Not a pitch for a specific game exactly but I was wondering if anyone else backed the new Twilight 2000 4th Edition from Free League? And whether anyone wants to have a go at figuring out the rules across a scenario or two?
May 29, 2021 11:06 pm
I did, and have played the Alpha in a one-shot. Haven't taken the time to look over the final ruleset yet, but I sure liked what I saw in the Alpha...

Didn't back it, but I was a fan of the original and I would love to give it a go if the system is pretty easy to understand. I am told that it uses the same engine as the Alien RPG?

I didn't back it, but I've always been a fan of the original system.

I believe the same company that made the Alien game made the new version of the Twilight 2000.

Both are by Free League, indeed, and while both use the "Year Zero Engine," the system is pretty heavily modified for T2K. The Swedes always tune the YZE from game to game, but this has some larger changes, and incorporates some cool bits from the very complex original game -- like a coolness under fire rating that you will be frequently rolling. This is a deadly game...

I backed the kickstarter, and yes, definitely up for a scenario or two!

So sounds like there's a few of us interested. I'm fairly new to Gamersplane and haven't run any games here yet. Anyone else fancy running it? I could probably have a think about it in a few weeks if no one else is up for running it. I'd need to have a good read through the rules. I had the boxed set of 1st Edition back in the day but I don't think I ever played it. Had a few games of 2.2, mostly Merc 2000 but I can't remember much apart from it being crunchy. Nowadays I'm not too interested in a military simulationist vibe but I think some post-apocalyptic survival would be fun.

I can give running some consideration once July rolls around and my schedule clears up a bit, but I'd also happily play.

Give me a week or two to review the rules and then maybe we could think about trying something. I'll post back here.

Okay, bit crunchier than I was expecting. Who is up for a bit of a casual play to get some understanding of the rules? I'm thinking traditional Poland campaign, escape from Kalisz style

So this is a fictionalised Poland in an alternative history year 2000. I intend to use a hybrid of the 4th Edition and the 1st and 2nd Edition settings. I have no military experience and my focus will be on learning the rules and having a bit of fun. Not military simulationism or accurately reflecting the forces or the Poland of the late 1990s. If you're Polish and familiar with the areas we play in please don't be offended. Any part of Poland I know would be a smoking ruin of nuclear strikes so this is all guesswork.

I suggest a relatively relaxed posting regime - maybe a few times a week initially to give a chance to check the rules. We'll all be in this together. This is my first game on GP bit I have GMd PbP elsewhere.

I'd be in for playing casual with you running/exploring the rules. :)

sounds like a very good idea - I'm still very interested

Count me in

Here too, and I'd say to not be too put off by the tactical movement / map stuff -- I played the game live in its alpha state completely theater of the mind, and it ran perfectly well. I still need to look at the finished product.
Jun 13, 2021 6:49 pm
I prefer around 3 in a PbP game but I reckon up to 6 for T2K. So that's Esidrix, therecusant, Squadfather44, and Harrigan for 4 and WhtKnt has first refusal on one of the remaining 2 places.

Thought I'd use hex maps and just screenshot and post them online. If I'd had the physical game I'd have done it physically and taken photos. I think not everyone has the game and I can't find a quick start online so we'll have to talk through character creation. The Kickstarter gives some of the basic rule concepts.

I've created a forum and sent out some invites. Anyone else interested?
Jun 17, 2021 10:48 pm
excellent!

I sent you a pm

So we're full for the moment with Machiabelly onboard. I'll post here if we have any drop outs.
Jun 20, 2021 6:00 am
If you're interested I think I still have most of the original T2K suppliments. I worked in a hobby shop at the time when GDW was publishing them and I'm pretty sure I have maps for Krakow, the Vistula Corridor and Warsaw. It's weird to think that when I started playing that game 2000 was still 15 or 16 years out, the Cold War was still in full swing and those events were still kind of on the table.

Thanks, I actually have the pdfs of the first four or five supplements for 1st Edition (and all the 2nd Edition ones).
Jun 25, 2021 8:07 pm
Someone's had to back out so we have another place available. Just finishing character creation if anyone is interested.
Nov 26, 2021 11:24 pm
A few people have dropped out so we're open for recruitment if anyone's interested.

I am definitely interested! What type of new recruits looking for?
Nov 26, 2021 11:43 pm
What would you like to play? Currently the team are mostly Americans but there's plenty of scope to pick up whoever on the way.
Nov 26, 2021 11:46 pm
Do you need some prior experience to play this? I've been kicking around the idea of buying this box set at my FLGS, but haven't yet. Wasn't sure if it would be something my group would play before I drop $60 on it...
Nov 26, 2021 11:50 pm
Nope, we've got most of the rules in the thread now. Took us a while to get comfortable with them as they're quite crunchy, and we've made some house rules to facilitate PbP, but I'm happy talking you through it.
Nov 27, 2021 12:24 am
Yeah, I'd totally be down with trying. I tried reading 2.2 and 1 but it was a bit of a mess to grasp, but I've been listening to the New Game Who Dis show and they did an actual play and it seemed a lot less crunchy and more manageable.

Is there a medical sort around?

I had in mind a country-boy type who joined the military to get experience/funds to become an EMT while he went to medical school.

So a medic not directly military, but recalled when the war broke out.

Our medic had to pull out of the game.

Funnily enough our last medic had a similar career path in mind. That'll be fine if you use the Medic archetype, if you use the Lifepath approach there is no EMT civilian career and I suggested just using the combat medic career and handwaving it as civilian EMT for that term.

I haven't seen that, I must have a listen. I've been following the AARPG podcast although they're using the alpha rules I think.

It is definitely less crunchy than 1st/2nd edition (not sure about 3rd as I've never played it, though I do have a copy somewhere). However, for a Free League game it is still pretty crunchy, particularly combat. That slowed stuff down initially so we've made some house rules, particularly around coolness under fire.
Nov 27, 2021 9:41 am
So I'll invite Knighthawke and funfungiguy and close recruitment. Then we can discuss character creation in the game forum.
Nov 28, 2021 8:00 pm
The new one is crunchy, but it's -- you know. Playable. =]
Nov 29, 2021 12:48 pm
I always loved this game. Still have openings?
Nov 30, 2021 12:11 am
I'm sorry Jomsviking, we've just filled back to to 6 but I'll update here if anyone drops out and give you first refusal.
