Character Creation

A few of you have ideas already, and that's great. There's no real 'party balance' issue in Numenera, so make what you want. However, as I often find that duplicate character types step on your 'lol at the cool stuff I can do' toes.

In Cipher System haves, including this one, your character use largely defined by the phrase:

I'm an ADJECTIVE NOUN who VERBS.

The ADJECTIVE is cashed as Descriptor.

The NOUN is the Type (Glaive, Jack, Nano, Arkus, Wright, and Delve)

The VERB is called a Focus.
So what's your phrase? And how do you fit into Cooperstown?
Mar 31, 2021 12:22 pm
I'm still looking at a lawman-archetype Glaive, likely named Emmett, unless there are naming conventions DM would like to adhere to. He'll be a "Biomechanical Modification" background, and I think I'm leaning Speed-based rather than Might. I need to finish reading the character creation section to make sure I'm not gimping my character with those ideas first.

Ok , so i present you with Turana Alpa: an Inquisitive Nano that fused flesh and metal
https://i.postimg.cc/rm757tPk/715512-A7-D1-DE-4935-BC19-0-EF12-D25-A4-A6.jpg
For background i'm thinking first option a former Convergence apprentice / captive that escaped from her masters due to finding out how evil they actually were, something that left her with scars that she covers with a metal (or synth) mask and a hooded robe..If the convergence is not something that the GM wants to include then she would be a former Aeon priest that did not complete her training due to problems with structure and hierarchy. What do you think?

Your Nano sounds rad! I think she and Emmett will have a lot in common, since I was strongly debating taking that same Focus. That leads me into a question for Qralloq...

I'm looking at the focus "Augments Flesh with Grafts". I think it's really interesting mechanically and has a lot of character potential, but I'd like to dial back how reliant it is on surgery and biology, flavoring it as mechanics and machinery, essentially making more like lightwielder's choice in Focus, "Fuses Flesh with Steel". I love that Focus's flavor and the idea of constantly repairing the parts that are attached to you.

Essentially, I'd like to take the story flavor of "Fuses Flesh with Steel" and attach it to the mechanics of "Augments Flesh with Grafts". Thoughts?

It's not a deal-breaker, I think "Augments Flesh with Grafts" is still going to be my Focus. Emmett just doesn't seem the "graft biological pieces of his enemies onto himself" type of guy.

Interesting. I have no qualms in theory about modifying the Augments focus for story. I'll review tonight.
Apr 1, 2021 12:01 am
After giving it some thought, I'll probably just play the "Augments Flesh with Grafts" normally. Emmett will still look like he does in my mind, but when exploring he wouldn't have any problem grafting biological bits onto himself.

If he were only to do inorganic pieces, it screws with his ability to use enemy parts, which is a big part of the Focus. I'll still roleplay him like he's maintaining his machine parts, but they won't provide direct mechanical benefits. I may find a way to get repair training someday, but it's not required for the character.

WIP as I add a last name, image, tweak his backstory, etc

Emmett, Beneficent Glaive who Augments Flesh with Grafts.

Emmett is a man well into middle-age who has lived a hard life. He grew up in Thaemor as a farmhand until greed brought war to his idyllic home. Emmett was conscripted to defend his home from an invading force from Navarene. He was trained as a scout, but not before numenera were grafted onto and inside his body by a few rogue Aeon priests in an experiment to create more capable soldiers. His unit often took missions deep behind enemy lines, often for weeks at a time. His small unit was forced to live off the land and sometimes explored ruins to find some way to keep themselves alive. A few of the more ingenious (and highly trained) members of the unit found ways to further augment them with technology they discovered, which was likely the only thing that brought Emmett through the war. Unfortunately, very few members of his unit survived the final battle, and Emmett was so disgusted by it that he abandoned his home, escaping to a backwater mining town to live a quiet life.

There he found a job as a deputy of the local law. The law was essentially whatever the deputies and sheriff decided it would be, but Coopertown was lucky to have a good-hearted man such as Emmett, and after a few years he was made sheriff. He fell in love with the small town and its quiet ways, and was content to escape his more dramatic past in peace. Regrettably, fate does not always allow for such predictability, and his story was not even close to complete.

