Character creation

Apr 18, 2021 7:48 pm
Hello and welcome to the game.

Here you can roll and describe your character and ask questions if any arise.

For the attributes you roll four D6 and drop the lowest. You can then assign the numbers to the attributes however you want.

You take the standard starting equipment.

Allowed source books are the PHB, SCAG and XGtE.

A backstory would be nice as I will try to weave them into the story. It doesn't have to be a novel though.
The world is deliberatly rather a framework than a fully fledged settings in order to alow you to make a unique character without paying to much attention to existing lore.
I will add pieces to the world as we progress through our adventure

So if you e.g. want a Paladin from the Order of the Rising Sun, this order can be assumed to exist in this world

If you need any help don't hesitate to ask.

Rollin' dem virtual bones

Results : 8, 15, 12, 12, 13, 10

Not the most impressive but a lot better than some others I have played.

Still like my system of rolling abilities better ;) but rare to see it used elsewhere (3d6) keep 2 add 6 and I still get folks getting 8s every now and again and only a few that actually get exceptional stats.

So will wait on guidance from you as to where to go with this.

Rolling the attributes! Let's see if I get something fun. :D

11, 14, 12, 6, 7, 8? That's fun. Kinda bad, but fun! Also fits my thoughts about maybe making a character who is very new to the whole mercenary thing...

Edit: added a trinket roll for the background. I'll reroll it if it's something too unfitting.
Edit2: this is some impressive coincidence with the d100!

Haha, I don't mind it. XD I think it can actually make for a fun (if not very survivable) character!

And it gave me an idea! What do you all think about a fragile dancer who is simply travelling on "Jolly Wanderer", but gets pulled into the things by pure chance? It will explain severe inexperience with low attributes, and I can pick some supportive class... Oh hey, it can be my first ever bard. :D

Well if you wish to subject yourself to that much punishment by all means.... note you can more easily handicap yourself via Personality which only takes role playing to overcome eventually -- core abilities like that can as you put it be "not very survivable" and I am hoping this is going to be a long running game as there was no mention of a one-shot. Still the GM would have to approve the re-roll and I am not sure what they are have in mind, those Abilities could not only impair your character but they might impair the group. I mean it is not like you have 1 out of 6 bad stats -- half your stats are bad and the other half mediocre.

If the GM wanted to go with a generic approach to it he might let players reroll 1 or 2 stats but you have to keep the reroll this way someone as to consider whether they want to risk a mediocre roll or not and this would help folks like you repair some of the damage the pseudo random generator did to you. Or perhaps the GM sets a minimum average modifier of something like +1 like another GM I am playing under opted for when some players had miserable results.

DeJoker says:
Well if you wish to subject yourself to that much punishment by all means....
I shall subject myself then, since you're offering. :D
But really, while I wouldn't want to make it harder for the group, I doubt it will matter that much on 1st level. And if this character survives to a level up, wouldn't it be cool? A lot of interesting story possibilities! And even if not, it doesn't mean I can't rejoin with another one later~

Anyway, I'll just wait for Scrol's input; if our GM advises to reroll, I will, but I'm fine with luck not being on my side. It just means it'll watch over me later. :P

Sketched out and submitted a human bard character sheet! Not yet finished, mostly just tinkering around and thinking how to better pursue the dancer theme. Also casually gave them Lucky for a feat, and only after that realized the irony. XD

Edit: finished it up mostly, except for actual descriptions.

Oi those are some nasty rolls here FlyingSucculent ^^

If you want to you can reroll one of them or switch the lowest stat out for a 12.
I'm planning on making this campaign more centered on role playing than on grim survival and combat but it can be frustrating to fail with most of your rolls either way.
But I'm not forcing your hand. If you want a clumsy character who stumbles through the world you can certainly do so ;)

Nice rolls, Waffle!

So, current thoughts for my class just to see if it might conflict with anyone's choice - Abjuration or Divination Wizard, or Eldritch Knight.

Leaning into a ranged EK concept.

Keep rollin', rollin', rollin'.

Edit: 18, 15, 12, 11, 11, 11. Very nice!

So far it looks like we've got a Bard (kudos for taking on the challenge of such a rough start in life!) and a Fighter (soon-to-be Eldritch Knight). Has anyone else settled on a class?

