Episode 1 Scene 1 : The Arrival

OOC:
This is for aquafina, dankel and Mike - your three characters have been with this caravan for well over 2 weeks and have fought along side one another. During that time the three of them became friends and decided to join forces and be an adventuring group
The trip to Far Reach was long and fraught with peril. On more than one occasion those being employed to protect the caravan definitely earned their keep be it wages at journeys end or safer passage to Boareskyr Bridge. However the last leg of the journey proved to be the worst. For upon the constantly wind swept fields of the Sky Plateau the group was set upon by a large contingency of raiders. It took a massive effort upon the protectors behalf to finally repel them leaving many badly wounded and a few dead. Still the caravan was able to make the safety of Titan's Cleave. It was rumored that a Titan's Great Sword had created the break in the Sky Plateau and it appeared that the rumor may have well been true for it resembled a jagged gaping wound. Still from there forward the most dangerous element was just the occasional falling rock as the caravan descended down through Titan's Cleave into the valley of Far Reach.

As the caravan begins moving out of the Cleave and into the valley proper one could see the fabled Boareskyr Bridge in the distance and next it the rather ramshackle town that rests at its southern end. The warmth of the valley was quite noticeable compared to the colder air of the Sky Plateau and one could imagine that at times it might actually get to be uncomfortably warm. Still the weather in the valley seemed to be pleasant enough right now and the grassy hills the caravan travels through seems peaceful enough. One could easily tell when one was getting close to the village as even a few farmhouses had already sprung up indicating that some protection was being given to the region immediately south of the village.

Upon arrival just short of the town but in sight of the large wooden sign labeled "Southbridge Village", for those who can read, the caravan pauses for inspection. A small contingency of archers flank the caravan on either side while four seasoned looking veterans walk the length of the caravan two to a side and a fifth with a writing board speaks with the caravan master up front. Their surcoats over their chain mail denote them as followers of different deities. The one up front who is obviously a well-groomed Tiefling wears an equally fine surcoat of Kelemvor while one of the walkers who is obviously a Dragonborn wears the surcoat of Bahamut, next to him is a Human wearing the surcoat of Torm, on the other side is an Elf wearing the surcoat of Correllon and along side him a fFolk wearing the surcoat of Lathander. While a mixed group of deities even the most unknowledgeable in religion would easily note that they are all deities associated with law and order. Perhaps these were some of the actual seven Paladins that are rumored to be the anchor of government and safety here.

On their walk back up from the rear of the caravan the Dragonborn states in Humanish in a deep booming voice that is easily heard by all. "We here welcome you all to Southbridge Village. Please refrain from excessive rowdiness as that may get you a visit to our wonderful stockade. If any of you are planning to stay on please report to the garrison in the next few days as all long term residents are expected to actively help with the defenses of the village. Other than that we hope you enjoy your stay here in Southbridge Village."
OOC:
If any of you wish to explore the village let me know otherwise we can assume the three have agreed to go to the garrison straight away upon arrival to hopefully be the first from this caravan so they can get the best potential assignments or maybe word of someone looking for some adventurers to solve a problem for them. Of course, if your character has any questions they wish to pose to someone feel free to do that as well.

For the entire ride, Quincy has been nice and polite to his fellow travelers, if not a little quiet. He tells his travel companions about his time studying and training at the House of the Hand, and his receiving of his expertly crafted spear, made specifically for him by his mentor. On subjects such as family or reasons for traveling to Far Reach, he becomes a bit quieter and more recluse, respectfully declining to share much.

He spends a short time every morning and every evening meditating and reviewing a few pieces of parchment which detail prayers to Torm and notes from his time at the monastery. And he spends most of the ride on the caravan pouring over maps he has of different regions, and creating a new one as they go along, closing his eyes and slowing his breathing every time the wagon lurches and an ink mark gets smudged or a drop of water plops onto the parchment. He looks in amazement at the Titan's Cleave and Boareskyr Bridge, and immediately begins mapping them out and drawing them with his tools, making little notes and observations on the side.

