Napo looks around to see if anybody was paying attention to their conversation.

"On a eu un peu de temps pour examiner le contenu de la mallette. Beaucoup d'information la dedans, mais pas beaucoup de réponses.

About the artifact, i'm pretty sure I saw it on the Exhibition brochure. So we should be able to identify it properly once we get to San Francisco. There is a lot of article and notes about a supposedly cursed expedition to Venus, people that came back from it keeps dying mysteriously. We should go to a quieter spot to review that together actually, try to figure out how it all links together."

"If it's in the exhibition brochure," Helen asks sipping her tea, "why is it in the professors pack? I'd think if it's in the brochure it's in the exhibition."

"You think one of them is a forgery mum?" Ruby asks.

"There 'ave been a lot of cursed expeditions to Venus," Mariette says taking another spoonful of soup. "Do you know which one it was in particular?"
OOC:
Off the top of his head Napoleon thinks it was in 1884 or 1885, if he looks he'll find it was the Muller Expedition to the Gula Highlands and the Venusian Alps and it was in September 1884 and declared lost in 1885.
"Just cuz folks keep dying don't mean it's a curse," Buford mutters, "bunch a fellers I used to run with got their hands on some CSA gold. Gold weren't cursed, boys just kept killin' one another till there was only a couple of them left and no one remembered where they'd hid the gold."

Nathaniel will try to tactfully steer the conversation towards Mariette's sister and Helen's Mistress, Lady Fortingall - both taken by the mysterious German-speaking crew of the deadly airship.

"My ladies... do you have any thoughts or theories as to what the reason of these kidnappings might be? Were the airship men simply looking for hostages... or do you see a different design behind these despicable acts? "
Oct 6, 2020 11:16 pm
"It was in 84 or 85, i can tell you the exact one by doublechecking but i'd prefer a more private location"

@BUford "I was raised better than to believe in curses but that how they call it in the articles. Mens are usually plenty capable of ruining themselves without any supernatural intervention,, I concur."
Oct 7, 2020 12:54 pm
"Where would you like to go that's more private?" Buford asks, "I think there's a sitting room across the hall or we could use one of the bedrooms upstairs."
Oct 9, 2020 9:50 pm
"I think the bedrooms would be best if they are big enough. We could show everyone what we are dealing with"
Oct 11, 2020 8:18 pm
"Give us a moment then to check Mariette's dressings I'm certain her room is plenty large enough to accommodate everyone." Helen says.

"Top of the stairs, end of the hall," Ruby says clearing everyone's plates and taking them back towards the kitchen.

Helen helps Mariette to her feet and they head towards the stairs.

"What you reckon?" Buford asks looking at Napoleon and Nathaniel, "Think those fellers from the airship got someone in town?"
Oct 11, 2020 9:03 pm
"If they don't, it's certainly not for scruple... after all, they did not hesitate to viciously strike a civilian train for their mysterious purposes... this is the nearest town to the attack point, it is possible that they would keep an eye at who's coming and going. Especially if they still haven't found what they were after," he answers, reasoning out loud.

Considering it here, in front of a good meal, wearing passable clothes and under the shelter of a roof, the gravity of the attack strikes home in its enormity. It was more like an act of war! A remarkable organization was behind this, ruthless to the point of striking a large number of civilians with impunity, on foreign soil and airspace. Wars have started over much lesser incidents, he broods.

He shares his observation with the others around the table.

"That's my opinion too. Even if they don't have people around, its just a matter of time till they come dig for infos."

Napo looks at his almost empty plate, the table still full of food and the stairs with a sad expression for a second. He then smiles again and proceed to fill a second plate and bring it to the room upstairs with him.

Heading upstairs they find Helen about to come downstairs, "We're done," Helen says quietly, "she looks worse than she is I'm certain. No signs of infections, what ever was in that old woman's poultice seems to have done the trick."

She leads the men back to the door at the end of the hall, inside there's a large room with two beds, a small one and a larger bed intended for a couple. Marianne is propped up against a number of large pillows on the bigger bed and Ruby is finishing disposing of a number of bandages soaked in dried blood.

