I'm not sure how to handle characters. You should all be strangers on a bus. There will be other passengers too, I don't want you to know who's who yet. Send me your characters privately I guess, PM or note, I'll make copies and I'll make a character forum when you start tio meet each other
That sounds like an interesting challenge, but
1. Make a game forum
2. Invite the players
3. Ask the players NOT to submit their characters yet, but to send the GM a copy

But do NOT ask us to invest energy in character creation, just to be told that we can not play in a full game. It will not win you any friends

Yeah what runekyndig said -- just note character sheets submitted to the game are only viewable by the GM and the player that submitted it so no issue with others knowing anything about another character via that method

That is not entirely true. If you go into Characters>All characters and click the gray book so it becomes red the character sheet is visible for all.

Yeah okay if you change the basic default status which is not something someone new to the forum would do you can change the default status of not being able to be seen --- further the players can make the character sheet public as well -- so yeah there are ways beyond the default system to make a character sheet public for others to see

But by delaying the character submit, the other players cant my character on the character list and guess that my character is Mightymouse.
But I guess that our actions will be posted in secret notes to the GM and the GM will then copy/paste and add the NPC's action, just to keep us guessing who is playing Mightymouse or if he is a NPC

Well it would be a shame to have someone role playing and using meta game knowledge but I suppose it happens but it is not something I do I always consider only what my character actually knows versus what I know when determining their actions which makes these -- a bunch of strangers meet in a pub and decide to trust each other to the point of risking their lives and going on an adventure with them -- not work very well. As my characters (unless designed that way) will never trust someone out of the gate to that degree. But I have seen players do that - basically trust someone just because their are supposed to be a PC ... and as a GM I have used that from time to time against them -- of course I do the flip-side of that as well not every NPC is untrustworthy but if you treat them as such they will leave and you lose that benefit. Basically I try to teach players to treat a PC and an NPC just like they were normal people rather than with some pre-meta-gamed view. So if Mighty Mouse was a potential PC played by you, I would treat them no differently than a Mighty Mouse that was an NPC and I would hope the rest of the players were of a higher caliber role player to not use Meta Game Knowledge

Then of course because as a GM I want to facilitate the game, I try to create relationships between the characters that gives them a solid reason to trust someone such as maybe A knows B and C is B's sister and D is known by C etc... Thus everyone has a solid connection to the group as a whole and a reason to trust at least someone within the group that they would be willing to risk their life for in such an endeavor. Yeah a bit more work on the GM side but it helps the game start off more organically as well as add dynamics down the road that would otherwise not ever have existed

send me a private character sheet (as best you can) and if there's enough interest and we can put a party together, it's a go.

Don't share any of your character ideas with other players yet. The story starts with a group of complete strangers

we have a captain, and an engineer. We need

pilot
science officer
gunner
gunner

don't tell us what you want just yet, make a character that would fill the roll well, and let me know privately.

no no no.

I just want the characters to be strangers on a bus. The story will cause them to meet and then all will be revealed. If everything is revealed at first, the opening scenes will be a bit of a bore. But not knowing who's who will help. I did this at a IRL game once and it really worked well. I'm not sure it will translate to PbP, but I'm gonna give it a go

Interesting you have not actually started this game and you have a NPC/PC? captain, an NPC engineer, NPC/PC? pilot, so when are you going to officially start the game and let us know who you have accepted and who you have not accepted??

Again all we (some of us anyway) are asking is a commitment from you the GM as to who is in the game prior to investing time and energy into a character -- I have met many a GM who has had more players than they wanted and then after everyone had invested several hours into creating a 2D character the GM told some of them they could not play in the game. As such I do not invest energy into a Character until I have a commitment from the GM. Then it would nice if that GM was able to help make the 2D character more 3D

Frankly, I'm kind of on the opposite side of that argument - reviewing at least character concepts if not character sheets not only prevents first-come, first-served games where the people who check the forum every 15 minutes get the jump on slots, but lets the GM build and tailor the group based on the best or most interesting submissions.

Applying to games and being accepted and rejected after submitting a concept or even after complete chargen is the way I've seen it done on most other sites I've been a part of.

Sorry folks, I got suddenly swamped at work, for a new project - withdrawing my participation, have fun!

ah, I get it now.

I don't need a fully fleshed out character yet. Let's just start with interest. So far I have strong interest from 3 players who have PM'ed me, and one NPC.

I don't have a problem with two people who want to be pilots, that's life. I'm just trying to prevent people from spilling the beans about their character ideas in this public forum.

It's a tricky thing to balance, but I've already invested lot's of hours, and dollars, in the rule books....

The following is basically off-topic for this thread please do not read unless the concept is of some interest to you.
[ +- ] Yes GreyGriffin I have seen that too

In the interests of not hijacking the thread, I'll just say I disagree on pretty much every point there, and don't think what's being asked is fundamentally unreasonable.

What is the status of this game? It it happening?

Haha, one wonders how that came about. Was there an old Romani woman involved, was she blamed for cutting the cheese when you walked by? Big mistake!
