OOC:
My apologies. I was certain that my previous post was this morning. See how confused you get when you get to be my age. Perhaps I checked in this morning before anyone else had posted and, seeing nothing, went away without posting anything.

Angel gathers Sister Alice's gear, stows it where ever he can find room on his person and begins to lift his friend from the ground. "Why is it always the strongest players are the first to get chewed up." He speaks to no one in particular.
OOC:
Angel only has a strength of 7.

"Because they are the ones foolish enough to fight these horrid beasts with metal sticks and hope for the best," Eltrezar retorts as he struggles to move Alice.
OOC:
In regards to the pacing, I think some of us were speeding up a bit due to the anticipation. Prior to the fight, I was trying to limit my posting here. In regards to the strength, samesies!

Gilly will give the room a once over, and then, seeing the other struggle, will help them carry Alice out to the courtyard.
OOC:
Str 14. Gilly could wrestle both Angel and Elt into submission at the same time? :D

Examining the room quickly, Gilly can tell that this partially collapsed chamber, contains the remains of cots and plain wooden chests, indicating that this was once a barracks room for castle guards—undoubtedly the human sort.

In the southern corner of the room a chest sits closed.

@Aldruisian: By the way, having fired one of the nicer looking arrows to put the Giant Lizard down, Angel realizes these are +1 arrows. They don't seem to have any magical properties, but are simply well-fletched arrows.

Gilly gives the box a once over, as she saw Angel doing earlier. And having been tasked with checking for stuff, and seeing the other two begin to leave the room with the body, she will open it quickly to see if it’s worth taking before hurrying out after the others!

Gilly opens the chest, which contains the following items:
•33cp
•a chainmail tunic
•a light crossbow
•a case of 24 quarrels.

Gilly will scamper out of the room with the chest, passing it off to Angel when she catches up and picking up Alice in his stead.

Gilly helps lay her down in the courtyard, while the party compose themselves, and gather up everything before departing. Gilly can’t look at Alice’s ruined face and head. The tears come fast. She crosses Alice’s arms across her chest, and places her holy symbol in her hands. She covers Alice’s head with some cloth from the keep.

Having tended to the body, she will slip away for a moment down the other passage, and she will cry.

Eltrezar will (with great effort) put Alice up on one of the horses. It would be a long ride back to town, given the number of steeds to manage, but it needed to be done. As Gilly disappears for a period, the wizard sighs and prepares the horses for travel.

Gilly gilly retreats to the other corridor, which runs south, to give herself some time to grieve Alice's death while Eltrezar struggles to wrestle the heavily armored cleric's body on top of a horse in preparation to leave. Meanwhile Elmo and Angel are working at getting the loot they collected fastened to the horses. The wizard's grunts and curses echo through the castle.

As everything is finally leaded and Gilly is getting herself collected again, she senses a movement on her peripheral view and glances over to look at the open room at the end of the hallway, which she believes is the room where the smaller, halfling-sized hole in the castle's southeast corner wall was located. As she looks, she sees nothing out of the ordinary. But then she glances to the hallway's floor where she can see the distinct evidence of boot prints and something heavy being dragged down the hallway in the dust that has settled in the ruins.

Not seeing Gilly anywhere in the large entryway, Angel begins to look for her. This is only after all the treasure and Alice are affixed to horses. It only takes a moment for him to find her up the stairs and around the corner. Since she seems to be examining something he will stay quiet until she lifts her head.

Composing herself upon seeing the tracks, Gilly will quietly arm herself with her bow and ready an arrow. She will creep after the trail as quietly as possible, and investigate, peeking her head into the room. She’s ready to bolt at any sign of attack.

Gilly walks to the end of the hallway and peeks her head around the corner. In the southeasternmost corner of the room a small hole appears from the collapsed moathouse wall, resulting in a pile of rubble leading down to the moat below. The hole is small enough for Gilly to squeeze through, but it's doubtful the rest of the party could.
In the east side of the room the arrow slot, typically used by archers defending the castle from attackers outside, is cluttered with debris, including a number of unidentifiable bones. A foul odor seems to be emanating from the debris.
In the southwest corner lies what appears at first to be two humanoid-shaped bundles, wrapped up in a spider's cocoon, sitting on the floor. They appear to be dead inside but as Gilly watches them further she notices one then the other squirming slightly, as if struggling to get free. As well, there appears to be faint muffled noises coming from the cocoons, and as he eyes adjust to the dim light of this room she realizes they're not wrapped in spiders' silk after all, but bound tightly in rope...

Gilly takes a step back, instinctively, when she thinks he’s about to encounter a spider. But then it dawns on her that it’s simply rope. Prisoners kept here by the bandits previously dispatched. She sneaks up to one of the bundles, drawing her short sword.

"Hello?... Hello? Can you hear me? My name is Gilly Puddlefoot..." she begins about the work of cutting the bundles loose. "... adventurer! I’m here to rescue you!"

OOC:
Gosh darn it, Gilly... *Sigh... Let me get to the office in an hour or so, roll some dice, and then I'll update this post.
Gilly approaches the bundles, and begins cutting at the ropes of one of them when suddenly a lightning quick flash of white darts out from between the bundles and lunges for her extended sword arm! Gilly's instincts are sharp and she gets the arm back in time, only to look down again and see a tightly coiled adder ready for another strike. The snake is huge, probably over a dozen feet in length if stretched out, and while it doesn't seem large enough to capable of eating either of the trussed up bundles, it could probably swallow a halfling. Why it was peacefully curled up between the two bodies isn't clear, but Gilly's first though is it may have been sleeping, trying to warm itself against their body heat.
The giant snake gives Gilly a threatening hiss to warn her to back off, showing two huge fangs both dripping with a viscous, deadly-looking venom and she realizes that a strike from this animal could prove to be a quick end to her life indeed. The sound of it's warning carries through the castle ruins to the great hall beyond.
OOC:
The Giant Snake's Surprise Round is ended! Round 1 begins! Turn order is as follows:
-->1. Gilly (7)
2. Giant Snake (4)
3. Angel (3)
4. Eltrezar (1)
5. 2. Elmo (6, 2-handed)

The module describes this snake as "A huge adder, over 12 feet long..." That's definitely bigger than a human, so for this combat Gilly gets her -2 AC bonus for larger than human enemies and will have a AC of "2" instead of her usual "4".
I tried to make it pretty evident in the post above but I cannot stress how deadly this animal is if you get bitten. Should it successfully bite you immediately take bite damage. Furthermore, you must make a Save vs Poison roll at the start of your next round in addition to any actions you make. I failed roll does a severe amount of poison damage. A successful roll does a dangerous amount of poison damage. Engage in melee with it at your own extreme risk.

It's good that I have the lowest initiative, because I'm heading out to the mountains now. If it comes to my turn, Eltrezar would likely run towards the noise (and his companions) and throw a dagger at the snake (if he can even get in position to see it, AND in range to throw a dagger).

Jan 16, 2021 6:51 pm
At the sound of Gilly speaking Angel walks forward and is near the door when he hears a loud hissing. He instinctively knocks another arrow (a common one) and steps into the room, X25.
OOC:
I assume that the elapsed time from when Gilly speaks to when the adder makes it's unsuccessful attack is a surprise round. Angel would have reached the door by the end of that period.
"Step slowly out of the way, Gilly so I can get a shot at it."
OOC:
I will wait until Gilly takes her action before I roll for any attack
