A Sample Encounter

Mar 29, 2016 10:06 pm
The directions the old man at the tavern provided have proven terribly inaccurate. Cursing your luck, not to mention the loss of coin that the old coot's probably already spent on ale, you've spotted a small campfire in a clearing about 100 feet ahead. At least three small humanoid figures muddle about, occasionally checking on whatever meat it is they've spitted above the fire.
OOC:
It's late afternoon and you're all in a lightly wooded area. You're fairly sure the group around the fire is unaware of your presence.

Just for some fun before we get going - participate if you'd like or ignore this completely. :-) Even if your character isn't finished feel free to jump in.
Mar 29, 2016 10:10 pm
Morris meanders further down the trail making no attempt to be stealthy. Taking a look at the state of the fire Morris decides to gather a few more bits of this and that to throw on the fire before approaching.

"You mind if I join you? It's gonna be a cold one tonight I think."

Hmm those small figures seem familiar.
OOC:
Can I identify them with perception? And does favored for help?
Mar 30, 2016 1:51 am
OOC:
You can use a Perception Check to try and get some more details as to what these figures are. Alternatively you can use your 'Favored Enemy' feature to looks for signs to see if those figures may be Kobolds (you can rule out Orcs at this distance).

So, for a Perception Check, it's just a simple 1d20+Your Perception Skill bonus (+4) in your case.
Since your 'Favored Enemy' feature provides an Advantage on survival checks you could take two rolls 1d20+Your Survival Skill bonus (+4) and use the best result.

Tayleron checks for signs of the creatures in the area.
OOC:
Add 4 to both please

"Cold, yes indeed...it would be most appreciated if we could share your fire and company."
OOC:
What dice roll for this?

No dice roll needed for what you're doing so far.

Throwing all caution to the wind Thuron and Morris move on towards clearing, Morris occasionally stopping to gather some more fuel for the fire. Tayleron, however, decides to search his immediate surroundings for clues and quickly picks up a fresh trail.
OOC:
I've sent each of you a private note (which should appear in this post, let me know if you don't see it). I use these from time to time to let individual characters in on things only they would know. I'm using them now as more of a test than anything.

OOC:
How far ahead are the other two?
Tayleron knocks an arrow on his bow. He silently pulls it to a full draw. And looses the deadly rain.
OOC:
I would like to shoot between Turon and Morris if possible.
"'Ware you fools, they be goblins ahead!"

Rolls

Shooting arrow - (1d20+5)

(15) + 5 = 20

OOC:
ooc: a little late hope it's OK to jump in.
Martel jogs towards his companions planning to turn them around. He is sure now the old man had meant them to turn left at the tree with a spiraling trunk.

He arrives just in time to see Tayleron loose his arrow and shout his warning. Martel draws his Lance and prepares to charge.
OOC:
do I need to wait for initiatives at this point or can I make a dash and attack roll?

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+2)

(2) + 2 = 4

Mar 31, 2016 2:33 am
Tayleron's arrow flies true. The audible 'woosh' above Morris' and Thuron's heads is their first sign that something may be amiss; the arrow striking one of the little creatures squarely in the shoulder is the second. With a hurried yelp the wounded goblin calls out to his companions who quickly toss aside whatever they had been eating and reach for their spears.
OOC:
At this point Morris and Thuron have actions that they can take based on their earlier actions. With a dash action Martel can just get close enough to the already wounded goblin and try to run him through. As part of your posts go ahead and add an initiative roll (1d20+DEX modifier).

Current bad guy status. I won't be showing this in the actual game thread, this is just for our example here.
Gobo 1 - 4/8
Gobo 2 - 8/8
Gobo 3 - 8/8
Gobo 4 - 8/8

Rolls

Goblin Group Initiative - (1d20+2)

(10) + 2 = 12

Mar 31, 2016 7:18 am
Tayleron watches his arrow fly true, striking the goblin in the shoulder. He glimpses Martel charging past out of the corner of his eye. He quickly pulls another arrow out and let's fly again.