I’m in the process of creating my character. Slow going, this is new territory for me. I DO know I want to play a Jack- but I’m undecided on the descriptor and the focus. I know people say with Numenera there’s really no wrong setup- I just want to make a functional character.
Apr 1, 2021 5:50 pm
I've been immersed in the Descriptors and Foci for a couple days now, maybe I can help. What's your character like/what do you want them to do? What kind of role would you like to play?
Apr 1, 2021 9:31 pm
I think I hashed it out- see if this makes sense... Lyle Martej is a Curious Jack who Rides the Lightning. I'M DEFINITELY open for suggestions- I went back and forth between at least a half dozen descriptors and Focuses.

With Curious I got 2 points to put into my Intellect pool and the Perception skill as well as being able to Detect falsehoods? and Pierce illusions or disguises? I spread the 6 points I got from the Jack class and ended up with 11 Might 12 Speed 15 Intellect. Also with my class I took Trained in Armor(a waste?!) and Vanish. Jack also gave me the Flex Skill ability. Then I took the Lockpicking and Sneaking skills. With Ride the Lightning at Tier 1 I can use Shock and Charge both for 1 Intellect point...

I want my character to be a nice blend of rogue/scout stuff and fighting- I like the perks with Ride the Lightning and figured that would buff his movement and damage output. ANY advice you could give me would be appreciated!

SenorDeebs says:

It sounds like an interesting combination!

I'm still learning this as well, so take any "advice" I give with a grain of salt because it's completely possible I missed something.

I think your Flex Skill changes daily and Jack only gives 1 skill to be trained in. You'll have to decide whether you want Lock picking or Sneaking to be your permanent skill, and then you can choose whatever you want to every morning as your Flex Skill (which can definitely be whatever you didn't choose as your permanent one).

It sounds like you've built a pretty wide open character! You've got pretty high intellect which is good for Effort in detecting lies (as well as telling them). Personally, I tend to lean into one aspect of a character, so I'll usually go heavy on one ability to help me do that. You've got similar Might and Speed scores, so you can go either melee or ranged, not to mention a good Intellect score which will help with various Jack skills. Your armor skill will definitely help in combat, especially with a low-ish Might score.

I see no problem at all with your character, should be fun! How do you think they came by the Rides the Lightning Focus?

Good catch- yes I do get one skill. Adjusting that. As far as his backstory- I haven’t got a clue! I’m going to spend some time figuring out how he got to Coopertown and how he got his abilities. Question: is the mining town on a map or is it just in a vague area of the world? I’d like to make my character from somewhere nearby (but not too close).
Apr 1, 2021 11:04 pm
It's an entirely made up place. First person to pick a location on the map makes it canon!
Apr 1, 2021 11:13 pm
I figure somewhere in The Beyond for that proper backwater, bumfuck-nowhere, small mining town feel
Apr 1, 2021 11:28 pm
The eastern side of The Black Riage would set us in The Beyond and give us some mountains for our ‘mine’?
Apr 2, 2021 12:53 am
Question for DM: I'd like Emmett to have an azure steel left arm as a part of the Augments Flesh with Grafts background and his time as a military experiment. I'm going to get a shield as a part of character creation, and when it's time for him to use it, he'll block with his arm instead.

Emmett won't have any benefit other than what the shield would give him, and he won't have the "shield" when using heavy weapons. It's just flavoring his shield

Thoughts?
Apr 2, 2021 2:11 pm
OK- I did some editing- and decided to axe the 'rides with lightning' to make a more coherent character. I settled on A Curious Jack who Explores Dark Places. The backstory I came up with is:

Lyle was born into a small clan in the Hollow Gourd Burrow in The Slant Milieu. As a child his curiosity constantly got him into trouble. Not content to hunker down in the burrows, and knowing that going above ground would be a death sentence, he learned to explore deeper into the tunnels and long abandoned corridors that his people called home. Lyle’s constant disregard for the boundaries of his people's safe burrows, and the strange and sometimes dangerous artifacts he brought back, estranged him from his clan. In the hopes of easing the tension, Lyle set out, braving the weikerwind and heading south towards the Ba-Adenu Forest. His joy at escaping his deadly homeland was short lived, as he faced new obstacles on his way to the forest city of Ephremon. Once there, Lyle was hard pressed to make a living. A hot meal and a few shins were all he could hope for, until he met a group of smugglers. The Indeps were a group of freelance adventurers who trafficked questionable goods found only in the heart of the Ba-Adenu to the outlying regions. In his travels, Lyle stumbled upon Cooperstown- and although at first glance it seemed a dead end town, he quickly got a sense that there was more to be found there. Whenever he was in the area, he would stop into town. Eventually he started to establish business relationships and a few friendships in the area. Although content to continue his trade, he was sure there was something unusual, maybe even spectacular, about Cooperstown. Always driven by his curiosity, Lyle tried to dig deeper into the mystery every chance he got.

