I loved Rolemaster back in the day but one combat could take hours to resolve!
I know that was the common experience, but my troupe didn't have the problem. You roll a D100 (open ended), add the mod, subtract the defense, and look up the result on a table. I had the players add their own mod themselves, then I subtracted the defence and looked up the results on a table which I had bookmarked or already had open to the right page at the start of their turn (knowing their attack types). No longer than a D&D combat turn, IMHO.
The game that took a long time was Battletech (mainly because we played it drunk). One battle could be four hours, haha.
