Also some technology questions:
Nanobots? Yes, no? Minimal? Only for the wealthy?
Also knowing a bit about the actual shield technology being practically impossible without obsene power generarors (see: entire neulear reactor for a weak shield) maybe only the largest ships have shields?

I would not worry too much about tech. After all, we have a memetic brainwashing virus transmitted through a book. Shields and nanos seem not too far afield, as long as no thinks shiny thoughts about them. This is all beat up crap, after all. Used Future.
