OOC:
@dominion451: You didn't have to roll vs Poison; the spider missed Mal. With an AC1, it needed to roll a 18 or better to hit you. So her shield and armor held off the attack.

Also, @nezzaraj: I was supposed to mention this to you after your first defense against the Giant Tick and forgot, so we'll throw it in now before I forget again.
Bor's has had something eating at him since the last encounter with the Giant Tick. Almost as if there's something he should be making note of but can't quite figure it out. Something that should be glaringly obvious, but in his focus to get under the skin of his companions, especially that of the silent-but-not-so-deadly Man-at-Arms, he's been shoving it out of mind. But as he entered combat with the spider it struck him again, that despite not having to defend himself from a poisonous attack like Maloria did, the shield strapped to his off hand seems excessively hard and dense for its size and material, yet considering the quality of the object, it doesn't seem to add any extra weight or clumsiness with handling. This might explain that regardless of how long it sat in the strong digestive acids of the Giant Lizard's stomach, it seems to be in almost perfect condition still, with a new-looking sheen to its surface and leather straps that are still supple and strong.
OOC:
As DM, unless a spell has been cast to identify "magic" items, or an object has been brought to someone with those skills, I shouldn't reveal any such properties unless a PC uses it. In that case, the DM should tell the players of any such "magical" properties.
Sometimes the results of using an item without the player's knowing are bad (it's cursed in some way, for example). Other times the outcome is good. In this case, the shield that Gilly cut from the Giant Lizard's stomach and which she has given to Bors is a Shield +1. By my calculations this brings Bors down from AC3 to AC2.

OOC:
it was just preemptive, I'm used to every kind of insect in BECMI being deadly poisonous, lol

With the scuffle finished, the wizard attempts to look over the shoulders of his companions. "I do not believe it necessary to gut this creature, as I understand they do not try to eat large objects. But the glistening of coin in this room warrants a closer inspection. I will guard the doorway as you do so." He looks into the room and up, as though searching for more spiders, but does not actually enter.
OOC:
Hrmph! "Leave it to a dwarf to confuse Poisonous for Venomous."

OOC:
is the fight over? I didn't read that...

funfungiguy says:

... Its chelicerae clang and scrape against Maloria's shield as she brings her hammer down on the beast's skull, feeling it crush inward under the weight of the blunt head. The spider's five remaining legs collapse clumsily under its immense weight, and a few twitch, but it is clearly dead.

"It might not have anything in its stomach, but what about its fangs or venom glands? I don't know anything about magicking but I would assume any good wizard would try to salvage some sort of ingredients from a spider this size." Bors shakes his head at this knife thrower masquerading as a wizard.
May 11, 2021 12:44 am
Hrmph! "If only it were as simple as lopping off the fangs and yanking out the glands. Alas, that is the sort of training someone of the natural arts would be better equipped for. It would be possible to make the attempt, but the chance of accidentally poisoning myself is quite great. And to what end, warrior? Do you wish a necklace made of this creature's teeth? Best you let me perform the arcane arts, and I will leave you to... waving that sword around."

Gilly, rolling her eyes at all the noise bouncing around the crumbling tower, begins to search the spiders den. Looking for bodies of previous victims to loot. She also watches for spiderlings and eggs.

Bors rolls his eyes. "A necklace of teeth? Good gods man, even Colin here knows spiders don't have 'teeth!' And waving my sword has been pretty effective so far. I've yet to see any magic yet though. Curious. But, it's not important. Much more important is my loyal sword, Spiderspiker, has helped slay another foul creature!"

Walking away in exasperation, Eltrezar throws his arms up (almost comically) as he grumbles about fangs being a specialized form of tooth. He doesn't stray too far, instead waiting for his companions to finish exploring the room. He is eager, however, to explore the lower levels. With the treasure they had found up here, with all the exposure to the elements and banditry, the lower levels must be a veritable (and likely literal) treasure trove.

Grinning at the old man's reaction, he follows him, also eager to continue exploring.

Gilly remains behind, until her search is finished to her satisfaction. She trusts they’ll wait for her before they descend.

Gilly makes a pretty thorough search. No spiderlings or eggs are found; the wolf spider was living a solitary life, it seems.
On inspection of the dessicated corpses, there is again nothing of value. The bodies are merely husks... Leather bags of rotting skin filled with indigestible or undesirable bones.
But as the halfling collects the coins the party saw shining she notices they become more densely scattered under a fallen piece of timber, and moving the rubble out of the way, she finds their source. Wrapped in a rough spun sackcloth she discovers a small ivory box, with a number of coins spilled out.
In total, the coins hold only minimal value. 38 silver pieces, and 71 copper pieces are recovered. But the ivory box, about the size of a large book, could easily fetch 50 gold or more if sold to the right buyer.

Gilly clambers out of the ruins holding the box up to her chest. She’s careful not to drop any coins, for fear of sending sounds through the whole building.

She sets the box down in the courtyard, in a place that wouldn’t immediately draw attention should someone arrive. The start to their next haul to Hommlet.

Eltrezar, curious, takes a look at the ivory box. It brings to mind an idea he had had previously, about hiring another minion to carry his spellbook, and a protective case to keep it in.
OOC:
Is the box the size of a large book, or the size required to store a large book?
May 11, 2021 5:09 pm
OOC:
Good Question... 1-3=large book will not quite fit, 4-6=a large book will fit snuggly.

Unfortunately, the text on the module states:
Quote:
Amidst the rubbish are 71 cp and 38 sp,and an ivory box about the size of a largebook (easily worth 50 gp or more to the right buyer).
OOC:
This would suggest that a large book likely wouldn't fit within the inside dimensions of the box. I thought maybe I'd let the dice decide, because it's a cool idea, but the dice say "no" as well.

But, I mean, Eltrezar only has one spell he never uses, so just jot it down in little notebook or on a napkin or something. What does he even need a whole large book for even? What, is he gonna hollow it out and hide all his daggers inside it?

Rolls

Ivory Box size - (1d6)

(3) = 3

Eltrezar sighs. Upon closer inspection, it will not be larger enough for his hefty tome. Perhaps his next haul will have to go towards contracting a case and hiring a loyal- and useful- hireling.

Gilly sets the box and its contents on the ground, in an out-of-the-way location in the main hall. The time approaches noon, and as the party reflects, it occurs to them that aside fro the strange secret door they found in the room the brigands were taking shelter in, the entirety of the main floor of the moathouse ruins has been explored. There remains the staircase in the storage room leading underground and whatever may be discovered there, for good or ill.

Ahem! "Let us not tary, there is much to explore and only half a day. Make sure we have proper lighting; I, myself, have a lantern to provide the option of sight. Perhaps our new hireling should carry it." The wizard takes the lantern from his pack, and begins moving towards the staircase down, not straying too far from his companions.

OOC:
Ha! No idea how I could have missed that bit.
Mal recovers her torch from the spiders den and carries it behind Eltrezar toward the foreboding staircase leading into the bowels of the keep.

With what Mal had heard during the nights of her captivity, she felt more than a little apprehension about rooting out it's source. Nonetheless, there was a job to do and so the dwarf screwed up her courage and marched alongside the others into the black.
