Welcome! (Start here)

Hi everyone!

Thanks for joining our game! This thread is meant to help us figure out where to begin.

If you're new to Gamer's Plane, check out this awesome guide for new players by one of the most prolific members on the site, Naatkinson.

Also, if you don't own a D&D 5e Player's Handbook, you'll want to download a free copy of the Basic Rules, which gives you all the rules to play the game as well as the classic races (Dwarf, Elf, Hafling, Human) and classes (Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, Wizard) to build a character with. Don't worry, you don't have to read the whole thing, but you might like knowing where you can look things up.

So, what do you need to do?

1. Check out the safety tools thread, read up on our safety tools, and tell us what topics you want to handle with care in this game.

2. Check out the setting info. This is open and you can expand upon it if you wish.

3. Check out the character creation thread and start designing your character. Ask lots of questions and tell us how it's coming!

4. Practice rolling dice and posting in the Posting Practice thread!

5. Go ahead and say hi in a reply to this post! Tell us a little bit about yourself - whatever you feel comfortable with. I'll start:

I'm Len, one of your Dungeon Masters. I'm from Vancouver Canada, where I spend my days teaching Computer Science and being the proud father of twins. I'm also a life-long gamer, playing tabletop roleplaying games since the 1980s. I took a pretty long break from the hobby after university. When D&D Fifth Edition came out in 2014, I decided to get back in. I'm really excited to be DMing this game with Jabes, who has been my mentor and friend on Gamers Plane ever since I got here.

Hi, folks! I'm Jabes, pastry chef and RPG addict from the Philippines. I've played RPGs since 1987, including nearly every edition of D&D. Since joining Gamers' Plane in early 2015 I've discovered numerous new game systems, and made many new friends, Len among them. We continue to learn from each other as well as from other members of the community. We'll be your Dungeon Masters for this D&D 5e intro game; we hope to make this a fun learning experience!

Welcome, mormegil and Demagor!

I'm Demagor, commonly referred to as Robert in the real world. I live the thrilling life of a Customer Service Manager for a trash company (and yes, it's true, we get all the girls). Born and raised in Miami, my wife and I one day decided Hey, let's move west and we ended up in California. I've been here since '03 and have grown fond of the place.

The gaming bug bit me when at age 14, my mother bought me a D&D Basic box set to keep me "busy"; little did she know! Now, 33 years later, I'm still at it. My progress has been, admittedly, a bit linear; I started off with D&D Basic, moved onto AD&D 2E, toyed with 3E for a half-second, then found my fourth love (wife, dog, guns come first- in that order)... 3.5. That's been my bread and butter, and while I've tinkered with the occasional other game in the past (Star Frontiers, Twilight: 2000 (1st Ed), Marvel Super Heroes RPG (1st Ed), M&M, Aberrant, The Window, Battletech), I always come back home. So, while I would confess that many of the things I've heard about 5E are a bit offputting, I want to give it a true, genuine shot and see if I like it. This amazing thing you two are putting together is really going to help me; and I'm thankful for your work and your time.

Also, as you may or may not know, I'm running a pair of 3.5 games here- would I be able to bug you guys on matters of posting/creating/running a game (from within GP, not so much based on the game's rule) as well? Or should I instead focus that elsewhere?
Aug 15, 2021 4:01 am
My formerly-IRL group played 3.5e for 10 years. Good times!

I'd be happy to help you with any GMing questions, though I think it'd be better to have that discussion over at the GM Mentoring Project. Post your questions there and I'll do my best to answer. The best part is, you get to pick the minds of the countless brilliant DMs in the GP community.

But, if you prefer a more private discussion with Len and myself, I wouldn't be averse. We can set that up somewhere.

I have a lot less knowledge of 3.5, but hope to try it some day. Also, we're not here to sell you in 5e, and if you end up preferring 3.5 then we won't begrudge you one bit! I'm happy to help here with any questions or elsewhere too 🙂

I'm a fellow compatriot of Jabes (as he already knows ^^) and my experience with D&D is very recent...yes there was that time while I was in elementary school way back in '95 that I stumbled upon a group of students in the library playing some strange game (might be AD&D 2nd ed) who spooked me because I saw one of them behind a folder holding a large book with a demonic-looking creature called a Baatezu or something. So that was technically my first encounter with Demons & Devils---er I mean Dungeons & Dragons ^^

Other than the videogames set in the Forgotten realms settings (Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale to name a few) there weren't many places here in the Philippines to learn about and play D&D. Until I encountered it again in a hobby shop and this time for the 3.5 rules...I bought some books and just read it but found no large community playing it (at least in where I live) so I focused instead in Magic the Gathering and forgot it. Fast forward to now in the post Critical Role timeline I was fortunate to have the core books ''bequeathed'' to me by a friend who I met during my MTG days and was also a former D&D player. He moved out of the country a couple of yers ago passing the torch to me and I was supposed to find a gaming group to play D&D with when COVID-19 hit...

So here I am after I google-searched for ''how to play D&D online'' found PBP and the rest as they say is history...

TL;DR I'm new...and learning ^^

Welcome, Knifesedgegames!

Hi everyone. Knifesedge Games here. A lot of users call me KEG so feel free.

I'm an old geezer too, based in London I've been roleplaying since the early 80's and have been an almost perpetual GM. I run a few here on GP, notably Call of Cthulhu and Warhammer Fantasy 1e.

The last D and D I played seriously was AD&D, never touched 3,3.5 or 4 and have now started dipping into 5th edition, trying it out over the table with my daughter and recently started in bowlofspinach's game.

I usually try to keep my playing to one game but I'm making an exception for this one. Hopefully I won't get too overwhelmed.

Great to have you on board, KEG :) Let us know how it's going for you re: being overwhelmed and how we can help.

Welcome, Peindora!

I just realized that I didn't write anything.... Sorry....
Well my real name is Andris Celms. I was born and raised in Latvia and now (since 2010) I'm living in France with my gf and 2 sons. Tyraël and Samael. I'll let you guess where the names come from ;)
I started playing D&D when I was 12 or 14 I think (I'm 31 now). My friends wanted to play but didn't have a dm. So of course they decided that me with my overflowing imagination would be a good choice. Took some convincing cause I didn't want to read the hundreds of pages of rules. But they succeeded with the selling argument of the game having no limitations on imagination. Tried it, loved it! Played quite a few campaigns with them. Mostly as a DM often being a temporary player as well (I died a Lot). We were playing 3.5 btw.
And then I moved to France where I didn't know anyone and have never been able to find people to play with. I did a couple of campaigns on roll20 2 or 3 years ago. But they fell short due to nightmarish scheduling which turned into loss of interest.
Also I did quite a few non D&D RPs on forums, notably Eliteskills, when I was younger.
What else... I'm a cook by profession. I love games. I love Fantasy.
Eh, I need to stop writing, if you want to know anything, ask. I've got nothing to hide. Well, except how I got your phone number, address and bank account ;)
Aug 19, 2021 11:17 pm
I don't mind if you have my bank account. Please put more money in it?

Haha yeah! I fully expect balefire in that situation! XD

Well, for now they're still too young for that. Respectively 21 and 7 months old. Also we abbreviate their names half of the time.
