I was talking to Runekyndg last week before our interview and we stumbled upon an idea. Based upon an observation that many (most) registered users have never made a single post, yet they were obviously interested enough to initially register, there must be something that they're expecting but not finding. What if there was a quick way to show them what to expect?
I want to do an intro video now that Keleth might find suitable to put on the front page (if you're not logged in). Basically three to five minutes on what to expect when you create an account.
So I hashed out a draft video and solicited some feedback. The public forums here aren't great for extended dialogs on multiple related subjects, so I whipped up a quick free public forum.
Dialog for an Introductory Video
The video is my first draft at the process. The proposed dialog is there, too. I'd like solicit feedback to make this the best explanatory video we can about what it is we do. That way, people that join know what to expect and aren't burnt by confusion or the seeming complexity.
All comments are welcome.

hi and welcome to gamersplane.com
You have found our site, you've read the "what is play by post" blurb and you're interested. This video is intended to give you some expectations of what you should find.
Sign up or if you've already signed up log in. Once you've logged in you'll find yourself at the home page. here's a few things that you should you should know. first of all play by post is asynchronous which means that the other users are not online at the same time as you are except by coincidence, and they may be located in very different timezones or sleep schedules. Whenever you post you should expect hours and sometimes a few days before you get a response. once you've understood that then the pace should make sense.
Here’s what a game looks like. You can see players and the GM each contributing description, dialog, dice rolling, and out of character discussions
Now that you're signed up, you probably want to play a game. If you just randomly apply to games, you're unlikely to be accepted, so I'll show you where to go to find games that are accepting new players.
let's go to forums
Let's go to the forums. now, since this is play-by-post, all of the action happens here. Up to here we have public forums for discussing a variety of topics. Down here, the forums for the games you're in will display. If you haven't already gotten into some and want to give it a try, go here, to the Games Tavern, to find one that's looking for new players
In the games tavern you'll find interest checks and recruitment. New games that start or are looking for players to replace former players will often recruit here.
You might see an interest check or possible recruitment for a new or existing game. let's click this one. There's a dialogue going on about new players and about people joining this game
now i don't see in here anywhere a link to that game. How do we find games?
let's go to games, all games, join a game
you'll find here games where there's an internal tag that's been set to open which means that if there's space new players can directly apply but it doesn't necessarily mean that the GM is currently recruiting for additional players
so if we look for 5th edition D&D games, filter, then we can see just those
so this game says they have 10 of a possible 17 players, five posts per week is their expectation you can see
I see two gm's and the ten current players some of them have character sheets others don't so it might still be in progress of being made. there's a button here that says apply to game and you could just click apply but best practice is to post in the interest check thread first and establish a dialogue with the game master or if you've just found an interesting game and you haven't found the interest checks for it you can click the game master's name, then click send private message and now you could say the name of the game and say i'm a new member to gamer's plane i'm really excited to join a game i like the idea of yours could you let me know if there are any spots open for players and then hit send once you've done that you'll find messages in your avatar button in the top right click that you'll see messages you'll see an inbox and a outbox for your sent items will be in the out box when the gm responds which again might be a few hours or maybe longer then you'll find it in the inbox and you'll see a notification on your avatar in any screen
if we go to forums guides, general you'll see here new gp member guide. moderator Naatkinson has provided this comprehensive list of what you should find when you're on gp
Reading this will definitely help you understand what you're seeing and how to do key things
One of his first items is go to introduction forums the other way to find that is general chat introductions so here you can create a new thread and tell us a little about yourself
we're excited to play with new players and the more we know about you the more excited we'll be
This will be a slow gradual process. we all want to join new games right away, maybe we expect to click on the site, jump into a game and start making a character or start role-playing but just remember that we're all traveling at the speed of a forum and so things take a little bit of time. it's worth it and i hope you join us thank you