He is friendly-faced with all the guards that meet them, but gives a nod of extra respect and appreciation towards the human donning the symbol of Torm. After arriving in the small town, he turns to Corwyn and Magnus, "Well, compatriots, shall we head on to the garrison?"
Jan 16, 2021 2:07 pm
Magnus nods approvingly to the Dragonborn and turning to Quincy says "Yes, I agree, we can look round the village another time"
Reflecting on his journey Magnus is thankful to Torm for their safe arrival and is pleased to have fallen in with good company, both Corywn and the slightly enigmatic Quincy seem like good people to have at your side in a tight situation.
"The valley looks beautiful and peaceful, if we can do some good here by protecting people then the journey will have been worth it"

Corwyn has been admiring the scenery on the approach to the village and making a mental note of the lie of the land, adding to his knowledge of different lands. He smiles in response to the dragonborn paladin's greeting.
"Sounds good - the garrison it is," he replies to Quincy and Magnus, "let's see what use they might have for us - and our varied skills."

It does not take the group long to enter through the ramshackle looking gate. Although, up close one can obviously see that the gates and the wall are actually quite sturdy they just appear to be shoddy due to their non-uniform lengths. Still the gates are not the first thing one notices as they get near as an odor wafts out to greet them first. The strong scent of animals, manure, cooking, campfire smoke, and earth all mix together creating a none civilized smell that while pungent is not necessarily unpleasant, especially for those who prefer outdoor living versus city living. The dirt packed streets are lined with make-shift board walks making it obvious that when the streets get wet they might not be easily navigable. The semi-sea of kaleidoscopic tents seem to make up the bulk of the interior accompanied by the din of the marketplace that they represent. Off in the distance rising above these tents like majestic wooden towers stand five wooden structures the signs hanging from them, due to their shape as they are too far away to make out clearly, indicating that they were Inns. The fact that these flat roofed structures actually stand taller than the walls lends to the sense that perhaps they are even used as towers when needed. The road stretches out in front of them as well as going off to the right and there is a well worn path off to the left that seems to lead to one of the Inns. There is an Inn to their left and one to their right, another further down and to their left, and yet another even further down and to their left, the last appears to be directly across the near center of the central marketplace. Several guards stand just inside the gate holding halberds and then of course the various vendors and customers of the marketplace are milling about near by. However, there is no obvious sign that says this way to the garrison.

Corwyn approaches one of the guards. "Excuse me - we have just arrived and have been told to report to the garrison. Could you give us directions to the garrison please?"
Jan 19, 2021 2:51 am
The guards watch and tense a bit as Corwyn approaches as if perhaps anticipating violence. At his question though the guards relax a bit and the one guard replies, "Take the road to the right it will take you straight there."
Jan 19, 2021 8:21 am
"Thanks," he responds with a smile and strides off in the direction the guard indicated.

The group continues down the dirt packed road towards the Fort drawing curious looks from time to time and it becomes fairly obvious that the village is veritable mixing pot of races and nations. Further the market place mostly off to their left is a bustling maze of commerce in constant action. Meanwhile, travel via the main streets within the village seems pretty easy as there appears to be only three. One that goes from the south gate to the north gate, one that comes off that road near the south gate and heads almost straight to the Fort and then another that goes from the Fort back to that road connecting with it near the north gate. However once you get off a main road the tents appear to be a haphazard maze of narrow walkways interspersed with small open areas where a tent once stood.

The group eventually arrives at a bridge that separates the village from the fort. The bridge itself which looks rather crude turns out to be very stable and probably capable of handling a pretty heavy load before even complaining. Upon reaching the guard post located on the village side of the bridge the group is stopped as one of the guards steps forward, "Please state the nature of you business here?"

"Greetings. We have just arrived with the caravan that came in. We were told to report to the garrison if we were planning to stay for a while," he replies.

