Part 5: Return to the Moathouse Ruins

You won't have to worry about the zombie moving to that side. There's the stairwell wall there, and also a shelf that's been for the most part picked clean by the Giant Rats that previously inhabited this area.

It's kind of hard to tell by the map, so maybe this drawing will help.

Bors is standing at the top of the landing, five feet ahead of him, Maloria is standing on the stairs, probably on the top one or two steps. One zombie is standing a few feet below her, while another is currently behind that one lurking somewhere in the dark.
So basically, as it stands right now, the only way the Zombies are gonna get upstairs if for them to get past Maloria, and then shove past Bors who's standing directly behind Mal.

As the group tries to figure out the optimal caging for the zombies, Eltrezar does his best to get out of the way. He backs out of the storage room, finding a place behind Angel and Gilly. As always, he holds his lantern high, hoping to still provide illumination into the room, and readies a dagger with his other hand. "Mal, Bors! Back away, create a formation outside the room!"

Eltrezar flees the room, leaving only Mal and the Fighter to hold off the zombies rushing up the stairs. The zombie closest to Mal attacks the cleric with his shredded fingers. Luckily for her, the creature is too clumsy to make purchase with its hands which look easily strong enough to rend flesh and meat from bone.

Seeing as how the others didn’t all follow, Gilly will spend a turn watching their backs in the courtyard. She watches where the front gate is, and around the shadowy corners almost out of sight. She’s making sure they don’t get ambushed by some creatures cunning enough to capitalize on the zombie assault!

Mal will follow for sure, just gotta get to my number... PS we need to get Mal, Bors, and Man at Arms in the S10, and T9&10 spaces. Angel will need to move out and I believe Gilly already has with her last post. Mal and Bors can move into S10 and T9 this round while Angel and Man at Arms can swap places on their shared initiative count.

In order to see the front gate DGilly will have to move a bit. I put her at V9.

It sounds like a solid plan to killbox them in the same spot you did the rats is coming together. It is Bors's turn next.

Let's wait one more day and see if Bors takes his turn, and if not, to keep things moving I'll npc him a round. I'm thinking Bors will heed Mal's suggestion and move to T9 and ready his weapon and shield. But let's give it another minute and see.

As Bors pulls back into position, Mal sees her opening to do the same. She begins a fighting withdrawal and then shimmies her way over to S10.

With the group finally in position, Eltrezar stands firm with lantern overhead. Nothing to do now but wait. He casts a worrisome glance at the group, seeing evident injuries that might become dire if this battle gets out of hand.

Gilly wipes the sweat from her brow as she looks about the courtyard, watching the groups back. She prepares to swap over to her bow and arrows as soon as she catches her breath!

Few important things to mention real quick... Then we'll move onto Angel, Man-at-Arms, and Eltrezar.

1. Since Mal has to make a fighting retreat, she can only move 1/6 of her Movement Rate. Mal's current MR is 90', so she'll only be able to make a Fighting Retreat of 15'. After backing up the stairs and rounding the corner of the shelves the Giant Rats picked over, she can only get as far as R10 this turn. (Movement pattern for this round would be [Start at] Q10-->Q11 --> R11 --> R10 [End Movement].)

2. Since Mal is making a Fighting Retreat instead of a Full Retreat, she can still attack this round if she wants, either before or after her Move Action.

3. If you don't want to use your attack this round, you can opt for the Full Retreat. If making a Full Retreat you can move up to your Encounter Movement Rate (30' in this case), which would put you at S10, where you want Mal to be, but Maloria will forfeit her attack this round and any opponents gain a +2 To-Hit bonus on her this round.

Not being particularly strong with melee weapons, Angel steps back, 5' away from the killbox's front-line fighters and readies his bow just in case the melee fighters need help. The Man-at-Arms steps forward and fills the space Angel left unoccupied and readies his longsword.

Eltrezar is up next before the two remaining zombies rush up the stairs and attack the killbox fighters.

With all fighters in position the group stands at their killbox in anticipation. They don't have to wait long as the undead creatures make their way up the staircase and out of the storage room where the first one is immediately met by Mal, Bors, and the Man-at-Arms ready to attack.
OOC:
Because the zombies used their turn to make full movement instead of their Encounter Movement speed, they cannot attack this round. This gives the party at the killbox one more chance to bat their attackers around a bit before they finally face being attacked. Round 9 ends; Round 10 begins.