I'm leaning towards a Warlock.

Changing one is a nice compromise, I think I'll take you up on that! But I'm going to be *funny*, and keep my worst score because I kinda want to have bad Strength as a gimmick. (To be fair, I did pick up prof in Athletics, so as long as I have someone else do actual heavy lifting, it shouldn't be too much of a hibdrance.) And of course, I'll play with luck again! :D

I see a lot of good rolls for other characters, so hopefully my frail bard can at least count on her allies to save her in case of an oopsie. XD

Edit: ooooh, sweet, this is definitely an improvement.

Are we allowed to swap out a skill proficiency from a background? Outlander in this case - I want to switch Athletics for Nature.

Then I get to be a pseudo ranger with survival and nature skills that can cast magic(!).

I cannot say what this GM is doing but most of the GMs I have played with on here do allow you to sell back whatever equipment you do not want at book price and buy what you want at book price as long as it is only normal equipment. So I suggest going through and detailing what you get -- what you want to sell -- what you want to buy with that -- and then ask the GM if they are okay with your changes.
Apr 19, 2021 6:56 pm
Sooo to summarize we have an eldritch knight, a warlock, a bard and a sorcerer.
Seems like everyone is a bit on the squishy side. So a tanky character coooould come in handy ^^
As for changing the proficiencies: As DeJoker already said: That's allowed.

You can sell and buy your starting equipment however you want. You can also buy additional equipment with your starting gold if you want to.

Here at DND Beyond is a nice listing of available equipment and the prices

Finished the sheet. I added personality, appearance and some background, maybe will add more later, but the basics are here.
Also swapped one of my tool proficiencies - musical instrument for Gaming set (cards), - changed a few spells (since I didn't notice they had material cost) and bought some new equipment.

Let me know if there is anything I need to tweak!
And I added her sheet to library, so everyone else can see it too. :)

I was thinking Warlock. Currently looking at Hexblade + Blade Pact to really put that 18 Cha I rolled to work, and to reduce the overall party squishiness somewhat.
Apr 20, 2021 3:05 am
Okay, so, about that Paladin. Leaning hard in that direction, and I'm basically committed at this point. I've got two chief concepts, one that I think is a relatively safe bet, and one that's... while I wouldn't call it terrible, I would call it potentially inappropriate tonally for the game if we're going for a classically heroic sort of deal.

First, Oath of Ancients Paladin. Very tanky, if I'm reading the mechanics correctly, and would absolutely fit the bill of a Selunite, Sunite, Tymoran or some member of the Elven pantheon. Joyous, supportive, and a ray of sunshine who understands that life is for the living, and the living gotta live it up. In the meantime, they serve their duty to expunge the horrible things that want to snuff out that light of joy. I imagine them fresh-faced, innocent, and emboldened by tales and songs of great deeds, striking out for the first time to emulate those ancient heroes and to leave their mark on the Realms. This is the safe bet, and I rather fancy it myself as I typically play those with a clearly heroic bent. Then I made a horrible mistake and started reading through the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and Xanathar's...

So hear me out: Paladin of Asmodeus, either Oath of Conquest or Oath of Devotion. Hold on! Don't leave yet! Tastefully Evil -- the bargain-striker, the deal-maker, the oath-swearer -- and not so much the stabby-stabby murder-times evil. Honorable, dependable, somewhat selfish and a little deceptive at times to be sure, but with that ever elusive "hidden heart of gold." Somewhat in the same vein as a Warlock I suppose, albeit more divine and martially inclined, having made a pact to save their own skin by striking similar deals with others and spreading the deeds of the Lord of the Ninth (promoting law and stability, removing lesser evils and threats from power, et cetera). Understands not everyone wants to make a deal with the literal devil and obviously won't force the issue (mostly because they probably aren't worth it if they're unreceptive in the first place), but hey, that's the price they paid to avoid an afterlife of centuries in the Fugue, with a solid chance of simply just being damned to the Nine Hells and tormented for eternity anyway. Obviously this requires a little more finesse and tact to be done correctly, and the last thing I'd want to do is step on peoples' toes (or be a bad fit for the party), but I thought it was a neat little idea.

