Part 5: Return to the Moathouse Ruins

Having already disregarding his unsuccessful attempts, Norris seemed in agreement with the wizard. Glancing back at the doors, he commented to the group in general, "You don't need all sorts of cover and illusion to suggest or hint at the fact that no one wants you to go through a door- that's what the locks are for. Whatever's behind them isn't coming out any time soon. I think we have the luxury of time on our side... let's take advantage of that" he suggests.

Eager to get on with the exploration, he dusted off his trousers and moved back into the central room.

"I agree, we might even find a key further in."

Mal keeps watch on the party's back while they decide what next to do.
Aug 5, 2021 11:45 pm
Hrmph! "It's decided then. Let us check the rest of this chamber, including the cells, before we make more decisions. And let us hope that Maloria's strength is enough to keep the other undead at bay." Eltrezar leads the way from the middle (verbally directing and the occasional prodding) through the chamber, allowing the warriors in front to take charge once the other zombies are in view.

"I hate to admit it, but it appears you are correct. These boots were not made for kicking."

OOC:
Is the party moving to explore the cells, then?
Aug 6, 2021 1:09 am
OOC:
Yes! Also further down, which we haven't really explored. But cells first.
Aug 6, 2021 11:01 pm
Following the wizard's lead, the group moves to the other side of the room and looks south to the row of cells, where they first encountered the zombie horde. A few remnants of the original pack remain alive, though all seem to hiss and shirk away from Maloria's presence for the time being. There are a number of doors here, including the cells the zombies emerged from (N20, N22, N24, N26, N28), as well as a door directly behind their left shoulder (Q15).
In addition to these doors, there is a 10' cutaway about halfway down the eastern wall (Q23/24) that opens into a new room, though the transition here between the two areas is open and has no door.

OOC:
Given that they are turned, is it possible to narrate us dispatching them easily? They aren’t a threat to us. Not at the moment, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take the opportunity to put a knife into their brains.
"We should kill them while they can’t fight back. We don’t want to deal with them on the way out if… something happens." she side eyes Maloria and then looks away, with a sad expression on her face.

"And someone else might stumble across them."
Aug 7, 2021 1:50 am
OOC:
Yeah, I would say we could probably just roleplay their dispatchment without taking extral IRL days waiting for dice rolls. Let's just say that if you approach them, I'll post how you finish them off (so long as they're turned, of course), and after they're all killed off, I'll just add 1 ten minute turn to the party's clock to represent the time it took to do it during your exploration. Does that sound fair, so we're not getting bogged down waiting for dice rolls?

Sounds great to me! Let’s get em! And check the cells!

Anxious for the opportunity to make a quantifiable contribution to the group, Norris hastily unsheathes his sword and moves to help the spirited halfling permanently remove the turned zombies from the infamous List of Things That Could Still Kill Us. Still seeing them as a threat, though- the thief will approach them cautiously and strike fast, shuffling back in the event that they can manage any form of counter-attack. Once he realizes they are in fact fully 'helpless', he will be more relentless in his extermination.

Caution remains ever-present in his mind, however, but it has taken second place to the eagerness of helping make a difference.

Having no particular skill for physical violence, nor a desire to engage himself, Eltrezar instead moves towards the cells. He maintains as much distance between himself and the zombies as space will allow, ready to bolt at the first sign of aggression from them. He doesn't stray too far from the group, trying to keep them within the light of the lantern, but also tries to illuminate the closest cell as well, and moving on if there is nothing waiting within.

Unable to continue all the way south to where the zombies are without adequate light, Norris and Gilly are forced to stay within the boundaries of Eltrezars lantern light. The first cell the wizard examines contains a zombie who seems to instinctively sense Maloria's location despite a stone wall separating them and blocking one another's view from each other. As the zombie crowds the wall to get as far away from the cleric's presence, Gilly and Norris enter and dispatch of the creature.

Eltrezar, Norris, and Gilly are in the northernmost cell with a freshly dispatched zombie.

Having dispatched the zombie, Gilly gives the room a once over. She rummages around on the floor, and pushes haphazardly at the walls checking for loose stones. Content with her search, she will return to the hall.

Having caught Gilly's glance and earlier comment about the lizard, regarding which she knew had taken a friend of her's, Mal gently pats the halfling on the shoulder and offers a sincere smile.

"You make your fallen proud with every step, and I know for a fact they watch you from Cuthbert's citidel in the Heavens, beaming with joy."

With the dead men dispatched, Mal lends a hand in searching the cells top to bottom, scouring the corners and cracks with her keen dwarven eyes for any glint of a key.

Eltrezar stands back, giving light to the chamber and the cell, allowing his shorter companions the opportunity to search the area. His eyes are old and, well, human. His face drops somewhat Maloria speaks of the dead, the pain still being fresh. With more of a gesture than a word, he ushers Bors and Norris into the next cell to follow the same steps as Maloria and Gilly.

Bors takes up a position of defense at the edge of the light to keep anything from ambushing the group while they search. It gives him a moment to rest his aching foot.

As each zombie was felled, the witty rogue would search their bodies and tattered clothes in hopes of finding anything (such as coin) that may have given them an idea of who this fallen person was (or how much money they carried). Perhaps these findings could help Norris show the body to true peace (and show their coins into his purse) and bring closure to their distraught families (and new boots to his distraught feet).

"Looks like we’ve got nothing in here. Let’s keep moving down this way." she says, pointing further along the path they had just started heading!
OOC:
Not sure if I need to actually roll something for search. A d6 for each room or something?

OOC:
Sorry for the lack of communication the last half of the week. As I mentioned before, I was out in a small Montana town in the middle of nowhere for a few days so my daughter could attend a wrestling camp. The AirBnB we stayed at was on a farm even further out in the middle of nowhere, and internet was not the greatest. Not that that wasn't peaceful...

Give me a moment to post a response to each PCs activity...
Gilly searches the room, finding small amounts of debris and loose stone, straw, latrine buckets whose contents are so dried up and ancient they give no odor and hardly elicit a sense of disgust anymore.
Aiding in the halfling's search, Mal enter the cell and looks around, and withing only a short moment her eyes fall on a loose stone in the cell wall. Pulling the stone away, she discovers a beautiful green peridot gemstone, undoubtedly worth a significant sum of gold to the right buyer. Aside from that, the cell is void of anything of value.

As the dwarf and halfling search the first cell, Eltrezar moves along the rows of cells with Bors and the others. Bors keeps watch and one by one they move along. The next cell down contains another zombie still under the effects of the clerics Turn Undead casting, and once dispatched, the room is searched as the one before.
The party systematically inspects each cell, but turns up no other items of value. Five more turned zombies making their way as far south as the walls allow are eventually dispatched of in short order, and likewise, after being searched by Norris, nothing of interest is discovered on their persons. Their clothes are old, and threadbare, and the soles of their boots have worn to the undead creatures' bare feet long ago. It seems by the looks of them that they've probably been wandering these cells for countless decades, though who facilitated their undead state is uncertain. After ten minutes of searching the cells, the zombies corpses, and the room outside the cells, the party is fairly certain that only the gemstone discovered by Mal is worth note. Meanwhile, there remains a closed door at Q15 and an unexplored area of this dungeon at Q24.