Marianne smiles just a little, "Welcome to my parlor, entrer, entrer." She gestures towards a couple of high backed chairs near the window and the smaller bed. "I don't 'ave much to offer but make yourselves comfortable."

Helen closes the door behind them checking the hall twice before latching it.

"Well, what do we know," Buford says in his baritone rumble.

"They are German and they 'ave a Zeppelin with some kind of exotic weapon," Mariette begins.

"They took, Lady Fortingall and Professor Higgins," Ruby adds.

"And her sister," Buford says.

"Oui," Mariette says.

"And there's a sacré bunch more!"

Napoleon invite Nathaniel to open and show all the content of the bag to the group. He goes through quickly what he noticed yet. He shows the metal artefact that he referred earlier, confirmed the Venus expedition precisely and mention that he has some contacts that should tell them more about the European anarchist mentioned in the article and letters.
Oct 18, 2020 2:54 pm
Nathaniel nods and displays the contents of the bag on a bed.
"the metal artifact is most puzzling. An unknown metal or alloy, no doubt... Did you say a similar one was listed on the Exhibition pamphlet?"

He looks for the reference in the pamphlet, looking for a description to try understand whether the specimen in their possession was the very same, on its way to be displayed.
Oct 22, 2020 2:09 am
Looking at the pamphlet, Nathaniel makes a curious observation, the one in the pamphlet does not appear to be the same object, it is similar but it's shape is different. While the one you possess is a quarter of a circle with a large diamond on the end, the one in the pamphlet does not have a diamond on the end, it has instead an indent where the diamond shape would go.

"Nice catch! From the looks of it, we could have an alien puzzle on our hands!"

Napoléon is visibly excited at the prospect.
Oct 23, 2020 8:04 am
Nathaniel will ask again whether anyone has knowledge of the three kidnapped persons - Mariette's sister, Lady Fortingall and Professor Higgins- being connected in any way to the Venus Expedition.
OOC:
did any of the characters heading to the Exhibition correspond with the organizers, or curators? Thinking that a telegram to warn them to protect their artifact might be useful here, before the airship zaps its way to San Francisco to steal it, in case that's their interest

"The wreck was so terrible," Ruby says standing next to Mariette's bed, "how could they assume any of us would survive?"

"The people they took were all in the last car," Helen says, "I think they may have presumed that the damage they inflicted would be considerably less than what occurred."

Buford nods, "They did hit the engine as soon as it came out of the tunnel, they probably figured everything inside the tunnel would be fine. Boy howdy were they wrong, reduced everything in front of our car to ash."

"This professor," Mariette asks, "what was 'e a professor of?"

"I think he was an Egyptologist," Ruby says, "I saw him looking at a small parchment full of hieroglyphs, he kept it in his jacket pocket."

"What did Lady Fortingall do?" Helen asks, "She was a lady so I assume tea parties and fancy lunches."

"Oh no," Ruby says, "my lady was an inventor, much to her fathers disapproval. He did not think a proper lady should have axle grease on her hands and carbon soot on her nose."

"What about yer sister?" Buford asks, "What did she do?"

Mariette smiles, "My sisters was a great many things, a good girl was not one of them. She was however, not especially bright."

"How about you?" Helen asks looking at Mariette.

"I am a designer, an architect of sorts," Mariette smiles, "I do not invent things, I refine them, make them better. That is where my talents lie."
Oct 25, 2020 2:50 am
"Well, I believe we have quite the team here!" says Napo with a smile.
"Let's dig into this a few hours and see what we can figure out."

Napoleon encourage everyone to read and brainstorm for the evening. He take note of the clues, links and ideas than comes out.
Oct 25, 2020 10:24 pm
OOC:
If you have any questions about things now seems to be an appropriate time to pose them to me.

OOC:
Nathaniel might well have, he would have had to send an expression of interest that he was going and then in turn received an invite. This Exhibition is loosely tied to the inventors convention so sending a telegram to the inventors would more than likely find it's way to the Exhibition curators.
