Dungeon World: Anyone interested?

It's a pretty great system, in my obviously established opinion. It's far more focused on storytelling and "failing forward" than systems like D&D (except possibly 5e) and Pathfinder which feel more like wargames with their tomes of rules for every situation and comparatively complex class systems.
In a nutshell, whenever you attempt to make a move (hit an enemy, fire an arrow, dodge out of the way, cast a spell, etc.) you roll 2d6 and add an ability modifier. So far, so good, right? Well, Dungeon World has a concept of "partial success". If you roll a 10+, you succeed at whatever you were trying to do without issue. If you roll a 7-9, you achieve an aforementioned partial success. 6- is failure (in an interesting way depending on the GM). The great thing about DW is that 7-9 range. As a GM, I can make a "move" in my own way that balanced out the PCs success. And it's entirely dependant on what they were attempting.
Casting a Spell? Well, a partial success means you can choose to lose control of the spell, lose the spell for the day (you don't lose a spell on a 10+), or take a -1 on casting going forward as you struggle to control your magic. Bashing someone with your hammer? Awesome! You hit!... and get hit back.
One really interesting thing as a GM is that I never roll a die. That also means no direct "monster attacks". Instead, I place the characters in a position they need to react to, "The iron golem awakes as it senses an intrusion. Still bound by the magics that create it, it lumbers forward intent upon crushing you beneath it's large, metallic fist. What do you do?"
The player can then react to it, "I'm obviously going to try and jump out of the way!" And we decide what move that would be, "Sounds like you're trying to Defy Danger with dexterity, roll for it."
"I got a 9 total. Crap."
"No, that's not bad. You manage to quickly sidestep, but trip over your feet in the effort! You find yourself hitting the ground and your sword escapes your grip, clattering across the floor. Gimli! You see your friend fall into a vulnerable position, about to be crushed by this magically fueled brute. What do you do?"
And so on... the idea is that the GM prevent a "front" that PCs can react to. Everything keeps moving forward, even if a PC "fails". No more, "Oh, you rolled a 4 for perception? You see your own feet and nothing else."
I can go on and on about Dungeon World. I completely fell in love when introduced to it and the liberal style of the rules and play allows me and my players to tell the stories we want without the heavy weight of Pathfinder or D&D 4e rules. You can check out all everything from the Rulebook for free at dungeonworldsrd.com. And to give you an idea of how freeing the system is and the numerous third-party classes, check out this list of 200 community made classes.

As far as I can tell, there's no way to subscribe to posts, so I don't know if anyone will see this, but I've played Dungeon World and I'd play it again. I might even run it, though I haven't really absorbed the GM side of the rules yet. But I have taken a lot of the approach to heart and I use aspects of it when I play 4th Edition. The weight of rules only matters if one is worried about upholding every single one of them.

Right now, the best way to find posts is the latest post feature on the top right of the main forums page. I have plans on adding a thread subscription feature, there's just so much to do!

No problem. It's just that with old threads, I don't know if the author is keeping track of responses.

I discovered DW this year and I love it! Awesome, awesome system! Just for context, my background is almost 30 years of D&D. So is anyone running a DW game on GP yet? I'd be really keen on joining!
Jul 9, 2015 3:58 am
Dungeon World's still not getting any love on GP? It's a shame. If only I had the guts to GM!
Jul 9, 2015 5:30 am
Dungeon World is on my reading list. I have the player side pretty figured out, but I'm still not 100% comfortable with the GM side. I like it though. I'd love to try it sometime.

So many games, so little time! I've heard lots of good things about Dungeon World. I really like the idea of partial success / failing forward, which I've enjoyed in the Fate and Freeform/Universal games I've GMed.

VERY interested in Dungeon World! Has anyone in this thread (or in the forums as a whole) been involved in a game here on GP yet? If not, is anyone willing to run? I'd be interested in playing. If no one wants to run, I'd be willing to step up - just be sure to keep in mind that I've run only one PbP, and played in one PbP, so my experience is limited.
Jul 20, 2015 8:24 am
I've only been here a few months but to my knowledge no one has run DW here yet. I've no GM experience but am VERY keen on playing (I've been in a few RL DW games but never PbP). If anyone sets up a game save me a spot. :-)
GP doesn't currently feature Dungeon World character sheets but the system is loose enough that it shouldn't be difficult just using a Custom sheet. ;-)

If people are still interested, I would be interested in running a one-shot using a dungeon starter.