I agree, I think it's potentially a very interesting take on a complex character. (I considered going along similar lines with a Fiend pact for my Warlock, though I think Hexblade fits better with what I want to do.)

I'm not averse to evil characters, but I would like to set some expectations up-front: I strongly prefer games where no matter the ideological differences, the characters are always on the same "team". When situations arise that cause division between characters, I'd like us as players to find ways to resolve that via reasonable compromise, without PC relationships becoming adversarial.

So, like, characters who consistently work towards the party's goals are great. Characters who go against the party's goals or otherwise cause intra-party conflict are not so great. It's on all of us to ensure that harmony, but the onus tends to fall on Evil characters to be a little more willing to act in ways that don't necessarily match up with their core personality for the sake of the game.

Ultimately it's up to Scrol what works for his game! I'm just putting my position on the matter out there.

Yes. Exactly! Evil for evil's sake is dumb, and obviously derailing the story in an un-fun way is a terrible thing to do. Being on the same team is most certainly at the top of the list, right below "everyone having fun". I'll be the first to admit I don't typically play evil characters of any stripe, but I'm willing to take a genuine stab at doing it the right way, and it's equally understood that if we're going for a more heroic and noble sort of campaign that, hey, no hard feelings. It's just a concept, and I'm willing to work in the direction that makes the most sense, fits well in the narrative, and help tell a great story.

In the meantime, I'll set to work on both concepts mechanically, and in either case I'll have a Paladin ready to go.
Apr 20, 2021 4:26 am
I have walked that path before on more than one occasion both as the player of the nots so nice and member of the not so nice's group. It rarely turns out well, either the character gets horribly comprised or the party does. This is why as a GM I do not allow any evil aligned characters. Not just to protect the party but to protect the players from themselves sometimes. I am sure you could take that same twist and apply it to a Lawful Neutral character as the conceptual twist underlayment is purely aesthetical in nature and Lawful Neutral does not mean your Good all the time nor are you Evil all the time. You just tend to walk that line and slip occasionally.

Of course, in this game, I am just a fellow player but I would caution you against something that seems enticing on the surface as, like I have said, I have rarely seen it work out all that well.

Why not look into Kelemvor the newer deity of the eternally damned. You think the Nine Hells are bad, do you know what happens to those you die without a patron even an evil one will save you from that horrible fate. And he has a very nasty disposition for those who attempt to cheat death via undeath.

As proposal though perhaps your character and my character can have a bond of some sort that helps pull your character more to the side of good than of evil. A sort of living tie and chance at redemption for your character. Something to bounce your more negative energy off of safely. Thoughts?

I personally love Lawful Evil characters and the honorable antagonist/evil archetype, and certainly won't mind you going for one, WonderWaffle. :D I think it can make for interesting group dynamic and character relationships, provided this character remains true to his ideals. Besides, alignment lines are kinda murky anyway. For me it's fine as long as the character doesn't just go around murdering and torturing and doing other dastardly deeds for fun (or at least without a reasonable motivation). XD

Well most of what you can do with a Lawful Evil within a group that is not mostly evil (and I do not plan to be) you can do with someone that is Lawful Neutral with the appropriate personality elements. So again I have only had bad experiences when someone choose to play Evil thus I try to stay away from it both as a player and a GM. But to each their own and I will do my best.

Oh no, don't drop that aspect. It's fun! I can't speak for anyone else but I'm comfortable with that. Should be interesting as I'm playing a blunt no-nonsense type from the other end of the spectrum.
Apr 20, 2021 5:50 am
Oh and as for being flirtatious feel free to flirt with my character the response will depend greatly on that character's views which have not been affirmed yet. As I keep reality and fantasy separate and role playing can be so much fun when that separation is maintained.

I'm aiming for a rather light hearted, heroic adventure. Nothing too gloomy although there certainly is also place for some more somber moments.
The whole region is experiencing a spirit of optimism as threats are low and trade and manufacturing are high.

As for WonderWaffle's paladin:
I like the concept but I'm not quite sure if it's 100% fitting as Asmodeus' domain is tyranny after all.
Maybe another more somber deity so, like DeJoker suggested, Kelemvor or Tempus.
I'm not completely opposed to an evil character though as long as it's not some kind of "I'm gonna kill this guy because I'm evil"-character.
If you need any more suggestions just ask away.

