OOC:
Good point, Disadvantage would be there for EVERYONE.

So if everyone is making their own check, it's with Disadvantage (and a Group Check will almost assuredly fail). The single check with Help would at least negate Disadvantage and be a "normal" check.

Rolen raises his head from his bedding as the howling comes closer.
Wha's happenin'? he asks with a sleepy voice.
He sits up and turns his head.
Whatever's howlin' there seems to be close... he mumbles
He tries to determine the position of the wolves or whatever is howling nearby...

So, it is Marie's turn at the watch before they're nearby. Does Rolen still want to make the effort to try to locate them?

If so, go ahead and roll Perception (don't forget Disadvantage for Exhaustion).

Marié trusts her alarms and sleeps

OOC:
3 out of 4 is enough to fail the Group Check.
It seems to make the most sense that the howls are those of wolves. None of you know enough about wolves though to say what kind, or how many, or anything like that.

Timberline is maybe 100 meters down-mountain, and surely whatever is making the howls is beyond the timberline, but Rolen is unable to tell where or what direction it's coming from exactly.
OOC:
Note that even though it's only 100 meters to timberline, the creature(s) would either have to be able to fly, or have a native climb movement rate, to avoid having to take maybe 500 meters of dog-legging trail to your spot.

Nothing is actively coming at you. The howls are very close. That is all you know right now. So you can be as awake and as ready as you want to be, but we're not about to enter initiative or anything right now unless you guys initiate it.

Better have some rocks or arrows ready if anything decided to come charging at us. I guess it's wolve and therefore we should easily be able to fend them off because of the wide strip of open land they'd have to cross

Rolen sits down on his bedroll again and waits for any signs of approaching enemies

Marabi straps the shield to her arm, then wanders over to the cliff edge. She feels her way carefully in the dark, tapping her feet until she feels close enough to the edge to hear someone climbing.

Satisfied with her position, she settles into a crouch on her haunches and rests her head against the shield. At least the wood of the shield is warmer than the rocky ground.

She can’t remember ever feeling so miserable.

Tired, exhausted, and greatly annoyed Marié gets to her feet and draws her mother's longsword.

Flipping elves, flipping plants, flipping wizards and their flipping conjured crap, and now flipping wolfs! She mutters
WILL YOU ALL PISS OF THIS FLIPPING MOUNTAIN! She yells

Beleros is the last to stir, he can't remember the last time he was so tired, or slept so deeply. Seeing all the activity of the others, he a assumes they're under attack and grabs his spear.

But after a moment, pauses. Wolves are howling?

"ummmm..... wolves howl at night....." he says to the others.

Rolls

WIS - perception (disadvantage) - (1d20, 1d20)

1d20 : (6) = 6

1d20 : (18) = 18

Although the sleep may be light and intermittent, and although the watchers may be on edge their entire watch, the night passes without greater event.

The morning mountain views are largely shrouded by low clouds as everyone stirs and finally arises, and the sun is barely a pale orange disk through the mist. After you all break your fast, what camp there was is packed away, and you're soon back on the trail.

It is not far to the oread's peak now, but the trail only exists for a quarter of the way before it breaks off toward the mine, and you must make your own ways to the peak. So, much like yesterday, the going its slow, and technical, and treacherous in places. But you all take your time, focus on one foot Infront of the other, and slowly but surely you're able to reach your destination perhaps a bit before noon.

The peak is accessed just around a bend, and you have a moment to collect yourselves and make any preparations that you might want...

Why are we doing this again? Oh yes. We hope that Oread have any idea of what afflicts the valley and how to make it better
OOC:
Are we going with 2 or 3 levels of extortions?

"i do not know. I do not care. Verevulf can eat the Alderman so long as I do not have to walk back there."

Marabi replies to Marie sulkily.

"I do not know what the Alderman expected. If he wanted heroes then he should have paid some heroes."

She munches on some more rations and wonders whether they should tell everybody in Five Lions to move to Amn.

Everyone except Marabi has 1 level of Exhaustion now after your Long Rests, and she has 2.

Rolen sits down on a rock and tries to catch his breath. He is not used to such exhaustive activities.
Don't we have a true hero among us...? Rolen answers to Marabi's comment, points his thumb at Belaros and smiles impishly at her.
He looks at the place where the oread is supposed to live, gets up, collects some stones and begins to lay out some circular patterns on the ground with them.
Three circles overlap. Meet in the middle and close the gap. Sprinkle with soil from mother Earth and nature'll eliminate all dearth he remembers the rhyme is stepmom taught him

As Rolen performs the ritual, it definitely tickles at each of your memory banks. It's similar to a rhyme, or part of a rhyme, or maybe exactly something you've each heard your nannies or Grands sing cheerfully in the past. Maybe as a part of a game? Or as background noise during simple childhood play?

Anyway Rolen speaks the words and by his motions, and posture, and look of satisfaction he must place belief or power in this thing that you understood to just be a nursery rhyme or child's jape.

The ritual takes a bit of time, but once it's complete it doesn't take long before something happens...

It begins as a small bulge in the ground, and quickly turns into a small sprout.

That sprout continues to push up out of the ground, and from below it - like the sprout were hairs on it's head - rises a plant-creature!

It is mottled and dark, and indeed, looks just like the animated shrubbery that you all have fought on two prior occasions now!

The thing shrieks, like splitting wood, once it's fully emerged! And it clearly tries to flee, but it is trapped within the bounds of the circinated stones that Rolen placed upon the ground! And so it curls up and lays on the ground, still creaking like branches in the wind...

"What manner of magic is THIS!?!" shouts Belaros (now wearing pants) drawing his sword.
Jul 20, 2021 10:10 pm
OOC:
I hope Belaros is wearing his pants, you're about 100 meters from the oread's place! 🤣

What the hells? Rolen, what did you just do?
Marié curiously examines the tree, but from outside Rolens circles.
