Greetings, Sin-Eaters! Congratulations on your second chance at life! This thread is for creating your Sin-Eater character and his or her geist. Converse with each other, and ask questions if you have any.

The setting for this game will be New Orleans, Louisiana, purportedly the most haunted city in America. The time period will be the present. Recent real world events, including the global pandemic, can be assumed to be happening.

I've provided you with access to the Geist: The Sin-Eaters Second Edition Jumpstart, One Foot in the Grave. The jumpstart covers most of the rules for the game. To make a character though, you still need the Geist Second Edition core book. If access to the core book is an issue for you, then send me a message.

Once characters have been determined, we can start to focus on creating the krewe - a group of Sin-Eaters who choose to band together. Krewe creation is a group activity that will require everyone’s input.

Here is the link for the Geist supplement, Memento Mori.

Would it seem too creepy to build my bound from an actual person I knew who was murdered in New Orleans?

Lol I guess that would be up to you. It doesn’t bother me, though I can’t speak for the other players.

I mean write what you know. As long as its nit going to affect you in a negative way and it's respectful to the person.

My base thoyghts while flicking through a book. An abiding (possibly Kindly instead) who was thrown out by parents for sexuality, and then killed when persuaded to be a witness against a local gang. Working against 'staying in line/accepting your lot in life' and instead being free to be your best self and do the right thing, and in doin so effecting the world, rather than being 'just another victim or gangs'

Geist is likely a personification of the homeless, and/or those to die unnoticed (which I came up with before reading the key of stillness so that's definitely what the geist is getting)

I only have a vague idea at this point, but I am thinking about a guy who worked retail at Marie Laveau's. It was just a paycheck to him. ran a Walking Ghost Tour operation in the French Quarter. He didn't believe in ghosts, though, until after he died. I'll fill in more as I figure out exactly what happened to him.

Edit: I think he was murdered by someone who had taken his tour over and over again because they thought that one of the ghosts he talked about was an ancestor of theirs that needed to be put to rest. They stuck around after the tour one night to try to solicit his help in doing so and overheard him making fun of his customers for believing the load of crap he was feeding them. Something snapped inside them and they killed him. I'm not sure about his Geist, but the guy had made a fortune running these tours and came or was sent back to make amends.

I'm looking over the book now and developing a concept. I should have something more concrete as soon as I re familiarize myself with the game.
New Orleans is a locale tailor made for this kind of game!

@Gnome_Chomskey,

Could you confirm what the Haunts are for The Hungry? Those sections under several of the Burdens have typos. The Listing for Haunts under The Hungry say Marionette, Boneyard, and Curse. But, the text above it says Marionette, Boneyard, and Caul.

There's another mix up for another one where they mix Caul and Curse again.. there's a list in haunts that I think is meant to be correct. (Away from book access right now)

I bought the book yesterday and am looking over it today. Initial ideas were either a security guard or a musician for the Sin-eater and I think I'm going to have to read a bit into what Geists actually are. I had an idea of the the personification of graverobbers and voodoo called Dr. John the Resurrectionist, but I'm not sure if that fits in with how the game views geists.

So as I understand, the Geists while the used to be a single person, do not know who they were anymore, and are more a personfication of some things. Part of getting closer to your geist is helping figure out who the used to be etc. So 'The Resurrectionist' or even 'Baron Samedi' could work, though Dr. John less so. )Those more experienced can correct me of course.

Like mine is likely going to me called something like 'The Sewer Rat' or other derogatory terms for homeless people, if I stick with that concept.

I should add current concept, I'm going all in on The Caul haunt. Character likely social and Mental, and merges with her geist for fights, and hopes the opponents run out of health before she runs out of charges/plasm.

Nice! Thank you for the clarification.

I’ve been checking the Onyx Path forum for official answers but haven’t found any yet. It does look like there was a mix up with affinities for the Bereaved and the Hungry.

Page 73, under Burdens, has a list of the Haunt Affinities. Treat that list as having the correct affinities. So the Hungry should have The Caul instead of The Curse, and the Bereaved should have The Curse instead of The Caul. This fits with the descriptions for each Burden.

To add to what LightOfMidnight correctly said, geists were once normal ghosts. Then they drank from one of the rivers of the Underworld and were transformed into powerful representations of death. Doing so, however, scoured away their human memories and identity. Consequently, most Geist have titles rather than names, such as "The Drowned Bride" or "The Burning Man", etc.

Geists are drawn to make Bargains with those who die in a way that resonates with what they represent. So a Geist that represents death by car accident will typically seek out those who died in a similar manner.

Okay, this may sound like a really silly question, but is there anything I should take or buy to make my Bound capable of resuming her life, as The Hungry are want to do? I mean, her body was partially eaten by alligators. Did she get a new body when making the bargain with the Geist?

I am working with the concept that the Geist approached her in the morgue, after she was found.

As a heads up changing track slightly for the geist (still similar vein) but to 'murders ruled as accidental'. Aka cover ups. May als jump from abiding to vengeful. Not sure on that bit yet.

Thanks for the further illumination. I am looking forward to digging into the text.

I'm leaning towards my Bound being Kindly/Pilgrim. He was a hellion before his death, angry at life and treated his Granddad like crap even though they were the only real family each other had. Post death, he realized how he'd wasted what little time on earth he'd had being angry about things he refused to change and how he wished he'd listened to his Granddad and everything the old man had tried to teach him. Post-Death, he'd be the kind of person his Granddad was in life; be the kind of person his Granddad knew he could be and reclaim the Native knowledge and heritage he'd shunned before his death. Maybe that way he'd get to see his Granddad again and apologize.

My understanding is that, no matter how gruesome the death, the Sin-Eater comes back to life more or less whole. Sin-Eaters are capable of "plasmic healing," which says that they can use plasm to heal from almost anything (with a few exceptions). They can even use plasm to reconstitute severed or destroyed body parts. So I imagine that upon accepting the Bargain, your character is able to rebuild her body to the way it was before the gators got to it.