A request for Scrol - would you be willing to work some Hexblade/Raven Queen interest or involvement into this expedition? I think it would work well for my patron to just steer my character into getting on the boat without explaining what their ultimate intentions are, but it would be a nice payoff if it eventually turned out there was a good reason why they wanted their pawn in place. Just a minor part in some grander scheme - happy to discuss ideas if you like, or feel free to surprise me!

@WonderWaffle
Another idea I just had: Paladin's in 5e don't necessarily have to follow a deity. So if you want to play a somewhat evil paladin your character could follow an order who wants to have order and peace in the area. In the eyes of the order the best way to do this is to expand its power.
Not by any means necessary but if it can choose between feeding the poor or gaining a favor with a noble it will do the latter.
@kadeton
Sure sounds like a nice role playing opportunity. Do you have anything specific in mind or are you okay if your character receives some kind of order from time to time?

Nothing specific, though I'll try to work a "command" to join the expedition into the character's backstory. I like the idea of the Hexblade (as a patron) being enigmatic and mysterious - sending signs, dreams, and other shadowy hints to ensure that the character is in the right place at the right time (to suit the Hexblade's purposes, not for their own benefit) without issuing explicit orders. The character will often have no idea why they feel compelled to go somewhere or do something, and will simply have to follow their instincts and see where it leads.

Gotcha! I was mostly going off of how Asmodeus was being described in the SCAG (granting reprieve to people who've done something terrible, making deals, granting boons for a price, et cetera), but I totally see where you're coming from. If we're going for something more light-hearted, I totally agree that it's not tonally appropriate for the Paladin to go around saying "fear not, for we shall assuage you of this great and terrible evil... but afterwards, you and I will have a nice chat about my lord and savior, Satan." Obviously not that comical, but you get the gist.

Anywho, I'm rambling. Someone more pure, noble and positive. Should have something up today-ish if all goes well :D

I didn't end up including it in her backstory, but the reason she's on the boat is that an old folk song had been going round and round in her head for days. She has no idea where she heard it from. She was walking along the docks and absent-mindedly singing the last lines of the chorus:

So raise a glass and sing along, be jolly while you can,
For once he leaves the town, the wand'rer won't be back again!

When she saw the name of the boat that was loading up to depart, she immediately knew she had to get on board, so she simply walked up the gangplank and handed some coin to the captain without even asking where they were headed.

Just looked through all the characters we have until now and approved them.
I sense some great roleplaying potential here. Looking forward to bring those characters to life
Apr 21, 2021 8:06 pm
Promise I'm nearing completion. Working on this Ffolk Order of Ancients Paladin of the Earthmother concept. Should be ready Soon(tm).
Apr 22, 2021 12:34 am
Busy last few days will try to address the character tonight if all goes well -- worst case will be this weekend
Apr 22, 2021 1:10 am
WonderWaffle I was wondering if we might be colleagues and/or friends? As I will be playing a Cleric of Oghma and I believe that means we are both from the same city.
Apr 22, 2021 5:32 am
No need to stress yourself.
I'm planning to start around the weekend but if you need a little more time that's no problem

Alrighty. Submitted Almes Mistleheart for approval. Sorry for the delay. I work in medical so some nights I just crash, haha. Let me know if it needs any adjustments, and I can hop right on that.

So WonderWaffle would like to outline a relationship prior to the game starting I am guessing you come from the same city that my character does and it seems viable that we would have teamed up on the mission for our city counselors. Yes / No ??

I'm so sorry. I only just realized you asked me this earlier, and I totally missed it. So cliff notes: Almes is essentially a highlander bumpkin from the Moonshaes who heard the call from the Earthmother/Chauntea in his dreams, taking to her service and is on a divine errand. But I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of having a shared background. I had another concept as I was working on Almes for a Half-Orc Fighter (Champion); a sort of hometown hero type of character striving to prove themselves in the eyes of his peers. Maybe they had a poor run in and the only thing keeping them from biting the big one was your characters' timely intervention during a time of crisis?

