The ethos seems to be one of acceptance and tolerance over any other overriding principle. For all are to be made welcome and seen as equals, and fellow worshippers should be aided freely, as if they were one's dearest friends. So always be kind, except in battle with evil. Encourage joy and happiness everywhere. Learn and teach new songs, dances, and the flowing dance of skilled swordwork. Promote harmony between the races. Befriend strangers, shelter those without homes, and feed the hungry. Repay rudeness with kindness. Repay violence with swift precisional violence so that those who cause it are quickly dealt with.

The Rock Gnomes of Lantan are innovative thinkers and are responsible for a vast variety of inventions, including more than a few that are commonly attributed to Dwarves. Although a diminutive people, Rock Gnomes think big, often coming up with designs far too complex to ever be realized in a single life time and these simply become on going clan projects. To Rock Gnomes, technology is a way of life. Even Rock Gnomes who take on other trades often tinker in their spare time. Because of their innate curiosity, they produce a wide variety of devices that are interesting or amusing but otherwise useless or impractical. While others might shake their heads at such folly, the Rock Gnomes value all inventions, no matter how unimportant they might seem.

Within the Rock Gnome community on Lantan there are mainly two styles of Artificers, those that create, and those that innovate. There is almost an equal distribution of these at any one time as well as a few hybrids sprinkled in but that is only because the creators tend to blow themselves up. For it is said there are old artificers, and there are creator artificer, but there ar no old creator artificer. As such, those born to be artificer tend to be the creative sort and these are held with the highest esteem within the Lantan community. Still it is the innovators that eventually turn a creators work into something viable.

To say creator artificers are eccentric would be an understatement and as such many of their inventions are as bizarre as their creators with seemingly no apparent use. This is because creators are driven to create, almost as if it were a madness, and often they are creating things just to see what happens or just to get it out of their heads. Sometimes these creations do nothing, sometimes they work, sometimes they malfunction, sometimes they blow up and sometimes they blow up castrophically. Regardless of the end result, if the creator artificer survives, they then simply move on to their next new and exiting creation. A creator's technology tends to be radical and dangerous, always pushing the ragged edge of feasibility. However creator artificers have short attention spans as a rule, so if they cannot get something to work right away, they either give up or move on to something else that attracts their attention. Creator workshops would be littered with half-finished projects and scavenged remnants of inventions that did not pan out if not for the innovators cleaning up after them. The creator attitude simply gives them more time to work on new and promising creations as such some of the most well-known devices in the world have come from the proverbial trash heaps of creator artificers who were uninterested in taking their invention to a more stable and functional state. This is where the innovator artificers steps in.

Innovator artificers tend to work as assistants to creator artificers attempting to organize and facilitate the creators life's work. They are the ones that turn the creations into something profitable to help fund the creator artificer's genius (or madness depending on one's perspective). Sadly though the innovator artificers do not seem to have that creative spark, they however are in many ways commensurate organizers and have a tenacity and focus that allows them to work on something endlessly, producing blueprints, schematics and spending much more time organizing and planning their project than actually working on it and almost always taking far longer to make an adjustment upon a device than it took to intially create it. Still their adjustments never have the explosive results associated with that of creator artificers. This is because an innovator's re-designs always feature a high degree of complexity and they always take steps to ensure the worst that could happen is a brief, non-fatal failure. Further if the design fails, they simply try to learn why, and then fix it if they can. If they meet with success, they as often as not continue to tinker with and improve the design, often for years afterwards.

Then their are the small number of hybrids artificers, Rock Gnomes that are more stable than creators but not as focussed as innovators. These Rock Gnomes often become adventurers as they need to discover new things to fuel their creativeness and need something to break up the monotony of constant redesigning and tweaking. These Rock Gnomes are those that most outsiders are aware of and they are look upon as being half-mad-genius and half-industrious-crafter. Still not having the backing of an entire community, these inventors are constantly desperately trying to maintain their amazing devices, thus they rely a lot on improvisation and jury-rigging that sometimes only works haphazardly. Thus when one of these hybrids create something, the process might appear to be one part ingenuity and five parts desperate improvisation that borders on lunacy. Further many of these devices look suicidal to use and rarely work correctly for long but they rarely have a castrophic ending, unless that was part of the design in which case the hybrid artificer is usually no where near by when that happens.
