Lyle sneaks forward, past the edge of the junkpile, and toward the main cavern. Sticking close to the wall, he gets to the edge.

The cavern isn't that packed. There are maybe a thousand quintpods of varying sizes. Most are smaller than you've seen, with about one in ten the size you fought. A smaller group, eight or nine, are twice that size. However, at the end farthest from the light, you see what has to be the queen. She's enomorous, the size of the whole redoubt back in Cooperstown, with eggs piled to the side. Quints tend to her, feeding her sacs of viscous goo, cleaning her, and keeping the eggs safe.

To the left, the cavern opens into darkness. Only the inky black of the night sky, with unblinking stars, solid pinpricks with a clarity you've never seen, unhindered by an atmosphere. You gulp in a breath, and are surprised there is still air. In the center, a huge star, smaller than a moon, larger than the largest star, blasts its light into the cavern. Heat burns on your face, almost as strong as sunlight.

The one thing that captures your attention, however, is a mirror-finished sac in the center. It captures the light and glows its own pale light. Veins of glowing fluid flow forth in multiple directions, one snakes over head and into the rock, and then into the derelict craft with the archway. You can all but feel the power, captured from the star, and converted to bio-technological energy.
Emmett on the other hand, finds a nest of small quints inside of a metallic crate. They hiss when he opens the lid, and tails flash in alarm.

The creatures number ten, and are difficulty 2. They will attack after everyone, except Emmett and Turana.

Further, Turana's hesitation will mean she needs to make a Speed check difficulty 2 to both move into melee range and attack on her turn, or be hindered one step on her first ranged attack.

Lyle will try and position himself at an angle where he can safely get a shot at one of the quintpods, draw his bow and let an arrow fly.

Y'breq's ring splits another one open. The remaining seven swarm over Emmett.

Emmett, roll 7d20 for speed Defense rolls. (Note: your armor will likely protect you from the 2 damage they do, but if you roll any 1s, you'll get stung and poisoned).

Then Emmett and Turana are up.

Emmett curses as the swarm crawls all over him, a nightmare come to life. He tries to will himself to hold still and focus, despite every fiber of his being screaming at him to slap them off as fast as he can before they cut off painful slivers of skin-jerky.

He can feel their razor-sharp cutting tools pierce into his brigandine, but the hardened leather holds up to their attack. They leave tiny slits cut in the armor, but don't have the strength to push through it.

Emmett takes a breath to calm himself and tries to grab one and crush it in his steel hand.

Where were these rolls when I was trying to scout?? :P

Emmett hits for +1 damage on melee, so an unarmed is 2 for him.

For the twenty as a major effect, can I knock another one off me, possibly doing damage? They're so flimsy, I can't think of anything I could do to the one I attacked, I suspect it's dead.

Turana attempts to regain focus amidst the battle, the screams and slashes, and the image of emmet being attacked gives her the urges to go running to him and help, but the horror! she might need to turn her mind off to overcome her fears