EDIT: In retrospect, having given it some more thought, I think the idea of having a local boy in lieu of some sort of odd pilgrim might be the simpler route. I know you're trying to get this going by the weekend, and I give you my solemn word I'll have this character done today, Scrol. Super-swearsies :D

Okay WonderWaffle my character is a Dwarf Forge Cleric who Worships Oghma but also pays homage to Gond also called Moradin by Dwarves -- it would be an interesting duo

At work and unsure how to make notes, but can totally get behind this. I'll be leaving a bit early so should have everything finished shortly after I get back, and we can hash out the finer details. Again, appreciate the patience.

Alright. Raskell Thornwood, LG Half-Orc Fighter & Guild Artisan. Kind-hearted ex-militiaman from Bridgeton with dreams of owning his own tavern, adventuring and selling his skills as a sword-for-hire as a way to pay off his crippling debt to the Guild of Culinary Savants. Swingin' steel and fixin' meals for fun and profit!

P.S. Thanks Queni :)

Okay, I'm really excited for this so let's get started ^^
I've opened the Prologue thread.
May 3, 2021 11:09 pm
Hello all, what classes have we got other than fighter and cleric? I was thinking of making a Ranger.
May 3, 2021 11:26 pm
Welcome!

So far we have 2x fighters (1 melee, 1 ranged), bard, and warlock.

I'm not sure what class DeJoker is playing. A cleric with forge domain? (apologies if I got that wrong)
May 3, 2021 11:47 pm
OK time to roll

Edit: OK then 9, 14, 12, 13, 14, 12

May 4, 2021 12:33 am
OK I am going to make a Halfling Ranger (Outlander) Archetype Hunter
May 4, 2021 5:47 pm
Decent rolls you have there ^^

Okay a halfiling ranger is inbound. As soon as you're finished you can jump right into action in the story thread. If there should be any inconsistencies with the character we'll fix them on the fly

EDIT: Just read the OOC thread. It would be a nice introduction if your character pushed DeJoker's charakter, Solra, on her floatsam to the shore.
May 4, 2021 6:05 pm
How interesting owing ones life to an even shorter folk ;) -- I hate calling them halflings as what does it mean to be half a ling and besides no one even knows what a ling is. I much prefer Hin (another DnD name for the race) or even Hobbit
May 4, 2021 11:03 pm
OK I am having a brain fart and can't think of the Halfling deities name... Brandi something someone please give me a hand please
May 4, 2021 11:33 pm

I've seen that "Reroll Aces" option catch people out so many times, and up until recently I'd never even played in a game which used it as a rolling mechanic. Don't worry - just about everyone assumes that it means "Reroll ones" instead of "Max results explode" when they're starting out on GP. ;)

Excellent! I just approved your character. Great work ^^

You can post now

I don't know if you read the posts in the story thread so here's a quick summary:
You all were on a ship that was on the way to ruins, presumably hired for a job there. The ship was crushed by a sudden wave and you swam ashore.
Some kind of frog people took most of the survivors prisoner, so the group followed their tracks to their camp/hometown. A herald came out of the town, greeted the group and informed them that they trespassed in their lands.

In order to introduce your character let's say that you were washed ashore too but on a different place. You were looking for survivors, found the tracks, followed them and found the group that's now playing good guard/bad guard with the herald
May 27, 2021 1:07 am
Whose playing? Solra is serious ;)
May 27, 2021 1:44 am
Solra is being surprisingly protective of Melianne, considering their rocky start. XD You'll give her the wrong idea. :P
May 27, 2021 4:20 pm
Not really she has sworn to protect Melianne and Korrin due to recent incidents and she takes that seriously
Jul 23, 2021 4:28 pm
Scrol says:
#snip.
Before I create a character I want to confirm if you really need another melee frontline character for the party. Otherwise I would like to make a ranged fighter but having a reach weapon as a secondary...

We currently have a bard, a fighter, a ranger and a warlock so we are rather on the ranged-combat side.
But I'm not forcing any kind of character on you. I can work with a rather squishy group too.

Ouchy. Tough rolls. If you want to you can re-roll the 7 or switch it out for a 12.

Your rolls could open up the possibility for great rp but I don't want anyone to feel useless or lagging behind the group.
Jul 28, 2021 5:37 pm
Thanks. I'll probably take the 12. I have not decided on a race yet, but I am definitely going with a Tempest Cleric. I would like the PC to have a sailing back story. May I use the Marine background from Ghosts of Saltmarsh (below)? And is Valkur available as a deity?

