereafter. I fear that with the material in their hands, they could gain popular support and reignite the coup attempt in earnest."

"Well your interest is in retrieving the datacache and the... book, right? Maybe we should start from the forced Storage Vault they were kept in?... Do you want to lead the way?" , Spanner says looking at the Head Librarian and his Archivist.
Jul 30, 2020 10:27 pm
"Sounds like a place to start. Do you think the former head librarian had anything to do with the cult, disappearing after finding information on it, is quite suspicious either they were grabbed, or they're inside if the materials were sealed it might not all have remained there before it got sealed either."
Jul 30, 2020 10:45 pm
"can you tell us more about your predecessor? Their involvement in this matter may be important. Also, how did the movement start? With a single individual or incident?"

While the others are talking, Del stands aside with the tablet and reads through the contract, focusing on the exact obectives, limitations, time frame and payment. Terror sits next to him, competely still, like a statue, staring at the Head Librarian.

"A rather excellent question, Jilick." Gideon says while waiting for the other's decisions. He watches the two casually but not without a sense of wariness.
Aug 4, 2020 12:01 pm
Afinlo is watching the head librarian and archivist carefully as they answer the questions, trying to detect any deception. Finally, he says, quietly and calmly, "were there any cameras near the vault? And who other than us know the cache was here?"
Aug 4, 2020 12:57 pm
The Head Librarian listens to the concerns, each in turn. "Fair questions. Firstly, Yes, there were cameras, and the footage reveals nothing." He taps his desk, transferring the footage for the Lance to study as they will. "The list of people who knew about the cache was restricted to Head Librarian Sorens and myself, Senior Archivist Mandel who is actually on the other side of the planet this week, and Archivist Burroughs."

He brings up some notes on the holodisplay. "The Cult of the Wave was revived one standard year ago tomorrow. It's origins remain a mystery. This is not the first time such a revival has occurred, two other worlds have suffered from it in the past three centuries. It is an insidious and difficult thing, some kind of embedded textual engramattic programming in the language that seems to translate easily into several race's languages." He gestures at Jikick. "All of us here except your Ick Lancer would be affected. Their language protects them."

He brings up a vid from a year ago. On the screen, popular game show "Tetrahedron Of Fortune" is interrupted by a burst of actual static, and replaced with a scrolling message that reads "THE WAVE SPREADS." after several scrolls, a hooded figure in white with a gold sine wave pattern across its full face mask appears. "I am the Reverend Sine. Your suffering has ended. Universal peace will be brought with the cresting of The Wave. Rejoice. We are coming."

The broadcast is briefly resored to the game before the taking news heads break in, at which point Ordenã stops it. "Within a week it was a full on civil war." He sighs. "I myself had suspected that Sorens was involved, but the iconography of the cult is no longer associated with them in the modern mind." He opens the desk drawer. "We found this in a hidden compartment." He puts a small replica ground vehicle on the desk.

Carefully putting the unbelievably rare and ancient artifact away, he realized the appraising looks around him. "It's a replica, but someone put a lot of love into it." He frowns. "Maybe my old boss himself."

His desk chimes. "Archivist, can you show the Lance to the Vault please? I have to meet with the board of governors shortly."
The Vault is intact.. a hardened room that could withstand anything up (but not including) antimatter weapons. Like many things on the planet, it is tetrahedral, a dodecahedron of semi-inert superdense material 12 meters across each face. It is the only thing standing in the rubble of this wing.

Within, now completely empty, rows and rows of sterile stasis cubes sit idle and depowered.

"Archivist Burroughs, the Head Librarian said the vault was forced. Can you please show us that, so we may see what was used to force it? Also, where was the Terra Cache stored and what were the other items which were taken with it? Jilick asks, as he pokes around vault looking for any clues.

"Please send that video to us", Afinlo says. Cracking the programming might be valuable for clues. He wondered briefly why the Gentians hadn't heard of the cult of the wave, but reasoned they were likely too small scale.

As he looks around the vault empty containers, Spanner mumbles to his companions, next to him in the search. "Er... Guys? Why do you think the Head Librarian showed us that replica thing? Am I the only one to find that bizarre? I mean, sure, Sorens might have an interest in earth artifacts, but... Stealing the datacache and book? What for? Completing his toy car collection?? " he asks confused.
Aug 5, 2020 1:52 pm
"I don't recognize that vehicle, but something is nagging me, something about the odd attachment in the back, the piece that looks like its store in or attached but is in different colors?" Gideon says. "Does that look like am unfinished jetboard? The kind kids and some adults on a few planets play around on?"

"Are any of you familiar with the jetboards, not as common as they used to be and the fin is wrong, no idea if that has any relevance at all, or just a toy from his youth." Gideon looks as the librarian and asks "Can I see that? See if it has a makers mark or is a print?"
Aug 7, 2020 2:43 pm
"Maybe the toy car is a signature, we should check local criminal records, maybe there is a notorious thief working in these parts," Del says as he exhales another puff of smoke.

The Librarian demurs on letting anyone handle the replica, but transfers the video to your archives as he hurries to his meeting.

On the way to the vault, the Archivist answers the question at hand. "Back on Old Earth, in the era just before humanity left the planet for the first time, there was a culture of those who used an early, unpowered variant of the jetboard called a "surf board" to go "surfing"... on waves. When the book first arrived in the Sol System, the original human version of the cult revived their iconography, idiom, and method of dress to represent themselves." She quickly transfers some reference material to the Lance.

At the vault, there is a clear mark of some device that was adhered to the entry panel sensor, but no obvious trace of what it was other than vague outline similar to a pair of VR/AR goggles with an odd protrusion.

She leads you through to an entirely nondescript storage unit roughly in the middle of the area. "Here we are. The Cache was stored in unit 1963."
Aug 8, 2020 4:31 pm
"That device is strange indeed", Jilick puzzles over it. I wonder if the protrusion is a handle of some type? You didn’t answer my question on what else was taken with the data cache?"
Aug 8, 2020 5:33 pm
Looks puzzled at the goggles print, then asks, "is there a record of the title of this book? Like a shipping manifest?"
He will start examining unit 1963 for markings or other clues.

"Well now I understand the name of the group." He says aloud. "I can't add much to that, Earth history is only marginal in my line of work, but that device used on the vault is interesting," he says while others examine the item. He pauses and thinks.
Aug 12, 2020 6:51 pm
"I think we are focusing on a wrong thing here," Del says putting away his electronic cigar and exhaling last plume of smoke, "As I understand it, the Cache was stolen very recently and the culprtis are likely related to the Wave cult." He pats Terror who is standing close. "I am sure if we look we can find out where the nearest Wave cell is located and go there straight away. Or, we could conact local crime syndicate and ask them about the burglary. I am sure they will be willing to clear their names and help us if we will hold them accountable for the crime even if they didn't commit it."