Sounds cool, very slippery-type character. I read through Explores the Dark Places, I could see Emmett fitting into the 3rd connection, "This person always seems to hear you, no matter how stealthy you try to be", if you're interested.
Apr 2, 2021 4:14 pm
Lol- absolutely Emmett can be that 3rd connection.
Apr 2, 2021 4:26 pm
Lyle might fit into one of my connections, too: "They once saved your life when one of your surgeries had a complication."

It might explain why the local sheriff/marshal/whatever is willing to go easy on you, if you happened upon him dying and saved his life.

Emmett Ashford, Beneficent Glaive who Augments Flesh with Grafts

https://i.imgur.com/CXCNlIe_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium

Wields a long, crooked polearm that appears to have been a leg to some walking robotic creature. The upper joint has been sharpened to a blade the length of a short sword while the lower end has lead weights melted onto the shaft to act as counterbalance.

Emmett normally wears a tight fitting leather jacket with a high collar and a glove over his left hand, even in warm weather. This hides his azure steel left arm and hand, surgically grafted to his body by the Thaemor militia and rogue Aeon Priests. It attaches between the shoulder and neck, but most of the back of his head and left side of his back are fully azure steel as well.

In addition, he has significant alterations to his skeletal structure to allow for further modifications and his body is a patchwork of scars and biomechanical alteration. In an effort to hide the become accepted in Coopertown, Emmett never dresses lighter than long sleeves and long pants.

I think I said this in the previois chat, but I'm looking at a Mutant Nano who Constantly Evolves.
Looking at choosing between Ward and Scan.
[ +- ] Ward
[ +- ] Scan
I know we have a friend who explores dark places, so I don't know if Scan will be helpful or overlap. Ward is great, if we don't have a party full of fighters.

Woot. It's all coming together nicely
Apr 3, 2021 1:11 am

Nice characters, im glad you like mine as well, i hope to post the character sheet today saturday night, i think on the character creation on the book it says we can start with a weapon, how much would be the limit on it's cost or something?
Apr 3, 2021 5:29 am
On that note. I know there are some weapons that are like 25Shin and some that are 1 or 2. If I was going to game the system I would just choose one of the expensive weapons and immediatly sell it.

Not that I am going to. But I just saw the option.
Apr 3, 2021 7:30 am
@Qralloq So I have the following ability for Constantly Evolves
[ +- ] Constantly Evolves Tier 1 benefit.
I dont know which ability we want to put the benefut on.
I was thinking of adjusting the following ability:
[ +- ] SlicingPhysical Resistance

It looks like the only weapon that would be a question of cost is the Buzzer light weapon. Beyond that, the most expensive is 8 shin, which doesn't seem crazy. But yeah, I feel like picking up the Buzzer as a starting weapon seems a bit if a stretch :-P
Apr 3, 2021 2:13 pm
@phoenixScientist I think that's a good improvement

As to the picking an expensive weapon and selling it to buy a cheaper one, that's certainly in the rules but I'd probably have someone rob you and steal all your stuff, because I'm salty that way, haha.
Apr 3, 2021 2:55 pm
Haha. That'd be fair. That's good.

You owe money to a number of people around town and don’t have the funds to pay your debts.
D'Jazyt or 'Jaz' is... a failure.
Born to one of the wealthier families in Coopertown, in fact his mother was a Mine Surveyor and knew the secret of the portal and traveled through it often. These travels continued while she was pregnant, and those travels caused... mutations.
Though these mutations were minimal when he was younger it was enough for him to be different. Different people are treated worse.
He fell in with 'the wrong kind of crowd' who used him for his money. Until he was cut off, both because of his appearance and his connections.
To keep up his funds he tried to pick up gambling... which worked for a while, but the house always wins. Now he is on his last Shins.
Though don't take any of this to mean he's a bad person, just a bit too trusting. He is even quite intelligent, and can be quite useful to the person or party with enough insight to hire him. And buy his loyalty.

