GENDER ROLES
The real 19th century was a patriarchal society where men had power over women, and women were constrained in what they could do, say, and what jobs they could hold. However, this roleplaying game is not about the real 19th century but the mythical Scandinavia. It is up to the gaming group to determine how your version of Scandinavia looks like and how you will handle this around the table. We see no reason to let historical injustice limit the options available to the players, particularly since there are lots of examples of powerful women in historical literature and fairy tales.

Avatar check for Trond Larsen, 30 year old hunter from Fredrikstad Norway.
Aug 4, 2020 3:24 am
Back atcha Trond! I'm just a poor vagabond.
Aug 4, 2020 3:48 am
I may change mine. For some reason, I thought it was set in modern times. I think I missed by 150 years or so.
Aug 4, 2020 4:29 am
The setting is non-specifically somewhere in the nineteenth century, in an alternate reality.
Aug 4, 2020 5:35 am
So my scoped hunting rifle pic is about 150 years out of date. Back to the searching.
Aug 4, 2020 5:39 am
This is a little more fitting. Test #2

Dag's dog Sketch.

Dag's dog is presumably just window dressing with no attributes, right GM?

Right. Equipment, including pets, gives you a bonus die on certain tests. Dogs won't act independently the way they might in other games, with separate skills or attacks.

For those coming in, the remaining archetypes for step 1 are:

Available archetypes: Academic, Doctor, Hunter, Occultist, Officer, Priest, Private Detective, Servant, Vagabond, Writer

Could your momento be tied into your dark secret?
Aug 4, 2020 1:14 pm
Squadfather44 says:
Could your momento be tied into your dark secret?
For sure. Or your Trauma. Or just general background. It's your call.
Aug 4, 2020 3:22 pm
I'd have a suggestion to make here, since our characters are supposed to know each other. What about having them (or just some of them) veterans of the various wars involving Norway in the early 19th, during the Napoleonic Wars ? They could have been members of the same battalion, for example, and deserted or left the army together afterwards.
I suggest this since I wanted to play a Military Surgeon (Doctor), and it seemed like Officer, Vagabond and even Hunter are Backgrounds that could kinda work with it.

Of course, I understand this would be quite limiting in some ways, so it's no a problem if you're interested by this at all.
Aug 4, 2020 3:28 pm
I am not against having had some military experience, bit we could also all be living in the same small town and gravitated to each other.
Aug 4, 2020 3:44 pm
I'm playing the officer, if you want we can tie our characters in like that.
Aug 4, 2020 4:00 pm
How about a Private Detective.

Will finish the rest as able today :)

THE PRIVATE DETECTIVE’S TALENTS
EAGLE EYE: You gain +2 to VIGILANCE when trying to interpret a situation you are not involved in.
ELEMENTARY: Once per session you can ask the Game master to explain how clues are connected.
FOCUSED: Ignore penalties from Conditions when making INVESTIGATION tests.
Aug 4, 2020 4:14 pm
I'm not sure Dag will fit that veteran idea because he is 25 years young and.... secrets....

I just added the memento roll above probably should have done new post

Which is the last thing I need before character submission

I'm not sure why I put the momentos in notes, but I'll keep doing so, haha
Aug 4, 2020 5:43 pm
That is all good with me. Character finished (obviously the Relationship aspect can't really be determined until we have a general background for everybody)

Do you want us to flesh out the Trauma/Dark Secrets much more than just that?
I don't require you to expand your backstories. In a longer game you'd probably get much more out of the game for doing so, but this is a one-shot.

Machiabelly says:

Both could work ofc, so it is as you wish !
Squadfather44 says:

That works perfectly for me ! We can discuss our common background and possibly trauma by DM if you want.
Windyridge says:

No problems, I understand perfectly.

CHIEF PHYSICIAN: When you use MEDICINE to treat the other player char-acters, they can heal a total of four Conditions in-stead of three. The same applies to extra successes.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE: Ignore mental Conditions when using MEDICINE.

As far as character portrait go, what time frame would you guys suggest looking up?
Aug 5, 2020 12:38 pm
Nineteenth century.

Also, Bowlofspinach won't be joining us. Once the last two characters are submitted, I'll review them and we can get started.
Aug 5, 2020 6:07 pm
I should have my character completed and submitted by tomorrow.
Aug 5, 2020 6:21 pm
I used 1850s hunter for my search
Aug 6, 2020 8:57 pm
Character sheet submitted, hope it's all good !
The only thing it lacks right now is the relationships with other characters, do we have a general idea for how the group formed as a whole ?
Aug 6, 2020 10:05 pm
As a group, we could just all be from a small town
We could add one or two others.
I did one with windyridge. I am open to suggestions
Aug 6, 2020 11:13 pm
I am pretty comfortable with the all from the same small town scenario.

My main thoughts are Anders is pretty amicable to working with other but doesn't like it when people act unprofessionally.
Aug 7, 2020 1:32 am
You can pick one of us and either be "impressed that they always seem to act professionally" or "unimpressed as you have heard they act unprofessionally"

I think I messed up on my Rescources. What's the starting value for an Officer?

Small town group is fine by me then !
Aug 7, 2020 2:46 pm
Okay, Squadfather44 submitted a character so we have the whole crew. As mentioned before, I'll check these today and start the game later on in the day.
Aug 7, 2020 2:47 pm
I am also fine with whatever the group decides. Dagmar is just a drifter but he does enjoy being liked even though he is quite an unsavory character.
Aug 7, 2020 3:40 pm
My general opinion on these type of corebook starting adventures is to go in with a thought of how my character is going to react and naturally get the relationships handled.

Since this is a one-shot opening module adventure, I don't think having predetermined relationships figured out is as important as the GM doesn't necessarily need to plan inter-personal conflict between us or ways to play on those relationships. Obviously that stuff can still be sprinkled in, but it is far less of a priority.
Aug 7, 2020 10:38 pm
Dagmar
- spend skill points (10)
- choose only one talent from the three
- record Resources 1 (plus any skill points allocated)

Trond
- Resources should be 2 I think

Eir
Looks good!

Anders
- Resources should be 2

Gregor
Also looks good!
Aug 7, 2020 10:46 pm
Hunter says resources 2-4. I went with the middle ground.

Quote:
Your Resources value indicates how much capital you have at your disposal. A higher value means that you enjoy a nicer home and lifestyle, and have easier access to things you need. The table on the next page shows the meaning of different values. In-game events that affect your living standard will change the value. Normally you start out with the lower value for your archetype. However, this can be raised by spending skill points – each point raises Resources by one step, although your starting value cannot exceed what is indicated in the archetype. Resources can only be raised with skill points before you start playing; once the game has begun you can only increase Resources by purchasing talents (see chapter 4).
Aug 7, 2020 11:09 pm
Oh man, I totally misunderstood that, so I fixed it on my sheet.
Aug 7, 2020 11:24 pm
Me too. Off to fix it.