"Ah okay well you will need to check all your weapons with him," he points off to his right where a man sits at a small table with book. "Then we search you to make sure you are not holding out. Then we check you and if everything checks out we escort you in. Fairly routine procedure."
Jan 19, 2021 11:37 pm
"Fair enough." He walks over to the man with the book, gives his name and hands in all the weapons listed in his character sheet, including the hunting knife, handaxe, spare bundle of arrows and razor. He then stands with his arms apart, submitting to the search.
Jan 19, 2021 11:47 pm
"Of course." Quincy replies, "May you find peace." he says with a slight bow to the guard. He follows Corwyn over to the next guard with the book. He gladly hands over his darts, but hesitates for only but a moment in handing over his spear. It is his most prized possession. Of course, material possessions shouldn't hold too much sway over a person of his background and philosophy, but this weapon is special. A relic of a treasured person, who Quincy will not be able to see until he crosses over into the next life, guided by the hands of Torm the True. But nevertheless, he hands over the spear to be checked, then follows suit in submitting to the search.

OOC:
Okay hopefully we have not lost dankel but I will assume their character complies
The man at the table takes the character's name makes a few notes then records the items being surrendered which are then carefully gathered by another guard and placed in a box or in a tall urn. Once all the weapons are turned over and each person is respectfully checked for any hidden weapons another guard steps up and says, "Left hand please," he demonstrates by holding out his left hand palm up. Upon compliance he places a small orb into the palm of your hand. Corwyn being first the orb glows a soft blue and the guards says, "Divine caster." Then while another guard approaches Corwyn holding out a dark metal short bracer saying, "Left wrist please." the guard with the orb moves to Quincy and repeats his statement but this time the orb glows a soft yellow. The guard pauses a moment then says, "Okay hold off the bracer we have a Chi user, you three will have to wait for one of the Paladins to return. Please step back over there." He points to a spot a few feet away and a five guards surround the group.
Jan 25, 2021 10:23 pm
After a little while the one of the paladins, the one that spoke out earlier, can be seen coming down the road. As he arrives he asks, "What is with those three?" He motions towards the group.

The guard responds, "A Chi user sir"

The Dragonborn glances over to the group, "Alright you three with me." he says then looks back to the guard and says, "Standard protocols."

The guard responds, "Yes sir."

The Dragonborn leads the group across the bridge's expanse below it is just cliffs and dark water. The group is followed by five guards. On the opposite side is a wooden palisade with a gate that is about half the height of the Forts 30 foot walls that encloses the area directly in front of the gatehouse itself. The stark difference between the wood and the old but very solid looking stone is quite noticeable making the palisade seem even more inferior than it is. This little courtyard of a sorts is filled with a handful of men, numerous small barrels holding ammo and even a small catapult. However perhaps the most noticeable things within the courtyard sit just inside the gate on either side, a pair of sturdy tierces (aka @40 gallon barrel) painted bright red.

As the group passes through this little courtyard uneventfully their rear guard switches out and the first five head back across the bridge while a second five take up the rear guard. Other than this the group only draws some glances from curious guards. They then pass under the open exterior portcullis through the gatehouse and then under the interior portcullis. Those experienced in castle design could easily see the the murder holes and ceiling holes used to decimate any trapped units. The gatehouse opens into another courtyard that surrounds a 3 story fortified stone building that sits in the middle. If there were stables they were around back because they could not be seen from here. Sitting on the steps of of this building is a old looking Gnome smoking an usual pipe, he watches the group as they approach with seemingly casual interest.
Jan 25, 2021 10:24 pm
The wizened old gnome puffing on his rather unusual pipe calls out, "Got some new recruits Sha or are these volunteers for me experiments?"
Jan 25, 2021 10:25 pm
"No Kezzel these are just recruits." the Dragonborn replies and walks up the short steps and opens one of the large doors waiting for the others to step inside.

Quincy worries about leaving his spear behind as they trek across the bridge and into the fort. He looks behind him longingly a couple times, but after a couple deep breaths and a bit of a recentering of his mind, he is back in the moment. He isn't sure why being a Chi manipulator and channeler is very noteworthy, but he remains quiet on the matter. As they travel through following behind the Dragonborn, Quincy looks all around the fort, studies its layout and shape, so that maybe once they're done here he can make a sketch of the place and a rudimentary map of the fort grounds. As they pass the old gnome, (as he does with all new strangers) he smiles and gives a slight bow, then follows the Dragonborn inside.
