Has anyone tried playing High Adventure Role Playing in a play by post before? I've never even played anything this detailed in terms of the use of tables but something about it I find very appealing.

Thoughts?

I don't even know what that is...

I've never played it (actually just looked it up, looks fairly interesting from what I can see). I've played other fairly detailed games (non-RPGs) in forum like settings and they really only worked well if everyone was very familiar with the rules. I'm not sure that would really matter with an RPG though, unless it's super detailed with combat actions and the like.

I've played Rolemaster tons but never HARP. Speaking of Rolemaster which is known for its charts, I found it really fast IRL, but not sure for PBP. The GM would either have to have the tables available for the players to look up, or resolve every attack in a way that you wouldn't for simpler games.

I loved Rolemaster back in the day but one combat could take hours to resolve!

That was my thought; Rolemaster would be too time consuming but HARP streamlines it quite a bit.

I may run a short game with HARP lite when one of my other games finishes. Check back if you are interested!

I know that was the common experience, but my troupe didn't have the problem. You roll a D100 (open ended), add the mod, subtract the defense, and look up the result on a table. I had the players add their own mod themselves, then I subtracted the defence and looked up the results on a table which I had bookmarked or already had open to the right page at the start of their turn (knowing their attack types). No longer than a D&D combat turn, IMHO.

The game that took a long time was Battletech (mainly because we played it drunk). One battle could be four hours, haha.

Well any game inebriated is going to take just a shade longer!

I have the HARP lite rules and may decide to offer a game. I'm making up some characters myself to get a feel for what the whole process is like.

Stay tuned...

Another interesting thought is using the combat system of HARP or RoleMaster on its own. I have read that this was sort of the purpose of Arms Law when it was first released.

Anyone play around with that approach ever?