Complete(?) core DW rules are available online though www.dungeonworldsrd.com or book.dwgazetteer.com.

Yes, it's a OGL game, but I haven't regretted the purchase, as they include every possible format, including Kindle which is super convenient.

I'm still interested, as well.
Incidentally, does GP have e-mail notifications for threads you've posted and/or subscribed to? I'd have replied sooner had I known.

Hold on... I just saw the Subscribe To Thread link at the top right of the page here. Hopefully that'll do the trick.

Glad to see there's some interest, I'll post a new thread tomorrow and hopefully we can get a game going!

Hi, I'm interested in playing too!
I'm a former DW GM, and it'd be nice to play for a change.

So... Dungeon World is interesting... I'm looking around for a character sheet with which to add to GP, but all I keep seeing is a character sheet per... class? Race? Seems to be indiscriminate in this game.
So... are there generic sheets? How can I get Dungeon World on GP?

As far as I am aware, there are no generic character sheets, at least official ones.

If there's nothing generic, I'm not sure how to do this. I may have to come up with a whole new system just to implement this.

Hi Keleth,
If it will help, here's my Dungeon World druid, and here's my ranger.
Roll20 has a generic Dungeon World character sheet. Here's a screenshot of my fighter.

This may be a time I make a char sheet and it'll need a few rounds of revision. It makes sense though (Roll20). Leave up categories, and players fill it in. I noticed the char sheets have all the details, but that may not be warranted here.

Any more movement on this? I'm still interested in playing, and would be more than happy to test. This will be my first ever PbP game on this site. :-)

Hello_Newman already started a game. http://gamersplane.com/games/84
Aug 17, 2015 6:20 pm
I'm showing the game as Open, but with 4 of 4 players in. Maybe contact him via PM and see if he'd take a 5th?
Aug 17, 2015 6:29 pm
Hm. Maybe the "Status: Open" loaded a bit too long for me to see. Message sent. Let's see.
Aug 18, 2015 12:06 am
Unfortunately, twice daily is a little too much for me - especially since I'm getting ready for a two-week vacation. Maybe next time I'll be able to participate. :-)
Question from the GP-newbie: When I click on the link to the game, I only see the "Game Details" screen. Is there anything else to the game at the moment? Can I see any posts or other conversations so far?
Thanks.

When at the Game Details page you should be able to see a red bar down at the bottom with a link to the actual game threads. It definitely shows up when you view the Game Details page on your laptop but on some phones (like mine) it's not there. Here's a link.
Aug 18, 2015 2:31 am
Yup, working on that... unfortunately the designer I hired wasn't able to come up with anything reasonable there. Maybe in a year when I've saved up enough, I can hire another designer and we can come up with something better, if I can't think of anything.

Too bad Hello Newman's game never got off the ground. Still hoping to see some DW action on GP sometime! :-)

Oh, no! It looks like the last post was August 17, unless I'm missing a secret page or something. I'm still interested in Dungeon World as well.

So far I've managed to resist the temptation to run a Dungeon World game (I don't saw DW, because that would clearly mean Fasa's "Doctor Who" from 1985, which I might also run someday). The two games I'm running already are keeping me busy. But it's SO tempting! If I start a game, I'll post a notice here.
I, too, signed up for HelloNewman's game, though he went inactive right when I applied, so I'm not showing up on the player's list. But as the 2nd oldest game, every day I see Moofsalot's post from the 17th is still the most recent activity in my forums list, and I think a little more about running a game of it myself...

There are currently two Dungeon World games on GP: Foolsmask's game, in which we are currently character building and world building, and Moofsalot's game, which still has one slot open, I think.
This makes me very happy! I'm hoping that with the increased interest this system will finally become a featured system on GP! :-)

I'm up for trying the system out, but I tried to apply but the button to apply doesn't do anything. D=
Update: Moofsalot invited me just have to think up a character. =D

If there is a generic one, I can get that up quicker, otherwise my plan was making individual ones in time, now that you can allow multiple character sheets to any game.

I've still gotta finish up Cthulhu BRD 7e, then maybe Feng Shui or Seventh Sea if I can get my hands on the char sheet. Of course, I also need to be not sick and get past this depressive cycle too.
