VikingVictus Character Discussions

Jan 4, 2021 8:40 pm
This thread is for discussing VikingVictus's character please do not post anything here that is not related to VikingVictus's character and yes collaborating with VikingVictus is consider fair postings.

Please make all rolls in here and outline what you are are doing so that I can give you feedback on the world. Do note though this game borrows heavily from the Forgotten Realms so you can use information from that setting to outline your background.

I'm considering a Barbarian, but I take it that Wild Magic Barbarian isn't allowed since it's from TaCoE?

Okay well conceptually within the Forgotten Realms magic and barbarians is like oil and water, they do not mix well.

Barbarians are more likely to be a Shaman (cleric or druid) and more uncommonly perhaps a Witch Doctor (warlock) but no a normal Barbarian (aka the class) would not gain wild magic since until after the Spell Plague which has not happened in this version of the Forgotten Realms there were no known wild magic zones.

Further glancing at that class variant I am not sure it is even balanced, Misty Step is a 2nd Level spell and one of their abilities is to use that spell effect like it was a cantrip. So if I did allow it I would probably have to seriously nerf it.

Ok that's not a problem, I'm not massively familiar with FR lore since most of the games I've played in so far are original worlds/homebrews. I'll stick with a Spirit Totem Barbarian if that's the case :)

I'm going to play a half-orc so with racial modifiers applied:

STR -18 (+2 racial) = 20
DEX - 15
CON - 17 (+1 racial) = 18
INT - 12
WIS - 14
CHA - 14

HP @ Lvl 1: 12 + 4 = 16

Lvl 2: 3 + 8 + 4 = 15

Lvl 3: 3 + 8 + 4 = 15

Total HP: 46

Okay so a Uriak Barbarian ??
Jan 11, 2021 5:16 pm
What's a Uriak, is that a term for a Half-Orc?

Sorry if it's a stupid question but I'm not very familiar with most of the lore, especially around things I haven't played before.

Since I'm new to PbP I'm just trying to keep things pretty simple character and mechanics-wise.

I'll be taking the Outlander background.

Rolling for wealth: 30 Gold

Rolls

starting wealth - (2d4)

(21) = 3

Jan 11, 2021 6:16 pm
Rolling for wealth ?? -- You get all your Class Equipment -- All your Background Equipment -- which you can sell at book price of what you do not want -- then you get an additional 750 gp which you need to spend as you can only enter the game with a max of 10 gp in your pocket
Jan 12, 2021 9:14 am
Yes, based on the "Starting Wealth by Class" table on pg 143 of the Players handbook barbarians at Lvl 1 start with 2d4 x 10 gp

Then the Outlander background gives 10gp, so that means at Lvl 1 my character would start with 40gp and starting equipment.

I don't mind if you want that just to be included as part of the 750gp, I was just going through the PHB to gen my character's stuff at Lvl 1 then applying the rest as if its gained after character creation but if it's just starting equipment + 10gp from my background + 750gp to spend that's cool too :)

I'm looking for the costs of the consumable magic items, where can I find them? I'm assuming its consumables only and no permanent ones?
Jan 12, 2021 5:14 pm
Okay based on the normal guidelines (which I have not changed) -- you get 1 of 2 things:

1) Starting Gear for your Class and Starting Gear for your background
--or--
2) You randomly roll your wealth

All things considered though, you generally get more going with option 1

As for consumables that is correct just post the consumables you are wanting but the basic minimum cost is 50gp and it goes up from there.
Jan 13, 2021 10:09 am
Ah, yes! I missed that bit that says it's an either/or thing :)

So with the Outlander background that would give me 760 gp right?

So far I've bought:

Shield - 10gp
Net - 1gp
Block & Tackle - 1gp
5 bags of Caltrops - 5gp
12 candles - 12cp
15 pieces of chalk - 15cp
Climbers Kit - 25gp
Crowbar - 2gp
Fishing Tackle - 1gp
Grappling Hook - 2gp
2 x Healer's Kit - 10gp
Manacles - 2gp
Steel Mirror - 5gp
4 x Flask of Oil - 4sp
Portable Ram - 4gp
Shovel - 2gp
Soap - 2cp
4 extra Waterskin - 8sp
Whetstone - 1cp
3 x Potion of Healing - 150gp
10 x pitons
Iron Pot - 2gp
20ft of Chain - 10gp

I'll also buy a Mule to carry some of my larger items/loot so with it's saddlebags, a chest and 10 days feed that will be another 17gp

Leaving me with 4gp

I know it's a lot but spend it or lose it right! ;)
Jan 13, 2021 1:21 pm
Okay yes if you use the random gold generation you get 10gp but if you use the Class and Background gear -- that you can sell what you do not want -- you get a way lot more than just 10gp

Next I take it you did not read the expanded guidelines on weapons and armor especially the part about special materials and masterwork items -- you might want to look that over -- lastly we are using the alternate version for carrying capacity and at a glance I think you would be struggling to have a light load (optimum for adventurering)
Jan 13, 2021 4:21 pm
There might be some confusion here, the 10gp is from the items given by the Outlander background, not the rolled wealth so I'm working on the assumption that its basic starting equipment for my class, +10gp from the outlander background + 750gp spending money.

I'll take a look at the weapons and armour guidelines and rework my items.

As for carrying capacity I'm not planning on carrying all of the equipment on my person, hence the mule, saddlebags and chest to allow the character themselves to travel reasonably lightly. This may all change after I work out my new weapons and armour though as it may be redundant. :)
Jan 13, 2021 4:43 pm
Sorry yes -- the Outlander gives a bit more than just 10gp though (and you happened to roll 10gp) which is where my confusion resided.

Also please choose your Background based on your character concept theme as I am working on all the Backgrounds to give them all useful features much like those that the Outlander gets (which I agree by far is THE MOST beneficial Background thus the changes I am making)
Jan 13, 2021 5:17 pm
Ok, so attempt number 2!

Starting Gold: 760gp

Firstly I'll sell my Greataxe and Handaxes for +40gp

New total 790gp

- Spiked Large Roundshield - 13gp - 7lbs
- Masterwork Battleaxe (+2 Atk, +2 Dmg) - 200gp - 4lbs
- 2x Masterwork Hatchets (+1 Dmg) - 50gp - 4lbs
- 2x Nets - 2gp - 6lbs
- 5 bags of Caltrops - 5gp - 10lbs
- Climbers Kit - 25gp - 12lbs
- Crowbar - 2gp - 5lbs
- 2x Healer's Kit - 10gp - 6lbs
- Manacles - 2gp - 6lbs
- 10x Flasks of Oil - 1gp - 10lbs
- Portable Ram - 4gp - 35lbs
- Shovel - 2gp - 5lbs
- 5x extra Waterskins - 1gp
- Fishing Tackle - 1gp - 4lbs
- Block & Tackle - 1gp - 5lbs
- 8x potions of healing - 400gp - 5lbs
- Steel Mirror - 5gp - 0.5lbs
- 10x Candles - 1sp
- 10 x Chalk - 1sp
- Mule - 8gp
- Bit & Bridle - 2gp
- Large Pack - 30gp
- 10 days feed for the mule - 5gp
- 100ft Silken rope - 20gp - 10lbs

That should leave me with 9gp 8sp

I already have a Backpack, so between that and the Mule's packs I should be able to split my items reasonably to avoid being overly encumbered right? I know its a lot of stuff, but I kind of want my character to be a bit of a survivalist and practically minded. Also after buying the best Axe and shield I wanted I was struggling to find any other combat based equipment!
