The wizard rolls his eyes. "It is not the number of incantations, but the power they invoke. I have only a few, and even these took much of my life to master. Much of the book is dedicated to the principles of magicks, which might as well be the history of Oerth. If you must know, I have been dabbling with some new formulae, but do not yet have them complete."

Gilly checks her equipment before they descend into the deeper part of the dungeon.
"Who’s going to go first then? Could go in twos, if you’d feel better about it?!"

Eltrezar looks down his nose at his small friend, nodding. "Pairs is the smart decision, as our strength is in our numbers. I will happily stand in the middle, if Bors and Mal would like to take point. Or perhaps our silent companion would like to stand in the lead with the lantern..."
May 12, 2021 8:00 pm
Mal steps forward to stand alongside Bors and acknowledges him with a nod. With a quick whack of her hammer against her shield, the dwarf is ready to go. She turns around and holds out her out torch to Eltrezar, thinking the old wizard might make better use of it than she.

Eltrezar looks between the torch he was just handed, and the lantern which he gave to the hireling. Some baffled noises ensue, and he swaps the light sources.

OOC:
Okay, I have Man-at-Arms in the front with the lantern. Bors and Mal in the second row close behind but without a light source. Gilly and Eltrezar in the next row with Eltrezar carrying a torch. Angel taking up the rear. Correct me if I've misinterpreted anything. In the meantime...

I think we have three rows of two. Bors and Mal in the front, Eltrezar and Man-at-Arms in the middle, and Gilly and Angel in the rear. At least, that's how I interpreted it. And Eltrezar just swapped light sources with the Man-at-Arms, so the wizard has a lantern and the meatshield has a torch.May 13, 2021 6:35 am
OOC:
Ah, Gotcha! Okay, let me make some adjustments and fix this Dynamic Lighting. I forgot Maloria has Darkvision.
OOC:
What... do you do?May 13, 2021 12:21 pm
Gilly arms herself with her short sword for now, given that she might be attacked suddenly out of the dark at close quarters. She sticks close to the wall and strains to listen for any sounds before they descend fully. The way down seems quiet and clear, and Gilly will creep behind the group, ready to run between their legs at a moment’s notice to listen or scout ahead.

Bors also keeps his eyes and ears out. Unless Gilly or he hears something, Bors will continue into the room with Mal at his side, shield and sword at the ready.

Eltrezar nods at Bors, with a dagger in one hand and lantern in the other. He looks around a little nervously, trying to find the safest way forward. "Good ears, warrior. Perhaps you'll earn your keep after all." A little jest is in his voice, but it might also be an attempt to lighten the mood in a dangerous situation.

Bors raises his shield above his head and enters the room expecting another giant spider or something of that nature to fall on him. Instead, he rushes into the room and hears a wet-sounding "splat" as a faceless, amorphous, green blob of slime falls from the stone ceiling and hits the floor behind the fighter with a wet smack. It starts forming itself back into some sort of shapeless mass.

Though the slime technically lost its "surprise" round after being heard, running in anyway allowed it to get a "surprise" round, which it failed to capitalize on. Round 1 begins! Turn order is as follows:1. Gilly, Green Slime (6)
2. Maloria, Man-at-Arms (5)
3. Angel (4)
4. Eltrezar (3)
5. Bors (2)

As the green slime writhes and moves, Gilly just shoots for whatever amounts to a central mass. She threads her shot between her companions.

Gilly fires an arrow at the slime, hitting the oozing mass directly, and watches as the arrow sinks into its soft texture, stopping somewhere near bloblike creature's center. The creature doesn't react to the direct hit at all, but instead a green, nearly shapeless psuedopodium of slime darts forth at one of the nearby fighters. The shapeless "arm" of the creature lashes out at Maloria, driven by some unknown sense of her presence, but misses, and the psuedopod retracts and rejoins itself.