I'm kind of stuck as far as my Focus connections go: I guess I could just assign people to them but I don't like the idea of forcing another player into a role they may not want! Emmett volunteered for #3 (thank you!) If any of you would like to volunteer for one of the other connections, please let me know! (If Lyle falls short of connections I can always just ascribe that to him being a traveler).

1. Pick one other PC. This character was your companion on previous expeditions, and the two of you work so well together that you both
gain an asset to any die rolls to collaborate on the same task, fight the same foe, and so on.
(Jaz)

2. Pick two other PCs. You think you once saw them through a keyhole doing something illegal. You can choose whether or not to share
that information. The characters can choose whether it was really them (it could have been neither, one, or both), and they may or may
not share that information in return.

3. Pick one other PC. This person always seems to hear you, no matter how stealthy you try to be. (Emmett)

4. Pick one other PC. This character is so loud in everything they do that you feel obligated to try to help them learn to move more quietly through the world. Whether or not they’re interested is up to them.

I also still need a connection. Hope someone picks one of these...

1. Pick one other PC. In the recent past, while using your gravitational powers, you accidentally sent that character hurtling into the air or plummeting toward the ground. Either way, they barely survived. It is up to the player of that character to decide whether they resent, fear, or forgive you.

2. Pick one other PC whose focus intertwines with yours. This odd connection affects them in some way. For example, if the character uses a bow, your ability to manipulate gravity sometimes extends the range of their arrows. If they are good at jumping, they seem less bound by the laws of gravity, and jump farther.

3. Pick one other PC. They are deathly afraid of heights. Through your ability to control gravity, you would like to teach them how to be more comfortable with their feet off the ground. They must decide whether or not to take you up on your offer.

4. Pick one other PC. They are skeptical of your ability to control gravity and think it’s just one big illusion. They might even attempt to discredit you or discover the "secret" behind your so-called skills.

Phoenix, I'll take this one. Emmett has dealt with too much to judge people on anything but their actions. You could be a floating crystal (which was apparently an option in the Destiny book), and he'd still treat you how he felt you deserve to be treated. Good for good, bad for bad. Since Emmett and Jaz both spent plenty of time in Cooperstown, I feel like they'd know each other somewhat well.

Oops, missed that SenorDeebs (Lyle) grabbed that one. S'ok, Emmett will still treat you well ;)

I like to have a good mental image of a game and its characters as we get started, so here's what I've got so far for everyone:

PhoenixScientist - D'Jazyt (Jaz) - Mutant Nano who Constantly Evolves

Grew up in Cooperstown to a wealthy family. Mom kept waltzing through spooky portal while pregnant, so Jaz was born with chromosomes that looked like alphabet soup.

Connections: Y'breq threw Jaz over a house, injuring him. Jaz thought it was awesome until he saw his bones poking out.
Connections: Jaz and Lyle were companions on an expedition and work well together.
Connections: Jaz found Lyle to be supportive and helpful, despite Jaz's mutant nature.
Connections: Jaz suspects Turana might be a mutant with latent powers she's not aware of.

nezzeraj - Y'breq - Imaginative Write who Controls Gravity

Backstory not listed yet.

Connections: Y'breq threw Jaz over a house, injuring him. Jaz thought it was awesome until he saw his bones poking out.

lightwielder - Turana Alpa - Inquisitive Nano who Fuses Flesh and Steel

A former member/apprentice of the Convergence, she's got machinery plugged in all over her that leaves her with a real Dr. Doom vibe. Bailed out of there because she's not a fan of bureaucracy.

Connections: Bonded with Emmet over their shared difficulty with airport security and metal detectors.
Connections: Jaz suspects Turana may be a mutant with powers she doesn't know about yet.

SenorDeebs - Lyle Martej - Curious Jack who Explores Dark Places

Born in the Hollow Gourd Burrow and has a dangerous sense of curiosity. Probably the guy that unleashed the Balrog in Lord of the Rings. Joined a smuggler's clan called Indep, stumbled upon Cooperstown while trafficking goods. He's slowly building a business and home there, feels like there's another layer to the town.