Rolls

Initiative - (1d20+3)

(12) + 3 = 15

Shooting arrow - (1d20+5)

(20) + 5 = 25

Arrow damage - (1d8+3)

(1) + 3 = 4

Mar 31, 2016 5:00 pm
"No good intention, eh?" Morris curses his trusting nature, reminding himself of the parable of the Scorpion and the Fox. He grabs a bit of brambleberry vine from his pouch, pierces his thumb on the pricker and throws if at the nearest goblin.
OOC:
Morris casts Thornwhip

Rolls

Melee Spell attack (+2 prof, +2 Wis) - (1d20+4)

(19) + 4 = 23

Damage from Thornwhip (if successful) - (1d6)

(5) = 5

Mar 31, 2016 5:42 pm
Thuron dodges toward the woods and extends his hand toward the Goblins
OOC:
Thuron conjurs Firebolt and hurls it at a third (undamaged) goblin
Last edited March 31, 2016 5:45 pm

Rolls

Firebolt cantrip - (1d20+4)

(14) + 4 = 18

Damage from Firebolt - if applicable - (1d10)

(6) = 6

Initiative - (1d20)

(3) = 3

Watching as the goblins start to gather their weapons Morris and Thuron jump into action.

Morris produces a bit of vine and with a flick of his wrist a green whip grabs the nearest goblin and wrenches it forward toward the little druid. Looking back for support as he's slowly being pulled in he sees a flash of fire streak out and hit one of his companions directly in the chest.

Couple Notes:
Tayleron will start the second round with a critical hit on his target. When you score a critical hit you get to roll your damage die a second time (without modifiers).
Thuron's spell attack bonus is +5. For a Wizard if your proficiency bonus + your intelligence modifier.
Also, try and get into practice posting as your character in the game threads. Easier for me to get to your sheets to check on things and it just looks cooler.

OOC:
Martel still has an option for an initial action before the second round starts.
Still need an initiative roll from Morris.

Order for round 2 will be:
Tayleron - Who will critical hit Gobo 1 to death based on his above attack
Goblins -
Martel, GamerDad -

Gobo 1 - 4/8: Being peppered with Tayleron's arrows.
Gobo 2 - 3/8: 15' from Morris
Gobo 3 - 2/8: 60' from Thuron
Gobo 4 - 8/8
Apr 1, 2016 5:05 am
Martel charges past Tayleron extending his lance to land a heavy strike as he has done so many times before. As a fireball flies past he decides to follow and finish of its mark.

Roaring out Hakka Paalle! as he barrels forward.

Rolls

Attack roll - (1d20+5)

(13) + 5 = 18

Damage roll - (1d12+3)

(7) + 3 = 10

End of surprise round:
Following the trail left by Thuron's fire bolt, Martel rushes forward screaming his old squadron's battle cry. The goblin, still reeling (and still smoldering), never sees the lance until it has run him through.
OOC:
1,000,000 style points for the Finnish Cavalry battle cry!
Start of Round 2:
Watching as his initial target struggles to yank the protruding arrow from his shoulder, Tayleron launches another arrow, this one striking the little beast in the face, instantly dropping him to the ground.

The goblin facing Morris finally breaks free of the magical whip. Having seen two of his comrades fall he decides that it's time to make a break for it. Launching his spear at the little druid the goblin turns tail and runs. Seeing the incoming spear Morris is just able to move aside to avoid taking the brunt of the attack, but the blade still manages to make a nice gash on his thigh. [3HP damage to Morris]

The fourth goblin screams out a cry of his own as he charges in at Martel who has just removed one of the creatures from his lance. Spear leading the way the goblin is able to find the seam in Martel's armor and the blade cuts in between two of his ribs. [7HP damage to Martel]
OOC:
Upcoming actions:

Round 2
- Morris, Thuron, and Martel (in any order)

Round 3
- Tayleron (assuming there are any goblins left).
- Goblins

Gobo 2 - 3/8: 45' from Morris and running for the hills.
Gobo 3 - 0/8: KIA - Cooked and then spitted on a lance

1d20+4 : (12) + 4 = 16

1d6+2 : (5) + 2 = 7

Apr 3, 2016 8:52 pm
Reeling from the deep cut of the goblins spear, Martel lashes out with his lance in retaliation. Forgetting in his pain that at close quarters the lance is unwieldy.

Ahg, cut this little vermin down!
OOC:
I have already forgotten what my + is on attack rolls is it proficiency and strength? If so and additional +3 on those rolls
