Rolling some dice.
Re-rolling 3d6. Should have only rerolled 2d6, seeing as for gold you don't get to reroll. In any case that bumps his INT from 6 to 9.
Applied with the character sheet.

BACKGROUND
Third son of a cobbler living in the poorer parts of Specularum, Arnulf did not long attempt to follow in his father's footsteps. He was particularly incompetent in the trade, and was, from a young age too agitated and impatient to assist in most tasks, with the exception of those requiring brute strength and stamina. In early adolescence, he was constantly embroiled in brawls with other kids of their rather rough neighborhood.
This constant exposure to violence brought him to the attention of one of the local thugs, who offered him 'employment' of a sort of bruiser in the employ of the local street gangs. At this point, his family cut all ties with him, his father telling him to never set foot in their house again. His 'career' as an enforcer for the local criminal gang was short-lived, however: he was soon assigned to a covert raid in the territory of a rival gang, and the operation went awfully wrong. Not only did he fail in the mission but most of his crew were beaten or killed, and he only made it out alive by being captured by the city guard. He was condemned to a seven year sentence of hard labour on board one of Karameikos' galleys. Branded and humiliated in. public square, Arnulf was taken aboard the ship which would become his home with a mind that was a blur and a cacophony of conflicting thoughts and hopes.
He spent four of those years on the oars, helping propel the Duke's navy in all sorts of engagements, but witnessing them all from a bleak, dark and filthy bench in the entrails of the Silver Sovereign. He had begun to realize the error of his ways as soon as he was tried and convicted, and longed for being readmitted into his family, and honest society more generally. He gradually gained the confidence and trust of the galley's officers and was given — around the fifth year onboard — the possibility of serving his sentence in a more varied set of roles in the galley. He realized that service in the military might actually be what fit his particular skill set, but was quickly disabused of this hope when it was pointed out to him that former convicts weren't usually accepted into the Duke's service. When he had finally served his full sentence, he was allowed to disembark in a foreign port (in the Minrothad Guilds) and immediately sought to gain employment with a local mercenary company. After a couple of years of training and service in which he did not see major action, he had earned enough to buy the equipment a sell-sword required, and passage back to Karameikos. When his contract with the Company was up for renewal, he humbly declined, and sought a ship heading back to Specularum.