Connections: Emmett has a way of hearing Lyle, no matter how stealthy Lyle tries to be.
Connections: Lyle once saved Emmett's life during a botched surgery. God did not intend man to have 12 fingers, apparently.
Connections: Jaz and Lyle were on an expedition together and are work BFFs, great partners.
Connections: Jaz has always found Lyle to be supportive and helpful, despite Jaz's mutant nature (Probably extra fingers. Lucky.)

skeptical_stun - Emmett Ashford - Beneficent Glaive who Augments Flesh with Grafts

Former soldier from a small state who had a rough time as a scout/test subject in a brutal war. Settled in Cooperstown as a lawman and fell in love with the people there. His author is smart, good-looking, and suave. Everyone is super jealous.

Connections: Emmett has a way of hearing Lyle, no matter how stealthy Lyle tries to be.
Connections: Lyle once saved Emmett's life during a botched surgery.
Connections: Emmett and Turana bonded over their belief of improving themselves with implants and difficulty with magnetism.

Very well organized! Thanks for doing that!

Review of Lyle
- fill in Tier = 1.
- fill in recovery is 1d6+1
- fill in current pools equal to maximums
Rest looks good.
Review of Jaz
- fill in recovery is 1d6+1
- you don't have a skill in Light weapons. You're Practiced which means you don't suffer a penalty. You've left the Trained button blank which maybe works.
- you are Trained in Understanding Numenera. Toggle the radio button to the right and you'll see options for (T)rained or (S)pecialized
-Onslaught had two forms: physical which fires 4 damage, and mindslice which does 2 but ignores armor. You choose which you are using with each attack, not just one.
- mutations: mutations are exceptionally powerful and can be gamed for intense benefits. As such, they are always rolled randomly. I don't see where you rolled for these. Point me to that please?

Review of Emmett
- you are Trained in several things. Toggle the radio button to the right and you'll see options for (T)rained or (S)pecialized, rather than leaving that blank
- fill in recovery is 1d6+1
Rest looks good
Review of Turana
- fill in recovery is 1d6+1
- fill in Effort = 1
- add in your points for Enhanced Body. These are permanent
- your descriptor was mislabeled as Inquisitive instead of Intuitive. (Made it harder to find, haha)
Rest looks good

Review of Y'breq
- fill in recovery is 1d6+1
- fill in current pools equal to maximums
Rest looks good

Five for five on the recovery roll, but to be fair that's buried on page 111. It's 1d6+ your tier, and you start at Tier 1.

I'll assign cyphers and oddities shortly
Apr 4, 2021 5:54 pm
Bah, I usually pride myself on nailing the character sheet. I had the recovery roll on the character sheet I keep on my phone, but missed it on the GP one. Thanks for catching that and the radio button for T/S!

Also, can I buy a bow with the money given to me at character creation?

Yeah, you can buy a bow. Note that you can't use your shield with a two hand weapon, whether it's a metal arm or an actual shield, in case you simply want to swap the shield for a bow.
Apr 4, 2021 6:20 pm
My plan is to use either just the bow, just the Halberd (big robot leg), or the shield (arm) and punch stuff as a light weapon.

When Emmett earns a bit of money, he'll pick up a medium weapon to use with the shield.

Thanks, I'll deduct 3 shins and add a bow.

PhoenixScientist sent a note to Qralloq

I have everything else done.

You can keep them, but only if you let me give you another negative mutation, my choice.
Apr 4, 2021 10:50 pm
Ooh, a deal. I love a good deal with the devil DM.
Apr 5, 2021 1:03 am
Ok updated.

I shouldnt gamble so much.

Ooh , now i see it , i got confused with the 1st ed character guide, inquisitive was showing up there, sorry, I f thats okay i would the use the "curious" descriptor then, i really dont see myself playing a intuitive PC, i suck at it.. but wil use your feedback with the other things. if it somehow choosing curious over intiutive messes up the game you planned just let me know and i will attemp to roleplay some good intuition :s

No problem, make the character the way you want it. Now's the time to make changes.
Apr 5, 2021 3:20 am
Thanks, i just updated it, I hope its ready, i changed the weapon to a club to add a harley quinn touch to this poor dr doomish girl ;)

To be fair. Other than the intellect. It's not like I made especially good rolls....
Apr 5, 2021 4:00 am
I get that it may seem unfair. Here's Jaz's extra mutation (I tried to pick one that wouldn't be too breaking, some are rough):
Mentally vulnerable: All Intellect defense tasks are hindered.

