Emmett's mild panic has begun to cool after seeing the ease with which they've dispatched the majority of their tiny, mildly infuriating foes. As long as they can avoid alerting the larger creatures, he might get out of this with only a few scratches and wounded pride.
He grabs another one and manages to snag one of its legs, smashing it against a nearby rock before searching for the last remaining quint. "Anyone see the last one? Is it on my back, I can't spot it!"

- the gate is mounted to the back of a numenera craft that is mostly disassembled
- the gate appears to be solar powered, with a power conduit in the ceiling.
- The junk pile is discarded metal, plastic, synth, and tech -- who knows what might be in there, maybe even more baby quintpods!
- the cave you're in appears to be somewhere where there is no visible sky, by which I mean air above you that colors the sky blue, although the cave itself is breathable

Lyle sneaks forward, past the edge of the junkpile, and toward the main cavern. Sticking close to the wall, he gets to the edge.
The cavern isn't that packed. There are maybe a thousand quintpods of varying sizes. Most are smaller than you've seen, with about one in ten the size you fought. A smaller group, eight or nine, are twice that size. However, at the end farthest from the light, you see what has to be the queen. She's enomorous, the size of the whole redoubt back in Cooperstown, with eggs piled to the side. Quints tend to her, feeding her sacs of viscous goo, cleaning her, and keeping the eggs safe.
To the left, the cavern opens into darkness. Only the inky black of the night sky, with unblinking stars, solid pinpricks with a clarity you've never seen, unhindered by an atmosphere. You gulp in a breath, and are surprised there is still air. In the center, a huge star, smaller than a moon, larger than the largest star, blasts its light into the cavern. Heat burns on your face, almost as strong as sunlight.
The one thing that captures your attention, however, is a mirror-finished sac in the center. It captures the light and glows its own pale light. Veins of glowing fluid flow forth in multiple directions, one snakes over head and into the rock, and then into the derelict craft with the archway. You can all but feel the power, captured from the star, and converted to bio-technological energy.

"Never seen one of them before, but it looks to power that portal of ours. Think it's a coincidence it's sittin' in the sun like that? Dunno if I want to go out there with all the quints to poke around at it, but maybe if we collapse the door, the light won't fall on it and the portal closes?"

The craft is relatively small, like a disassembled Star Trek shuttle craft. You can see all of the inside of it from without.

"It appears as if maybe the sunlight provides the energy. Before we start destroying everything, we can test the theory by covering that panel on top. I believe it serves as the energy collector. If it can't collect sunlight, it should power down the doorway. I also don't want to be trapped here so testing how long it takes to shut down is also extremely important." Y'breq sets off to search for a canvas or tarp or something big enough to cover the solar panel.
