I specifically searched for a PbP site in Google a few years ago when I found GamersPlane. Back then, I looked through a few of the more popular ones, but most of them intimidated me with their large userbases and high standards for writing (or at least high standards I suspected that they had). Not to say GP doesn't have standards, but it just looked more approachable! Plus, it had a nice design, and after scouting through the forums I liked the community I saw.
I much prefer smaller sites over bigger ones because otherwise I start feeling anxious over fitting in with an established userbase. But here I will eventually get to know some players, and thus will feel more comfortable around them! :D I certainly didn't regret joining, and it's still the only site I use.
As for Discord, same deal - can't interact with too many people at once. And chats make it harder for me to respond because they don't offer an option to ponder for a while over your words (even if they do, the time pressure's still here). Plus, Discord isn't very good for organizing things. Though ability to add a lot of bots for rolls and such is nice. :)
