Kaiju Character Discussion

I thought that we were sort of toying around with us being "co-habitating" kaiju. We, although not explicitly "friends", live in a similar area of the island/have found that keeping each other around self serves our purpose. If it be for protection or other means.

We have a few different "habitats" that we live in however, I imagine the island is small enough that us being familiar with each other in a "oh yeah that is that cool kaiju nextdoor" kind of way works.

For ease of play, my assumption was that your characters are already familiar with each other and have operated as a sentai (pack) before. It’s partly how your characters have survived on Monster Island. Sorry, I should have clarified that.

But being a sentai doesn’t mean that you all necessarily like each other. It’s more that you’ve been forced by circumstances to work together on occasion. Your kaiju probably treat it as an arrangement of convenience. You cooperate with one another for the sake of mutual protection against more powerful kaiju that might prey on your characters separately. Other sentai exist on Monster Island, and they act like roving prison gangs of giant monsters that target the weaker residents of the Sanctuary. So as a survival strategy, it makes sense to form alliances and have backup.

The members of your sentai likely function as on-again off-again allies much in the same way as Godzilla and Mothra in the movies. You might genuinely like one another, or just tolerate each other in a sort of symbiotic relationship.

Yeah, I was thinking something along these lines! But Panghol's post seemed to me like he never saw Straj before. Maybe it wasn't intended, but it just made me doubt. XD

Yes, exactly. That’s what I’m imagining. Team ups are a recurring trope in the kaiju movies so there’s a precedent for it. But nothing’s stopping your characters from having a genuine bond of friendship, if that’s how you want to play it.

I feel like the balance between "generally solitary" and "knowing" each other is close.

Mothra and Godzilla don't start a team up with a high five or immediate cooperation, normally it is more like "I see you" then "we are both threatened by this chump over there" and finally "let us kick his butt together"

I feel like we are sort of in the "I see you"/ "look at this common threat" stage

But doesn't being a sentai kinda imply that we already defeated some threats together (even if only via intimidation)?

I'm not trying to say we are friends, but shouldn't we be more than "hey I saw you a few times around"? Like at least be familiar with each other on the level of "I don't think it's in your interests to attack me"/"we're kinda a pack, so you are unlikely to attack me, though I still don't trust you"? Then again, maybe it's too complex for kaiju...

Anyway, I just wanted to know if it was logical for Straj to think of the others as more safe than any non-sentai kaiju (even if not trust completely).

I think it is logical to think others are safer than others but I feel like in your eyes, the rest of us are essentially wild animals and you are a person. Our base instincts can get the better of us if something rubs us the wrong way.

Sure we are comfortable with each other in some ways and even worked with each other before but that doesn't have to mean we are chummy.

Think of a household that has a dog and a cat. The dog might want to play with the cat but the dog knows that what the cat does and doesn't like. Doesn't mean the cat hates the dog, cat is just more testy.

But using your analogy, the cat and the dog know each other better than any other random cat/dog. They might not be friendly, but they know each other's habits, what would prompt other to attack, what they eat.

I guess the question is, do our kaiju know each other like this? Would they be aware of Omukade wanting to find a save place to raise her young, or at least her habit of trying to make a den? Would they know of Panghol having a tunnel network, even if not its extent? Of Straj's quirk to touch things, Boiuna's protective streak towards nature? (Or rather would they know it if they deemed it worthy to remember.)

It isn't so much about being chummy as the level of them knowing each other.

(I'm not sure how I feel about person vs. wild animal comparison. I was going more for a very intelligent wild animal rather than completely human intelligence, but it is a whole different matter. XD)

But anyway, if we're going with co-habitation without actual prior interactions, I can just rewrite a few lines of my post. :D
...Or maybe some of us are more familiar with each other than others?

Just a reminder to everyone that all characters in Savage Worlds, by default, have the ability to swim. Unless you specifically selected the "Can't Swim" Hindrance, assume that your kaiju knows how to swim.

anyone else get disconcerted when you make a post that may lead to conflict and the GM makes more posts for his reference regarding Mech combat?

Just me? oh well :)

I tried to pretend there was no mech post. Because I don't want to think about the conflict of interest it will result in for my character. XD

...but do humans have mechs ready to go right here?

I guess I try and do a good job of separating my player known info and my character known info. There is something to be said, if Taclydus knew Panghol might be causing a good distraction I may have waited to see the result but decided to avoid that conflict.

If Straj knew what Panghol was doing, he'd probably help with distraction. Too bad that he doesn't have 360 vision and is too focused on humans. (And probably doesnt expect another kaiju to go distraction route?)

That's for potential future use, lol. Mecha have involved rules so I needed to post it all somewhere for ease of reference. Unfortunately, I don't know how to hide threads on Gamers Plane, or if that's even possible.

Your kaiju can probably expect some form of encounter with giant mecha if the KTF thinks your rampaging against human targets. When kaiju escape Monster Island, the KTF will usually deploy mecha if the kaiju is clearly headed to a populated area. However, pound for pound, the average assault mecha is smaller and weaker than a kaiju. Mecha typically need to operate as a unit to take down a kaiju.

I hid the mecha info with the notes function for now, just till I figure out the Admin permissions. Sorry for the nervousness, lol

lol well I am glad it wasn't essentially you dusting off an NPC character sheet you were like "well I didn't think I will need this yet"

but that would have been an extreme reaction I guess to me just "I attempt to fly over them" move :)