I've added cyphers to everybody's sheets, and oddities. I might have missed one oddity, let me know if your sheet doesn't have one.
Apr 5, 2021 4:19 am
Rough, but not the worst. I guess I have a a big pool now to cover it...
And yes. I kniw you could have done much worse if you Wanted to .
Apr 5, 2021 10:19 am
I didn't see an oddity on my sheet.

It looks like the ray emitter has a 5% chance to be the type that numbs for one hour rather than one minute. I'm going to throw a d20 out there, 20 means I have the powerful version.

EDIT: Nope!
Last edited April 5, 2021 10:19 am

Rolls

Hour or minute? - (1d20)

(14) = 14

Apr 5, 2021 11:18 am
Added an Oddity to Emmett's sheet.
Apr 6, 2021 3:16 am
Can I get a shield (3 shins) before we get into it too far?
Apr 6, 2021 3:35 am
Can Emmett have surgically grafted the ray emitter before the fountain scene, or would you prefer him to do it during some free time?
Apr 6, 2021 4:21 am
Before hand is fine
Apr 6, 2021 4:43 am
For my starting plans, do I have to craft those I assume?
Apr 6, 2021 11:33 am
Right, you'd have to have the resources to construct them and then do so. If you have all of that at character creation, then we could have that done prior to start.
Apr 6, 2021 12:43 pm
I start with some stuff, but I haven't chosen the plans yet lol. There are so many! I'll see if I can choose one before we set out, that way I don't go off completely unprepared. Edit: Ok checking through the book, even though I start with some plans and materials, its nowhere near enough to craft anything useful lol. Guess my goal is to just collect as much crafting stuff as possible!

It's a bummer that Glaives are automatically given inability to salvage numenera, it fits Emmett (and his focus) that he'd be digging through numenera scrap piles to find ways to improve himself.

I plan on using XP to buy a skill in salvaging as soon as I have some to spend, so hopefully I can supply you with iotum soon :-)
Apr 6, 2021 3:35 pm
An inability isn't a prohibition, but a 15% chance reduction.
Apr 6, 2021 5:13 pm
Yeah, but that's a big hit for a focus that's designed around absorbing numenera into itself. If I had any skills that would be good enough to trade (and made sense to lose), I'd offer to trade the skill for the loss of inability.

Fortunately, the way progression works in Numenera makes it easy enough to buy out of inability for a few XP.

This isn't a complaint, to be honest. I'm really happy with Emmett :-)

How does that absorbing thing work?
Apr 6, 2021 10:40 pm
It's a part of the Augments Flesh with Grafts Focus. It allows Emmet to surgically graft both cyphers and pieces of biological organism to use like cyphers, and he can use them more than once.

His backstory had him scrounging for whatever he could to survive and contribute to his biomechanical mods. Salvaging numenera would fit right in.
Apr 7, 2021 12:02 am
If Jaz would know how Emmet works (and I think he does) he would donate his xray Cyper to the cause once they re meet up (becasuse he would not have earlier).

If you think that's a bummer, imagine being a Wright whose whole identity is about crafting numenera having a hinderance to salvaging lol. My guess is it's to prevent too much independence. If a wright can salvage and craft, they don't have to rely so much on others, especially Delvers. I'll probably also try to pick up salvaging soon. Thanks!
Apr 7, 2021 1:14 am
It's up to you, of course, but I'm probably going to take salvaging up to Trained. That would give you the ability to take Crafting or Understanding a little higher.
Apr 7, 2021 1:32 am
I have a perception asset. Would that include salvaging or not?

Ok, I like the teamwork! I'll let you take salvaging. I might bump it up a little eventually, as in game reason you helped teach me how to salvage better.

I'm going to go ahead and spend 4 of the 6xp our magnanimous GM gifted us on Speed Edge. That leaves me at 1 Might Edge, 2 Speed Edge, 0 Intellect Edge, and 2xp remaining.
Oct 8, 2021 6:05 pm
Ok, I'm going to take a training in Onslaught.
