Kingdoms are all around us. They are the communities that unite us.
Your Kingdom can be any group or organization that interests you. You could play a Wild West frontier town, a colony ship crawling to a distant star, or a sprawling Empire holding conquered peoples beneath its thumb.

Hello, everyone.

I’m looking for up to 3 players interested in a rules-light narrative-heavy experience for a game of Kingdom. This is a GM-less storygame about leading a community — from the same designer as Microscope. Elements like genre, setting and tone will be chosen via a collaborative process at the beginning of the game, so bring any creative ideas you have.

Posting rate is still up in the air — I imagine we’ll wait and see what makes sense for this system. Kingdom is a simple game to learn, so anyone should be able to jump in, regardless of RPG experience.

This looks super interesting! Is it necessary to have the book? I can't really buy it right now, but I would love to try it, or at least observe. :D The actual game examples they have on the site look great, but it would be nice to see the actual process...

Just taking the chance to tell you how much I enjoyed your drawing that was on Discord

Curious to know if this follows quality leadership principles or more like the power hungry bureaucratic junk we have today -- yeah our democracy while faulty is still the best thing to date but then we have a mix of quality leadership and self-serving bureaucrats -- is this some how portrayed within the guidelines?

The rules are simple enough that I could explain as we go. The book even has some guidelines for teaching the rules in this way. On the other hand — Is it considered kosher to share digital copies of game rulebooks? Because that’s an option as well.

Thank you! :)

It all depends on how you play it. Most elements of the game are consensus-driven, but there is a mechanic for overruling other players’ decisions, which then adds to the "crisis" meter for the community. I suppose you could say that the power-hungry politicking aspect of leadership is simulated by that mechanic — albeit in a fairly abstract way.

Okay so how, with it being GM-less, are the outside elements introduced to the pristine government ;) being run by the players??

Not sure what is the general consensus, but I think it is like sharing a physical book with players. As long as it's for personal use, it's probably alright? Then again, you can just summarize, especially if they have rules for that. :D

Anyway, I'd love to play then, if you don't mind a new player! I'll go and apply.

I don't think sharing full copyrighted books is really kosher (though I guess nobody here can stop you from doing that outside of public threads), but I usually copypaste relevant rules passages from the book into my game forums. Not enough to make owning the book superfluous but enough that people can play without owning the actual book.

Good questions — the primary gameplay consists players taking turns introducing scenarios that require a decision to be made — crossroads, in game parlance. Oftentimes this will be a problem the community has to overcome. So, even though there’s no single GM, players do have to put on their GM hats a little bit.

Approved!

Gotcha — that’s what I’ll try to do then.

Callan, best of luck in running Kingdom!

Callan played in a recent 5e game I ran and he was a tremendous player. He made rich, detailed posts and was utterly dependable. Also, shout-out to Astroloma who is going to be a player in this game who is equally dependable and awesome! I really like both of their writing styles.

Thank you, Len!

We have four players now, including me, which is about the number I was hoping for. I'm open to people hopping in late, but we do plan on starting shortly.
