Part 5: Return to the Moathouse Ruins

"Ye Gods!" Mal exclaims as the hideous tic leaps at the wizard. She rushes to Eltrezar's defense brandishing her hammer...

Attack - (1d20+1)

Damage - (1d6+1)

Maloria rushes to Eltrezar's side and swings her hammer down on the arachnid's head. It strikes it's target, but just barely, and the glancing strike tick seems more or less unperturbed with the hammer's blow.
OOC:
Without being given a specific grid coordinate to move Mal, I took an educated guess that she would move to N9. This will give a ranged attacker an angle to get at least one shot with an arrow with only a -1 penalty for cover (Eltrezar being slightly in the way), and still allow another melee fighter (Bors perhaps) to move in to N10 and attack later this round.
Meanwhile the as yet unnamed Man-at-Arms rushes into the room, and jumps up on the table on the east side of the room, runs the short length of it, and jumps down into the archer's arrow slot, positioning himself behind the tick. He then swings his longsword at the creature, which misses horribly.
OOC:
The Giant Tick is up next. With three different enemies engaged with it in melee combat, it will choose it's target randomly with a 1d3 roll: Eltrezar=1, Maloria=2, Man-at-Arms=3.
Still focused on the wizard that haphazardly disturbed it, the tick again reaches for Eltrezar, hoping to grab it with its forelegs and pull the juicy human into its ugly, saw-like proboscis, but again the wily wizard manages to keep himself from the monster's clutches.
OOC:
Round 1 continues! Turn order is as follows:
1. Maloria (7)
2. Man-at-Arms (6)
3. Giant Tick (5)
--> 4. Eltrezar (4)
5. Angel, Gilly, Bors (3)

Bors cringes at the Man-at-Arms' horrible swing. "Dear gods, not like that, Cuthbert! Less elbow and more torso! The power comes from the hips!" He attempts to coach him helpfully.

To think I paid good money for this guy. AND he wants 10%. Cheeky git!

Eltrezar sputters as this creature suddenly emerges from the cask. "Egads, where in the nine hells did this blasted creature come from," he yells out to his companions, darting back through the doorway. Once he crosses the threshold, the wizard turns and flings a blade that had appeared in his hand somewhere during his movement. Only once he is in a safer position, "Drats, the wine must be spoiled by now."
OOC:
Strange. I added my rolls, but they aren't appearing for me. Might just be some forum lag. Nope, it's a matter of posting before my coffee. Swapping 'reason' and 'roll' was the problem.

The Man-at-Arms gives Bors a look of annoyance, though whether it be in reaction to the chastisement or for being called Cuthbert is unclear. Meanwhile, the squishy mage retreats to the hallway and throws a dagger at the tick, which hits, but clatters uselessly off the not-quite-insect's immensely hard, chitinous, exoskeleton.

Angel then rushes through the door and dashes to the right, joining Gilly at her side, so that all three ranged attackers (including Eltrezar) have a clear, unobstructed shot at the tick. He draws an arrow and fires but his arrow too bounces off the tick's shell.
OOC:
Round 1 concludes with Gilly and Bors acting simultaneously:
1. Maloria (7)
2. Man-at-Arms (6)
3. Giant Tick (5)
4. Eltrezar (4)
--> 5. Angel, Gilly, Bors (3)

If Bors wishes to engage in melee with the Tick without interfering with the shots of the ranged party members by giving the Tick cover he may want to consider moving to P9 (on top of a table), or P8 (in the arrow slot). Either movement will require a leap onto (and possibly off) the table. This will require a Dexterity roll, but seeing as the table is pretty low and a fighter like Bors should be expected to be relatively athletic, Bors would get a bonus of -4 to this roll (subtracting 4 from a d20 roll and hoping to roll equal r lower than Bors's Dexterity. Should be easy, but a failure means that Bor's does get where he wants to be, but so does it clumsily that he had to use an Action to climb on the table and finish his movement. Success means that he deftly leaps onto the table (and possibly off again, depending on where you want to move) in one deft movement and can still use his Action this turn to attack. OR, maybe Bors has completely different ideas and I'm jumping to conclusions. Maybe Bors has such little faith n Eltrezar's ability to hit the broad side of a barn with his daggers he doesn't care about interfering with Eltrezar's line of sight; I don't know...

Also, ranged attackers should remember that since you're within short range of your enemy you get +1 to your To-Hit rolls (I factored this +1 in for Eltrezar's roll, but he still missed, though just barely).

Bors is totally the type of person to leap on a table in dramatically cool fashion lol.
Bors rushes past Mal and leaps up on to the table. He lands deftly and pirouettes with a wide sword slash at the enormous tick.

Gilly expected something like this and so is primed to let an arrow fly at the earliest opportunity. She threads the arrow between her companions, hoping to strike a nice soft part of the creature!

"Great shot Gilly!"

Mal beams with pride at the halfling for a moment before turning her attention back to the oversized blood sucker in front of her.

Us short gals gotta stick together, she thought to herself.
Apr 30, 2021 4:30 pm
And soft spot she hits! While Bors's swing was clearly impressive to look at, the blade of his weapon clinks off another segment of hard exoskeleton, but as the creature raises its forelegs in reaction to the strike, Gilly fires an arrow which hits it somewhere between the segments of it's softer underbelly and her arrow sinks deeply. The tick gives a strange high pitched expulsion of air like are pushed through a punctured sheep's bladder, which can only be interpreted as a Giant Tick's cry of pain.
OOC:

"Great teamwork! My clearly intentional use of the Distracting Slash technique proved to be the correct one!"
May 1, 2021 10:12 pm
Gilly's next shot misses, but just barely. Hoping to ake advantage of the tick's distraction the Man-at-Arms swings his sword at the tick's rear. Again the man's attack mises by a long shot, sailing way off the mark. The man has yet to hit target in combat.

Moving back up to the doorway, Eltrezar continues flinging daggers at this beast that had just a moment ago attempted to eat the wizard's face.

What the frick?!? Daggers have a short range of 10'. First, I have no idea how I haven't realized this before. Second, that's crap! Jeez! Also, I have no issues with moving Eltrezar if you wish, cowleyc, but according to the roll20 tape measure, he is currently at the 20' range from the tick, if you wish to stay where you are. Just give me a heads up what you want.

Maloria swings her hammer, which bounces uselessly off the tick's hardened back. Eltrezar's dagger and Bors's sword strike are both met with similar results. It would seem this monster's chitinou asrmor is more formidable than many of the party's previous adversaries.

Hoping for better results, Angel fires another arrow at the arachnid, this time hitting the beast directly in the face. Again, the tick releases a gasping hiss of air, one can only interpret to be a cry of pain as a viscous yellow goo spills forth from where it's shattered left eye once was.
OOC:
The Giant Tick will engage with an enemy withing close reach if possible, so I will roll a d6 for Target Selection. 1=Maloria, 2=Man-at-Arms "Charles", 3=Bors
With Eltrezar out of arm's reach the tick lunges for Bors, but grasps wildly at only air, its motions herky-jerky as it struggles to deal with only one compound eye for vision, crippling pain in it's thorax and cranium, and quickly depleting strength.
OOC:
Round 2 ends with no damage done on the part of the Giant Tick, while Angel scores a huge hit with his bow. Round 3 begins!
Turn order is as follows:

I was going by squares, which puts him at 25'. But if he doesn't have to move, he won't. Daggers really aren't that great, but it's the ONLY weapon he's proficient in.