Marine
Skill Proficiencies Athletics, Survival
Tool Proficiencies Vehicles (water, land)

Equipment: A dagger that belonged to a fallen comrade, a folded flag emblazoned with the symbol of your ship or company, a set of traveler's clothes, and a belt pouch containing 10 gp.

Feature: Steady
You can move twice the normal amount of time (up to 16 hours) each day before being subject to the effect of a forced march (see "Travel Pace" in chapter 8 of the Player's Handbook). Additionally, you can automatically find a safe route to land a boat on shore, provided such a route exists.
Jul 28, 2021 6:13 pm
Okay, marine background is alright. It also fits the setting as the river Galfer is an important trading route for the four cities, so your character could've come by boat into the region.
If you want to worship Valkur you can.
Jul 28, 2021 6:28 pm
Thanks. My idea is that a traumatic incident inspired him to seek a religious vocation.
Jul 28, 2021 8:36 pm
My PC is human. For additional language purposes, what other races commonly trade along the river?
Jul 28, 2021 10:03 pm
Submitted character, Krenmuth, who is mostly finished. Still need the back story, personality traits, etc. but I don't want to hold up the adventure while I finish it up.

Hear, hear! Glad to see you again in another game, rpgventurer. :D Also, a shanty-loving character? My bardess will be delighted.

And hello to you, mormegil! I don't think we've played together before, but looking forward to doing so here. :D Love the character backstory; I wonder how well the teamwork learning plans of Scags will go... (Especially considering our group's fantastic lack of teamwork during negotiations earlier. XD)

@FlyingSucculent, thank you. Looking forward to RPing with you again. If your bardess flirts with my PC, it's OK with me. Just be forewarned, he is more interested in getting the job done than finding romance.

@Scrol, my PC is essentially done except for the second language. I just added an avatar. I will add more details to his back story if I have the time.

Going to get the 4d6 rolls out of the way, then start muddling over options with the other new folks as they arrive.

4d6 : (1541) = 11 - 1 = 10
4d6 : (4412) = 11 - 1 = 10
4d6 : (2625) = 15 - 2 = 13
4d6 : (5551) = 16 - 1 = 15
4d6 : (5352) = 15 - 2 = 13
4d6 : (6644) = 20 - 4 = 16

Final Array: 16, 15, 13, 13, 10, 10.

All in all, not bad! Initial thoughts were more towards a frontliner (totem barb or a fighter of some bent).

Hey hey. Welcome to the game!

So we've got some decent rolls here.
As things stand Dramasailor is leaning towards a frontliner, Highlord is eyeing a ranger and Khulod isn't sure yet.

If you need any help just shoot me a message or post here.
We currently have a battle going on and after that I can probably introduce your characters. So no need to hurry ;)
Feb 20, 2022 10:10 pm
Hmmm.
Fighter/Barbarian frontliner
Ranger (assuming ranged or switch-hitter)
bard is frontline/support (rapier/cantrip)
cleric looks to be melee (warhammer)
warlock is frontline (hexblade)

Looks like I can get away with something standing in the back which helps with single stat builds. I'm thinking of a High Elf Arcane Trickster right now. An archaeologist of sorts obsessed with digging up relics from the ancient elven civilizations which are obviously superior to anything we have today. Short of going to Myth Drannor any sort of place that once held an elven presence might be worthwhile to him. After all, he has centuries..
Feb 21, 2022 11:15 am
Seems doable.
Keep in mind that the ruins where you are have neither been confirmed nor denied of being of elven origin.
But your hero can certainly be convinced that only elves could create such magnificent ruins
Feb 21, 2022 6:33 pm
Welcome Dramasailor, Khulod, and Highlord!
Feb 23, 2022 7:42 pm
Okay I've looked through your characters.
Highlord's character seems fine.
@Dramasailor Your character seems fine too but you put 'Fighter' as your class even though you apparently rolled up a barbarian. If you fix that you're good to go.
@Khulod How far are you with your character creation?
Feb 23, 2022 7:54 pm
D'oh. Had a fighter open on the other screen at the time. Fixed!
Feb 23, 2022 8:19 pm
I just finished and submitted the sheet.
Feb 24, 2022 11:26 pm
